ABC led in total viewers, though the Monday airing was at series lows. NBC easily won both the 18-49 and 18-34 age demographics with strong numbers from Saturday Night Live: Presidential Bash 2008. Things were not so rosy for Fox…
Daylight Saving Time might have helped The Big Bang Theory, but it did not help our friends at Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. TSCC pulled in 5.16 million viewers. Two weeks ago, it had 5.34 million in the overnights. The show did not air last Monday due to the World Series. The end of DST may have helped The Big Bang Theory which hauled in nearly 10 million (9.73) and had very good numbers in the demos. I know a lot of people will say “But TSCC has to run against Monday Night Football (a bad loss for my Redskins) “, but so does everything else at 8pm and The Big Bang Theory/How I Met Your Mother combo netted their best results of the season.
Dancing With the Stars still had the most viewers of any show, but according to what we read it was the program’s lowest regular performance show (dancing, not results) and off 11% from its season averages.
Too bad for NBC that the election isn’t all the time and that Deal or No Deal is the regular programming. Deal’s 200th episode was a yawner ratings-wise, but the Saturday Night Live: Presidential Bash 2008 could overcome even that, averaging a 5.6 rating among 18-49 year olds and easily winning the night in the demo for NBC.
Up against stiffer competition from NBC, CBS was down from its usual pace (and last week) from 9pm-11pm. Samantha Who? again beat Worst Week in total viewers (though this lead may evaporate when the minute or two of DWTS is taken out of Samantha’s numbers in the finals) but Worse Week still had the edge in the demo. Here are last week’s overnight numbers if you want to do any week-to-week comparisons.

Nielsen TV Ratings: ©2008 The Nielsen Company. All Rights Reserved.
Definitions:
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)
Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Is it me or has PB rose a touch?
Okay – SARAH is not as bad as it appears – being OFF & ON over the last 4 weeks, a presidential mess of people planning their day today and the time change – I think SARAH will be nearer the 6 million mark next week…ALL is okay – but I hope they make it to 8 million by seasons end.
Darn! Great episode of TSCC last night too. It’s making me crazy that the ratings are like this.
Well it looks like this is the week that Samantha beat the awful Worst Week.
I don’t think MNF is the problem for Terminator. I’m more inclined to say that it’s BBT, or the timeslot overall, but saying that could be seen as just looking for excuses. It’s somethign else. Considering that Chuck, Pushing Daisies, etc. are also having problems, I’m calling it the “curse of sophomore shows”. The only exception to the curse seems to be BBT.
Was 12.8 average, above, or below the norm for Two and a half men this season?
Well below.
BBT is a half hour light hearted comedy. Sarah is a very dark drama. It’s not really suprising that a comedy is doing so well, considering the economical and political uncertinity we face. I’m not going to get too worried about a season 3 of T:SCC until I see how it performs in ‘09. If the show gets a new time slot and a decent lead in, anything is possible.
It may not get the ratings/demos it deserves but next week’s TSCC ep. looks like it will be awesome!
Now that the election is almost over, NBC will sink further into the ratings toilet. I bet they wish they could get ratings like this from Heroes. My prediction for next week is that Heroes will fall into the 7-8 million range. Stick a fork in Heroes, it’s just about done! I know many of you think the demo will save it, but if you look at the $4 million per episode cost of that show, it may not be enough.
Gerry, indeed, next week’s TSCC episode will rock. Three words: John. Cameron. Bed.
If that doesn’t result in higher ratings…
Wow, SNL Presidential Bash gave NBC a real boost in viewers and demos, eh?
Wasn’t Deal or No Deal a much higher ratings-winner in past seasons? Looks like that show’s reached its saturation point, IMHO.
I wonder why DTWS saw that bit of boost in between the 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. hours?
WOW, huge numbers for SNL, for by and large (at least the few minutes I saw) repeats of skits from the Thursday editions the last few weeks. CSI:Miami is really taking it on the chin these days. Not that it’s in any danger of dropping from #1 in its timeslot, but it used to be really strong. Now, it’s just solid, but not extremely impressive.
Gossip Girl >> 2.4/6 (18-34)
wow!
Jenny wasnt my fav. character, but she rules this season!
xxx
B
The Big Bang Theory 9.73 4.0/10 3.3/9,are this numbers correct? at pifeedback they have 9,9 and 3,8 in the 18-49?and they have 1,6 for the demo for gossip girl.which one is correct?
Huge numbers for SNL. So people do know where NBC is on their remotes on Monday nights. So that must be that Heroes is just that bad.
