Ratings Monday, September 8: Terminator: SCC Returns

Posted on 09 September 2008 by Bill Gorman

Scoreboard NBC CBS FOX ABC Uni CW
Total Viewers (million) 7.422 7.134 6.410 5.238 4.406 3.202
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 2.0/5 2.2/6 2.5/6 1.5/4 1.8/5 1.6/4
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 1.3/4 1.5/4 2.3/7 1.1/3 2.1/6 2.2/6

NBC’s Deal or No Deal was the most watched show of the night with 9.611 million viewers and helped NBC win the night with an average of 7.422 million viewers.

The return of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles on Monday drew 6.343 million viewers, an adults 18-49 rating of 2.4 and an adults 18-34 rating of 2.1. That won the adults 18-49 demo and was third in the adults 18-34 demo for the hour. Those numbers, however, were well down from both the overnights for last season’s first or second episodes and the finale. Here are the final numbers for all the first season’s Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles episodes. Note, comparing final numbers and overnight fast affiliate ratings can be a bit apples and oranges, but should give you some perspective.

Prison Break’s second outing results were nearly identical to its premiere last Monday with 6.478 million viewers and demo ratings of 2.6 for both adults 18-49 and 18-34. That won the 18-34 demo for the hour and was second in the 18-49 demo.

Those two shows helped Fox win both the nightly adults 18-49 demo with an average 2.5 rating and the adults 18-34 demo with an average of 2.3.

Gossip Girl’s second outing against more competition was down 7% in viewers from its premiere last Monday, with 3.158 million viewers, an 18-49 rating of 2.2 1.6 and an 18-34 rating of 2.2 were down 0.1 rating points for each demo. That was enough to finish second in the adults 18-34 demo [behind Al Diablo con los Guapos] for the hour. We don’t get gender demo information, but will likely see it later in a CW press release.

One Tree Hill, the less PR lavished CW offering for Monday, outdid Gossip Girl across the board with 3.246 million viewers an 18-49 rating of 1.7 and an 18-34 rating of 2.3 [which tied for second for the hour].

The season finale  of ABC’s High School Musical drew 4.134 million viewers and was last among the six networks in the demos for the hour. I wouldn’t look for it to be back on ABC, but perhaps it may appear on one of the Mouse’s associated cable networks. The CMA Music Festival finished an uncompetitive 4th and 3rd for viewers in its two hours with 6.379 and 5.202 million viewers. I’m not sure ABC was expecting much more.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Overnight Ratings: Local metered-market ratings service of Nielsen Station Index (NSI) in which household ratings and shares are provided to clients the morning following the day or evening of telecast. While routinely used for “next day” immediate analysis, these fast affiliate ratings are by process inaccurate for programs that air live across a network since they represent affiliate time period performance. For example, last night’s 10-11pm affiliate #’s would reflect 10pm on the East Coast but also 10pm on the West Coast which for a live event would not represent the same broadcast or portion of the broadcast.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

LIVE+SD: The number that watched a program either while it was broadcast OR watched via DVR on the same day [through 3AM the next day] the program was broadcast.

  1. Bob says:

Ouch for FOX, geat for OTH, i mean beating GG is just a huge success

  2. Nick says:

    wow tscc wont last

  3. Taps says:

Prison Break is horrible I hope it gets canned soon.

  4. Troy says:

Last week Gossip Girl had a 1.7 with adults 18-49. Is your 2.2 a typo?

  5. The CW will claim (and fairly so) that it won the 18-34 demo outright which will because it does not compete for the same advertising dollars as Univision. I think that’s fair and true, although I do believe Univision’s strength in the youth demos deserves more attention by the national English speaking media.

Since the CW (or ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox) do not compare numbers to Univision, CW will almost certainly have claims to victory among women 18-34 as well.

  6. Jack says:

Taps, indeed. How much longer can Prison Break even last? It’s completely lost touch with anything resembling a TV show. Cancel that crap already.

