Will ‘Swingtown’ Be CBS’ ‘30 Rock’?

Posted on 10 September 2008 by Robert Seidman

For a show hardly anyone seems to watch there are a bunch of fans of the CBS show Swingtown online who hope Swingtown isn’t cancelled. There’s the requisite sites and message boards to save the show though I haven’t yet seen whether Swingtown fans plan to send condoms to CBS instead of the peanuts its Jericho brethren sent.

There still has been no formal word and it’s very possible that CBS would say nothing even if it did cancel it. But is there a chance it would be saved? On the Nielsen ratings numbers alone the chances of that are so close to zero that they might as well be zero. The numbers are so bad, especially after being shipped off to the ghetto that is summer Friday nights that they are not even worth detailing here. But sometimes there are other factors besides the numbers and perhaps this is one of those times.

For one, CBS is apparently very enamored with the show’s producer/creator Mike Kelley and CBS Paramount signed him to a seven figure two year deal. BiCoastal, co-produced with Sean Hayes is already slated for the CBS owned Showtime. The show focuses on the challenges of a man trying to balance a normal family life in LA while falling in love with a man in New York.

Kelley’s path to riches apparently involved producing a lot of beer commercials, but he has written for One Tree Hill and The O.C. as well as NBC’s Providence. He also worked on Jericho which means it’s possible for CBS to love the man without loving the show, but the buzz seems to be that execs at CBS really like Swingtown and are disappointed with the numbers.

After inking the two year deal, Kelley said that Swingtown was his priority and that he thinks there is a home for the show and hopes it is on CBS. While normally I’d look at its numbers and say, “Uh…no,” I’m not convinced CBS wouldn’t give it another shot next summer or mid-season merely because it makes the execs at CBS feel good.

NBC’s 30 Rock doesn’t pull great numbers although it does OK in terms of percent of viewers who are in the 18-49 demographic and reportedly does well among high income viewers as well. But the insiders at NBC, including NBC chief Jeff Zucker *love* that 30 Rock is an insidery show that pokes fun at the network. Without that love, I doubt 30 Rock would still be on the air (I enjoy 30 Rock very much, by the way).

CBS may have similar feelings towards Swingtown. If Les Moonves likes it, that may be all that’s necessary. After all, he paid Katie Couric a bunch of money and just this week said he’s very happy with how things are going and is very patient even though the CBS Evening News could be re-titled the CBS Evening Lose, because it’s always in last place. There are external factors at play that could save the show despite the poor showing in the Nielsen ratings.

We’ll see.

  1. Julia says:

The thing is, CBS and NBC are very different networks. While CBS isn’t at its untouchable #1 spot (in viewers if not demos) it was at for a long time, I don’t think it’s yet at the point where they are willing to accept such low ratings, no matter how much love they have for the show. NBC has said straight out that they aren’t really concerned with ratings too much right now, and are thinking more about the quality of their programming. They may just be saying that to save face, but 30 Rock does get enough recognition that it could be worth it just for that. I’m not sure whether Swingtown has that same potential (I’m not sure it doesn’t, either, I haven’t watched it at all or read any reviews of it), or if CBS is even looking for that.

  2. Did NBC really say it was focusing on QUALITY and not ratings? I did see where one of its execs said it was focusing on margins and not ratings, even though there’s more than a little correlation between margins and ratings at some point. Still I would agree CBS and NBC are very different, as Bill always says, NBC is a beggar and not a chooser and CBS can definitely afford to be more choosy. But if they let the Katie Couric experiment go on this long, anything is possible. It’s obvious that they really like Kelley and weren’t deterred by Swingtown’s low ratings when it came to signing him. But for sure, that’s all very speculative.

  3. Julia says:

I do recall a mention of quality, though I can’t find the article. I did look around a bit and found articles quoting Ben Silverman as saying he was in this business out of love and such and these are programs he’s waited his whole life to air, so I could be confusing it with that.

