NBC Picks Up Kath & Kim for Full Season, No Surprise

Posted on 31 October 2008 by Robert Seidman

to quote James Hibbered:

Yup, you read that right.

NBC has ordered a full season of Thursday night comedy “Kath & Kim.”

Guess last night’s fourth episode rising 9% helped boost NBC’s confidence in the show. The UMS/Reveille-produced comedy was seen by 5.4 million viewers and received a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49, matching its “My Name Is Earl” lead in. But that’s after the first three episodes dropped each week.

Sign of the times? To some degree it’s a sign of how bad things are for NBC this fall, because even with Sunday Night Football, it’s still the number four network among 18-49 year olds. And even before last night’s up-tick, Kath & Kim fared well versus the peacock’s season-to-date 18-49 year old viewer average in our Renew/Cancel Index, where Kath & Kim is currently actually pegged for renewal next year.

It’s at the low end of renewal, but NBC’s index is skewed because of Sunday Night Football (which of course performs better than any show on the net). NBC winds up having a few shows worse than average, a bunch of shows right around average and a few shows that are way, way above average (Heroes, The Office and of course, Sunday Night Football).

Kath & Kim is right around average — just a tiny bit below through last week’s numbers, but excluding Sunday Night Football, it would actually be outperforming NBC’s season-to-date average for 18-49 year old viewers. That’s good enough for most networks really. And particularly in this case, as NBC execs are apparently very enamored with the show, where despite the low total viewer numbers, it’s performing (relative to the rest of NBC) OK when it comes to 18-49 year old viewers.

Plus, NBC has some history with The Office where it didn’t really catch on until the second season. And plus, if they replaced it, they’d just have to replace it with another 30 minute show (given the current schedule) that likely wouldn’t do any better. So while I do sometimes mock the low total viewer numbers, I’m not surprised at all.

Ok someone please slap me. I need it.
NBC ordered more of Kath & Kim, the show that almost gets less viewers than PD. Just because it raised 9%.
I will be LOVING to say this: WAKEEEEE UP ABC, PD raised 16% THIS WEEK.
Now Im almost positive that ABC will renew.?

  2. No, not just because it raised 9%, because even before that it was performing OK against NBC’s season-to-date 18-49 average. ABC has a higher 18-49 average than NBC which doesn’t help Pushing Daisies’ case, but even on a head-to-head basis Kath & Kim was averaging 900,000 more 18-49 year old viewers than Pushing Daisies.

  3. shea says:

Ok now all we need is Pushing Daisies picked up for the full season then all my shows that are in danger will be good…until may…

  4. Nick C says:

Shea, PD while not canceled, is done. ABC officially requested the 13th episode be rewritten as a finale vs the Cliffhanger it was originally. They don’t do that if they are thinking “we might pick them up.”

  5. Matt says:

When your main goal is just to keep your head above rising waters, a five million viewer avg. for Kath and Kim on NBC is enough, but when you’re one of the networks actually in the battle for number one(ABC and CBS), ten million is the standard. Pushing Daises is an outstanding series and definitely the most original program to come along in a while. That can’t be taken away from it even if it does go to the cancellation heap.

  6. DaisiesDeathKnell says:

Again, this renewal isn’t remotely shocking. Kath & Kim is doing virtually the same as MNIE, so it’s a situation where you’d either pull both from the schedule or renew Kim. If I were at NBC, I’d have done the exact same move. These numbers are also good enough for renewal NEXT year but we’ll have to see what happens because

    1) Kath & Kim is a new show and could taper off very fast.

    2) My Name Is Earl has been losing viewers at a tremendous rate since the first season, and especially, since the start of the third season. All it would take is Earl dropping 10-15% in the 18-49 demographic and both shows would suddenly be treading water.

  7. CW_Chick says:

This comes as no surprise to me. I agree with ‘DaisiesDeathKnell’, if I were NBC I would have done the same move. Not sure it would be renewed next year as well, but for this year at least.

The numbers are not amazing, yet it has fit itself in a Thursday night comedy black and managed to fit in almost the same numbers as its lead in. It actually beat MNIE in the 18-34 demos.

  8. Don says:

Hey it looks like 30 Rock might be pulling the same numbers as the The Office. Will that also translate into more emmy wins???

  9. Doghouse Reilly says:

Hurrah! I may be the only person who will admit to enjoying Kath & Kim, but I do, so this is good news for me.

  10. DaisiesDeathKnell says:

Don, 30 Rock is a lock for the Best Comedy Emmy this next time around. Television comedy is represented almost entirely by shows that are past their prime with 30 Rock being the only arguable case for either consistency or improvement. The Office, Sunny In Philadelphia, Entourage, Simpsons, South Park, Curb, etc. are all well past their prime. 30 Rock will continue to nab awards until a quality new comedy is launched.

  11. Steinmiller says:

Kath & Kim is dreadful, NBC really is desperate if their keeping that on the air. PD definitely deserves a full pickup – this season has been great.

  12. Scott says:

“Will that also translate into more emmy wins???”

Getting greedy? 17 nominations and 7 wins isn’t something to complain about.

  13. I hate Kath and Kim says:

    PLEASE CANCEL THIS CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Billy says:

Kath & Kim is the funniest show on TV.

  15. Stefanie says:

You guys are crazy, Kath and Kim is hilarious! I love it. Am I really the only one?

  16. CPuv says:

Kath and Kim started off badly, but the more recent episodes have been funny. The show is hitting its stride, albeit late in the game. It was a smart move to renew for another season.

  17. just FYI, it didn’t renew it for another season, but it did get a full-season pickup for this season.

  18. Kath&KimFAN!!!! says:

I love Kath and Kim its awesome I’m a 20 year old woman and I watch it every week with my 17 year old brother who is straight by the way- we’re always fighting over what to watch but we always agree to watch the Thursday night lineup on NBC :p so ya its a great show for everyone! Plus its the perfect pick me up in a hectic week!! PLEASE don’t cancel it!!!!

  19. the128boy says:

Kath&KimFan, your show has most likely aired it last episode, as all signs point to cancellation. That being said, I’m sure you will be able to relive the show on dvd sometime later this year.

  20. sydney says:

I must admit, at first I couldn’t stand Kath and Kim but after watching more episodes it began to be really funny. It’s almost like an extremely exagerratered take on Legally Blonde. Both the mother and daughter are so out of their mind, it’s just crazy that you actually believe that there are people like that in this world. (Does every show that comes out have to be so serious and the same as every other sitcom) (THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX FOR ONCE)
Plus, look at Baywatch, talk about the most pathetic show ever created and look how many years it was on the air. The men that couldn’t afford a PLAYBOY mag. kept that show going.