I say once again, not good news for the tvbythenumbers.com favorite little show, The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Damn, damn! :-(

  7. Ben says:

I can’t believe OTH did better than Gossip Girl!

  8. Troy, you are correct.

  9. Bill Gorman says:

Troy, thanks, 1.6 was the correct number, the copy has been fixed.

  10. Bob says:

I can Ben given the quality of those two shows, OTH is far superior

  11. Bill Gorman says:

Jack, we prefer to think of it as our favorite BIG show, but damn indeed. ;)

  12. Ben says:

I dont follow OTH, but my impression (from Spain) is that GG has more promotion than OTH (tv ads, magazines, hottest cast..) and that should give GG better ratings than OTH.
Anyway, i believe that OTH wouldnt have such ratings without the strengh of GG.

  13. Bob says:

No matter how hard it’s cricized i still like PB, my only hope is that the story will be wrapped up. I can expect anyting from FOX

  14. I think the benchmark for Fringe now must be 12.7 million (~2x TSCC). I won’t be surprised if it happens as Fox *seemingly* (emphasis on seemingly) promoted Fringe four times as much as TSCC.

  15. Bob says:

Ben OTH has had those kind of numbers on its own last season. And yes OTH has about a tenth of GG’s promotion

  16. Outlander says:

This is very bad for Terminator. We’ll need to see what ratings Fringe pulls down. I mean, TSCC won the demo and came in a close second in the overalls, but did so against some goofy ABC program and a repeat on CBS. Overall, it looks like taps for Terminator, which makes me very sad.

  17. Jack says:

Bill, yeah, my mistake, favorite BIG show. I still remember the season 1 Summer-Glau-TSCC-loving Monday night ratings threads. Those were awesome. :-)

  18. Ben says:

Yeah, Bob… I think GG deserves 4 millions minimum, for my point of view the audience it has is ridiculous!
90210 tonight… i think it will get 4.2m. no more.

  19. FrankJ says:

Dang that is not good for Terminator. It was a pretty good episode too. I had expected closer to 9 million since it was the season premiere and hopefully the show had picked up some interest with the DVD.

Still it looks like they won the hour for the 18-49yr demo at least. Anybody know when we can expect the time-shifted numbers? Hoping for some kind of good news there.

  20. 1982 says:

Sorry to see the numbers are lower than usual for TSCC and PB. Seems to be a trend for tv now, low viewers. I totally enjoy both shows though, you just got to go with it and try not to analyse too much. Of course both are 100% out to lunch on reality but they make for good entertainment if you like car chases and seeing stuff get blown up.

I have a nasty feeling that Fringe is going to do big numbers tonight but will drift off fast in the next month but will still manage a cult following like both the above named shows. That’s ok I guess. I’ll probably be one of them.

Gossip Girl did good I guess, not far off what it did last week and the CW was pretty happy with that. It kinda confuses me though. The CW is a network just like ABC & Fox, right? It’s not a cable channel like FX or USA anyway, so why is it that 3 million is good for them, but 6 or 7 million isn’t enough on other networks? Is CW not transmitted into as many homes as the others?

  21. chris says:

Wow, I think we are preparing the funural for TSCC a little too early. Let’s give it some time and hope people! Sure they were down from last year but things could rebound. For all we know FOX is okay with these numbers becasue the season is not in full swing yet. I tend to hope that as long as TSCC can pull in close numbers to Prison Break which is a show FOX loves, they have a chance of staying around. It will be more telling once all networks are doing new episodes too. Also, isnt the 8 oclock hour the least watched anyway? I’m just saying don’t call the show dead after its premier we still have 12 episodes left to enjoy.

  22. Gusar says:

Another “damn” for the TSCC low ratings. Such a great episode too.

And I don’t know why, but OTH beating GG makes me laugh. Hard. Makes digesting the TSCC ratings a bit easier.

