10/13 Update: Production on both Valentine and Easy Money has been shut down.
This list is updated on a weekly basis, to see the latest list, click here.
The second week of our Renew/Cancel Index finds the entire Sunday night line up on the CW, (In Harm’s Way, Valentine, and Easy Money) produced by Media Rights Capital, premiering at the top of our most likely to be cancelled list. But we really don’t know anything about the deal between the CW and Media Rights Capital, it may very well put those shows in a special category where they are resistant to cancellation, or not. If anyone knows, we’re listening. Update: Alert commenter Lieven noted that In Harm’s Way is unscripted and should be in the bottom list.
Premiering last week and jumping right onto the hot seat behind the CW Sunday shows is NBC’s Life, a marginal hold over from last season that perhaps is past its sell by date. Pushing Daisies, next in line, is in a similar bring back from the strike to a dangerously slow start. In a result cheered by many disgruntled Moonlight fans, its time slot “replacement” on Friday The Ex List debuted to terrible numbers. ‘Til Death and The New Adventures of Old Christine were already in the cancel zone last week, but Everybody Hates Chris and The Game debuted into CW’s new Friday graveyard looking like the walking dead. The season premiere of Numb3rs was very weak, but remember that last season it was one of only five shows to survive beneath the magic 0.92 cancellation index line. Perhaps it has a special pass from CBS.
Remember, its still only the second week of the season and the situation is very fluid. Show results go up and down, as do their networks 18-49 averages. I don’t hold out a lot of hope for the shows at the top (most likely to be cancelled), but I think plenty of the shows in the middle of the list can migrate into the safe zone before its too late. Edit: In response to a point by commenter Holly, let me be clear that “cancellation” in terms of this Index means a show doesn’t get renewed for another season, not that it gets pulled off the schedule in the middle of its run this season. Getting pulled from the schedule before the end of a season is something that’s likely only for the very worst performing shows at the very top of the list.
Note: Only shows that have premiered during the 2008-9 broadcast season are on this list.
Here is the Renew/Cancel Index list of scripted shows for results as of 10/5/08 ranked from most likely to be cancelled to least likely to be cancelled:

The Renew/Cancel Index is a show’s Season To Date adults 18-49 viewership divided by its networks Season to Date average 18-49 viewership.
*CW MRC – The CW has leased its entire Sunday night to Media Rights Capital (MRC). We’ve been toldand Mediaweek has reported (correct us if we’re wrong) that these shows are contractually in for a minimum of a 13 week run regardless of results.
**Friday – Friday is quickly becoming an 18-49 wasteland, so these shows may be allowed a lower threshold for success than shows on other nights.
How did we come up with our list? We found that last season, the future of a show was nearly directly related to its adults 18-49 average viewers divided by its networks 18-49 average viewers. Many other factors may matter, but they all seemed to boil down to that one number. Last season, if a show had better than 92% of its network’s average 18-49 viewership (0.92 in our index) it was pretty safe, below that level it was in danger. We’re not sure what the magic number will be this season, but I’m very confident that our index will still indicate the shows most likely to be cancelled compared to those less likely to be cancelled.
—————————————————————-
For unscripted shows, the results from last season were far less cut and dried. A similar relationship did seem to hold between 18-49 averages, but some unscripted shows survived with very low numbers. My conclusion was that some unscripted shows must be so cheap that they are expected to do little more than fill air time and produce little in the way of viewership. However, it’s likely that America’s Toughest Jobs, Wife Swap and Supernanny (Update: And In Harm’s Way) are in significant danger of being cancelled or not returning when their run is completed. Other shows can be judged by their relative position on our list ranked from most likely to be cancelled to least likely to be cancelled.

You should have a caveat for CBS in general, and Fridays in particular. GW and Numbers I doubt will be canceled, even if they appear at the top of the list all season long.
I think the special pass Numb3rs has from CBS is that it airs on Friday night. This demo index isn’t really fair to any series airing on Friday.
lol, beat me to the punch Andrea.
There should also probably be caveats re: Worst Week and CBS’ Wednesday 8pm comedy block. It’s somewhat apples-to-pears, but last year in the Monday 9:30pm slot, Christine had a 1.27, which is better than Worst Week’s 1.08. It’s clear Christine isn’t holding its own Wednesdays at 8pm, but last year it was better at retaining 2.5 Men’s 18-49 base on Mondays than Worst Week has been so far.
