Wednesday Night Ratings: Post Election Blahs Or Just Broadcast TV?

Posted on 06 November 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard ABC CBS FOX NBC Uni CW
Total Viewers (million) 10.85 10.48 8.41 6.27 4.51 2.97
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 3.0/8 2.8/7 3.0/8 1.9/5 1.8/5 1.5/4
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 1.8/5 2.2/6 2.5/7 1.4/4 1.9/5 1.8/5

ABC had the most viewers for the first Wednesday of November sweeps thanks to Dancing With the Stars at 8pm. But second place CBS and third place Fox tied among 18-49 year olds. And to hammer home the point of what a v ast wasteland the broadcast networks are among the youth, Fox won the 18-34 year old demo with a new Bones and a repeat of House, though ABC’s Private Practice in the same hour was night’s most watched show among the 18-34 set.

There were many season lows last night.

Though Bones had more than 5 million fewer viewers at 8pm than DWTS, it took the 18-49 win for the hour and tied with America’s Next Top Model for the lead among 18-34 year olds. Speaking of ANTM, I know some want to say it’s bad compared to its past history. But the past is the past. With almost twelve million fewer viewers than DWTS, it beat DWTS among 18-34 year olds by almost 45%. The problem for the CW on Wednesdays isn’t ANTM, it’s that the ANTM crowd isn’t sticking around for the new Stylista.

Criminal Minds was the night’s most-watched scripted show both in total viewers and among 18-49 year olds, but the tale the numbers paint for CBS is this: 35-49 year old viewers seem to compose most of its 18-49 year old demo numbers.

I hoped the numbers in the fast nationals would allow me to find some silver lining for the timeslot premiere of Life at 9pm, but all I really have is that NBC has so many lousy performers in the demo, I can cross my fingers that Life more or less winds up as average. But Life tied with Fuego en la Sangre among 18-49 year olds, and Fuego crushed it among 18-34 year olds. It could be worse, Knight Rider was beat across the board by Cuidado con el Angel.

The nineteenth season premiere of Law & Order didn’t fare much better for the peacocks. It drew less than 8 million and had less 18-34 year old viewers than Dirty Sexy Money. Still, it beat the snot out of the of Lipstick Jungle in that time slot two weeks ago, but not really by so much when compared to last week.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Cool says:

Life is a flop now in three different time slots.

  2. Cool says:

and ouch Law and Order.. down 44% with the last season premiere.

  3. Bill Gorman says:

Let me second Robert’s point on the CW Wednesday’s. ANTM is doing well for the network. Stylista looks doomed.

And wow on the Law & Order numbers. Everyone that reads Robert knows that I am a fan, but those results are humbling.

  4. The numbers were so bad I didn’t want to attach your name to them…

  5. JT says:

I think there’s something wrong with your chart…are Fox and NBC flip flopped?

  6. JT, actually CBS, Fox and NBC were all out of order…fixed.

  7. hookedonmick says:

My eleven year old son will be disappointed with Knight Riders ratings….good for Criminal Minds…

  8. Mike G. says:

Knight Rider is hitting a new low…or is Cuidado con el Angel hitting a new high? NBC was lucky that it had the Olympics over the summer. Wow, so much for Must See TV….those days are long gone.

  9. Andrea says:

I’m thinking a lot in the demo were hung over yesterday and crashed to sleep instead of watching TV. I know that’s what I did ;)

Now, with the demo numbers in, Life doesn’t look all that bad comparatively. I hear that it gained in the 2nd half hour.

Now, for the bad news, NBC is just a mess. With L&O pulling in only a 2.2. :o , someone’s head is going to roll. It’s just a matter of who’s and when.

Can’t believe CW and UNI are beating CBS and NBC in the demos.

  10. Andrea, I buy the “sleeping it off” theory at least a little — thus the post title. Life did increase in the second half hour, but so insignificantly it didn’t seem worth writing about. 231,000 viewers and a .1 among 18-49 year olds.

  11. Gerry says:

Small consolation, but at least Life topped the network average 18-49 numbers by a bit.

  12. Harry says:

The fact that Dancing with the Stars moved to Wednesday due to the elections on Tuesday had a major impact on both CBS and especially NBC.

I am sure NBC’s numbers will improve come next week but I don’t think by much.

  13. V. S. says:

All in all, Knight Rider really isn’t that bad of a show. I watched it last night and enjoyed it. Too bad it’s not doing better.

