House Has Most DVR Viewers, 90210 Has Greatest DVR Increase

Posted on 06 October 2008 by Bill Gorman

For the week of September 15-21, Fox’s House had the largest audience via DVR viewing with 4.064 million viewers via DVRs, one of the largest DVR audiences we have measured to date. In fact, Fox had the top 5 biggest DVR audiences including FringeBones and  Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles and Prison Break. Rounding out the top ten for the largest DVR audiences were Big Brother, America’s Top Model, two America’s Got Talents, 90210 and Kitchen Nightmares.

The CW’s 90210 had the greatest percentage boost from DVR viewing, increasing 40.8% from its Live viewing. Rounding out the top 10 for largest % increase via DVR viewing was Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, America’s Top Model, House, Prison Break, Bones, Gossip Girl, Fringe Smallville, and One Tree Hill.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Fox and CW shows dominate in both lists. The other broadcast networks had yet to premiere their new fall shows during this reporting week. Next week we will have Live+7 DVR numbers for the first week of the new 2008-9 season.

Definitions:

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – LiveLive + Same Day (Live+SD) and Live + 7 Day.  Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live + Same Day include viewing during the same  broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.  Live+ 7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Joseph H says:

Glad to see TSCC remains near the top! I believe the time shifted numbers are a little better than the DVR numbers from last week’s posting.

  2. Jim says:

Good news for TSCC. I would really hate to see it get canceled. It is my favorite show on TV! I hope they move it to Wednesday night at 9pm (after Bones). Perhaps that would help the live numbers.

  3. Anthony says:

The DVR numbers for Prison Break are very encouraging too. They should move both TSCC and PB to another time and another day.

  4. Gusar says:

Yup, for both PB and TSCC, these numbers clearly show that there’s interest in both, but there’s just too much else on at the same time.

TSCC at Wednesdays after Bones, pretty much the entire internet (including the TV Guide critic Matt Roush) thinks it’s a good idea.

  5. Izzy says:

Good to see TSCC and Supernatural continue to hold on and increase in timeshift now if only we can get more viewers in live broadcasts!

  6. Johnthemon says:

Fox don’t cancel TSCC! it’s getting amazing dvr numbers! Don’t kill it!

  7. CAEdge says:

How do they track the number of times people might watch a show they have recorded? We watch Smallville and Supernatural AT LEAST twice (usually more) before the next episode airs.

  8. Bill Gorman says:

CAEdge, Nielsen is able to track the DVR viewing of shows for Nielsen families using their people meters. I’m not sure how they’d handle multiple viewings.

  9. Calvin says:

The point in having a DVR is so that you can skip through the commercials. Why would any business want to advertise to DVR users?

  10. Gleebo says:

Wow, Fringe is right up there with House even when you factor in the DVR. I think its the closest thing FOX has had to a hit show in a long time. One has to wonder though what kind of numbers TSCC would be getting in the post House slot though…
