Monday Ratings: Dancing With the Stars Beats Rainy World Series

Additional ratings data about Wednesday night’s game five of the World Series from Fox is available here.

First a HUGE disclaimer. ALL the numbers listed here for FOX are almost assuredly wrong, and when I get the better data from Fox, I will try to update with all the correct data (and not just the 8pm-10pm piece). Please also note that last night’s World Series game was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the sixth inning with the game tied 2-2. Weather permitting, the game will resume tonight (8:30pm-ish) where it left off in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Philadelphia Phillies batting and the Tampa Bay Rays trying to claw their way back to Tampa. This means the regularly scheduled airing of House and Fringe will not air tonight. Update (9:44am PDT): “Mikey” in the comments says the game will not be resumed tonight and an announcement is coming shortly. I have reasons to trust his sources and will update when I see the announcement….

Update 2: 10:01am. I have updated the Fox numbers in the table above to represent the full, time-adjusted programming from 8:00pm-10:47pm. I did not have share numbers for the demos via those updates. But with that update, Fox ties for the 18-49 demo and wins the 18-34 demo.

Update 3, 10:25am PDT: MLB.com reports that Game 5 will, weather allowing, resume Wednesday night at 8:37pm EDT. House fans rejoice! Fringe fans, the regularly scheduled episode was already going to be a rerun…

Ok, lots of blah blah disclaiming. Another Monday of mixed leadership with ABC having the most viewers on the backs (or heels, as it were) of Dancing With the Stars, and because CBS was in repeats, ABC also had the best 18-49 demographic numbers. Depending on what the real numbers for Fox look like, NBC may have narrowly won the 18-34 demographic (largely on the strength of a waning Heroes still dominating among 18-34 year olds).

CBS, up against the World Series opted for a night of reruns. I am not sure what CBS can really make of a rerun of Gary Unmarried airing in Worst Week’s slot. But CBS can make out of it at least this: “Damn, our Monday night reruns performed well.” Relative to the other shows, Gary Unmarried performed similarly to Worst Week. Last Week Worst Week had the worst 18-49 and 18-34 demo numbers of the night, and this week Gary Unmarried did. It seems that unless they move Old Christine back to that spot, or wait for Rules of Engagement to run there, that slot is the week link. As it was, Samantha Who? barely beat the Gary Unmarried rerun in the 18-49 demo even facing a repeat. With new episodes, Worst Week had been winning the demo vs. Samantha.

NBC programming “guru” Ben Silverman may see himself as a rock star, but so far under his tenure (he took the post in the spring of 2007) his shows aren’t doing so well. He must be greatly disappointed in the numbers for My Own Worst Enemy and I’d guess he’s trying to figure out how to give it another shot before scrapping it completely. The best performing show Silverman’s added to the lineup since taking over programming seems to be Chuck. Yes, that Chuck. I love Chuck, but you can see the numbers. They aren’t as bad as My Own Worst Enemy’s numbers, but they are not exactly rock starish.

The CW again claimed Monday night victory with young women. Additional details besides those below for Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill are available here via The CW.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. JJ says:

Samantha Who just doesn’t seem to be holding up well behind Dancing with the Stars. What happens when that lead in goes away?

  2. Susan says:

Shame about My Own Worst Enemy. It would have been a sure hit…. if it weren’t on NBC!

  3. Mikey says:

Conclusion of World Series Game 5 will NOT be tonight. Announcement coming shortly. Try again tomorrow.

  4. Thanks Mikey — I updated the post.

@Susan, in my hurry to get something up, I neglected to add any commentary on the disappointing MOWE numbers. I’ll rectify that now.

  5. Dan says:

When the Dancing with the Stars lead in goes away then ratings for Samantha Who? will lower probably to around 7-9 million. But ABC will not cancel it anytime soon. Samantha Who will be around for a long time just due to the fact that ABC has no other comedies. It seems that Gary Unmarried did OK in the slot. The reairing of the pilot did better than when the Pilot aired the first time and the show may actually do better when it goes back to wednesday.

  6. Toony says:

Sorry to be a pain, but NBC’s Average Viewer figures looks way to high

  7. Mel, November Sweeps this year start in October according to Nielsen. They run from October 30 through November 26 (Thanksgiving eve).