  4. dearme says:

NBC kept 30 ROCK (I enjoy 30 Rock very much, by the way) because they thought it was the next The Office, office pulled the same numbers in it’s 1st season and now it’s a whole different story.

  5. Eliserin says:

This has been my point of view all along. It’s great that the CBS execs like Swingtown and I think that helps it’s chances of having a season 2. And I also believe that there’s many more fans than the “numbers” are indicating. I don’t watch a lot of tv but Swingtown is a show I’d rather not do without – I’m hooked.

  6. xerxes says:

Just want to say I appreciate the ‘other external factors at play’ comment in the article, because that’s all that’s seemed to have been happening to ‘Swingtown’ since it started airing. Honestly, the drama of getting ‘Swingtown’ to air on a weekly basis has almost been worthy of a script in and of itself, and all parties such as the network execs, fans, advertisers, haters, Moonlight fans, etc., have been playing leading roles. I just wish CBS would renew it for another 13 episode run, as a mid-season replacement or summer show next year, so that we as fans can get back to talking about the show instead of the drama behind the show. CBS has a battle on its hands, no doubt, particularly with advertisers and its own affiliates. I feel CBS really would like to see Swingtown continue and are pushing that point right now with advertisers in particular who have been throwing their muscle around a bit too much lately in an attempt to influence programming, IMHO. What would be SO SWEET is if CBS stuck Procter and Gamble, Norelco, and Ace Hardware with a 10 percent premium on all their advertising for the coming year as a nice ‘thank you’ for pulling their ads from ‘Swingtown’. Kind of a nice, ‘thanks for nothing.”

  7. Julia says:

Xerxes, more likely CBS will be giving them free space as make goods for not providing them with the content/audience they were hoping for.

  8. Swingtown is a great show and all of us fans are working hard to keep it on the air come see what we are doing @ the Save Swingtown website: http://saveswingtown.web.officelive.com

  9. xerxes says:

As a fan, it’s not my job to do the homework of the execs or the ad agencies. If they had done proper due diligence, they would have set realistic expectations based upon the feedback they received. If they didn’t do that, then what the heck are they being paid to do? In terms of the ‘content’, I have no idea what you are talking about or what your expectation was “full frontal nudity on network TV?, or one long orgy of swingers after another?” I thought the content was not just fine or adequate. I thought it was exceptional and long overdue.

  10. Holly says:

    xerxes,

I know you’re a fan of Swingtown, but it would be beyond stupid for CBS to try to screw over the advertisers. Don’t forget, it’s the advertisers, not the viewers, that finance the networks. They aren’t going to piss them off for not wanting to advertise during ONE of their shows.

  11. Julia says:

That wasn’t meant to be an insult to Swingtown. I don’t know the reasons the advertisers pulled out, but whether it was content or audience numbers, this is CBS not living up to its promises. Why would anything I said be taken as me telling you that you need to do research for the network and/or advertisers? I’m just correcting your assumption on how the industry works. When advertisers are not happy, they get freebies, not higher prices.

  12. Kenneth says:

I just don’t see CBS laying out the money for an hour long drama with a big, expensive cast and high production costs for another low-rated summer run. They were hoping for a hit they could bring back for 13-16 episodes in January or a full season next year. I think if CBS axes The Mentalist, Eleventh Hour, or The Ex List soon in the season, there’s a chance for January. Otherwise, we’ll have to wait for Fall 2009 or the show will need a new home (I vote for new home on cable, where they won’t have to dance around the adult themes).

  13. Brianna says:

Swingtown is a great show that attracted a small audience due to the fact that only the first show was advertised and it was on during the summer. People spend a lot of time outdoors during the summer, take vacations, etc. I do believe that Swingtown had higher ratings than Big Brother, and BB was on 3 nights per week.

There are plenty of advertisers that should be approached to replace the ones who are caving to the religious factions. If religions all got their way, we’d all be under the control of scientologists or members of the Westboro Baptist Church! That isn’t my life and I resent the fact that the networks and advertisers listen to that cultural choice at all.