Pretty pathetic for Samantha Who? Unfortunately for ABC, they don’t really have any comedies that do any better, unless one of their midseason replacements take off.
Its pretty bad for TSCC when it almost gets beat by “Cuidado con el Angel”? Maybe if TSCC was done in Spanish it would higher ratings.
Gee, let’s see…
Terminator went down last airing after it hadn’t aired in two weeks and went down some more this time after doing the same. I for one am shocked. *rolls eyes* If you’re going to talk negatively about one show, do it the same for others. Prison Break went down as well, yet you don’t even mention it.
HEROES? More like ZEROES these days. Sinking like a rock. Season 1 rocked then it all fell apart.
It’s funny how good 2.5 men does cause none of the people I know watch it!
Vitor — d’oh! I had used the 8pm-9pm hourly average for both TBBT and HIMYM — if it’s any consolation, I had HIMYM correct. TBBT had 9.896mm viewers. It and the demos have been corrected, thank you…
TSCC is on too early. A timeslot of about 9:00 or 9:30 would be better. Worst Week is pretty good. It’s refreshing to have a show without that awful laughter track telling you where the jokes are.
Gossip Girl has been doing good too. I would like to see Jenny leave the show though, she’s not a good actress and the whole “I’m a 15 year old adult” thing is annoying. A replacement actress might be a good idea too.
Also, given the shape of things on Prison Break (Micheal being sick) I’d say it’s a setup to close the show at the end of the season. Maybe it’s for the best. I do still enjoy it.
SNL numbers are amazing. Who would have thought?
@ Gusar:
“Gerry, indeed, next week’s TSCC episode will rock. Three words: John. Cameron. Bed.”
I echo those three words.
When I saw that in the preview, I about fainted. I was like, “Holy freaking crap, this episode is gonna rule.” I mean sure, the rest of the preview looked awesome as well, but that certainly took the cake for me.
About the actual ratings, blah, being off and on over the past month due to baseball certainly doesn’t do any favors. Not to mention Prison Break came in really low as well. Yeah, time slot definitely plays a factor. I really REALLY hope come January Fox will give TSCC a time slot it deserves so people can tune in and realize how much potential the show has. An American Idol lead in would be pure win, though I’m probably reaching a bit too far there…

It’s funny how good 2.5 men does cause none of the people I know watch it!
Well, I love 2 1/2 men and no lots of folks that do. I know it’s a traditional sitcom setup, but the show is dang funny with it’s dick and fart routine!
How’d the Bash’s ratings compare to the ‘04 Bash?
Kurtwood Smith is the only reason I watch Worst Week. The plots do get a bit old as it’s pretty much the same from week to week. Fox should have just gave Kurtwood his own spinoff….”Red Forman Knows Best”
Ed, unless NBC does a press release with the comparisons we won’t know, our individual show data doesn’t go back to 2004.
The ONLY, and I mean ONLY, plus side here is that TSCC tied with Deal or New Deal in terms of 18-49 and 18-35 viewers, and Prison Break only negligibly built on those numbers. Do you think there’s any possibility that Fox would do an about-face and cancel TSCC and PB despite having ordered the “back 9″ for each?
I don’t think so Outlander, at least not before trying out a new time slot or something. If the shows get the same numbers in a better timeslot however, who knows…
I also think ratings will increase once “Dancing With the Stars” ends this month. It’s ABC’s American Idol, and those 20 million people need to go somewhere. Has it been announced what will take its timeslot once it ends?
Rachel, according to thefutoncritic.com’s winter grid, the Ashton Kutcher/Tyra Banks reality show is going to on Mondays.
I see, thank you for explaining. I’m really not familiar at all with their new reality show… is it highly anticipated?
Rachel: there is absolutely zero buzz for it.
Does anybody know what show will be paired with 24 when it returns? I always liked my PB -> 24 Monday nights… which leads me to wonder how ratings were for PB back in those days before 24 and during…
If only there was a place or website that talks about ratings information according to various standards…
Sam, rumor has it that Dollhouse will be paired with 24.
@ Chris:
Oh HALLELUJAH *huge sigh of relief*
So wait, if Dollhouse and 24 are paired on Monday… any rumors bout where TSCC is gonna go? (Sorry, I realize basically everything I say here involves that show…eheh)
Rachel, when it got the full season pick up, there were rumors about it being paired with Idol. At this point, I don’t think anyone knows for sure.
PB is still doing solid. But Worst Week is still going down. But, the strange thing is, 2.5 men was down too. But Mother was up. It was probaly snl that brought the ratings down.