Please tell me you made those numbers up! How could Pushing Daisies possibly have a higher cancellation probability than the crappy “Knight Rider”??!!!
well for shows like pushing daisies remember it only has aired one episode. id check this chart on november 7 and that will give u a real idea after a few weeks of ratings and episodes. plus i hope pushing daisies doesnt get cancelled such a good show and its something i can watch with the girlfriend that she likes. chuck didnt do so good this week either which isnt freat but hopefully it did fine with the demos since that matters more
Unfortunately, the reason Pushing Daisies may look better in a few weeks is more likely going to be because the rest of ABC’s shows will be deflated as they won’t be premiere episodes. As much as I wish PD would suddenly get a huge increase, I’m not hopeful.
Jason, This index is based on how many viewers 18-49 a show has. Knight Rider had a 2.4 in the demo last week. Pushing Daisies only had a 2.0. NBC has a lot of problems in their schedule, so unless KR starts dropping (still possible) there is no way it’s getting canceled. On the other hand, not many shows will survive long with a 2.0 or lower, so Pushing Daisies is very much in danger if it’s ratings don’t improve.
Jason, Rob and Julia are right, things this early in the season are very fluid, show averages and network averages will rise and fall and the positions of the shows on this list will change.
That said, Pushing Daisies needs to make a big move for the better or The Pie Hole is going out of business.
I’m with Holly, plus KR again last week crushed almost all its competition with men 18-34 and men 18-49. It didn’t “crush” Bones in those demos, but it did beat Bones in those demos.
I really, really want Life to survive this season but the lack of promotions isn’t helping the show, together with Life being ping ponged between Monday and Fridays there’s a lot of confusion regarding the schedule for the show among fans. How do they expect this show to survive if there’s hardly any support from the Network?
i know the numbers are what they are, but its really unlikely that my name is earl will be canceled. it will be moved to 830 or 930 for a year before a pathetic network like nbc lets go of a show thats kind of well known.
I think that you can count on the indexes for all the NBC shows to improve after football season because NBC’s 18-49 network average will head down once Sunday Night Football ends.
And for Earl in particular, its just barely outside the safe zone now. I wouldn’t worry about it.
For the most part, I think the shows in the “Cancellation Possible” section aren’t in real danger of being pulled in the middle of their run. They’re more likely to be “bubble” shows or not given another season when it comes time for renewals.
Holly, you raise a good semantic point. To me (and the Index) “cancellation” means you don’t come back next year, not that you get yanked mid run. I’m going to edit the post to reflect that.
Maybe change it to “Renewal likely, renewal possible, renewal unlikely”?
I think people just get antsy when they see the word “cancellation” anywhere close to their favorite show.
Hi, why is Ghost Whisperer on the most likely to be canceled list? Its season 4 premiere had over nine million viewers.
Jason, GW and Numb3rs were exceptions on the index last year. Since they air on Friday, expectations are lower for them than the rest of the shows.
That “Cancellation Likely” just wasn’t working at the top, too confusing for many folks. I took it out until I can think of some better way to present things. Holly, took your suggestion and made the magic line a “renewal likely” line.
You know this list is also interesting in pointing out the difference between the networks approach too. CBS, I think is considered the most stable network, but it has the most programs on the negative side of that list. Well, part of that is also their relative lack of non-scripted. In reality, if these numbers stayed the same, I’d feel rather confident in saying Cold Case, Ghost Whisperer, Without a Trace, The Unit and Numb3rs would be back. It’s because most of the shows that fair similarly in 18-49 on other networks do not draw near the same total viewership and 25-54 numbers that the CBS shows do. Having the older viewership impacts ad rates, but their stability has insured they sell the ad space and hit their guarantees.
I think the “renewal likely” things work well. Looking at it, aside from ER, only one other show on that list would probably be in danger of not returning. It’s kind of like saying if you reach this threshold relative to your network there have to be some serious mitigating circumstances for the show to be in trouble, like you had with Bionic Woman and Big Shots (sharp downward plunges) on the list last season.
Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs aren’t going to be canceled. Hell, they probably have a few years left in those shows, because nothing else on a Friday would do much better. Fridays will soon turn into Saturdays though, so that’s why I said, “a few years left.”