  8. Toony, putting speed first is sometimes a problem for me, I apologize. All of the numbers are right, but the labels are all screwed up. I will fix it now..sorry about that, and please don’t ever feel like a pain for telling us we screwed up — especially when we actually screwed up!

  9. JT says:

No lead out shows ever hold the unexplicably large audience that “Dancing With the Has-Beens” generates. I think ABC should stick with “Samantha Who?” because it generates over 11 million viewers and the percentage of 18-49 year olds is a little higher than its lead in. With so many shows on the decline, I think that Samantha should be considered a solid performer.

  10. chinafan says:

My Own Worst Enemy demo is better than Boston Legal, if MOWE is on CBS or ABC, it will be a hit. NBC will take care of it too.

  11. Christian says:

Yeah here in L.A., they’re still running ads for House and Fringe tonight.

  12. Chinafan, comparing to BL is probably not meaningful since its already planned to end after this season’s 13 episode run. NBC will take care of it? The numbers have gone down with each airing since the premiere. How do you think NBC will take care of it? What better show does it have demo wise that can lead into it?

  13. Holly says:

When Samantha Who? lost its DWTS lead-in last year, it dropped to 6-7 million viewers. Since this year is down from last year, I would expect 5-6 million.

By the Way, Samantha Who? is NOT getting over 11 million viewers right now. These numbers include 2 minutes of DWTS. Once that is taken out in the final numbers it will probably be around 10 million.

  14. Bill Gorman says:

chinafan, Boston Legal is a dead show airing. It was brought back for one final year, even with bad numbers, reportedly as a bone to David E. Kelley as part of the deal for Life on Mars.

  15. R.G. says:

It’s puzzling – maybe “CIRCUS WITH THE (PRETEND) STARS” is like a major car wreck on an interstate; It appears to be Horrifying, but you can’t take your eyes off this tragedy…but what’s more puzzling is more people tune in as the hours go on?!!?

  16. Steve says:

Loving that Gossip Girl keeps dipping in the viewers. I didn’t think Supernatural would beat it in viewers last week but it did. I feel strongly that it can this week too.

  17. Angie says:

Gossip Girl seems to have shed its viewers and is heading back towards last year’s ratings. *sigh* The CW is such a disappointing network.

  18. Johnny Shoe says:

Robert, just got word via text msg from mlb.com that Game 5 Of the World Series will be WED night. So House will be new tonight on FOX.

  19. Doug says:

Um, was CSI Miami a repeat? Because if it wasn’t, that number is BY FAR a series low.

  20. Steve says:

“The CW is such a disappointing network.”

They have that one night where they do well. :)

  21. Doug, yes, all CBS shows last night were repeats, I’ve updated the table. I’ve also updated the post re: Game 5 being scheduled to resume Wednesday night.

  22. Angie — there is a difference between the aggregate 18-34 and Women 18-34. Based on the data I saw (from a source that wasn’t the CW) they aren’t lying. GG and DWTS tied among *women* 18-34 for the 8:00-8:30 half hour, and CW (narrowly) won the 8:30p-9p half hour in that demo.

  23. Vader says:

MOWE did win the 18-34 demo, let’s think positively here.

  24. the128boy says:

Gary Unmarrieds % retention rate out of 2.5 Men was significantly higher than Worst Week ever had. With rules waiting in the wings, i think Worst Weeks days are numbered.

MOWE is a huge disappointment for NBC. They have lost their footing on the Monday battleground (which was one of the last nights they had ok footing on). I think the numbers will rebound once baseball is out of the way, but not by much. Also, i realize why they launched MOWE in this timeslot, but it’s not a good fit out of heroes (not that anything else they have would be particularly good). It actually would have been good inbetween the new wednesday lineup with Knight Rider at 8, Enemy at 9, and L&O at 10. But that leaves Life stuck in no-man’s land, and another big question mark as to what-in-the-world-do-we-put-behind-heroes. I think one of NBC’s biggest problems is that they are despereately trying to find something that can take advantage of the heroes lead-in, and in the process have tried to force it too much, and probably hurt some shows that could have done decently somewhere else on their schedule.

  25. Vader, fair point, but… Last week when MOWE went up against a new CSI: Miami, it was second (2.2 vs. 2.6), so it actually went down slightly up against the rerun. Probably not really good news, but still a fair point!

