Early Ratings: America Still Loves Dancing, Criminals and Crime Scenes

Posted on 25 September 2008 by Robert Seidman

But the high tech cars and pretty girls didn’t fare so well…

The early meter market numbers are always subject to change, and the 15 minute-ish address last night from President Bush at 9pm makes them much more subject to change than normal. CBS looks to have won the night, though the Wednesday 8pm-9pm comedy block got off to a rough start with the New Adventures of Old Christine pulling but a 4.3/7 (household rating/share) and Gary Unmarried had a 4.6./7 at 8:30pm. Both came in fourth in their time slots. But CBS rebounded nicely with crime procedurals with Criminal Minds at a 10.0/15 and CSI: NY at a 10.3/17. The CSI franchise is off to a good start for the 2008-2009 season (CSI: Miami had big numbers on Monday).

Yet another hour of Dancing with the Stars won the 8pm slot with an 8pm 10.3/17. David Blaine from 9pm-11pm netted a 5.0/8, and these numbers were likely aided by the Bush address as the first half hour had the highest rating (6.7/10).

Bones scored a 6.1/10 in the metered markets, but Fox’s comedies are DOA with ‘Til Death snaring a 3.2/5 and Do Not Disturb scoring a 2.5/4. The only reason we can come up with that Do Not Disturb has not already been replaced is that Fox has nothing to replace it with.

The series premiere of Knight Rider only pulled a 4.9/8 at 8pm. It will be interesting to see how it did among 18-49 year olds. America’s Got Talent scored a 6.8/10 at 9pm, and at 10pm the season premiere of Lipstick Jungle sunk to a 4.7/7. Ouch.

America’s Next Top Model on CW had a 3.3/5 in the early metered market report. We’ll have the full overnight report up with viewer numbers and demographic data as soon as we’ve seen the fast affiliate data.

  1. Wopa says:

The CBS sitcoms are DOA too.

  2. It does look that way…

  3. richard says:

Did Fox air the Bush Address last night ?

    thz

  4. Richard, I’m not sure — if anyone knows, please chime in.

  5. Julia says:

Trying to mesh a new comedy night with the standard procedurals was never going to work. With the state that most sit coms are in, I’m not sure why CBS decided they needed a new comedy night anyway.

Can someone explain to me why NBC picked up Lipstick Jungle? I mean, the ratings were bad last season, and the show itself is unwatchable.

  6. Julia, I can only speculate re: Lipstick Jungle, but my guesses are some combination of:

    1. it might have held some promise with women in the demos
    2. given the screwed up strike season they wanted to give it another chance
    3. Ben Silverman thinks Brooke Shields is hot.

  7. Bill Gorman says:

Julia, CBS’s comedies are the only thing that gets them younger skewed audiences. I don’t blame them for trying to expand them. As to how they went about it, we have the luxury of being Monday morning quarterbacks. ;)

My guess is that Lipstick Jungle was one of the unique (to last season) breed of “keep it, because we’ve got nothing in the pipeline” shows that are on a very short leash.

  8. Bob says:

Gary Unmarried was wasted here. It really needs to be moved after 2 1/2.

  9. Emmy says:

    America still loves dancing??

didnt they get like a 14 on monday?? and now its down to 10.3.. in week One! over exposure!

  10. Andrea says:

Didn’t LJ fall just on the right side of the bubble of the TV index?

  11. Outlander says:

Fox aired Bush’s address both on its broadcast and FNC.

Knight Rider was so awful last night, it wasn’t funny. I mean, it was just…ugly bad. I can’t even come up with a fully coherent argument as to why it was bad, it was so bad. What bothers me is that quality shows like Terminator aren’t pulling absurdly better ratings than crap shows like Knight Rider. But, I’ve beaten the Terminator horse enough for one week. :)

  12. richard says:

    Emmy

american likes people singing, dancing , showing their talents , choosing one million dollars suitcase…

  13. Mike says:

Gary Unmarried was very funny. I’ll be watching from here on out. Hope CBS gives them a chance.

  14. Gerry says:

Knight Rider–how long can a UPN quality show last on major network TV?

  15. The “Unique Breed” list would be interesting. Seems like Lipstick Jungle, Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone would top that list.

  16. Julia says:

Uh oh. More internal server errors. :(

  17. indeed, Julia. Hopefully our day won’t be as bad as Knight Riders’ (apparently America’s Next Top Model beat it among 18-34 year olds — aggregate, not just women).

  18. Julia says:

Just goes to show you that not every special that does well should be turned into a regular TV show!

  19. Gusar says:

Yeah, Knight Rider was so beyond awful, words don’t exist to express how. And this is coming from someone who genuinely liked the Pilot earlier this year. No matter what the overnight numbers will say, I’ve a strong feeling most of these people tuned in to check it out and won’t return next week. If they do, the world is officially insane. Is there a chance we’ll see half-hourly numbers for Knight Rider? Just for curiosity’s sake.

  20. Buddy says:

Do Not Disturb is funny….talented cast.

  21. half hour numbers for Knight Rider 7.192mm at 8-8:30, 7.408mm 8:30-9. It was 3rd among 18-49 year olds and fourth among 18-34 year olds for the hour

  22. Steve says:

Criminal Minds was amazing last night!!! I am hooked on this show.

  23. neps says:

but Knight Rider was number 1 in Males 25-54 – at least they got that…

  24. Julia says:

Hmm. Comments seem to be turned off for the ratings post?

So is there any way that NBC can keep a show that barely premiered to 3 mil on the air? Even if they don’t have a lot of choices of what to replace it with? I mean, so far this week, three CW shows have already beaten Lipstick Jungle.

  25. julia, the comments thing was inadvertent as was the 3 million for LJ — both have been fixed.