Terminator will finish out its 13 episode season and they had to be prepared for that, because I doubt they signed a 24 episode deal with them. They might pull it and move it to Wednesday, or wait until January, because Monday Night Football won’t be on and nobody knows how DollHouse will perform.
Prison Break also won’t be going any where, because Fox produces that show(at least I think they do) and it’s getting close to 100 episodes. They’ll hold out for syndication, because they can make more money and it does good in other countries.
Sadly, Chuck will be canceled, because the NBC Monday night lineup seems to keep dropping. I’m happy that The Big Bang Theory is doing good though.
Without A Trace, Cold Case, and My Name is Earl won’t be going anywhere. Most of the shows I don’t watch, or I just Tivo them, but CBS isn’t canceling 4 of their “strong enough” shows. The Unit is done though.
How do you know that Chuck will be cancelled.Do you have any information from inside?I read that Nbc love this show and for that reason it renewed for a full second season?Does anyone have information about the future of this fantastic show?
No one knows anything about Chuck at this point. It’s early results are are almost to the level where renewal would be likely and the season is still young. Stay tuned.
I thought In Harm’s Way was a reality show, so isn’t it in the wrong category? I thought the first one was only for the scripted shows.
P.-B should get the boot already.
That show is going round and round in circles with stupidity!
As for the New Adventures of the old Christine they really shouldn’t have move it bad move.Even the repeats on Monday nights when it was on did pretty good alot of people watched it.Now they have put WW in her place the worst “comedy” ever phew.
90210 has already been renewed. You might want to note that on your list.
90210 has not been renewed. It was given a full season pick up.
well i guess I should be happy only two of the shows I watch are below the “Renewal Likely” line. I think once Terminator is cancelled/moved Chuck will do better.
I meant above the renewal likely line…sorry
John,
Chuck isn’t dependent on TSCC for numbers. If anything, the opposite is true.
Julia is correct, no show has been renewed. No official renewals will happen until much later in the season.
I am still considering whether to indicate additional show orders in this table (like have occurred for 90210, Fringe, Mentalist and a few others), but worry that things might start getting cluttered and even more confusing.
Lieven, you are correct, In Harm’s Way is unscripted, my bad. I will move it to the bottom list and edit the post.
Trying to make sure I get this. If we were to “rank” so to speak the shows on the CW in terms of success…and go by total viewers, (scripted only) we’d have #1 Smallville, #2 Supernatural #3 Gossip Girl #4 One Tree Hill #5 90210.
However, in terms of the list, it goes #1 90210 #2 Gossip Girl #3 Smallville #4 One Tree Hill #5 Supernatural. Now, how I understand this is this indicator is a measure of STD 18-49 (LIVE+SD) / the average of the network.
Do these numbers correlate more heavily to the 18-49 rating/share? Which has the five shows at … (assuming I understand these ratios correctly)
#1 GG 1.9/5 #2 90210 1.7/5 #3 OTH 1.9/4 #4 Smallville 1.6/4 #5 Supernatural 1.4/3
Clearly, that can’t be the order since SV/OTH are switched as well as GG/90210.
Do you see my confusion? Hopefully I explicitly stated my point. My final question is what the real indicator of network success is? Is Gossip Girl the “most successful” show on the CW, despite not having the most viewers? Also, Supernatural has increased its viewership by 42% from last season, more than any show on television. So is it really the 5th most successful show? That seems a little stilted to me, no?
Steve, This list takes the average number of 18-49 viewers for a show and divides it by the average number of 18-49 viewers for the network. The demo numbers Bill and Robert use here are demo viewer numbers instead of ratings points, which are less accurate because they involve more rounding. If the demo ratings you posted are from one week, then the reason they are in a different order on this list is because this list averages the demo from all the episodes of each show.
Steve, to a certain extent this Index is a product of the data we get and what predicted last season’s renewals and cancellations.
Is the 18-49 average the best indicator for show futures on the CW? Probably not. It’s probably the 18-34 average. Even more specifically, the female 18-34 average. But we don’t get any season to date 18-34 data for individual shows, so we use what we have. And that worked pretty well in predicting renewals and cancellations last season.
