Monday’s ‘SpongeBob’ draws 7.7 mil total viewers

The yellow and porous one has hit new heights.

THR.com is reporting:

Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants” had a big night Monday, drawing 7.7 million total viewers to a half-hour special at 8 p.m.

That made the “WhoBob WhatPants?” special the most-watched entertainment program of the night among total viewers – and second overall to ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” — and the No. 1 telecast on all of TV in the kids and tween demos. The special averaged 4.1 million kids 2-11, 2.7 million kids 6-11 and 2.3 million tweens 9-14.

Read the rest here.

While I know many of our readers bemoan the fact that the absorbent Bob often absorbs so many of the cable top 40 spots we see so that their favorite shows are pushed off our list, I, for one, appreciate him for the humbling reference point he provides for other cable programmers.

The next time you see that Mad Men drew 2 million viewers, or some other cable show touted as premiering to 1.8 million viewers, remember that we’ve seen weeks where seventeen different episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants exceeded 2 million viewers.

Feel free to sing along with me.

  1. Scot says:

I am 30 and watched w/ my daughter…where are my demo numbers?

  2. Bill Gorman says:

Scot, were you in a Nielsen family you’d definitely have been counted, but THR.com just neglected to include those numbers in their article.

And, sadly, we do not get age demographic information on individual cable shows from Nielsen.

  3. Fact Checker says:

It should be clarified that Nick’s claim that Monday’s SpongeBob special was “the most-watched entertainment program of the night among total viewers” should be qualified as “among cable programs only,” a fact the press release, whether intentional or not, failed to mention. The way it’s written indicates among all TV programs, which is false, as several programs beat the special, including every CBS program, also a Viacom network.

Just trying to keep everyone honest…

  4. Bill Gorman says:

Fact Checker, you are correct and I should have caught that, I’m the numbers guy after all.

I was too busy linking the theme song .mp3 ;)