  23. 1982: it’s not about the 3 million viewers really. It’s about the healthy premiums advertisers are willing to pay for young women. I’m actually trying to find out a good ballpark of what that premium is. Anecdotally based on other data a couple of million 12-34 year olds pays MUCH more than 6 million 50 year olds, but exactly (or even a ballpark figure) how much is something I’m trying to find out.

  24. Bill Gorman says:

1982, CW’s a broadcast network too. The PR folks there play the hand they’re dealt. If their results are X, their job is to make X sound like the greatest thing in the world.

chris, Indeed, I wouldn’t make any conclusions re: the future of TSCC from a single night. There will be our Renew or Cancel index to do that once the new season begins in late September!

  25. 1982 says:

Thanks, Robert & Bill. This ratings stuff and just what is good and bad is hard to sort out.

  26. 1982, thanks. I’m pretty sure both the networks and Nielsen wouldn’t have it any other way! But we try to simplify it where we can.

  27. GRD says:

“The CW will claim (and fairly so) that it won the 18-34 demo outright which will because it does not compete for the same advertising dollars as Univision.”

Um . . . sorry, but that makes no sense at all. Everything’s already split into teeny tiny little demographics by age and gender — now we’re supposed to split them even further by which advertising dollars they’re competing for??

They can claim they won all they want to, but it doesn’t sound fair to me.

  28. Taps says:

Jack completely agree with you I gave that show PB a second chance last night but I am not watching that anymore. The show feel so dated and done with it’s bad and so boring and dull no matter how much running, screaming and the horrid over acting it just doesn’t work anymore.I am just waiting for NBC,CBS and ABC to air their new shows mostly funny ones already in two weeks.

  29. Outlander says:

The producers of Prison Break joked about how many sharks the show was intentionally jumping. It was offensive. The implication was almost “we’re just screwing around airing new episodes of garbage because Fox is dumb enough to pay us.”

I just hope Terminator meets or exceeds Fox’s expectations. Since I don’t know what those are, I’m panicking about the ratings, as is everyone else I think.

  30. FrankJ says:

Prison Break doesn’t have to worry about ratings it seems. It’s produced by FOX, and they purchased the entire season of episodes. AND they’re talking spin-off, which just blows my mind.

Terminator, on the other hand, has two issues: it’s not a FOX production, so FOX has to pay Warner Brothers to air the episodes, and Terminator has a huge percentage of non-live viewers (hopefully still true this season). The amazing thing is Terminator is consistently putting out quality stuff, it’s tough to find a negative review of the show anywhere.

I’m going to place my bet now that people just didn’t know the show was starting last night. I am talking to more people today, nobody watched, nobody knew it started.

Also, something else, my DVR, even without me telling it, was ready to record Sarah Connor last night because I have it set to record first run episodes for that series. I’m hoping that a lot of DVR viewers do the same. That way people may be watching the show later in the week after missing it last night.

  31. SG GG fan says:

Two things for those who are thrilled about OTH’s 0.09 million/ 0.1 rating triumph over GG:

    1. HUT no.’s are higher at 9pm, so by saying that OTH beat GG due to a mere 0.09 million viewers and 0.1 rating increase is a “huge success” is exaggerating. There’s something wrong with OTH if it doesn’t do better than GG. Besides, both got 3.1/9 for their core women 18-34.

    2. OTH is an established show. It doesn’t need the amount of promotion GG gets because getting new viewers to tune it at a show’s sixth (and rumored last) season would be difficult, and not to mention, pointless.

  32. Julia says:

SG GG, while your first point is definitely true for all other networks, it’s well established that on CW 8pm gets higher ratings than 9pm.

  33. BeerVendor says:

Monday Night Football is probably the culprit for the low ratings. It wasn’t a simple Monday Night Football night, but it was the season opener… so that’s a huge deal. And it was also packaged as a double header. People love that.

