At a glance of the early metered market numbers, last night’s results look a whole lot like the previous week’s Thursday early metered market numbers though everything was down a bit. Perhaps the fourteen people who have the NFL network (plus fans in the local Cleveland and Denver markets, where it would’ve aired on one of the local stations) watched Brady Quinn’s debut in the season launch of NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football.
Survivor had a 7.0/11 (household rating/share). Last week it had a 6.9/11 in the early numbers. CSI was down a bit week over week – last night it had an 11.1/17, last week it had an 11.8/18. With a 7.3/13 last night, Eleventh Hour was also down versus last week’s 8.1/13.
Over on ABC Ugly Betty with a 6.6/10 improved over last week’s 6.3/11. But at a 9.5/15, Grey’s Anatomy was down versus last week’s 9.9/15. Life on Mars seems to have stabilized with a 5.8/10 versus last week’s 5.8/9.
30 Rock’s early season success continued. Oprah’s appearance on the show drew a 5.1/8, last week’s season premiere had a 5.3/8 in the early numbers and wound up being the series all-time high. The Office, My Name is Earl and Kath & Kim were all around last week’s levels, though down slightly. Smallville and Supernatural were both down a little versus last week’s early numbers.
Over on Fox, the repeat/new episode combo of two hours worth of Kitchen Nightmares actually improved vs last week. It had a 3.3/5 between 8p-10p compared to last week’s 2.7/4.
We’ll post the full viewer and demo numbers when the fast affiliates are available, but in the meanwhile you can check out the full early metered market report via Marc Berman.
Metered Market Overnight Ratings: This is normally the first available ratings information, and is based on the electronic measurement service that Nielsen provides in 56 of the nation’s largest markets. In each market a sample of homes is selected to represent that individual market. Often, networks or syndicators provide metered market information as an early indicator of a program’s performance. In aggregate, the 56 metered markets represent 79,890,610 homes, or 70% of all U.S. TV households. Preliminary metered market data are available as early as 8:00AM (ET). Final metered market information, reflecting line-up changes, pre-emptions and runovers, are normally available by 3:30PM (ET).

Hey now, are you being sarcastic with that “fourteen people who have the NFL network” comment? Or is that how many actual Nielsen families have NFLN
? Nielsen does tend to skew slightly away from high-end-package digital cable and satellite subscribers.
NBC can enjoy their 30 Rock’s success as for now but ABC still has more viewers with their 3 thursday shows.
Ugly Betty is getting high every week I’m so happy
ABCFanatic, NBC isn’t trying to beat ABC’s viewers. They are just trying to stay competitive, and they are succeeding, particularly in the demos.
The NFL Network is a ripoff. If the NFL thinks I’m paying to see all of 7 or 8 games (which usually aren’t very good) a year, they’re out of their mind. Playing games in London is just as stupid.
Is 30 Rock still living on “Fey/Palin” afterglow or was last night an indication of the power of the Oprah-verse? Next week’s 30 Rock numbers will be an interesting indicator.
smallville???????????????????????????????????????
smallville 4.81!!!!!!!!! wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
I think the Palin effect gave Fey a much needed boost into the mainstream consciousness. I know I was indifferent about Fey during and after her time on SNL and only happened upon 30 Rock by accident. I think there’s a chance the Palin publicity actually made people more aware of her type of comedy and maybe they’ll stick around after having tried out 30 Rock because of Fey as Palin. Also, they have some pretty stunt castings this year… although admittedly none as huge as media titan Oprah.
As for Smallville, did anyone else tear up a bit when he was reaching for Kara’s hand before leaving the zone? That was some emotional stuff…
Oh and props to Supernatural, toes the line between serious/brooding and campy/funny/cheesy better than any show.
hey
