Nielsen Ratings Tuesday June 24: Summer Reality Rules

Posted on 25 June 2008 by Bill Gorman

Scoreboard NBC ABC CBS FOX CW
Total Viewers (million) 10.59 8.17 7.27 5.48 1.44
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 2.8/8 3.1/9 1.4/4 2.4/7 0.6/2

With America’s Got Talent (#1 viewership for the night at 11.51 million) and Celebrity Family Feud, NBC grabbed the viewership win for Tuesday. However, the debuts of ABC’s new reality shows Wipeout (#1 demo adults 18-49 with 3.7 rating / 12 share) and I Survived A Japanese Game Show gave it a strong adults 18-49 demo win. Berman sees the Wipeout viewership growing, but he must be reading tea leaves, because I don’t see any data behind that guess.

Fox’s new episode of Hell’s Kitchen performed well with a demo win at 9pm (3.3/10) in what was a very competitive demo hour. CBS’s rerun line up was absolutely crushed in the demo. I could say CBS has decided to fight their summer demo battles on another night, but except for reruns of their comedies on Monday, they’re getting crushed in the demo every night. And how exactly is the CW going to promote their Fall line up (on which the life of the network may depend) if no one’s watching them during the summer? On Facebook?

  1. kayarn says:

more people watched both wipeout and japanese game show than have ever watched an episode of arrested development, 30 rock or friday night lights.

    thats it, i quit.

    thanks!

Actually Kayarn, I'm pretty sure Arrested Development was on a couple of times after an American Idol results show on Wednesday and got like 11 million viewers. Since it lost probably 15 milion viewers off it's lead in, I do see your point. On a side note, I hate when networks lie about how many people watched their show. At the beginning of America's Got Talent, they said that 24 million people watched last week. Are they saying that the 12 million who watched from 9-10 turned off the show and they got 12 million completely different pepole from 10-11, lol.

  4. Rob D, no. They are saying 24 million discrete individuals watch SOME of the show. The numbers we report are the average viewers across the show's entire duration. Which is a very different number than peak viewing, or total number of people who watched any portion of the show.

  5. Rob D says:

Thanks Robert, they are just trying to mislead the public though. American Idol usually is honest when they tell how many viewers watched. People who don't follow tv ratings will think that AGT is as popular as American Idol.
