ABC Orders Seven More Episodes of Samantha Who?

Posted on 31 October 2008 by Bill Gorman

According to Variety, ABC has ordered 7 more episodes of the sophomore comedy Samantha Who?. While nine would have been typical to make a full season, Variety cited:

[ABC's] deep midseason bench – half-hours set to bow include “Scrubs,” “The Goode Family,” “Better Off Ted,” “Single with Parents” and “According to Jim,” which returns to the sked Tuesday, Dec. 2 – in shortening “Samantha’s” full-season order.

That comes as no surprise to the watchers of our Renew / Cancel Index where Samantha is in the range for 2009-10 renewal, so a full season pick-up this year seemed to be assured.

Although in its most recent airing last Monday, Samantha Who? only beat a *rerun* of Gary Unmarried by a whisker in the 18-49 demo, ABC has plenty of other problems on its hands with the 2008-9 sophomore class to worry about something that minor. That same deep midseason bench will likely allow ABC to cancel its bad performers like Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone.

Besides Scrubs, none of those shows interest me in the slightest. I’ve never been a big fan of ABC.

Does anyone actually find According to Jim entertaining?

No, ATJ is not remotely funny. They should bring back TGIF and stick all their unfunny shows on a friday like they used to. And give us something better to watch during the week.

  3. Alde says:

Like always, they will cancel very good stuff and replace them with something very stupid.

  4. tle041 says:

Totally agree moonlightfan, they should stick all these sitcoms in TGIF where the ratings will reflect the quality of the shows.

Scrubs is the exception. That show I could actually stand.

Every year since it has been on the air I keep thinking that the final season of According To Jim is upon us and yet it manages to get a renewal. Maybe this year it actually turns into a funny sitcom. (LOL- Right!) Meanwhile, actually funny sitcoms over the period, My Wife and Kids, and George Lopez, are axed. Still, ABC has worked magic before with dead shows. I remember several years ago believing that The Bachelor was ready for the trash heap, then they managed to transform it into a stand alone hit. This summer it brought in big numbers and according to its fans has helped to make the upcoming season one of its most highly anticipated seasons.
With its other marginal shows I would say that Eli Stone is in the most trouble. The other two are showing signs of life, but really all three need to pick up the pace.

We love Samantha Who! It is one of the best shows ABC has in its line-up. I can’t stand when ABC keeps changing the date of the next new episode. This is the second week in a row, they changed it!