  26. byeu says:

I hope that NBC will give MOWE one last big push before they can it.

  27. FrankJ says:

Well luckily for Chuck, Heroes and MOWE aren’t doing the best, so I hope the numbers are passable. I would really feel a lot better about Chuck’s chances at another season though if the viewership could at least creep up a bit. I’m very encouraged by the quality of the episodes so far this season, so I’m hoping the story arc for sweeps just knocks it out of the park.

  28. FrankJ says:

Ouch…something I just noticed, on top of no Terminator episode to put a drag on it, Chuck got those numbers being up against repeats. CBS is just killing with those comedies. That’s discouraging.

  29. hookedonmick says:

Holly, am I reading this right…..World series had more overall viewers, but TBBt had higher demo, which according to advertisers and networks is better? So CBS could say that they won the time slot? I am surprised that Dancing does better than Two and Half Men.

  30. Julia says:

Well, CBS can claim they came in second. ;)

  31. Hooked, not really because you are comparing a.) somewhat bad data, and b.) half hourly data to hourly data. It’s convoluted to break out the half hour data for Fox because they had two segments (8p-8:27p, pregame) and 8:27-8:30 (game). Adjusted for time zones, TBBT beat the World Series pregame in total viewers, too, even the 3 minutes. But the 8:30-9pm portion actually had 10.39 million, unfortunately updating tables with half hourly data isn’t my thing, but CBS beat Fox in the 8:00-8:30 slot regardless (but didn’t win, DWTS did).

  32. Foo Man Chu says:

HEROES downt to only 8 million viewers? Only its key 18-49 demo is keeping it alive. But if that sinks below 3.0 – it might get the axe or if it does get another season will require large budget cuts. Jericho had 8 million when it got the axe the first time (though its key demo was in the mid 2’s back then, if I recall correctly) The bloom is off the rose with HEROES; its no longer the must see hip show it used to be. Its going the way of its predecessor, THE 4400.

Oh well, at least LOST is guaranteed to finish its story arc with a planned 2010 ending.

  33. Julia says:

Foo Man Chu, at this point Heroes is no where near cancellation. It doesn’t have very much competition amongst NBC shows, so they would nearly have to cancel their whole line up and start again to justify dumping Heroes.

  34. Yeah, only The Office has a better chance at renewal than Heroes. At these levels there’s no chance Heroes gets canceled.

But, the bloom is definitely off the rose…

  35. JT says:

I expect “Heroes” to last another season and that will be it. I’m one of the loyal fans who defected this season, as it just became too muddled and confusing, and I got tired of Hiro playing the bumbling clown part every week. It’s too bad because it really was a great show in its first season.

  36. Ben says:

Last night Gossip Girl epi was so much fun!
Besides there were a bit of THE OC (Mini Cooper), a bit of Charmed (How soon is now theme) and a bitCH of Jenny (i hate her)
    xD

    xxx
    Ben

  37. Mr. Manly Man says:

I watch Dancing with the Stars.

The only reason to watch Dancing with the Stars is because of that hot body of Brooke Burke.

    OMG!!!!!

  38. Josie says:

It seems like the ONLY numbers Heroes has is 18-34. Still it’s about NBC’s only cash cow. If the numbers keep on hemorrhaging like they are I see a tighter belt on Kring and crew’s budget for next season. Not to mention less promotion. Heroes: the next ER, L&O, and all the other “That’s still on?” programming at the peacock. The bloom is way off the rose and firmly on 60 Rock and The Office. Where it rightfully belongs.

  39. tom says:

i don’t watch heroes but it’s amazing how quickly it has dropped.

you remember when people used to just watch a show and be more loyal and not bail so quickly? maybe it’s because everyone takes it so seriously now than they used to.

i’m always reading that when someone sees a (what they perceive to be) a bad episode of housewives, heroes, lost… etc… they want to stop watching. very fickle.

when there are a few weak episodes of gg, there will be an army of discontented fans looking to jump ship.

  40. Schmokey says:

Robert, do you think NBC will try and do something with Enemy before they kill it? I know this sounds crazy, but I really like it. Haven’t watched last night’s show yet, but the first first episode was pretty good, and the second was very good. Think I posted this elsewhere, but you could have knocked me over with a pin after that second episode, considering how scathing all the reviews were. I mean, at least it is entertaining, which I can only say about one other show on television at this point (Big Bang).