To answer some of your other questions:
Total viewership is not the success/failure measure used by the networks to determine the future of their shows. They each care about age demographic groups far more, mostly 18-49, but the CW cares about 18-34, and news operations care about 25-54.
18-49 ratings are directly related to 18-49 viewership. A demo ratings point is 1% of viewers in that demographic group in the US>
Share is just the portion of a demographic group that watched a show in that group currently tuned into television. To me, its redundant information, but we report it because everyone else does too.
I agree that share is mostly redundant, still especially at the granular level it’s sometimes useful. For example a week ago Monday Gossip Girl with a new episode place second (to Dancing with the Stars) out of the broadcast networks among 18-34 females race. You could have seen this by the ratings points too of course, but people say stuff like “Yes, but not many 18-34 year old women are watching TV to begin”. Share allows you to say, “OK, BUT of the all the 18-34 year old women who WERE watching TV that hour, 89% of them watched something other than Gossip Girl”.
Also, because of the general lack of cable data we have access to, the share info also allows us to intuit quite about about where broadcast is more and less dominant relative to cable.
I do not understand why it matters in this day and age when something is on. everyone i know anymore has a DVR. Every cable company and satellite company provide DVR’s I suppose some people out there do not have DVRs yet. Just like some people still use VCR’s (archaic technology). Like our house i have 2 DVRs going because on some nights i have 4 programs recording at once between cable and network and sometimes its a few days later before i get them watched.
I read somewhere that shows that are watched live or dvr same day get 1 rating and ones not watched till later in the week are another.
I think pushing daisies is to complicated and the repetitive of the so many hours days minutes seconds old someone was when they died gets old after awhile.
Knight rider had a chance to be a great show but the whole transforming kitt is a little much.
I think the nielsons are still not correct. There is no way to be 100% accurate unless all households had a ratings box. They always seem to cancel some good shows but then put junk on TV.
Jason, while everyone *you* know has a DVR, only about 25% of US households have one.
The day when everyone watches TV when they want to will arrive, but it’s not today.
I noticed both Prison Break and Terminator increased their index value by .05 from last week. This puts Prison Break near the .92 cut off and close to the safe area? Monday’s Terminator numbers were bigger than the previous week. So can we expect better placement on the chart for Terminator next time this chart is published? Perhaps there is some hope for us fans of these shows…
Just a few thoughts, since I am a little new to this .92 Cancellation/Renewal, which I do find very interesting.
I’m surprised by “Pushing Daisies” being so low on the scale, given the buzz the show produced in the Fall of 2007. It likely proves the damage that a writer’s strike can cause, and probably be chalked down as one of the casualties if the numbers don’t improve soon. Maybe this one will be a show that improves drastically because the numbers are so skewed early in the season?
I’m surprised that “The Simpsons” does so well in the demo after 20 years…but I suppose it makes sense that the majority of their core audience is still in this age range. I don’t go out of my way to DVR the show, but if it happens to be on when I am around in live time…I suppose I will still watch.
I’m happy for the poor CW for showing so well on the list with 90210. And, perhaps a little embarrassed to admit that I have been watching the show as a 33 year old guy!~ Sorry, it caught my curiosity and it stuck with me — for now. Maybe I’d rather watch this show than check my 401K balance? Yeah, I think so.
Maybe I should have a list of shows that “Make Me Forget About Our Economic Crisis The Best”
List? LOL. If so…this is how it would go for me for the first month or so of the 2008-2009 season… (This doesn’t mean anything about quality ranking…HAHA)
#1 90210 CW 4.0 Stars (Out of 4 stars) : I forget everything
#2 Desperate Housewives ABC 3.5 Stars: Premiere good, 2nd Episode “okay”
#3 Amazing Race CBS 2.5 Stars: Saw the premiere, but thats it so far.
#3 The Family Guy FOX 2.5 Stars : Last 2 shows “okay”…used to be better.
#5 Deal or No Deal NBC 2.0 Stars : In Fast Forward. Hey, got $1 million!!
#6 Two And A Half Men CBS 1.5 Stars: Premiere good, but can’t get into it again.
#7 Top Model CW 1.0 Stars: Eh, the tranny was interesting. Stopped
watching after a few episodes, though.
