Nielsen Ratings Monday, July 14: FOX Wins With Reruns

Posted on 15 July 2008 by Robert Seidman

Total Viewers (million) 6.82 6.74 5.73 3.83 1.15

Reruns of Bones and House spelled victory for FOX winning both most total viewers and the 18-49 demographic. Monday night repeats continue to be CBS’ strong suit in the summer and CBS came in second both overall and in the demo.

There’s not much to say for NBC’s lineup of American Gladiators and Nashville Star other than it performed better than a repeat of The Bachelor: Where Are They Now, a rehash show for The Mole and The Mole’s regular airing on ABC.

The CW was of course, the CW.

Univision averaged more than three times as many viewers as the CW with 3.66 million viewers in primetime. Al Diablo con los Guapos won the 8pm hour in the 18-34 year old demographic with a 2.0/7. It’s nearest competitors among 18-34 year olds were American Gladiators and the Bones rerun which each pulled a 1.5/5 in that age demo.

At 9pm House dominated across the board, including the 18-34 year olds with a 2.0/6. Fuego en la Sangre was second in the 9pm hour among 18-34 year olds with a 1.8/6, comfortably ahead of the combo of repeats of Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory which averaged a 1.5/5 for the hour among 18-34 year olds.

The CSI: Miami rerun dominated the 10pm hour overall and in the 18-49 (2.0/6) and 18-34 (1.5/5). The only good news at all for The Mole is that it came in second among 18-34 year olds at 10pm, narrowly edging out Univision’s Cristina (1.4/4 vs. 1.3/4).

Not to deflect from your original post, but I was hoping to find some news on how both The Closer and Saving Grace did last night on TNT. Got any info?

  2. Bill Gorman says:

The Closer did 7.81 million total viewers, which MediaWeek says is its best premiere ever. Saving Grace did 5.16 million.

“The Closer did 7.81 million total viewers”

Impressive! Cable shows are getting amazing ratings this summer.

  4. It beat everything but the 2.5 Men rerun. that is impressive.

  5. hmm says:

god.. these are all terrible numbers! i mean.. american gladiators at less than 5 million? ouch. and nashville star.. when are people gonna learn idol clones All fail?

I DON´T THINK THE SPANISH-LANGUAGE CHANNELS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS NETWORKS, or including them in the CHARTS. That doesn´t represent what AMERICA is watching. The People who watch those networks aren´t americans. (MOST OF THEM ARE IMMIGRANTS WHO DON`T SPEAK ENGLISH) I THINK THAT ITS ILEGAL TO HAVE “FREE” CHANNELS IN SPANISH. It could be on CABLE, airing more cultural programming, not those ridiculous soap operas.

  7. Sandy says:

And your evidence would be… ?

  8. Holly says:

Hispanics in the country LEGALLY are the fastest growing demographic in the country. While the majority speak English “very well”, it make sense that they would still want to watch TV or read books in their native language (I know I prefer to read in English even though I know other languages).

I really don't see any reason why Spanish-language channels should be banned from being regular broadcast (i.e. “free) networks. Unless I'm mistaken, they are independent businesses who get their financing through investors and ads, not through the government. I am not aware of any laws or regulations that could require that any and all non-english programming should be cable only.

As for the programming, how are these telenovelas really different from the English daytime soaps or primetime soaps like Grey's Anatomy? And if English channels are airing crap like Moment of Truth and 2 1/2 Men, do we really have any basis to complain that the Spanish-language programming isn't more “cultural”?

  9. Daniel C. says:

From Ft. Wayne Journal Gazette (well, it's what I found first):

“More homes were tuned in to Monday night’s Home Run Derby than have ever watched the event. The contest on ESPN was seen by nearly 6.2 million households, breaking the record of more than 5.7 million set in 1999, the network said Tuesday.

The 6.4 rating was up 25 percent from last year’s 5.1. It was the most-viewed non-NFL program on ESPN since the Florida State-Miami football game Sept. 5, 2006.”

The real problem with daily ratings is the networks have become so insignificant that they no longer represent America's viewing habits.