Although the latest episode of Life gave me hope that it could get back on track, assumming it doesn’t get cancelled either.

I don’t know, just hoping that 2.something demo will keep MOWE alive.

  41. Schmokey, purely speculative, but yes, I do think NBC will try to do something before scrapping it altogether. What that something is, I have no idea, and I am thinking something other than shipping it to the Friday night ghetto to let it run out 13 episodes. again, purely speculative and I have no idea what the “what” might be.

  42. Julia says:

NBC has four dramas on deck for midseason, as well as an obscene amount of reality shows. While I doubt they’ll be canceling MOWE too quickly, I’m not sure they’ll really bother trying it out elsewhere, when they have plenty to fill its spot with.

  43. Johnthemon says:

I think Chuck has hope to go up. This week instead of Terminator it was up against the world series. Sure, it was really low for a world series game, but still way stronger than Terminator.

  44. Erica says:

    YaY! for OTH!!!

  45. Kyle C says:

When looking at the key demographics, My Own Worst Enemy is performing on par w/ the 18-49 yr olds, & above average w/ the 18 – 34 yr olds for the time slot. Which is pretty good when compared to total viewers. Of course the Heroes retention is pretty bleak.

  46. Holly says:

Kyle C, keep in mind that CSI: Miami was a repeat last night. Last week it had a 3.8 in the 18-49 and a 2.8 in the 18-34.

  47. Matt says:

DWTS was so incredibly entertaining last night. We enjoyed every minute of it. From the Viennese Waltz to the Hip-Hop battle it has been one of the most competitive, uplifting, and fun filled seasons I’ve had the priviledge of watching. I know it is going to be sad for millions of fans when and if Cloris Leachman gets voted off tonight.

  48. Sam says:

It seems like the only timeslot they can move MOWE to is Friday and ship LJ back to the fiery depths. I’m glad to see Life getting a… well… lifeline as it were, given that starting the season against CSI Miami to try to build an audience after such a long hiatus was a pretty boneheaded move. MOWE might be able to steal some viewers on fridays, despite it being a young viewer wasteland.

I know BL has bad demos and is a terrible lead out to… pretty much everything, except for being good at shedding the young viewers and retaining all the old. I’m sure the cost of the show is high given the cast but it would have seemed like a good Friday night show considering it gets fairly decent overall viewers and it’s not going to pull young viewers anyway. BL with 20/20… a metamucil dream night.

  49. Anthony says:

Is Chuck up or down from last week?

  50. Anthony says:

Damn. Chucks gonna get cancelled isnt it.

  51. check out our renew or cancel index. Right now, NBC is faring so poorly overall, Chuck looks like it will be renewed (the numbers don’t include last night’s data, but, the 18-49 numbers looked about the same as a week ago last night):

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/2008/10/28/dirty-sexy-money-eli-stone-risk-being-cancelled/7063

  52. Anthony says:

Where have all the viewers gone? It was pulling in double digits last year

  53. i’m not sure what you’re talking about. The numbers in the Renew or Cancel Index are only the 18-49 year old demographic season averages (not total viewers)

  54. Anthony says:

I mean total viewers. Last year Chuck pullled in double in total viewers

  55. the renew or cancel index is derived from 18-49 numbers since it’s our belief that is what generally drives the renew or cancel decisions (except in the case of the CW).

  56. Anthony says:

Ah. So Chuck seems likely for renewal? Along with Heroes obviously.

  57. Terence says:

Heroes in my opinion is one of the reasons I still watch NBC(aside from L&O:SVU and the original L&O and Chuck. There just doesn’t seem to be a reason to check out NBC. I love Heroes and will stick with this show. I can’t be a fairweather fan and this season is picking up the pace rapidly and getting rid of some of the flaws that didn’t get fully realised in season 2. Chuck is postioned great as a starter show on Monday. Can’t wait for NBC to reclaim the throne

    T

  58. patty says:

What happened to the new show worst week on Monday nights? It’s a horrible show but this Monday it was not on.