Advertisements for wine, hotels, airlines, cars, etc. would be quite appropriate for the fanbase watching Swingtown. Swingtown actually had viewers WATCHING television for a change. In other words, without Swingtown, I wouldn’t see their advertisements anyway. I’m bored with the reality shows and crime/legal dramas that have plagued our televisions for over a decade.

Swingtown was a completely new concept that gave viewers a glimpse into the past and piqued their curiousity about a lifestyle most are unfamiliar with. It opened the door to the taboo and offered an escape from the senseless murder and political corruption that exists in most shows.

CBS and their advertisers would be foolish to pass up the opportunities that this show offered.

  14. xerxes says:

Holly, surely you don’t believe I was serious! Allow me two fantasies — one that somehow CBS sticks it to all the advertisers that backed out of Swingtown, and two, that some day I get one dance with Molly Parker on a disco dance floor to “Get Down Tonight” by KC and the Sunshine Band.
Kenneth, that’s my internal best-case-scenario as well. Personally, I’d be totally satisfied as a fan if it gets a legitimate shot as a mid-season replacement and democracy ruled. As far as its shot at success so far, especially as a summer show moved to Friday night, it smells an awful lot like hanging chads in Florida.
Julia, then what a stupid concept the industry operates under. “Hey, you did something to make us look foolish. Here’s something for free as a thank you.” Maybe I should pee on a Corvette and get a free car!

  15. Dave says:

I love Swingtown! Started a blog for the renewal chase!

Take part in the a poll to get your opinion where Swingtown should end up!

  16. Jessilynn says:

Swingtown is truly a wonderful, quality show. I’ve been doing everything within my power to spread the word and see this show continue. It’s the ONLY show to ever come on network television that has provoked such a strong response from me.

  17. AylaRose says:

NO way is “Swingtown” better than “Moonlight.” “Moonlight was a hudred times better than this drivil and a lot more sexy a cast that you can’t imagine. Alex and Jason and Sophia were brilliant as Mick and Josef and Beth. Every guy on the show was sexy as hell even Logan is a teddy bear. Sophia and Shaynnon are very beautiful ladies whom even the girls want to look up too. I dare you to check out “Moonlight” and not think so too. The subject matter of “Swingtown” would be better suited for CBS’s sister station Showtime than any of the broadcast networks.

    AylaRose

  18. Brianna says:

I watched one episode of Moonlight and it didn’t hold my interest at all. Blech!

Swingtown had me hooked before the first episode finished! I am not easy to please, and this show grabbed my attention on a variety of levels! There was humor, wit, historical data, sexiness, and controversial topics.

I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT AND WANT TO WATCH MORE!!!!!

  19. Susan says:

This isn’t about Moonlight, Ayla. This post is about Swingtown, which, btw, had nothing to do with Moonlight’s demise (Moonlight’s questionable quality had more to do with that).
Swingtown was a delight to watch this summer, and I hope CBS’ execs will give this show another season. So well written and acted, and of course stands out in the sea of tv procedurals and other whodunits.

  20. Tracy says:

You’re surprised that “Swingtown” has fans? What is it? Only Nielsen members are allowed to have a say in what WE watch? Who are Nielsen families? Why don’t we ever see anybody on any message board proclaiming they are one of them? Are they in witness protection? Do they even care what is on TV? If it’s about sponsors, shouldn’t they gauge who is actually buying their products and have surveys on that instead? I know I don’t watch TV for ads. The only thing I enjoy seeing advertised are food related commercials (Olive Garden, TGI Fridays, Red Lobster), who cares about batteries, coats, cars, and dishwashing soap? I buy products I am satisfied with and if they suck then no amount of ads are going to make me want that item again. If sponsors are all about selling their products, shouldn’t they be without bias? I won’t go to a store or buy something that can be influenced by the religious reich or their cult-like zealots telling all of American what they should and should not support? When did America turn into 1942 Hitler led Germany? I don’t think God would support those type.