I expect better numbers from TSCC and the likes next week. Good thing is that even with poor ratings, TSCC did well againt the competition. So that’s something to look forward to.

Also, TSCC has been huge in the DVR department and online viewing… hopefully FOX looks at that as a positive.

  34. and there were *two* Monday night games, one at 7pm ET and one at 10pm ET, so it ate into parts of primetime on Both costs.

  35. Jacob says:

Okay, I’ll admit that I enjoy watching Gossip Girl, sure, the quality of the plotlines aren’t that good, but it’s watchable. What I don’t get is the hype, sure the CW wants people from the women 18-34 demo watching, but still Gossip Girl is in its 2nd season and still gets beaten by One Tree Hill which is in its 6th!

So WOW, Gossip Girl got almost 3.4 million viewers for its season premiere episode and 3.2 for its 2nd, and it outpreformed One Tree Hill in its season premiere, big deal…

So, let us compare the two CW dramas:
    1. Gossip Girl has far more promotion than One Tree Hill, still gets outpreformed most of the time.
    2. When One Tree Hill was in its 2nd season it averaged 4.3 million viewers and had a season high of 5.4 million, that’s numbers Gossip Girl wont even get near this season.
    3. Okay, maybe its not fair comparing the shows like that, since One Tree Hill wasn’t on CW back then, plus it had Gilmore Girls as lead-in, so lets compare how they did on Wednesdays at 9. In the 06-07 season, One Tree Hills fourth, it had Top Model as lead-in. One Tree Hill averaged 2.9 million viewers and had a season high at 4.2 million.
In the 07-08 season Gossip Girl had that very same spot and averaged 2.35 million viewers and had a season high at 3.65 million.

So lets face it Gossip Girls numbers are not, nor will they ever be, comparable to One Tree Hills. And the quality of the One Tree Hill plotlines continues to be far better than Gossip Girls every week!

  36. Susan says:

Bad for T:SCC. Low demo, less than stellar total viewers. These numbers are actually worse than New Amsterdam, which got canned. I don’t think this show will last much longer.

  37. Susan, it still outperformed New Amsterdam in the 18-49 demo. Just a random sampling but on Monday April 14, New Amsterdam had a 2.1 demo rating in the overnights at 9pm (though it did have more than 6.3 million viewers). But TSCC was down in the demo almost 23% vs. the combined two hour finale on 3/3 when it did a 3.1 rating among 18-49 year olds in the overnights. So it’s bad, but not *(yet) worse than New Amsterdam!

  38. Rick says:

Oh man – those aren’t good for Sarah and friends – I still think they need to move it to sundays at 9 eastern – or switch with Prison Break…oh well…i liked the surprise Terminator at the end – but 6+ million is still a ways from 9+ million from the so called Season 1 ( 9 weeks is a season?)…I hope they don’t have an open-ended/never finish ending at the end of this run…and for the record Fox should call this season 1.5 – 9 weeks to me doesn’t count as a season.

  39. Mike G. says:

Sheesh, I almost get the impression that a bunch of people want to see TSCC get canned. It’s the first week folks with the show in a new time slot. Give it some time. I’m not sure how many NBC viewers who tuned in for DOND are going to return for Chuck when it starts, so the viewers may pick up. Plus, it will not always be up against multiple football games. Given the fact that Fox renewed TSCC in the first place, I sort of doubt that they are going to can it without first completing the episodes that have been filmed.

  40. FrankJ says:

Robert, when do the time-shifted numbers start to appear? Any chance Terminator will see a bump larger than the 1.8 million viewers it used to get last season? And, will that help?

  41. Frank, we won’t see those numbers until Monday, September 29. Nielsen is reportedly working on decreasing the lag times with DVR data…

  42. dave says:

I don’t know who gets the lions share of DVD revenue. (the studio or the network) but it seems to me that TSCC would be strong there, as well as online, and DVR. But even with all that I don’t think a 2.4 is good enough to earn it a 3rd season. Sad.