  59. Noah says:

Way to go for Chuck :D
But watch what happens next week when Chuck is gone and TSCC is on; I’ll bet Terminator will have better numbers than it’s been getting- just like Chuck did tonight :O

  60. Patty, CBS aired all repeats Monday night and rather than a repeat of Worst Week it ran a repeat of Gary Unmarried.

  61. patty says:

Thanks Rob for the info that means that show WW is still on the air eekk,LoL.

  62. Anthony says:

It makes me wonder you know if network suits will give some of the shows a little slack this year due to the stop/start routine thats been happening.

  63. STYLE says:

    The bloom is off Heroes?
    Are you serious?
The bloom has been off Heroes since season 2, because of a lawsuit filed against NBC and tim kring, And most intelligent people in the tv and film industry already understand that fact.

Jeff Zucker is a moron, and he should have contacted those two NYC artists that tim kring stole that work from 2 seasons ago.
It’s the only way to save this lame show.
Go back to the original creators, those artists work were dynamic.

It’s really too bad that the public may never see those original story lines, because of the lawsuit.
Those story lines went to number one in season one and drew millions of viewers worldwide,
and we have The Twins and their incredible art to thank for that.
“The Twins”, are in schools and colleges everyday in NYC teaching young students what it means to be” ordinary people with extraordinary abilities”, that can paint the future on canvas before it happens.
NYC heard all about The Twins art and how NBC stole it a few days ago on the radio.
The Twins are able to send students that they teach to the Met museum in NYC to show why their artistic ability is possible, it’s called LUBA DIVINATION ART and this LUBA ART is the foundation for tim’s storyline of the African artist that can paint the future.
And please keep it mind, that while he’s being sued in an Appellate court by an African Luba artist that can paint the future, tim kring introduces the storyline of an African artist that can paint the future in season3.
    Is this smart or retarded?

From the latino Isaac Mendez to the African Usutu, what’s next? The Irish artist that can paint the future? why kill off Isaac, just to bring the same power back in a black man in season 3?
The real life actor Santiago Cabrerra and his agent must be livid.

Heroes doesn’t work because it’s borrowed, stolen and hacked up material from other original artist copyrighted original works.( The Twins, The Watchmen, X-men, etc…)
tim kring and his so-called writing crew are no different from car theft rings.
If tim kring wasn’t white, he’d already be in jail.

  64. Memo From The Movement says:

    Note to all Heroes fans:
The NYC Appellate court dates for the lawsuit against NBC and Tim Kring will be posted on this site and through out the internet shortly.
NBC, Tim Kring and The Twins will appear at these court dates, according to the info from the NYC radio show.
The NYC court dates are open to the public and all media.
For all fans that are flying in we suggest you book your airfare and hotel dates early .
No cameras will be allowed and we’re told that all cell phones must be turned off inside the court room.
You will also be searched by the NYPD before you enter the court room.
“The Movement To Put Tim Kring In Jail” ask all Heroes fans to respect the courts and any NYPD officers that may be present.
There will be no violence allowed or tolerated.
Please do not talk once you’ve entered the court room, only the judges, plaintiffs, defendants and their lawyers are allowed to speak.
We ask that you support this “Movement To Put Tim Kring In Jail” with intelligence, truth and respect.
The Twins are positive, humble people and they deserve no less.

  65. Chris the TV sage says:

…I suddenly miss the Moonlight fans.

  66. Bill Gorman says:

    Chris, They’ll be back.

  67. Fin says:

STYLE: most things in the world have already be done twice over. Heroes in my mind is a extradionary show and much more superior than X-men; which seemed to have similar stories but when you at it Heroes in my mind is much more… intelligent in the plotlines. Sad that its waning in the ratings; i wish people would keep watching; it deserves so much more than a shit and cheesy (same basic crap joke after another) show like Two and a half men. Seems like theres no hope for NBC; god i hate CBS. It feels like all they have are crime drams and cheesy comedies.
Chuck i think was going to get these ratings from the final ratings from season one; i think it will be axed. The writers strike in some way may have given less episodes for plotlines but it also gave less episodes to fall in the ratings. (therefore give a lower average).

  68. Max452 says:

The writers strike hurt a lot of shows. Heroes numbers during season 2 were good if I remember, even though I thought season 2 was not as good as season 1. Season 3 is far better than season 2. I enjoy watching Heroes, and if you surf tv land, there are so many shows that worse.