What gives with the “Moonlight” fans? No. “Swingtown” has had NOTHING to do with “Moonlight.” The only similarity is that they were shows picked up by CBS that were out of their wheelhouse/wheelchair. Maybe those fans should complain about The Ex List when that airs. Friday at 9PM. Does that sound familiar? Who knows? Maybe Nina Tassler truly does like “Swingtown.” Maybe if she were married to a crew member of it, it might have a better chance of survival and we wouldn’t have to talk about this. How many people really think “Big Brother” would be running this long and now for three days a week if CBS CEO Les Moonves wife Julie Chen were not the host of the show?

How could CBS think that “Swingtown” had a true fighting chance with the way they promoted the show as they didn’t know what to do with it in the first place. CBS never knows how to promote anything. Hardly anybody from any show on CBS is seen on a late night show. ABC, NBC, and cable stations do it. Not CBS. They had to have figured it would be a tough sell being stuck with a line-up of all crime shows. That’s all people are used to. That’s all CBS viewers are used to. They keep catering to an older demographic each and every time. Then they turn around and say, “Where are the younger people?” They had them and chose to ignore fans of programs unlike their usual crime and blood shows. All of the other networks have different types of shows. I remember a loooooong time ago when CBS used to be diversified. Now? No.

I truly hope “Swingtown” makes it to Showtime instead. Then CBS can keep their upcoming line up for next Summer. “I Know My Cat’s A Star,” “Mall Cops,” and “CSI: Boise,” “CSI: Newark,” and “CSI: Kalamazoo.”

  21. Em says:

The truth is CBS doesn’t do drama well. Realty shows maybe, Procedurals sure…drama not so much. It doesn’t matter whether its Jericho, Moonlight or Swingtown once its on CBS it’s an issue of additional seasons. Maybe the audience just doesn’t watch for dramas on this network so the numbers don’t work? I don’t know. For all the fans of each of these shows your arguements all sound exactly the same. If you took out the show name your comments are identical. I find this interesting and telling.

  22. Jerri says:

I love Swingtown! I am a mid-thirties long-time happily married woman who has never even experimented with swinging of any kind. I am educated and typical middle class. Swingtown viewers do not fit into any particular box.

I do not watch Swingtown for the “swinging,” though I do find that SMALL aspect of it to be interesting and entertaining. I watch for the quality drama presented through the depiction of complicated characters of all classes, ages, and lifestyles during a period in history that has been relatively ignored by fictional programming. I like the nostalgia of the wardrobe and the sets. I love the quality of the acting by a beautiful cast, though some would not necessarily be considered traditional beauties (of course, Tom and Trina are surely beautiful by anyone’s standards). I find all of the characters to be well-developed and sympathetic, even though they are all VERY different from one another.

I believe that I am a prime target for networks and advertisers. I am an avid television watcher who also likes to shop a great deal. I believe, or should I say know, that I am not the only Swingtown viewer of my kind. NBC and its advertisers would be sorely mistaken to ignore my voice in favor of the loud, self-righteous, hyper-sentitive critics of the show, most of whom have never even watched a complete episode.

Swingtown deserves another shot on a better night and during a better season for TV ratings. Perhaps the show and its viewers would be better served through a cable channel that does not have to answer to advertisers and prudes. I would gladly pay my advertising dollars to HBO or Showtime instead for an opportunity to continue getting to know the characters of Swingtown.

  23. Jerri says:

Holly–don’t forget that advertisers do not have MONEY to finance networks without viewers who are willing to go out an finance the advertisers. Simple economic principle.

Advertisers purchase ad time from networks.
Viewers purchase products from advertisers to finance and justify ads.
Therefore, viewers purchase ad time from networks.

Viewers really are at the top of that food chain. I understand that networks to not want to flagrantly tick off their advertisers, but they certainly don’t want to piss off their viewers even more so.

