Uh, I hate GG, with all the over promotion. Glad not that many people watch it, makes me laugh! X)

Kara, the problem is that these numbers ARE good for CW. CW has lowered expectations so far that a show getting over 2.5 mil is a success. I cannot imagine that that is something the suits will put up with for much longer.

Kara, fair point though OTH's numbers last night looked pretty decent compared to last year as well (3.1 million). The same definitely can't be said for Prison Break down 21%, but it's a wacky world we live in where a show with 6.5 million is framed as a failure at the same time a show with 3.5 million is deemed a success!

First off...3.4 million viewers for THE SECOND SEASON ...VS. 3.65 million viewers for the SERIES PREMIER...is PRETTY DAMN GOOD because most of the viewers already know what to expect and most of htem are back! Gossip Girl did NOT dissapoint (can't say the same for OTH and Prison break though!)

this is the problem with comparisons. 3.5 million was last year's FINAL number. Hibberd is reporting the fast national numbers for this year, but what he's using for last year is a mystery. In last year's fast nationals, the premiere had 3.65 million and a 1.7/4 among 18-49 as Bill States. But that 3.65 million was out of a 5.15 million lead-in from ANTM. I'll change the headline...AGAIN. ;-)

3.4 million is less than last years 3.65 million for the overnight fast nationals, but more than I thought the show would do.

An overnight 18-49 rating of 1.7 is what the GG premiere did last year, so no increase there.

I think James might have gotten a bit ahead of himself with the "record numbers" label.

So 3.4 mil is record numbers? I know it's better than it was doing most of last season, but I thought the premiere was around there. Well, still, if 3.4 mil is what CW is going to crow about, I'm guessing the suits are not happy at all.

Not only am I not suprised, I couldn't be more pleased. This show has pimped, propped and promoted TO DEATH. Meanwhile, good, solid shows that are reliable performers for the CW are ignored. Serves them right for narrowing their focus so sharply, and ignoring everything else. When does Ms Ostroff get her pink slip, and whats taken so long?

SG GG, it's a fair question. the numbers I cited (i believe in both cases) were the metered market overnights and not the fast nationals or the final numbers which change a lot. In any case, I got that data via Marc Berman's daily newsletter here.

I agree. Could you please try focusing on shows we will actually watch, like Smallville and Supernatural. Those are your winners because with those ratings it's obvious you're wasting money on GG.

I come in peace.

Gossip Girl's series premiere was a 2.9/5?! Wikipedia says it's 2.4/4 but I believe you guys more.
And come on, 2.5/4 is WAY better than any of the first season's episodes (minus the pilot of course)... not what I'd call a 'disappointment'. And not mentioning how it's about The Hill's numbers last season. What were you guys expecting?