  14. Sam says:

ouch… too bad, I really like Life. Maybe it can hang on for a few weeks and pick up some viewers. KR really went in the tank this week too T.T

  15. Sam says:

VS, hopefully it’ll recover in the coming weeks. I need a little mindless fun in my TV diet.

  16. Cool says:

    PUSHING DAISIES CANCELED!!!

Pushing Daisies Going Six Feet Under

Hearing Pushing Daisies has been canceled. Not sure if they’ll air the rest of the series. It’s off the air next week for the CMA Awards.

    http://travisyanan.blogspot.com/2008/11/pushing-daisies-going-six-feet-under.html

  17. Thunder Mountain says:

NBC is really hurting when Knight Rider gets beat by Cuidado con el Angel.

  18. Thunder Mountain says:

At least life beat Fuego en la Sangre, thats gotta be a plus!

  19. Mikey says:

Another hand-raised for “sleeping it off” here.

It was an all-DVR night for me. Watched the Stewart-Colbert election night special (shockingly not funny at all); watched the moment of victory and the acceptance speech again; lights out and asleep by 10pm.

  20. Watch Chuck on NBC says:

Knight Rider is a show that belongs in syndication on the weekends. Maybe, it will follow suit with NBC’s Spy Girls from years ago.

  21. Cool says:

    where’s my comment??

    Pushing Daisies: Canceled

Hearing Pushing Daisies has been canceled. Not sure if they’ll air the rest of the series. It’s off the air next week for the CMA Awards.

    http://travisyanan.blogspot.com/2008/11/pushing-daisies-going-six-feet-under.html

  22. Kyle C says:

It is odd that NBC wins the key Demos during election coverage, yet has been struggling to attract/retain them all season. Wonder how much DVR viewing is affecting NBC’s overnights amongst the 18-49 & 18-35 Demos.

  23. Vader says:

Law & Order got killed by that pathetic leadin.

  24. Matt says:

Whoa, quite the revealing first Wednesday of the November sweeps period. Another new low resulted for a first run CSI NY this season, and it’s lower than the new CSI Miami episode that aired Monday. Meanwhile, ratings magnet, DWTS pulled another stunner with its elimination show. Apparently, it doesn’t matter what night you put that show on, that audience is going to follow it wherever it goes. Too bad ABC isn’t smart enough to develop a winning spinoff from it … something along the lines of “Dance War: Bruno vs Carrie Ann,” to lead off the night if/when Pushing Daises ends. Private Practice is a solid hit with not much on either side of it viewer wise.

  25. Thunder Mountain says:

Knight Rider isnt Knight Rider without THE HOFF (even if he sometimes eats burgers off the floor) and the original KITT.

Maybe they could make a series about NIGHT RIDER from MAX MAX? Before he got burned up and stuffed into that itty bitty coffin that Toecutter picked up at the train station.

  26. Alias 47 says:

NBC needs to clean house—keep The Office, 30 Rock, and Chuck and get rid of the rest. Sorry Heroes fans but that show jumped the shark in season 1 and has been laughable ever since.

  27. Kathy says:

Also an all DVR night for me, but I did sort of get my Life fix by watching Band of Brothers on DVD.

  28. John B says:

Ouch for knight rider. has pushing daiesies been offically cancelled??

  29. Fin says:

Chuck should be cancelled in my opinion; replaced with Knight Rider (Chuck isn’t doing that well for NBC). 30 Rock; although i like it and the season premiere numbers i don’t like the previous seasons numbers (5.8 and 6.4!?) ; pretty poor. Hope it does better this season. Heroes shouldn’t go so far this year its one of NBC’s top performing scripted (and non-scripted) shows. Better than 30 Rock did on its premiere (on average).

  30. Thunder Mountain says:

Its not hard for HEROES to be a top performing scripted show, considering how bad NBC is going in general. The only thing keeping it going is its 18-49 demo, but even that is half what it once was. My guess is it get 1 more season, a 13 episode closer next Fall. Its suffering from some of the same flaws that killed THE 4400 – too many subplots and filler episodes.

  31. Cool says:

    sorry for the double post

  32. Alias 47 says:

Chuck should be replaced by Knight Rider? Are you KIDDING ME!!! Chuck is 3 times the show KR is. Chuck get rave reviews from the majority of the critics including Entertainment Weekly. While KR is a C-rated show that belongs in syndication on the weekends.