  24. Raymond says:

See, it’s generally uneducated comments like these that get me so frustrated about ratings board websites. For one – ratings bears no correlation to the quality of a show. For all I know Swingtown could be the best thing since sliced bread – in fact I know many a show that has bombed in the ratings which I came to enjoy and love (see Firefly, Veronica Mars etc etc etc). My point there is don’t get touchy fans when someone says the show is rating poorly (Moonlight etc etc). The people who comment on the ratings may have some small inherent bias depending on their like or dislike of the show but most of the time the analysis of the ratings is spot on regardless.

Now while I am willing to admit that ratings alone are not the sole indication of whether a show is renewed (remember guys – TV is a business, ratings often determine ad prices, but don’t forget different shows have different costs – how do you think cable or even the CW would survive without the fact that their shows come it a significantly lower cost than other nets). But they still count for something. Ratings are all relative and I’m sorry but comparing 30 Rock to Swingtown is just plain wrong. Reasons below:

    1) 30 Rock has considerable cross-promotional and advertising possibilities – many episodes feature GE products in an entertaining way and this kind of “product placement” is seen by many as the way of the future with DVR’s becoming more prevalent (see One Tree Hill for its blatant placement of Sunkist in nearly EVERY episode of Season 3 – also Friday Night Lights was partially saved because of this as well – see AT&T, Gatorade etc – but much for subtle than OTH). Anyway, as far as I know Swingtown does not have this (please correct me if I am wrong).
    2) NBC is a much weaker network than CBS so has to give more time for shows to grow – CBS is in a much stronger position and hence is less patient (given their history to cancel shows after 3 eps it is remarkable that Swingtown even aired its full season of 13 episodes).
    3) 30 Rock actually showed growth over a period of time (And debuted lower than it is doing now on a regular basis). Swingtown on the other hand performed very well in its first few outings but has consistently trended downwards to a completely un-economical ratings number.
    4) Move to Showtime? Yes, CBS and Showtime are owned by the same company but a move is simply not viable. The cost of Showtime show would be considerably less than that of a network show – and while I agree that CBS seems very vested in the show (the overall deal with creator, DVD coming out etc) I still believe that it will not air on CBS at any point (and Showtime is such a highly unlikely prospect) that I think saying that it is CBS’ 30 Rock just plain wrong.

  25. xerxes says:

    Raymond
You made your points very well. Very educational. Hope you don’t mind me saying I hope you are dead wrong. Here’s a few things that give me even a glimmer of hope.
    a) CBS threw a big ‘online block party’ for the final episode of the season. Why? They didn’t have to do that if the show was being cancelled. What a monumental waste of time and resources. Yet they did it. Then the site administrator asks for fan input for favorite scenes because CBS is planning to put together a compilation for the web site, “to tide you over” – his words, not mine. Tide us over for what, if the show is being cancelled? And why put a compilation for a cancelled show on the web site?
    b) We received info from an affiliate source that clips from Swingtown were included in the fall promotional package sent to affiliates, which he says is never done unless a show is coming back.
    c) August 16th – two weeks before the fall season starts, Nina Tassler says in a recorded interview regarding the renewal of Swingtown – “we don’t know. And that’s the truth.”

So sure, I might be looking at these occurences through slightly rose colored glasses, but there seems to be some evidence that CBS has not given up on this show despite the ratings. Again I ask, “why bothering doing or saying these things if there is no reason to hope for a renewal of any kind?”

  26. Raymond says:

No xerxes not at all – and I am willing to admit that something surprising could happen – and you are certainly more aware of these issues than I am (I was shocked to see that a DVD release was even happening!). Despite these “events” I’m just not convinced – although I am happy to say that I hope for your sake you are right (I truly believed that VM could have returned for a 4th season but all the indications eg making a “pilot” of the updated show etc but didn’t and I lost one of my fave shows)

  27. Mike G. says:

You know, we all need to become Nielsen families or somehow get involved with the ratings. Almost without exception, every time a show in the past year has been canceled or is on the bubble, the fans seem to come out of the wood works. How is it that there could be so many people interested in these low performing shows, yet Nielsen numbers don’t support it? I don’t need to list the shows that I am referring to, you all know which ones I mean.

