Long Term Trend of O’Reilly vs. Olbermann TV Ratings:
Some folks commented that they thought the previous linear regressions weren’t the right way to look at the long term trend, and I agree. We have data since late November, 2007 and using that as a “start” point for a linear trend was somewhat arbitrary. The trend lines above are 20 day (4 week) moving averages. I’m not sure I’ll stick with that period, it might be too short, but that’s what I’m going with this week.

Also what happened on Wednesday? Olberman gets better ratings than Obama and almost catches up to Billo? So did people who watched Obama on other channels switch to Olbermann for the recap? I think its also interesting to note that the OReilly sycophants won’t change the channel for ANYTHING! I’d call these the Republican dead-enders but I’d sound too much like Rumsfeld.

O’Reilly definitely has a skew in terms of older viewers, but he usually beats (albeit, narrowly) Olbermann in the 25-54 cable demo. And given that Fox re-upped him with a huge salary, I’d say Fox is pleased with his performance.
Over the next four years, expect Fox to move to the left. Obama led the boycott of Fox during the Democrat primaries and there is demonstrable evidence that it hurt Fox’s ratings during the primary season. Fox simply wasn’t able to provide the same quality of coverage to the Democratic primaries because the only Democrats they could attract to their network were washed up “strategists” from the Carter or Mondale era.
The Obama campaign hasn’t been shy about the use of boycotts to punish the small minority of news organizations that don’t fawn over him. Fox knows this, and with Democrats in power, it’s going to need access to Democrats in order to meaningfully cover the news. Their ratings will dwindle if their evening broadcast is just Karl Rove, Dick Morris, and a few random Republican senators and congressmen whining about what law Obama just passed or what industry Obama just nationalized.
Outlander, actually Edwards led the boycott. Obama only agreed after Edwards and Hillary boycotted I believe.
Whomever did it, Obama is now smacking Fox around regularly. It’s a beautiful thing.
Shaun, perhaps so, but the truth is that Fox is the only major news organization in the country that’s been even remotely critical of Obama. It bothers me that several media insiders have all but admitted that the media has not vetted Obama, doesn’t want to, and doesn’t see anything wrong with that.

Obermann and MSNBC is a joke. The left controls that channel completely. If you want political balance you can go to fox and sometimes CNN. If fox were to move left then that will leave half the country with no where to go for balanced coverage. They will not do that.
MSNBC will be washed up after the political season is complete and you will see the FOX dominance widen. MSNBC will not have anyone to bash when the dems mess things up worse than the repubs have done this past 8 years.

Hillary never boycotted Fox News. She has even stated that she believes Fox News is the only “fair and Balanced” news channel on TV.

If you want to talk about fairness you should look at the Pew Research study on media fairness in this campaign. Fox had 40% negative coverage of Obama AND McCain. And actually had more positive coverage of Obama than McCain.
They are just fair, and CNN is fair much of the time too. I dont know why it twists your panties so much when a network covers something with fairness…

The only way Olbermann will stay on this trend is if Obama actually loses, which he wont. People watch Olbermann because he bashes repubs and bush. You don’t watch for the “news” of the day. Olbermann will eventually turn into the lefts sean hannity…a propaganda arm for his party. The only reason fox does so well, is that its the only repub friendly channel. There will be countless sources to get the type of “news” you’ll get from Olbermann come next year. Olbermann’s famously fake anger will not have enough repubs to focus on, so his shtick will really fall by the wayside. Seriously..people, admit you don’t watch olbermann because he gushes over Obama(which he does so well). You watch because he attacks repubs and bill o’reilly like no one else. It really is as simple as that.
Matt, excellent analysis. Olbermann would okay if he had on guests who actually disagreed with him, that would make his show somewhat entertaining. While O’Reilly talks over most of his guests, he at least puts them on his show. He get’s points for that. After Obama is elected to go along with Pelosi and Reid, people will get real tired of Olbermann acting like every Republican is picking on Obama.
If Obama goes far left with Pelosi, it will be a blood bath for House Democrats in 2010 like it has been for Republicans since 2006.
Olbermann’s ratings are up because of the election period. His viewers are Johnny Come Lately viewers, meaning that once the election is done, his viewers will stop caring….
Also, as to someone saying that Obama will pull the plug…..would you really want GOVERNMENT stepping in and telling you what you can and can not watch.

