According to Nielsen IAG, an Dean asking Sam about the Apple iPod hooked up to a jack in their car in the September 18 episode of Supernatural was the most recalled product placement in a broadcast network scripted series for the period between September 15 and October 12.
Other TVbytheNumbers fan favorites Chuck and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles also made the top ten most recalled product placements list. Chuck at number six with the Crown Victoria episode on 9/29, and TSCC at number ten with the Dodge Ram pickup on 10/6.
This isn’t measuring total exposure of the product placement, rather the percentage of viewers who can recall the product placement within a 24 hour period. The iPod placement in Supernatural was recalled 2.3 times more than the average product placement. Even more than a month after it aired, I remembered the iPod scene in Supernatural.
You can see the full top ten list on the NielsenWire blog with an explanation of how the index is calculated.

But, but . . . you mean all the awesome clothes and high-end items on Gossip Girl weren’t on the list? No one recalled them? HA!
Chuck’s product placement for Madden ‘09 a couple of weeks ago was far more over the top! Not only were the stands in the background, but the whole Morgan Sub-Plot revolved around the game!
Angie, can’t really jump to that conclusion due to lack of data. We can only conclude that it wasn’t as recalled as much as any of the products in the top 10 which were recalled between 1.8 to 2.3 times average. It’s possible GG had some product placements that were much better than average that didn’t make the list, and it’s also possible that it didn’t
Tyler, I agree with you, and I loved Strahan in that episode. Buy More is pretty much product placement for Best Buy as it is, but that’s another story…
The ipod in the Impala was a very clever product placement. Because Sam would put one there and Dean would throw it out — LOL!!!
I wasn’t even thinking about it as a product placement.
The Madden game on Chuck wasn’t over the top — Stride Gum on Smallville last season was over the top.
Yeah, I guess there’s no such thing as “bad” publicity, but the iPod scene in Supernatural was more an “anti-commerical” than anything since the point of the scene was that Dean saw Sam as being lame for putting an iPod in his Impala.
There was an article out a while back, I can’t even remember where I read it, where they interviewed Best Buy employees about the similarities to the Buy More. It was pretty funny.
And on the subject of Chuck, while I doubt the writers or the fans would go for it, I have to wonder how many fast food, ice cream, and coffee house establishments have contacted NBC to be the next location for Sarah Walker’s cover job?