  28. Julia says:

Mike, the amount of fans who are on the internet for these sort of shows number in the thousands, at the very most. For some of them, it’s more like a very vocal couple hundred. The ratings definitely reflect that at least that many people watch, so I’m not sure how the Nielsen numbers aren’t supporting anything.

Nielsen numbers are not perfect, I’m sure. But they aren’t too far off. While a second for profit ratings measurement company would have a very very hard time even getting started, I think it would be really great if an independent not for profit company could come along and measure audiences to verify Nielsen’s numbers. My guess is they would be within a point or two across the board. And when I become a billionaire, I’m going to do just that. ;)

  29. Guess Who says:

Swingtown is a steaming pile of – you know what. Im just glad its finally off the air. Advertisers withdrew support because the buyers of its products let them know in no uncertain terms they were angry they sponsored a sick show like that in the first place. Theres no shortage of sleaze on pay cable but I doubt a show with such a large cast could make it there. If it gets 4 million viewers on CBS it would be lucky to get 1 million on pay cable.

  30. sailorgirl says:

*rolls my eyes to the comment above*
how do the networks take into account the use of pvr s these days?? i’m not a neilson family but due to work and family commitments, i pvr most of the shows i like, to watch on the weekend when i have the time to do so…could someone explain the neilson family to me, i have an idea and just wonder, if they are strapped to their couch and need to watch tv on a friday night instead of going out for dinner or a movie

i just loved swingtown, i saw it advertised the beginning of the new television season last year and waited patiently for it to air, i just hate the idea of losing it just as it starts to get juicy and i got so invested in the characters

  31. Crab Apple says:

The network finally came up with a hip, sexy new series and “poof” – it’s gone. I loved that show and so did many friends. I thought the season developed very nicely. We were really getting caught up with the characters and the storyline and I am so disappointed that they are ending it. CBS should be ashamed of themselves.

  32. Swede says:

Please sign this petition to give Swingtown a second season!!

    http://www.petitiononline.com/stcbs/petition.html

Please pass the link on or blog it some place!!

  33. Kim Boyle says:

Love Swingtown – please bring it back. Love the characters and can’t wait to see what happens next. The women on the show are incredible actors.

  34. kenju says:

I might agree to watch 30 Rock if CBS will bring Swingtown back – but I wouldn’t agree to watch Couric ever.

  35. hookedonmick says:

I am one of the Moonlight fans that was mentioned earlier in a comment. I am not here to bash Swingtown, because I have never watched it. However, I do know how you feel about getting caught up with your show. Wanting to see it continue and especially feeling like your show wasn’t promoted. I say campaign, do what you want to save your show. Just don’t lump all ML fans together. I agree Swingtown is not the reason ML was cancelled. It was due more to backstage bickering and people not getting along, as well execs not liking it. I wish you luck, and don’t stop fighting for what you believe in, just like I am not.

  36. justme says:

I’d be thrilled to see Swingtown canceled. It seems like too many shows these days are relying on sex to get viewers watching and less on decent story lines. In an age with so many stds, broken marriages, unwanted pregnancies etc you’d think people would start to realize that maybe they need to make serious changes in the way they treat their bodies and use other people for their own self serving purposes. All these stupid networks who promote this gutter type of prgramming should be ashamed of themselves, but money talks and sex sells, so that’s all they care about. And that’s why A.I.D.S. and all these other nasty stds will continue to reak havok in so many lives.

  37. Shelly says:

Relying on sex? .. This show was so much more than sex . I think I speak for many when I say there was a connection moreso with the time period . The whole 70’s nostalgia feeling was what kept me interested and a true fan throughout. I don’t think it was given a true run . Bring it back and see what happens . I for one am IN !!