If Obama becomes President I agree that he will try and pull the plug on Fox because the liberals can’t stand to see their lies exposed. They only believe the First Amendment applies to them.
I do think its funny that some of you nuts think a president can shut down a news channel. But even with the fairness doctrine, it would be shows LIKE olbermann that would HAVE to change. He would start having to allow repubs on to counter his rantings. He would never last with that kind of show…olberman has proven he doesn’t have the testicular fortitude to debate policy and issues. Guys like O’Reilly and Hannity do dominate their shows and get loud when they dissagree, but bill puts on libs and hannity has colmes. Those two shows would actually fit perfectly into the fairness doctrine. All you countdown fans really should be careful what you wish for.

Sorry to disagree, but I believe the fairness doctrine is only intended to address “fairness” for radio. Cable and broadcast would be exempt. Liberals are looking to maintain there “fairness” in tv, and close down the radio gap.

The 250K is a red herring spouted by BOs campaign. If you pay taxes now, your taxes will go up. If you dont pay taxes now, and your situation does not change, you will be getting money. Period.
If you make under 250k, and you have a 401k, the Dems want to tax that. To me and my wife who make way under 250k, and put 30k each year in our 401k, will pay 1000 a month more in taxes. You say if the dems pass it, good ole BO wont pass it. Wrong. He has gone along with the dems position 94% of the time. I figure I have a 6% chance of seeing a veto on this. Not good odds.
What is next? Home mortgage deduction. This tax policy has always favored the rich, as they are subsidized the most by the fed government. Just to clearify privitizing SS in any form even in a great economy is a bad idea. the problem with SS isnt its planning the fact the baby Boomers (not there fault they have great numbers) were putting in alot of money. now they go to draw it out and guess what not as many ppl were born to help support them. sad fact, but a true one. the idea behind putting it in the stock market was to increase revenue to support these greater number of people who put into the program. 2.) Based on the above expect most of our enemies crippled by economic might rather than wars. Russia, Saudi, Iran, Iraq, Venuzuala … all our enemies are nothing but broken economies without Petro Dollars!!
3.) Surpluses to pay down debt. Something the Rethugs are so irresponsible about!
700 Billion saves from importing fuel + 400B saved from needless wars. Current deficits around 400B (taking out one time exp) … so suplus of 700B each year!
4.) Join the league of civilized countries by having true universal healthcare.
5.) Gain back the respect of the world! Where we are taken seriously. Our words have greater weight than our swords. The dream America like under President Clinton.

20-30 years ago the Dems controlled the house and Senate, 2/3′rds of the power in this country. Alternative Fuels would be awesome, Im a firm Beliver in them I drive a Diesel and diesels can Burn plenty of alternative fuels. we just need to get the industry going. i expect to see many changes comming in 10-15years this is just from private corporations. Drix … Alterative fuels do need a govt push and initial subsidy. You may agree or not agree fundamentally with that belief of govt help but if you are a believer in the principle that we should wean off middle east old then you have to get used to govt being involved in the process there. Let me explain why … in the 70’s when we had an oil shock that is first when research began in alternative fuels. We developed techniques to extract crude from coal, ethanol was developed then, experimentation began on Cellulose ethanol, hydrogen fuel tech was perfected. Then the oil prices tumbled. Economies of scale were NOT developed on alternative fuels … they cost 2X to 3X of what the new oil price were. Since the govt was not involved the private sector killed all alternative fuel ventures. Guess what happened we went back to oil addiction and sent our enemies in middle east 700 billion a year … propped their economies. Guess that was ultimately even caused 9/11.
Now oil is currently at 67 a barrel. Some oil man have recently predicted we could see 20 a barrel in 6-8 months. With gas back to $1 a gallon private sector will probably kill all alternative fuel ventures. We will be back send our enemies in the middle east 700 Billion a year. Under President Obama irrespective of the price of oil we will invest in technologies which will completely end our dependance on oil, it may take us a few years to get the economies of scale like as in any new product. McCain would’nt do that, because he firmly is again govt intervention (core republican principle) even if it means strengthening our enemies economically. But sometimes govt intervention is a necessary evil.

