In a night dominated by sports events, ABC’s coverage of game 5 of the Lakers/Celtics NBA Finals, with the Laker’s win to send the series back to Boston, beat following the US Open golf tournament “final” round featuring Tiger Wood’s birdie on the 72nd hole to force an 18 hole playoff today. Kobe Bryant and Paul Pierce put ABC on top for both average viewers (10.8 million) and adults 18-49 (4.3/13) for the night.
The evening’s viewership battle might would have been a lot closer had the golf tournament pushed more into prime-time in most of the country. However, with the 18-49 power of the NBA Finals ABC would likely have won the demo even if Tiger had been playing all night.
CBS went old, very old, for the night with 60 Minutes and the Tony Awards which perhaps few people under 40 watched, although I think after saying that we may hear from every single one of them. Even a repeat night of Fox animation beat CBS handily in the demo for third place.
It’s too bad we don’t get nightly results for cable networks, because my guess is that the CW wouldn’t have been competitive with them for the night either as it struggled and failed to attract even a million average viewers for a Sunday night.
Full details:
We have only half hourly (as opposed to by show) results for ABC, and, as always, live sports results are often revised in the final numbers.

So will the numbers for the NBA finals likely be higher because of the fact that it was live?

Indeed, I was running out the door to the Zoo! It was *freezing* today by the way.
I have done a bit of editing to clarify things.

This over 40 person watched the Tonys and saw your add for the South Pacific CD and purchased it. Would not have done that if I had not seen the Tonys.
