Based on the early metered market data, Fox had a commanding lead Sunday night thanks to huge football overrun with the Dallas Cowboys losing to the Arizona Cardinals in overtime. The overrun led to a 17.1/31 (household rating/share) from 7-7:30 and a 15.0/26 from 7:30-8p. I think the game wound up going until around 7:45 with “The OT” being on the last 15 minutes of that half hour. Even in losing, and only partial national coverage, the Dallas Cowboys are still a ratings juggernaut.
Game 3 of the NLCS pulled in a 6.8/9 from 8p-11p for Fox. The Los Angeles Dodgers took an early lead and never looked back. And remember, the data for live sporting events always changes.
Speaking of taking an early lead and never looking back, the San Diego Chargers thumped the Tom Brady-less New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football. The game scored a below average 9.0/15 from 8:30p-11p, but even a lousy football game scored a higher rating than PLAYOFF baseball. Can there be any doubt what sport is really America’s pastime?
Over on ABC Desperate Housewives scored a 10.1/15 to be the most-watched non sporting related event of the evening. Brothers & Sisters had a 7.2/12. Earlier in the night Extreme Makeover: Home Edition had a 7.1/11.
CBS had strength (not sure about football overrun on CBS last night) with 60 Minutes (8.1/14), but that was the best of the night for them. Amazing Race had a 5.9/9, Cold Case a 7.5/11 and The Unit a 6.1/10.
Meanwhile the Sunday night lineup on the CW which is programmed by MRC (Media Rights Capital) was so low it was hardly measurable. Valentine with an 0.8/1 was it’s best performer — and could be the only show of the night that cracked a million viewers. We’ll see when the fast affiliate results are available…

Metered Market Overnight Ratings: This is normally the first available ratings information, and is based on the electronic measurement service that Nielsen provides in 56 of the nation’s largest markets. In each market a sample of homes is selected to represent that individual market. Often, networks or syndicators provide metered market information as an early indicator of a program’s performance. In aggregate, the 56 metered markets represent 79,890,610 homes, or 70% of all U.S. TV households. Preliminary metered market data are available as early as 8:00AM (ET). Final metered market information, reflecting line-up changes, pre-emptions and runovers, are normally available by 3:30PM (ET).

It is good to see DH stabilized at 15.5-16 million viewers
There was no football overrun on CBS last night. Everything started on schedule
There was football overrun on CBS last night (at least, on the east coast). The CBS schedule was pushed back 20 minutes…
Huge rating for FOX overrun football. Does somebody know if there is football on november 23rd, the day of the 24 prequel ? It could be a huge lead-in and there is no Desperate this day.
There is football on 11/23 and Fox currently has two games in the 4:15pm slot — but I do not know if it’s a national doubleheader for them that will air everywhere, my guess is yes as one of the games involves the New York Giants (playing the same Cardinals that beat Dallas in overtime yesterday).
One thing that surprised me is just how much Fox has been pimping the 24 movie. It’s not even on for a month and a half and they are promoting the hell out of it. I recall seeing NO promotion for Terminator: TSCC, but the 24 movie on November 23 I saw many times…
24 is off the air since May 2007 ! FOX wants people to know that Jack Bauer is back. And last seasons, they promoted 24 since late october for a launch in January. Moreover, we all know that TSCC is dead, so it’s better to don’t lose time promoting it.
the nfl network that has the 4:15 games is always the doubleheader network.
Good point Dave, thanks. Mystery solved. If the Cardinals can push the Giants to overtime as they did with the Cowboys, “24 Redemption” will have a huge lead-in. At worst, it will have “The OT” as its lead-in.
I can’t remember if this question was answered last week, but will Sundays count in CW’s S-T-D ratings?
Julia, yep…
So next season they’ll just give Sundays back to the affiliates, I take it?
Who knows, maybe MRC will stick with it, or CW will offer them a bargain for Friday nights too!
Paltry as last night was (CW averaged 830,000 according to Berman) that’s only around a couple hundred thousand less than CW averaged last year at this time when it was programming the night itself — though as a percentage, that’s still a pretty steep drop.
I’d love to know how MRC financially modeled their Sunday nights. Did they assume the same performance as the CW last year? If so, they’re disappointed. But if they modeled a drop from CW’s results from last season, then they might OK with the results. Of course unless an insider wants to let us know, we will keep wondering, because everything they say publicly is all sunshine and roses
Hey yall i got a question…are the syndication ratings posted here on ths site aswell?

Robert Seidman, can I ask you if you saw any Prison Break promo?
Dexter, I do not recall seeing any prison break promos either. House, Fringe (lots of Fringe!) and 24 Redemption are the only ones I recall seeing….
I bet had Fox aired Animation Domination, it would have net better numbers than the playoffs.
Christian, in the demos that’s almost certainly true. Stewie > Manny. Very sad for MLB.
It’s really not news saying baseball isn’t the national pastime. Only the die hards ( like Costas )and old timers still say it is. Maybe those beat reporters also say it because they make their living following it for 7 months. Football caught up to Baseball in the 60’s with the Packers and slowly through the years the gap has widened. Anyone who deals with TV ratings knows thats a fact.