The only reason KR is doing better than Chuck is because of the time-slot. Chuck is up against DWTS, MNF, Big Bang Theory, HIMYM,…..while KR in on during the dead-zone time-slot. Not one show is averaging at least 10 million viewers on Weds 8pm.

  33. josh says:

    wow! strange wednesday??

WHats happened to CSI:NY!!! and thats really low for L&O!

    Good for PP though!

  34. Fin says:

Thats my point; but NBC won’t cancel it if its one of their top perfomers

  35. MILF Island says:

    WTF?!?!

Chuck should be canceled and replaced by Knight Rider?? I agree with Alias 47 that the only reason KR is doing better than Chuck is because of the timeslot. Chuck is a very good show while Knight Rider is a 2nd rate show with bad acting/writing.

As for Heroes, it may be one ranked in the top ten among 18-49 demo, but is it a profitable show. $4 million is quite a lot of dough. I read a while back Lost did not become profitable for ABC until its 4th season—the same may hold true for Heroes. Should NBC bank on Heroes while it’s declining in quality and fan base?

Fun Fact: Heroes Season One DVD Set gross nearly $70 million to date.
Heroes Season Two DVD Set gross only $22.6 million to date.

The season 2 dvd set will be lucky to crack the $30 million mark.

  36. Cool says:

Yes, but Lost is huge overseas..Heroes is big but not that big. Lost had won Emmys, Golden Globes and Best Drama nominations. Heroes not. Heroes will be lucky if they reach to a 4th season.

  37. Caio says:

    John B

Pushing Daisies is as good as over ,but ABC is wating to see if the ratings on the 19th will improve or not,so no official word on cancellation yet.If you wanna see for yourself,go to ABC.com,the episode for the 19th is scheduled.I guess if ratings don´t spike by then,it´s over.

  38. Dave says:

I was initally surprised and worried about Old Christine, but seeing how bad some most of the other programming did, I’m not as concerned any more. Hopefully next week will bring all of the numbers back to normal.

  39. MILF Island says:

My point exactly. Heroes will not survive past season 3 unless they truly turn things around in quality and maybe ratings.

NBC will give them one more season so the fans won’t create an uproar.

  40. Kyle says:

the second season of heroes has only been on dvd for a few months season 1 haas been fr over a year now. but that is a good point is the show profitable?

  41. Kyle says:

Heroes is failing badly here in OZ but is doing great in the uk

  42. MILF island says:

Yes, Heroes season 2 has only been out a few months but it’s early surge in sales has disappear and probably won’t sell much in the next 12 months.

  43. JT says:

FYI to Cool….Heroes was nominated for the Best Drama Emmy in its first season.

  44. Gojou says:

CBS has been king over the network ratings, it has literally been killing the competition, except on nights with slots filled by the talent shows, like Dancing with the Stars, America’s Got Talent, and American Idol. Still, their top-rated shows haven’t been to far behind those super talent shows.

    Something is wrong at NBC.

  45. V. S. says:

Oh, c’mon, the acting on Knight Rider isn’t bad. I’ve seen a heck of a lot worse on other shows that supposedly do well or are “hits”. KR is a quirky and fun remake. It’s not meant to be a hot intellectual, sophisticated show. It’s pure escapism. Much like my all-time favorite Supernatural. I love the dramas like NCIS, CSI:NY, Life, Bones, Terminator:SCC, etc. but KR is like a mid-week sigh of relief and breath of fresh air.

  46. Cookson says:

    @ MILF

I’m pretty sure LOST was profitable way before Season 4. Not only was it the number one show overseas, but had GREAT DVD sales its first three seasons. So how it wasn’t profitable doesn’t make any sense… if it wasn’t, it would have been canned. Of course it doesn’t have as many viewers as when it first started(their loss), but still very profitable for ABC, especially with only 17 episodes the rest of the way… less spending etc.

  47. Nick C says:

PD is being canceled. The decision was made today after the boost that Private Practice received with a real lead in. No, I’m not the blogger someone else linked to. I just know the decision was made today. After ABC discusses their decision with Bryan, Barry, etc. they will have a press release. I know Bryan and Barry may argue for another night to try and save the show. We’ll see what is up after that discussion. My money is on cancellation and Bryan moving over to NBC for a certain show.

  48. Cool says:

I forgot.. sorry, but it’s impossible to compare Heroes with Lost.

