Nielsen Ratings August 20, 2008 – More Olympic Dominance

Posted on 21 August 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard NBC CBS FOX ABC CW
Total Viewers (million) 24.32 5.69 3.87 3.78 .80
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 8.1/23 1.4/4 1.2/3 1.3/4 0.3/1

Did you predict NBC would once again crush the competition? Of course you did. Duh! But although the numbers are sliding a little bit as predicted, NBC still had ten million more viewers than CBS, ABC, Fox and the CW combined.

That’s still a pretty healthy beat down. People love the Olympics more than dogs, at least when it comes to watching them on TV as CBS Greatest American Dog pulled in 5.12 million and a 1.3/4 (rating/share) among 18-49 year olds.

There’s very little else to say about the night, so I’ll spare you the prose. And instead contemplate the end of the TV universe for the Stargate franchise on SciFi.

  1. Outlander says:

I'm going to take your bait, Robert. Why do you think SCIFI cancelled Stargate Atlantis? It earned the same ratings it did last season, and while the press release and commentary talks about “better” ratings for Eureka, that begs the question of what would happen if Atlantis were moved from Friday nights to another night.

Makes me wonder if the recent management turnover at SCIFI isn't going to curtail SCIFI's original programming budget. (Limiting SCIFI to wrestling, “ghost hunters,” Star Trek reruns, and those God-awful Saturday night slasher films.)

I'm amazed to see Terminator eeked out a better audience here than earlier in the week. I think this was the night of the gold medal women's beach volleyball match. I figured all other TV viewing would CEASE while that game was on.