Ah, that’s right. I remember those rumors and will rejoice if they turn to be true (my two favorite shows airing back to back… hah, would be a pretty good night of TV in my books). I think it’d be a good move since most likely the reason the full season of TSCC was picked up was to promote the movie coming out in May, so pairing it with a ratings jaggernaut would make sense to help with that promotion.
Election Coverage 2004
NBC: 15.05 million, A18-49: 5.2
ABC: 12.24 million, A18-49: 4.1
CBS: 9.11 million, A18-49: 3.2
Sam, where PB was paired with 24, ratings were very good.
So, I guess we can expect ratings go up, when it retunrs next year…
Terminator is going to air on Friday Nights this Idol Season.
House and Fringe are getting the highly clamored for “Idol Spots.” The good news for Terminator is that it will air with BONES, so maybe they can steal CBS’ hold on Friday nights.
Is it the first time that Gossip Girl beat OTH in viewers ?
Found the 2004 bash ratings, was only one hour then:
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117912869.html?categoryid=1043&cs=1
Wish I had a Set Meter or Nielsen diary next Monday to boost TSCC.
Can’t believe I’m writing this but I may stick around for PB to see
if there’s any gas left in the tank.
You’d think by now that Kutcher/Banks show would have announced piddly details like “Title” or “Premise”, wouldn’t you?
One would think so, Chris. I wonder what’s going on with that over at ABC.
super one tree hill…does oth have good results?
so let’s wait for a new season..
http://www.blogapuntate.it/categoria/one-tree-hill
Thanks to Ed for the Variety link. I just read that article. Wow, a CSI Miami repeat brought in 14.4 million viewers. A new one in ‘08 only brought in 12.7. Perhaps this is the beginning of the end.
Comedy rules.
Since 1951 the top rated shows break down as follows:
COMEDIES = 26
DRAMAS = 19
UNSCRIPTED = 6
NEWS = 5
QUIZ = 2
Source WIkipedia
JT, and if you had compared the numbers with 2004 to 2000, you would’ve been even more alarmed. It never ends. The scale just changes.
Nick C – May I ask where you heard this?
I heard DOLLHOUSE is being re-tooled – I don’t see them ready by January and having at least 6 episodes in the can…SARAH has been renewed probably because of the DOLLHOUSE delays – but if they are moving SARAH to FRIDAYS – then that’s like sending it to it’s grave – remember DARK ANGEL ??
- and BONES ON FRIDAYS TOO?
BONES though not strong has won some of their Wed nites – FOX really promoted that – I remember the 2 and half minute music video they played ALL SUMMER LONG -I remeber because it got annoying…every 20 minutes!!! I don’t see them throwing that away and moving BONES a third time?!!
Funniest episode yet for Worst Week. This show is hysterical. Don’t know why the ratings aren’t higher. Best new comedy hands down.
I really hope TSCC doesn’t move to friday night. It will just end up being cancelled then so just as well to do it now and have it over.
Hold it, Terminator on Fridays? … not sure what to think of that. Well, would Bones be leading into it, or vice versa?
I just hope this will be for the best if it does turn out to be true. Though yeah, where did you hear this anyway Nick C? It seems weird that they’d move Bones to Fridays. Where is Prison Break going then?
“Now that the election is almost over, NBC will sink further into the ratings toilet. I bet they wish they could get ratings like this from Heroes. My prediction for next week is that Heroes will fall into the 7-8 million range. Stick a fork in Heroes, it’s just about done! I know many of you think the demo will save it, but if you look at the $4 million per episode cost of that show, it may not be enough.”
I don’t think so JT. Kring’s new orders from NBC/Universal is to focus the show back on simpler stories and character development. That means less special effects and more plot, which will make the price per episode cheaper.
This was the formula in season 1, and it worked very well.
I don’t know if a show like Heroes which started out with a big audience then took a big drop can be dragged up again. Shows that start out small often grow to be massive hits but not too many can be saved once they loose viewers. I can’t think of any myself but I might be wrong though.
Anyone?
Max,
Too little, too late my friend. It’s very hard to get your audience back once you’ve jumped the proverbial shark, which “Heroes” essentially did after the first season. Season 2 was at least watchable, but season 3 has been a disaster. I’m not saying they can’t fix the show, but they’re not going to get their viewers back. “Heroes” will be on in 2009-10, but it won’t see a season 5. Disagree if you want. It’s only my opinion.