  49. R.G. says:

Wow…the nation really is out of control…CW & UNI have more 18-34 year old viewers???
    …and their watching…..garbage!

Hmmm…everything is beginning to make sense now…CIRCUS WITH THE STARS & The Next top Model are getting key viewers…which we never see or hear from again pretty much when winners are announced from both shows…

so how much of a “TOP MODEL” or “STAR” are they?

Can anyone say “WASTE OF TIME & LIFE” ????

  50. MILF Island says:

I’m pretty sure I read that Lost didn’t become profitable for ABC until they sold the syndication rights. Lost is an expensive show to produce and ABC was probably losing money for the first few seasons but were banking on future DVD sales and the syndication rights.

The pilot cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-$14 million and a ABC executive who green-lit the budget for the pilot was later fired.

  51. idizzle says:

When you say Lost was #1 overseas, do you mean genre show? #1 compared to only Heroes? #1 in some special place overseas? Because the biggest shows worldwide for the last couple of years have been CSI and House.

  52. Mandi says:

BOOO! I’m so disgusted with these numbers! Life got beat out by a House RERUN? Sigh. But at least it built on KR and on its Friday numbers. It should be pretty solid since NBC is sucking so much.

Isn’t Garry Unmarried the strongest new sitcom? The numbers look very decent and it built on ‘Cristine’s’ 18-49 demo. I’m a Paula Marshall fan from ‘Cupid’ and GU is one of the only sitcoms I actually watch. Excellent writing and good acting.

  53. Jeff G says:

Life has been thrown to the lions. NBC needs to work on slotting shows correctly. It is an interesting show but would have a limited audience. Putting it up against Criminal Minds is not the way to get the biggest bang for the buck. How many shows have survived being moved so many times in a fairly short period? Not many.

  54. fin says:

Yeah but the move was to allow NBC to make some money of the already failing show (if any money is made). Life was already dying, there was just no way to save it. NBC is now on damage control not on getting better ratings just making a profit.

  55. Nick C says:

The fact that Life did better than Knight Rider may help it last another week. Another week and who knows what could happen. I think last night for the younger people was a night of “I’m not watching TV after hours watching the election,” but the old people watched TV. It’s what they do. I think the success of CBS compared to the other networks kind of shows that.

  56. sirona7 says:

Add me to the list of folks who love Damian Lewis’ show, LIFE. NBC seems to be struggling with finding the right time spot but I think it’s unfortunate to run it opposite Criminal Minds, one of the top 10 shows each week. I love Life because it shakes its genre, like House does, and, with the right marketing, has potential to charm its way into finding a viably larger audience. I sincerely hope LIFE finds enough passionate viewers, short term, to make the numbers add up to renewal long term, and a fitting reward NBC’s continuing support.

  57. ABCFanatic says:

Wow a huge leap for Private Practice its bigger number this season and slight better for Dirty Sexy Money, Dancing with the Stars should move to Wednesday! Pushing Daisies sucks at ratings!

  58. cesarrr says:

UNIVISION didn’t “beat” anyone. They target an entire different audience and language. It’s not like people stopped watching knight rider and then tuned in to Fuego en la Sangre.
Most people who watch Univision are not even americans, and they watch it because they don’t understand english and it’s one of the 2 or 3 options that they have.
I don’t think UNI should be considered an “american” network, and its numbers don’t represent what americans are watching, plus, most of the shows are from mexico or venezuela.

  59. sam says:

HEY BILL WILL THIS JUST ABOUT KILL CHRISTINES CHANCE OF GETTING RENEWED??

  60. Holly says:

Sam, Probably not. DWTS is not Christine’s normal competition and one week isn’t going to kill the show. If it doesn’t improve any from this then it will be in serious trouble, but CBS isn’t going to axe it based on last night.

  61. Rachel P says:

Well, this shows how much of a chunk DWTS can take out of a show…

  62. Mel says:

Am I reading that correctly? Life built on it’s lead-in from KR? That’s gotta be a positive, right? At least a little . . . .

  63. Bill Gorman says:

Expanding on what Holly wrote, I don’t think any other shows besides Lipstick Jungle, Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Dirty Sexy Money and *maybe* Life are in danger of cancellation prior to January.

There are a lot more shows that are in danger of not being renewed for 2009-10, but there’s a lot of time between now and May and many things can change.