  43. Mandi says:

I’m glad PB is atleast holding on to it’s viewership. That’s something. And it won it’s hour so I wish people weren’t so hard on it. Personally, I like the show, so I hope it keeps it’s ratings steady and builds later on. SCC could have done better, and I surprised it didn’t– but like I said, I didn’t know it was back on. Hopefully, the reviews for the premiere episode will remind people it’s started up again.

  44. Rich says:

I dont understand the PB bashing. It won in the 18-34 demo and was a close second in the 18-49 demo. For a show which has reportedly jump the shark, I think those ratings are good. Every Tuesday I pray for bigger numbers, but that isnt the case, nevertheless it was Fox’s top scripted drama last night.

First and for most, Im a fan of TSCC, but FOX need to keep a close eye on it. In my opinion, last nights episode was an anticlimax. Given last season’s cliff-hangar ending and a quality first season, I was expecting more from the second season premiere. It felt more like a filler episode, with the entire Cameron wanting to terminate John to protecting him. All we did was just go around in circles. If it was for the final scene, the episode would have been a complete disaster in my opinion. Those numbers arent that impressive and to lose out to PB is not good news.

  45. FrankJ says:

Thanks, Robert. It’s a long way off, but hopefully the DVR numbers will be a bit of a boost.

  46. FrankJ says:

By the way, Robert, curious if you’d seen this? You mentioned the football game. That seems to be the growing online consensus.

    http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117991939.html?categoryId=14&cs=1#

“On Monday of the current week, Fox’s “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” opened with nothing-special numbers in its new timeslot (2.4/7 in 18-49, 6.33m), though it was the top broadcast program in demos. “Prison Break” followed (2.6/6, 6.36m) with numbers similar to its week-earlier season preem.

“Sarah Connor” could have been impacted by the early-starting season preem of “Monday Night Football” on ESPN (5.1/15, 12.50m for Green Bay-Minnesota), which began at 7:05 p.m. ET instead of the usual 8:40.”

  47. Frank, we’ll see in a week. I think it’s fair to think it has SOME impact. Although there was nothing special about the first week of MNF kicking off at 7pm, it is 1.5 hours earlier than it comes on regularly. Fox certainly knew about that and could have pushed the premiere back one week…

  48. ryan says:

is the young female audience or the male worth more?

  49. Joecanada83 says:

Don’t forget about the Canadians you guys. I’ve been reading all of you’re posts and it seems that only the Americans viewers saw the premiere of TSCC. Our TSCC premiere doesn’t start until Saturday 13, 9pm on SPACE (Channel 50) with a Merathon that stars at 12pm. Just maybe the viewers of Canada who are big fans (me being one of them) of the show as well will have higher ratings…

I for one would like to see an episode were Cameron and John play a good game of chess. Man vs Machine.

  50. JoeCanada, we don’t see any Canadian ratings and I don’t think we should factor it into the US numbers when it comes to forecasting the fate of shows.

I like the idea of the chess match scene…

  51. SG GG Fan says:

    Julia & Jacob,

    - HUT refers to the number of Households Using/watching Television at a particular point of time. Hence, the number is the same for ALL networks and it is a known fact that more people watch TV at 9pm than 8pm

    - I’ve said this many times but I’m going to say it again: OTH is an established show. It does not need the amount of promotion GG gets. But promotion or no promotion, OTH is SUPPOSED to do better than GG, not because it’s a better show in any way but because: (i) it’s more established, (ii) it has a history of higher ratings, (iii) it’s at 9pm.
I don’t see why you should be bashing GG. If I were an OTH fan, I’d be contented but not conceited that OTH managed to pull off just a bit more numbers than GG, because if the opposite were to happen OTH would be in trouble.

    - Besides, OTH had the privilege of being on The WB. It could rely on the audience it built with The WB while GG had to find its own audience.

Oh, and OTH has better quality plotlines? Yeah right.
