Early Thursday Nielsen Ratings: Survivor and Grey’s Anatomy; Old But Not Dead

Posted on 26 September 2008 by Robert Seidman

Full details now available.

Remembering as always that these numbers are very preliminary (and also not nearly as much fun since they lack total viewers and demos) here are some early metered market numbers from Thursday night.

Update 9:00 AM PDT: Grey’s Anatomy had 18.3 million viewers and crushed in the demos with a 7.4/18 among 18-49 year old and nearly an 8.0/21 among 18-34 year olds. The Office had 9.20 million and a 4.5/10 with 18-49s and a 6.1/15 with 18-34s. Not shabby at all up aganst Grey’s (but again, no new CSI for either to compete with). Kitchen Nightmares definitely had a tough time between 8p-10p, see Bill’s post sometime soon. Survivor was still strong with 18-49s (4.5/12ish) but as typical less so with 18-34s (2.7/8). ER’s premiere drew 7.9 million and a 3.3/8 among 18-49s and a 3.0/6 among 18-34s. Not shabby demo numbers for the start of its final season.

Grey’s Anatomy had an 11.0/17 (household rating/share) for its two hour premiere. If those numbers hold up, it would be down a bit from the two hour season finale (which scored an 11.8/19 and 18.09 million viewers in the final numbers last May ) and down even more from its premiere last September when it pulled a 13.2/20 and 20.9 million in the final numbers. And then, it was airing against a new CSI, last night CSI was a repeat. The two hour finale in May also didn’t run against a fresh CSI either though.

Survivor is experiencing attrition as well, but the old girl is long in tooth and still had a 7.5/12 from 8pm-10pm. Last year in the final numbers, Survivor China debuted to a 9.0/15. But both the Survivor or the Grey’s premieres last year seemed to only be one hour.

My Name is Earl pulled in a Knight Rider-esque 4.3/7 and The Office rose to a 5.8/9 in a one hour premiere from 9p-10pm and the tale for The Office will be in how it does in the 18-49 and 18-34 demos – which we imagine will be good. We won’t see that data for at least another hour (it’s 7:25am PDT as I write this).

Gordon Ramsay seems to have finally had a bad night as two episodes of Kitchen Nightmares only drew a 3.2/5 between 8pm-10pm. Meanwhile on the CW, Smallville had a 2.8/4 and Supernatural a 2.5/4. Last week in these same preliminary metered market numbers, Smallville had a 2.9/5 and Supernatural a 2.7/4, so it looks like both mostly held up versus increased competition.

i have a feelin greys will drop a bit in its next episode. because last night was Boring. im not sure if i will continue to watch the show.

  2. Andre says:

OMG! I’m dying to see ER’s ratings. Last night’s episode was just AMAZING!

  3. Andre ER had a 5.9/10 in the metered market numbers (CSI rerun had a 6.8/11). But I don’t think the ratings for ER really matter too much since this is its final season regardless. Glad it was a great episode though!

  4. FrankJ says:

Wow what is up with this season’s premieres and the dropping ratings? It seems like every scripted show is opening to lower numbers this year.

  5. Andre says:

Thanks Robert. I so agree with you. At least ER will end with some dignity, if the next espisodes follow last night’s greatness (or even increase it). Looking foward to the rest of the show!

  6. Jonathan B. says:

That number for The Office is up 3-4% from last year’s early numbers, so since its final numbers were at 9.6 million, it COULD top 10 million, which would be quite excellent. Also, since last season’s premiere was a series high in Adults 18-49, this could be too. Best of all though, the episode was quite awesome.

  7. Cameron P says:

Great to here that Supernatural numbers are doing so well, with little drop off from both the season premiere combined with more competition it looks good.

  8. Roger says:

@FrankJ: Not every show – Supernatural was up something like 33% from it’s premiere last year. :)

  9. Supernatural did 3.2+ million last night, but Smallville had 4.1 million. I think keeping 80% of the lead-in versus tougher competition is pretty good. We’ll see if CW issues a press release ;-)