How many times has FOX planned on moving Bones to Friday only to not end up doing it for first run episodes? Moving a solid performing show to a poor viewership night is a horrible move, especially for FOX who pretty much invented the term “Friday night death slot”. FOX got greedy with the O.C. hype and thought it could translate into good ratings on a night where they got trounced by the big 3. Judging by how a show that was one of the biggest buzz shows in over a decade ended up going down hill so fast that it didn’t even run for a full 22 episode season after the move…this is not a good strategy.
Bones probably skews much older than The O.C. did but its gonna really take a huge chunk of weekly viewers from FOX if it moves to Friday. Its one of the few things that work on FOX’s fall schedule for the past view seasons so why mess with it?
JT,
The way things are going you are right. If NBC is canning producers and writers it obviously doesn’t hold as much value in the show as we thought they did. The show can be fixed but not without a complete reboot and mass exodus of characters. Kill half the originals….keep the other half…..stop adding characters. No more using time travel and absorbtion of powers to get yourself out of the corner you’ve managed to back yourself into.* Make us care about the “heroes” again and stop the flip flopping of characters from good to bad or vice versa. Stop using a death of a character to end an episode for a cliff hanger only to bring them back to life somehow about 30 seconds into the following episode. I know its sci fi but if we keep seeing people who are supposed to be dead end up not being so there really is no concern or suspense by the viewer whenever anyone gets into a precarious situation.
I wouldn’t say Heroes has jumped the shark because that usually is a gigantic series changing moment that is completely out of whack from everything the show did before that. I can’t think of a specific moment that Heroes has done this, so to me its not really a show that has jumped the shark as much as it is one that has started its downhill slide in creativity and quality.
It can be fixed. Look at Lost. Most people thought that the show had gone downhill somewhere between the middle of season 2 through the end of season 3 only to come back in Season 4 with what most people rank almost as high as season 1.
*possible spoiler…recent weeks indicated that perhaps they are working on these issues.
…On a more positive note, while I know digital viewers don’t really matter to networks, the newest Terminator ep is currently #1 on Amazon’s video dowload service.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/digital-video/ref=pd_dp_ts_atv_1
As a fan of TSCC, I’m starting to hate Sarah more and more each episode. Her abrasive overprotective personality could be off-putting to viewers and detract them from watching. The writers should tone it down a bit.
Another series low for a new episode of CSI Miami- 12.67. If this ship continues it Titanic voyage, I suspect there’ll be some stars abandoning ship next summer. Its ratings have been steadily declining since the 2nd episode, but the 12.8 for 2 1/2 Men is a shocker! Either all those sex jokes are starting to get a little stale or the SNL presidential bash was really, really good.
DOLLHOUSE will be ready in January. Yes, they made some script rewrites. However the show is still on schedule for January. The show will be teamed up with 24 on Mondays. That is certain.
So with Mondays being Dollhouse/24 and Tuesdays being IDOL/HOUSE, Wednesday is a new comedy/American Idol/FRINGE. HOUSE and FRINGE might switch nights, but they are set to be the IDOL shows.
That means Thursday and Friday are the only choices for Terminator and Bones. Perhaps FOX is seriously considering the Thursday move as rumored.
IF so: Tuesday would be House/Fringe (staying the same), and Wednesday would be Bones/Idol, and Thursday would be new comdey/idol/Terminator?
If I was producing Terminator I’d want a Friday night following Bones vs Thursday Night….
hmm why isn’t Heroes on the list?…i thought it’s aired on mondays…extremely low ratings? :S!
Why Nick C? And I don’t mean that in a negative way, I’m just asking your opinion. I obviously don’t know much about how all this works, but it seems that a Thursday following Idol would be better than a Friday following Bones. Or am I missing something here?
@Luis:
Here’s a question I can actually answer! The Saturday Night Live election special took the 8-10 pm timeslot on NBC.
Er, 9-10 timeslot. My bad.
Crap, 9 to 11, I mean.
Wow, I need to just stop trying to answer things.
TSCC should be cancelled with those numbers
I just can’t wait to see the midseason schedules, Lost/24/American Idol will improve the ratings this season.
do cbs viewers need a laugh track to know what is funny. Worst Week is the funniest new comedy on TV
viewers don’t appreciate the type of humor that this show has.
Rachel, rather simple: Would you want to be in the same time slot as Grey’s Anatomy and CSI?
Friday the only competition is CBS with Ghost Whisperer and what ever new show they come up with.
Again, I love how NO ONE mentions the horrible Prison Break numbers. Heck, some people even consider that doing well! Yay for objectivity!
Nick: Good point.
