ABC Family’s Secret Life Smacksdown CW and 90210

Posted on 10 September 2008 by Robert Seidman

The mid-season finale of ABC Family’s The Secret Life of an American Teenager beat CW’s 90210 resoundingly from a numbers perspective and by double and triple digit percentages among the key women 18-34 years old, women 12-34 years old and all people aged 12-34 demographics. Secret Life pulled in 4.5 million viewers vs. 90210’s 3.2 million, beat 90210 by a couple hundred thousand among women 18-34 and doubled 90210 among 12-34 year old females (2.4 million to 1.2 million).

More interesting to me perhaps is that while CW claimed victory among 18-34 women and 12-34 year old women, that was only versus its broadcast network competition. I find it at least a little bit intriguing that in these “key” demographics, a cable net outperformed every show aired by ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and the CW.

Here’s the full press release from ABC Family, there’s a fair bit of smacktalk and plenty of jabs at the CW — even Gossip Girl (gasp). I’m leaving all the gloating sub-headlines in, mostly for their entertainment value, but there’s a fair bit of data in them and after you scroll past them.

  1. Bill Gorman says:

    Let the PR Smackdown continue!

  2. Gusar says:

    Bwahahahahahahahahaha!!

    Umm, yeah.

    Bwahahahahahahahahaha!!

Ok, sorry, I just had to get this off my chest. There’s no way CW can spin this. Absolutely no frickin’ way. Oh yeah, the can blame the Nielsens.

(and every GG fan is going to curse me into hell for this post. oh well.)

  3. GRD says:

    What Gusar said. :-)

  4. Alyssa says:

Honestly, who here has seen an episode of this show? I can hardly remember the title. I thought it was “The Secret Life of Pregnant Teens.”

Not that I’ve watched 90210 either. But, I know of it.

  5. GRD says:

I’ve seen it. And anyway, name recognition doesn’t seem to be accomplishing a heck of a lot. They don’t count people who’ve heard of shows, they count people who watch them.

  6. Bill Gorman says:

Gusar, et. al., the CW will simply ignore it. They don’t compare their results to cable networks or to non-English networks. Nor do they program Sundays. Or Saturdays. Or 10-11pm weekdays.

At some point, if they narrow their focus enough, they’ll be programming exclusively for the CW PR staff in their private screening room from 12-1 on Mondays. :)

  7. KK says:

Geez, a show as watchable as “gossip girl” is getting whipped by some wimpy old-school teen drama, all i know is I’ll take GG (or 90210) anyday

  8. Alyssa says:

    GRD -

Rude, much? And name recognition is a sign of popularity, no? If hardly anyone recognizes it, then how is it so popular was my honest question. I am in that all important 18-34 demo and this is not a show that my female peers follow or are heavily influenced by.

  9. GRD says:

Bill, you mean they aren’t already? :-)

Alyssa — I didn’t mean to be rude at all. I’m very sorry if I came across that way. I wasn’t saying anything against you. I was trying to make a point about “buzz” vs. ratings, which is a subject that’s been talked about a lot lately: A lot of shows attract a lot of attention but not ratings, and in the end, it’s usually the ratings that count.

But I apologize if I said it in an offensive way. Again, that wasn’t my intention.

  10. Bob says:

I’ve watched and it’ss quite bad vut even so it is still better than GG and OTH

  11. Alyssa says:

I’m sorry, GRD. I completely mistook the tone of your post! And of course you make valid points.

However, I still don’t see the impact that this Secret Life show makes on the entertainment industury regardless of trumping the CW in ratings.

  12. GRD says:

That’s a good question. I think the full impact of it has yet to be seen. These things can take a while to play out. But it may be that as the industry considers these ratings, we’ll begin to see fewer shows about spoiled rich kids played by adults, and more shows about normal, more relatable kids with everyday struggles who are actually played by kids, or at least younger adults. (There’s a mix of teens and young adults on “Secret Life,” I believe.)

That’s not to say “Secret Life” isn’t flawed. It is. The dialogue is downright terrible sometimes, and that’s annoying because it honestly wouldn’t take that much to fix it. But it still has something that draws people, and I think the industry will be working to try to figure out what that something is, and replicate it. Hopefully with people who are better at writing dialogue.