#8 Heros NBC 0.0 Stars: Stopped watching after the strike….Sadly
Outside of prime time Saturday Night Live gets 4.0 Stars and ties with 90210.
And, when Lost returns that will return back to the top of my “shows that make me forget about the economic crisis”.
Hi Robert,
Have you heard anything about Direct Tv maybe picking up Moonlight? Is it just a rumor? I read somewhere that Direct TV was in talks with Scifi Channel, and look what happened with Eureka, they got Degree deodarant to sponsor their shows and got a 21 episode deal out of it, but I know that they are a cable network show and don’t expect as big ratings as the major networks. Is it possible for SCIFI to take this approach with Moonlight, if Degree sponsored this show I would switch deodorants.
NOOOOOOO about Pushing Daisies. I can’t believe crap shows (90% of the list) are getting high ratings.
Although Life’s Friday numbers were low, the Monday airings were better – does that get factored in?
I’m in the process of moving residences and do not have my normal Internet access so I have seen nothing about directv and moonlight. I imagine it is just rumor due to news around Friday Night Lights now airing on DTV but the truth is I have absolutely no idea…
I suspect so as well, but I watched those episodes of Eureka that had the degree commercials and that season did better than I had anticipated, and they had some cool episodes despite the product placements. I was hoping for a long shot at best with the show, but I won’t give up untill next fall. You never really know, on account of what happened with family guy and all.
Family Guy was not a ratings loser. It was taken off the air due to its extremely controversial content. But then it had such huge DVD sales that FOX decided money was worth the controversy.
Diane, these numbers should just be for the regular timeslot airing of Life, but I have been known to make mistakes. I will double check.
@ Andrea
If Chuck and TSCC are targeting the same market (as everyone seems to agree they are) then moving/cancelling TSCC would have a positive effect on the ratings. I hope it’s a move for TSCC (to the 9:00 slot on wednesday) and not cancellation, but I would rather TSCC be cancelled than Chuck. Although Chuck’s cancellation is a long shot at this point.
I would prefer Chuck be cancelled.
Pushing Daisies was cheated out of a full season last year. How awful would it be if the show got cancelled before receiving a full season this year? After only 11 episodes total, it has nearly topped my list of favorite shows, and out of all of them it is the only one I would truly be upset about if it were cancelled. That’s what I don’t like about television. Shows get cancelled, not because they aren’t good, but because not enough people watch them to be considered a “success”. Hopefully ABC lets Pushing Daisies last a little longer. After all, the shortened first season and 9 and 1/2 month hiatus is probably the biggest reason Daisies isn’t doing as well right now. With time, I think it will be able to pick back up its numbers. That’s the reason that so many good shows are cut off after only a few episodes: they aren’t around long enough for people to discover them.
For those T:TSCC fans out here… it appears Fox has ok’d writing two additional episodes past the original 13.

That’s awesome!! At least this will give the writers a chance to give proper closure to the show assuming Fox ends it then.
i can tell you what happened to “pushing daisies.” i loved the show last year. then the writer’s strike interferred. but that wasn’t what kept me from watching. this year fox is airing “bones” against “pushing daisies.” since i love “bones” as well, i had a choice to make. i chose “bones” and i suspect many others are as well. i had my son dvr pushing daisies, but it isn’t the same as watching.
The CW sunday night shows shouldn’t be on the list. They are probably going to get cancelled however they are obligated to finish there 13 episode orders, and maybe one of them will be renewed no matter what. Everybody Hates Chris and The Game are doing terrible but they do air on friday so maybe the CW will give both shows a break until they develop new comedies. The Ex List will probably be axed after another airing but Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs won’t be cancelled no matter what there results are. Life and Pushing Daisies are examples of freshman shows that started out ok last season but are doing bad now in there slots and Life airs friday night at 10 pm.
Out of the CW line-up on Sunday night, Valentine is defintely one to watch. I hope it does not get cancelled. We need more GOOD romatic comedies like this show. Too many shows this day are about who has the coolest special effects and biggest explosions, rather then quality plot and script.
i think they shuld cancel one tree hill,it’s stupid show. Not valentine, valentine is charming show
CW does a poor job of advertising their Sunday line up. It is no coinicidence that the top two most likely to be cancelled shows come from those spots.
Valentine is a good show and would have a much better chance if the CW invested some time into marketing it.
