so it’s safe to assume that cable companies have stolen away all of tivos customers? because like 20% of the country have dvr now.

  3. Muddybulldog says:

While Tivo has a superior product compared to CC DVRs price is the downfall of Tivo. Once upon a time a Tivo S1 was $200 with a $5.95/mo subscription fee. Six years later you’re looking at double that on both the up front cost AND the subscription fees. When the cable company will supply you with a DVR for roughly the same monthly price (sometimes more, sometimes less) as a Tivo there’s little chance to get new customers in the door to see the superior product because of the up front cost.

[...] New TiVo HD XL: Big Drive, Big Price TiVo today announced the availability of its HD XL DVR as the company targets high-end users and people who watch a lot of television. The TiVo HD XL sports a 1 terabyte hard drive capable of recording 150 hours of HD TV and comes with a hefty price tag to match — $599.99. While it’s got impressive specs, this top-shelf play probably won’t bring a full turnabout for TiVo, which is still losing subscribers. [...]