After skimming these I didn’t see the answer to an early question so if it is in here I apologize.
The reason Countdown received a heavy viewer uptick on Wednesday is because it was the show after Obama’s “infomercial.” I watched Obama’s show there and just kept watching Keith but I watch Keith anyway. I bet a lot of viewers watched Obama and just kept watching. No big mystery there.
Other than the fact that it seems to drive Bill crazy who cares (exception: networks and stockholders) which one has bigger numbers. That is what the remote is for. Watch the show you like. This is what this country has come to: people attacking each other personally over tv shows. Bill is an entertainer, that is what he is paid to do. People watch him for a variety of reasons, not the least is his ability to go over the top. That is why he is worth so much money to FOX. Lots of calm reasoned persons have lost shows. If he were one of them he wouldn’t have a show. He isn’t dull.
And Keith, Keith is just using Bill’s bizarre behaviors to entertain his viewers. It’s all one big joke. Obviously, if the “Countdown” viewers had no idea who O’Reilly was the “outrage” would not work. We all need to lighten up and stop demonizing anyone we don’t agree with. Stop calling people names.
In this wonderfully wacky world we live in Joe the Plumber can’t believe his luck. Of course he would take advantage of his “celebrity.” That is the American way. I think McCain who mocked Obama for being a celebrity has unwittingly created two more celebrities, Joe the Plumber and Sarah the Governor. Amazing but financially good for them.
I just want this election to be over and for the winner to actually deliver on the promise which both candidates have made: to overcome this divide, bring the whole country together, and help all Americans get a better life. Isn’t that what we all want?

I saw Olbermann bragging yesterday how his show beat O’reilly’s show 7 out of the last 13 days in the demo. He called Bill out for asking for an investigation into the numbers. Olbermann said Bill was number 2 because “you suck”. Well, he should probably have mentioned that 7 out of 13 is not a big victory, and that the numbers are exremely close in the demographic. However, in TOTAL viewers, Olbermann gets CRUSHED by O’reilly. Because he squeaks by in a demo, he thinks he is the new king. Somebody should tell him that many more people watch the other guy.
The Proof: Fixed news hired Huckabee, a far right-wing guy to host a show devoted to talk down on Obama. Huckabee consistently talks down on Obama and gives the McCain talking points. Now Faux Noise has Hannity, Billo Factor, Huckabee Show and all their repubs that come on to bash the dems daily. Enough is enough of this right-wing tank.

This SNL skit was truly amazing. I seldom watch SNL but I just happened to tune in last night. I thought when the skit first came on it would be a fluff piece for Olbermann. I was truly stunned! It depicted the Olberman that I think truly exist. A man so in love with himself and his own perceived wittiness that he does not realize what an idiot .. a twisted demented idiot he comes off as. He at times seems slightly deranged. Rupert Murdoch who fired Olberman years ago said he was crazy.
Afleck presented a piece that no conservative could have gotten away with. It showed his melodramatic obsessions his paranoia, his adolescent obsession with harrassing anyone he deems as competion or who does not like him.
This skit even detailed how it does not matter what Bush says it is evidence of the need to bring him up on charges.
The executives at GE need to study that skit and see the message in it. It was not just funny…it was bone chillingly insightful.

If SNL presented even handed portrayals of the left like that on a regular basis then their ratings would blow through the ceiling.