  38. justme says:

Shelly, I get nostalgic about the 70’s and 80’s as well because it was part of my childhood. However I don’t need to see a show that attempts to make promiscuity seem cool. What is nostalgic about watching a bunch of swingers get it on and wife swapping just because it happens to be set in the 70’s?

All you Swingtown fans don’t despair too much because they’ve just come out with a new show called Californication.

  39. Debbie says:

Please bring back Swingtown! This is my favorite show – I loved the actors, the plot, and the authenticity of the decade, they nailed it down on every detail of the decor, clothing and hairstyles! I miss this show every week – I am extremely disappointed that we are going to be left in limbo and not have any closure on plot lines. I heard Bravo is airing the first 13 episodes. I planned to watch all episodes again and to purchase the DVD when it came out but that is not enough! We need more Swingtown!! Please, please bring it back!!!

  40. sharlene says:

well here we go again,, finally a show that our age group from the being
born in the 50s . how we can relate to the music.clothes the different
hairstyles and the freelove , sex , drugs, and rock and roll. the
exectutives go ahead and take the best show off that cbs has had in years
i just hope that a cable station will buy it.. just as soon as we get
in to a routine,, oh cant wait for thursday at 10 swingtown is on, then
they changed to friday, well they might as well cancelled then, the
    worst time slot….
i wish they would bring in back………….

  41. Enlightened says:

Oh yes Sharlene let’s all remember the fond times of “the freelove , sex , drugs, and rock and roll”. Are you insane?? And you guys call this a great show. Tell me what was great about it?? This is why kids are so screwed up today because they have screwed up low class parents who don’t teach them any values or morals.

  42. Tracy says:

Um, no. Kids are screwed up today because parents don’t teach them anymore. They believe TV should act as nannies. Parents have control. TV is for entertainment purposes. It doesn’t help when parents are letting their kids idolize people like Jaime Lynn Spears, who got pregnant at 16. Just look at the Vice Presidential hopeful Sarah Palin who has to deal with a 17 year old daughter who is pregnant. Look at all the under-age girls in Gloucester who got pregnant. That was before “Swingtown” ever aired. How is it that people never fault soap operas for what they show? Those are on during the day in the Summer when kids are out of school. Nobody ever says anything about them. Oh wait, they’re in Proctor & Gambles pocket! Can’t say anything about them. Enlightened, you should know that “Swingtown” for the most part was shown at 10PM. If any little kid is up at that time then it is the parents fault. Just like if they were to switch on CW at 11PM and see “Sex and the City” on syndicated. There are a lot of things worse than sexuality on TV. How about violence for instance? CBS shows tons of it. How else can you explain people making fun, calling it the Crime Network?

I’m glad that Bravo will be re-airing it again and that the DVD will be coming out sooner than some other programs. Obviously, it is deserving!

  43. Cherie Gunn says:

I love Swingtown! It is a very original gritty drama that give up a honest look at the 70’s. Why does everything that is different ratings must be the most important thing? Just like with Jericho and 30 rock they took a chance to give it an opporutunity to catch on. Give Swingtown the same chance. Any thing we can do as fans to give it a second chance we should do it.

I love Swingtown. I did not miss a single episode and I truly hope that they will put it on for another season or more! If not more, they could at least tie up lose ends and let us know what direction the characters lives go in…just a suggestion!

  45. Jen says:

I was meaning they could air a few episodes letting us all feel closure on the show. I really do hope there is more to come however.

I can’t believe that Swingtown was cancelled. That was the only show that made Friday nights worth watching. Friday nights are boring now that swingtown is gone. Bring back a show worth watching. How will we ever know how it ended…

I did not care to read further into the above articles or comments bc I have read enuf of the the critics that are fans like myself and those that can not see beyond the sex. This show is not just sex, but it bares a fundamental emotion to those that are in long term relationships. Yes emotions are being explored as well but if this show is not give at least a second chance we will never really be able to explore those areas that in life that so many are afraid to confront as individuals and as couples.