I was just clinging to the possiblity that Idol could carry a good amount of viewers over, but that is a lot of stiff competition for that hour. I suppose Friday after Bones would be best. I’m just afraid the viewership could go even further down on a Friday night than where it’s at now.
Any idea when the schedule will be finalized? Sorry for all the questions. I’m just anxious, hehe. I appreciate your answers though.
Rachel, I think FOX is going to continue to feed the IDOL on Thursday Rumor through out the November Sweeps. I figure November Sweeps will shape it all up for them (and all the other networks as well).
Idol is probably the only show that can move to Thursday nights. Anything else is gonna lose a huge amount of viewers. With CSI, Survivor, and Grey’s trending downward in ratings it could probably move to a time slot opposite any one of them and beat it. This would effectively give FOX 4 very solid (if not spectacular by their standards) nights in the ratings.
Mon: 8/7c- 24(content be damned…it needs to anchor the night to help new shows)
9/8c- Dollhouse/Prison Break/TSCC??
Tue: 8/7c – House
9/8c – Bones
Wed: 8/7c – American Idol
9/8c – Fringe
Thur: 8/7c – American Idol: Results (screw it…just make it an hour all season)
9/8c – Dollhouse/TSCC/Prison Break??
So by chosing 2 out of 3 shows with no certain destination(Dollhouse/TSCC/PB) it still leaves one out in the cold to be sent to Friday nights. My guess is that knowing the struggles PB and TSCC have had this season they probably aren’t gonna try an uphill battle pushing them to succeed. Dollhouse could totally flop but give it a chance to catch a few post Idol eyes and see what happens. This never really worked for any of the failed comedies that were lead outs from AI, but both Bones and House have benefited from it so perhaps an hour long is a better bet.
Vader is right, everyone who mentions the bad TSCC ratings completely fails to mention that Prison Break is doing just as bad! I guess it shows that no one actually cares about PB in any way.
Remember that TSCC is the hot topic right now, so obviously the numbers will be discussed a lot more than PB. I don’t understand what the problem is with that. It’s like complaining about how much we talk about the bad economy in the US by pointing out the bad economy in the EU, and then asking why aren’t we talking about the EU economy as much as we’re talking about the US one (assuming you live in the US).
PB’s numbers aren’t good but have been better than TSCC, objectively. Slightly higher viewers and better demos pretty much every week in recent memory. As for Vader, he’s just salty because TSCC is sinking so he’s projecting.
Honestly the two shows are doing pretty much the same as far as I’m concerned. PB has slightly higher demos sure, but it’s on at the 9 pm timeslot which is watched by more people usually. Switch the two’s timeslots and TSCC would be ahead of it most likely.
Erm no, nice try. I’m sorry I’m being objective and pointing out bad numbers when I see them, unlike everyone else who ignores them and calls them good. The US vs, EU comparison is so off base it’s not even funny. Both shows air here, not overseas, so calling one show more relevant than the other for those reasons is idiotic. Any show that takes multiple weeks off over a short span will lose viewers, you don’t have to have much of a clue to figure that out.
The sad part of the whole ratings thing is, the shows which get the low ratings are not bad, atleast on Mondays.. TSCC is very good ( for every Terminator fan), Prison Break ( Good with still continuing the brilliant plots) and Chuck ( This one is really better than the other shows).. Even though these 3 shows are good.. plot wise and story wise.. still they get very low ratings..
Several weeks ago, all I was hearing was that SCC was going to be off the air soon. Then it got picked up for the season. Can anyone tell me why? The word was so negative and the ratings were (and still are) terrible. I mean, I like the show but it just has not performed. Why did Fox decide to keep it around?
Lisa, FOX makes money on it. Why else keep it around?
My hope for TSCC is the Spring schedule with Idol and 24 will just draw more viewers to FOX in general and help the ratings. I think that is FOX’s hope too. Otherwise, yeah, we may only get season two out of this show.
Regardless, Monday’s episode was one of the best so far this season. I loved the touch the writers threw in about Cameron’s obsession with recovering her purple leather jacket back from the thieves.
Cameron: “You have my jacket.”
Thief wearing the jacket: “Come and get it.”
Cameron: *pulls gun* “Come and give it to me.”
LOL Frank!!
Yeah, that was totally priceless. Cameron rules. I agree that this episode was one of the best of the season (I think only second to the season opener). I loved it so much I just had to buy it off iTunes
(even though I recorded it on my dvr, lol)
*goes to put it on iPhone*
By the way Nick, so is FOX actually getting a good amount of money from the show? It just seems like since the ratings aren’t hot that it wouldn’t be doing real well money wise.
