I haven’t seen the actual show data yet, but there was only one show on NBC during the 8pm-11pm primetime portion of the evening, and that was the Olympic Opening ceremonies. CW also only had one show (Friday Night Smackdown!) and I believe, FOX ran a movie rerun for the two hours, so the only thing we’re probably missing is the the individual show ratings for ABC and CBS. But we can guess Swingtown probably didn’t have a great night, nor whatever was running on ABC.
Update: though averaging viewing for the primetime portion was 35 million, total viewing (caught at least some of the ceremonies) was almost 70 million in the USA.
Update 2: 8/09/08, 18:30 PDT: ABC ran a movie War of the Worlds for the night, so the only thing really missing is the CBS lineup though and the numbers for Swingtown at 10pm were: 3.46 million viewers and a 1.1/3 in the demo.
I wouldn’t have predicted over 30 million viewers for the opening ceremonies, let alone over 35 million for the primetime portion. NBC must be simply ecstatic about these numbers.
I’ll tip the hat to Smackdown! fans though, considering everything its numbers held up pretty well. WWE fans are loyal, and considering Smackdown isn’t a live event, it’s impressive.
More data on last night’s opening ceremonies is here. I’ll try to keep the site updated with any Olympics ratings data available throughout the event.

How outrageous and impossible would it be if a network disrespected its top show? Oh wait, it happened with the CW and Smackdown!
George,
Are you completely nuts??? How has NBC show ANY disrespect?
Now, I do agree that NO network “Deseves” its rating. They need to EARN them, and NBC did more than that with its opening ceremony presentation.

YEAH
I'm a fan of swingtown and boy, if an original episode of *anything* can't beat the [[YAWN]] parade of nations, it really is doomed.
Seriously, CW just threw away their highest rated show. Really stupid mistake. I think SD! is going to MyNetwork TV, if I'm not mistaken. Which means they'll be on the same channel as they were when they were on UPN, so really, what was the whole point of ever switching channels?