Yeah, things were going well under Clinton, and we were running a surplus. We also had a Republican House and Senate at the time also. The last two times we had a Dem House and Senate, as well as a Dem President (Dem-Dem-Dem), were the first two years of Clinton’s first term, and the 4 years that Carter was in office.
People were so happy with the Dem-Dem-Dem setup during Clinton’s first two years, that in the 94 mid-terms, the Rep’s gained 54 house seats, 8 senate seats, and 12 governor seats.
During Carter’s four years (again, entirely Dem-Dem-Dem), the economy was bad. I don’t really remember that era, as I was born in ‘78.
It wasn’t until the Rep’s took over both houses of congress that things turned around. Why does Clinton get all the credit? Shouldn’t the credit be shared?

Yes, it is a business, and they are out to make money. However, I don’t base how good a network (or a particular show) is by the amount of ad revenue they generate. I care about demos when I am here to see if T:SCC will be stay on the air, but when discussing who has the BEST (not most profitable) news show, demographics don’t play into the discussion. More “people” watch O’reilly, but even that isn’t very important. Bill allows opposing viewpoints on his show. Olbermann does not. How can you possibly have a fair show, if you only give one viewpoint? Also, we will see how well Olbermann does after Obama takes office. With nobody to beat up on, I feel he numbers will drop down big time.
While I don’t support Obama, I do hope things go well under his administration. I don’t think they will, as a Dem-Dem-Dem setup is likely to cause massive spending increases (just as a Rep-Rep-Rep setup has). The best times we had were when we had a Dem in the White House, and Reps in the House and Senate. Unfortunately, we are in for massive changes for at least two years, as there will be no opposition for the Dems. I prefer having the power split.
For the record, I am not a Republican. I am an Independent (or “decline to state”, as they say here in California). I do not have blind faith in any one side. I have not been happy with Bush, and I believe change is needed.
I consider myself a conservative leaning centrist, and I try to view everything from an independent standpoint. Many people watch MSNBC “because” they are liberal, or Fox “because” they are conservative. I step back and try to watch both, knowing that each are going to lean one way. After watching both for a while, it is clear to me that MSNBC (or more specifically Olbermann) leans farther to the left than Fox does to the right.

To be mocked on SNL is a huge honor for anyone because it shows that you make such a big impact on society and what is watched on television, that they take time to make skits about the person and make them out to be more than what they really are. Furthermore, SNL mocking Olbermann was not an exact depiction of him, just like their depiction of Palin, McCain, Obama and Biden isn’t. They just do their best to exaggerate the character and make them look stupid. For you to put so much emphasis on an 8-minute skit is ridiculous and shouldn’t have any effect on Olbermann… in fact, not only will Olbermann love it, but he will probably praise Affleck for his great acting. By the way, did you know that Affleck and Olbermann are very good friends? They know each other very well, so there was nobody better to depict Keith. My point is that it was amazing that SNL actually portrayed the nut cake Olberman that GE fired. It was his ranting “Eviscerated on all fronts” monolouge on the night of the Republican Convention complete with melodramatic and praticed head spin that got his butt canned from any future Election Anchoring. Matthews got the boot too, but it was all based on Olbermann’s rant. That is a matter of record reported by the AP.
Olbermann’s unfairness and his bizarre paranoias are legendary. For that to have been portrayed to the degree that it was with the depth of writing is just as noteworth as the Palin spoofs. You may not realize it with a name like whatliberalmedia…..but if you go back and read many of the articles from the time Olberman was fired you will see that it is a matter of record that there are high level people who called for his head. And they were in fact the big guys at GE who were catching hell from stockholders furious over Olberman.

I’ve seen enough to know that Keith Olbermann (and now Rachel Maddow) are exceptional in their political knowledge and insights. I love both of their shows and actually miss them on the weekend.

I think Olbermann is kind of creepy. I am a democrat – I should love him. I think the SNL skit with Ben Afleck was perfect!!! I used to watch MSNBC and now I watch O’Reilly. He just makes sense. His reporting is fair, he does not dominate with sarcasm, and he is a kind person. Maybe I am getting old (or maybe I am just getting wise).
