Thursday, September 18: Flashpoint Shines for CBS, Supernatural’s Strong Debut

Posted on 19 September 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard CBS FOX NBC ABC Uni CW
Total Viewers (million) 9.29 5.44 5.43 5.24 4.53 4.17
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 2.3/7 2.4/7 1.8/5 1.8/5 1.9/6 1.8/5
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 1.4/4 2.2/7 1.6/5 1.6/5 2.3/7 1.7/5

CBS led in total viewers, though Fox led among 18-49 year olds and 18-34 year olds (where CBS was in last). But two CSI repeats and Flashpoint (9.68 million, 2.6/7 rating/share with 18-49 year olds) led CBS to a fairly wide Margin in total viewers. Update: not a surprise, CBS has renewed Flashpoint.

Hole in the Wall is deteriorating for Fox, down to only 4.722 million viewers though it did still get a 2.0 rating among 18-49 year olds and outside of Univision, won the 8pm hour with 18-34 year olds. Kitchen Nightmares was stronger both overall (6.15 million) and in the demos with a 2.8/8 with 18-49 year olds and a 2.6/8 among 18-34 year olds. First in its hour in both categories.

The CW season premiere of Smallville led off with 4.383 million viewers and a 1.8/6 in both demo categories. It was down around 14% versus last year’s season premiere (9/27/07) of 5.08 million viewers, but only down about 5% among 18-49 year olds where last year it had a 1.9.

The drop in viewers for Smallville was offset somewhat by the gain in viewers for the premiere of one of my favorite shows, Supernatural which averaged 3.956 million viewer from 9p-10p and a 1.7/5 among 18-49 year olds. Last year’s season premiere on 10/4/07 had 2.97 million viewers and an 18-49 rating of 1.2, so the gains in viewers are ~33% versus last year and ~42% among 18-49 year olds. Way to go Supernatural!

Of course while not exactly the same as the NFL’s exhibition season of completely meaningless games, with ABC, CBS and NBC all running their fair share of reruns, it’s definitely not the same landscape as next week when original episodes will air across the board.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Overnight Ratings: Local metered-market ratings service of Nielsen Station Index (NSI) in which household ratings and shares are provided to clients the morning following the day or evening of telecast. While routinely used for “next day” immediate analysis, these fast affiliate ratings are by process inaccurate for programs that air live across a network since they represent affiliate time period performance. For example, last night’s 10-11pm affiliate #’s would reflect 10pm on the East Coast but also 10pm on the West Coast which for a live event would not represent the same broadcast or portion of the broadcast.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

LIVE+SD: The number that watched a program either while it was broadcast OR watched via DVR on the same day [through 3AM the next day] the program was broadcast.

So Smallville is not that bad right? I mean good in demos etc.

Technical question: in the markets Smallville didn’t air because baseball etc are included in those numbers? if not that number will go up or down?

  2. Kyle says:

Smallville has been on for quite some time. The show is still great, but I imagine they won’t have the viewers of past years just from time and from losing Michael Rosenbaum.

  3. Bob says:

CW way up on last season. SN’s numbers are surprising

  4. Mel says:

    Good for SN!!!!!
It was a really good episode.

  5. Rhuw Morgan says:

I think its helped that Supernatural got its premier before Greys and CSI were back, I’m pretty sure last years premiered when they had allready been on the air for a couple of weeks. Hopefully some new viewers will stick around now they’ve seen how good the show is.

  6. Robert Seidman says:

Rhuw, you are correct, last year SN had a full slate of first-run competition up against it.

  7. Bill Gorman says:

Gabriela, there are many factors that cause the overnight affiliate ratings to change before the final ratings. The airing of something like a baseball game in some markets could reduce the final ratings somewhat from what is reported overnight.

  8. CAEdge says:

Supernatural is my new favorite show and I’m glad it’s doing better. The chit chat around the office today was about it. I think word is getting around.

I think it would have MUCH higher numbers if it was on another network…

  9. Nick says:

Is it just me or is CW’s numbers higher than last seasons?

  10. Robert Seidman says:

Nick, is it just me, or didn’t you read the post where we listed last years numbers for those two shows…

  11. Nick says:

lol, i just look at the numbers thats it

  12. Robert Seidman says:

Nick, no problem. I suspect that’s what most do…

  13. Bill Gorman says:

    >> lol, i just look at the numbers thats it

Nick, That’s why we make them so *pretty*.

  14. Julia says:

    PRETTY!

It’s the reason I keep coming back!

  15. Andy says:

Nice to see Supernatural do so well.

And with no promotion, too! You’d think that’d give a message to the CW as to where their priorities should be, but I’m sure it won’t.

Hopefully the viewers stick around and it keeps 3.5 million or so for the season.

  16. Ness says:

YAY FOR SUPERNATURAL!!! Just knowing that they have done so well in the beginning of this season makes me so happy! The season premiere was intense and one of the better episodes of the series, and I’m glad to see such high numbers…which were absent last season….though, I hope it will still stay strong when the big shows come back on Thursdays…though, I think this also shows how well SN could do if it didn’t air opposite such major shows on tv….

  17. wilq says:

What about “It’s always sunny in Philadelphia”? Any ratings on that?

  18. Bill Gorman says:

wilq, We don’t see overnight ratings for cable shows, and I’d doubt that show would make the top 40 weekly cable shows we do see on Tuesdays.

FX is very proud of the ratings growth it seems, but they aren’t giving out any numbers I can find:

  19. Batgirl1979 says:

I agree with CAEdge that Supernatural would get higher ratings on a different network and it would help if they at least tried to promote the show a little. I have never seen an advertisement for the show. Though that could be because I live in Canada and we don’t have the CW, and they keep changing what channel the show airs on here. I thought the premiere was excellent. I am a 29 year old and Supernatural is my favourite show but my parents(whom I don’t live with) who are in their 50’s also watch it and love it.

  20. Alec says:

Batgirl1979 i disagree about the rating for supernatural being better, altohugh the me higher, the show would never have lasted 4 seasons on a regular network because MOST niche sci fi shows dont last very long on netwrk tv

  21. Batgirl1979 says:

I believe that it would get higher ratings on a more popular network but I do agree with you that the ratings it would recieve probably wouldn’t be high enough for those networks and that it wouldn’t have lasted this long. I guess I’m just upset at the marketing of the show. It would also help if it wasn’t paired up against C.S.I.

  22. Heather says:

It’s good to see Supernatural gaining momentum while it’s still on the air (as opposed to after it’s been canceled and people start stumbling over the DVDs and syndicated reruns… and it’s too late). I agree, the CW’s marketing of the show is abysmal and they really should get a clue. Quit spending millions on ads for ratings tankers and promote the shows that keep people coming back- AND keep sucking in new blood.