  64. Bill Gorman says:

As far as Life goes, I think that if its 18-49 rating increases next week to a 2.2 it could survive past January.

  65. Dalz says:

Bill, can you please provide half-hour data for Private Practice? This was a huge week for the show… nearly 2 million additional viewers from last week!

  66. Dalz, keeping in mind we only have half hourly data for the fast nationals and not the final numbers (which will be adjusted lower due to DWTS overrun):

    9-9:30p 10.377 million 3.2/8 (18-49), 2.9/8 (18-34)
    930-10p 8.701 million 3.1/8, 2.9/8

  67. Monic says:

But it’s a good thing, right that Life built on Knight Rider’s? audience? In fact, it did better? There’s some hope in that? And also, I really think the elections from the night before had something to do with the turn out in the viewership?

  68. Don says:

“UNIVISION didn’t “beat” anyone. They target an entire different audience and language. It’s not like people stopped watching knight rider and then tuned in to Fuego en la Sangre.”

True but when Uni they beat KR in the overall ratings. People do take notice. Uni’s audience is a resonable size to be included in the prime time TV ratings.

  69. Don says:

For all the talk about ‘Heroes.’ Yes the storyline might be flawed but the Writers Strike is also a factor.

Being the seralized drama that it is it could not return to the airwaves unlike CBS’s sitcoms or crime dramas which have self-contanted stories week after week. At least ‘The 4400′ had self contained stories but hints of an overall arch.

This month we will see how that ‘24′ TV Movie does and what that will mean later in this season.

  70. Caro says:

    Cesarr,

Your comment on “Most people who watch Univision are not even americans, and they watch it because they don’t understand english and it’s one of the 2 or 3 options that they have” I have to say is very ignorant.
I AM American and my first language is Spanish! I happen to speak english very well but enjoy watching spanish shows every once in a while. So to correct you, A lot of people that watch Univision DO speak English, have plenty of options but prefer to watch a show in Spanish!
And what does being an American have to do with watching certain channels?

  71. Bill Gorman says:

Caro, although we have no good data, I think there is more crossover between Univision’s audience and English network audiences than people in the TV media world would like to acknowledge.

  72. Caro says:

I think you are right! I have a few american friends (guys) that will tune into Univison and watch a show even when they don’t understand what is being said (something to do with some of the women’s outfits) :)

  73. Lisa says:

How likely is it that ABC would cancel DSM, Daisies, and Eli Stone (all three) by Jan. or Feb.? That’s a lot of time to fill and doesn’t take into account any other weak spots in their schedule they might want to tweak. Aren’t they more likely to get rid of two of those shows and give the third one a bit more time? If so, would they keep Eli or DSM around?

  74. KellyH says:

NickC seems to have some sort of inside information/contact at ABC. It would be nice if he told us what it was.

  75. Dianne says:

What’s wrong at NBC is that they produce a number of shows that, while episodic, aren’t cookie-cutter replications of themselves. On SVU, for example, or “Life,” each episode is a new story, not the same one as last week with different guest stars (this is a specific allusion to “Criminal Minds”), and therefore requires the viewer to pay attention. One man’s steak is another man’s , I don’t know, cottage cheese, but the point is many if not most people, sadly, turn on the tv to be numbed out, not encouraged to think.

  76. cesarrr says:

    Caro
That’s exactly my point, if you were born in the US, your first language shouldn’t be spanish.
And I know for sure that MOST people who watch UNI don’t understand english, you are one of the few exceptions.
And yes, being an american has a lot to do, because the NIELSEN numbers should represent the american viewing habits.

  77. Nick C says:

and LIFE was picked up for a full season.

  78. Mel says:

Yaaay!! Life was picked up for the rest of the season!! It seems building on KR was enough of a good thing for NBC to order the back nine.

  79. Julia says:

I don’t get it. Both Life and Knight Rider get a lot worse ratings and key demos than Eli Stone. Yet, both shows were picked up for a full season just recently. And there is still no news on Eli Stone. Why did NBC pick up those two shows?

  80. Julia — I think Life got some slack because some of its performance was on Friday nights where the expectations are low. My guesses on why NBC picked up those shows is that NBC’s overall average (especially minus Sunday Night Football) is lower than ABC’s, and NBC doesn’t appear to have had as many shows “on the bench” where ABC has many. Also, Knight Rider does well with young men and the whole show is basically a product placement for Ford, though I have no idea how much money NBC makes from that.
