Fans Await Decisions On Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Dirty Sexy Money

Posted on 11 November 2008 by Bill Gorman

The Renew or Cancel Index is updated on a weekly basis, if you’re reading this after November 18, 2008 click here to see the latest list.

Three ABC shows, Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money, and NBC’s Lipstick Jungle continue to await the final mid-season verdicts from their network masters. A version of ABC’s winter schedule that was reportedly given to advertisers has been leaked online showing Eli Stone surviving, but Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money cancelled11/14 Update: Yet another ABC schedule has leaked online, different that the first one, although it’s likely both are legitimate and ABC simply keeps shuffling shows. The latest schedule shows Eli Stone surviving, but Pushing DaisiesDirty Sexy Money *and* Life on Mars cancelled,  but there is still no confirmation from ABC as I write this. All other shows seem safe to survive until May.

11/12 Update: My Own Worst Enemy and Lipstick Jungle have both been cancelled by NBC. Lipstick Jungle being cancelled is a surprise to no one, but the My Own Worst Enemy cancellation at mid-season is a surprise to me. Particularly with all the professional reputation capital Ben Silverman at NBC seemed to have riding on the show. It hadn’t done well, but it certainly hadn’t done dreadfully.

Last week, perhaps liking what it saw in its first Wednesday outing, NBC ordered a full season of Life. Assuming that NBC has given it a clean slate on Wednesday, I am now including only its Wednesday 18-49 season to date average in the calculations for the Index. And because of the order and it’s new Index value I have changed its color coding from Cancellation by January to Cancellation by May

The Indexes for Fox shows less distortion this week from the World Series which has temporarily boosted Fox’s 18-49 average, that will continue to sort itself out over the coming weeks. No need to panic *yet* for Fox shows with low Index numbers.

Plenty can change before the end of the season, particularly for the shows closest to last season’s renewal line of 0.92. The list is presented in a (and has to be, since I cannot predict future ratings) “what would happen if the season ended today” mode. Could the renewal line be 0.86 this season? Possibly. It might also be 0.95. Might it be 0.70? No chance.

While the Renew / Cancel index is most geared toward predicting potential renewal for *next* season, my color coding of the shows are guesses on what might happen this season: Cancellation by January, Cancellation by May, or Renewal Likely for 2009-10

The Renew/Cancel Index is a show’s Season To Date adults 18-49 viewership divided by its networks Season to Date average 18-49 viewership. Note: Only shows that have premiered during the 2008-9 broadcast season are on this list.

(1) CW MRC Sunday – The CW has leased its entire Sunday night to Media Rights Capital (MRC). Easy Money and Valentine have been cancelled. It is reported that MRC has the right (obligation?) to program Sunday nights throughout 2008-9 on the CW. What will they do next? Stay tuned.

(2) Friday night – Friday is quickly becoming an 18-49 wasteland, so these shows may be allowed a lower threshold for success than shows on other nights. My grading technique on shows with histories on Friday (only Numb3rs and Ghost Whisperer) is that until they reach their Index values from last season they still are at risk of non-renewal. BTW, Numb3rs Index was 0.76 last year, so it’s almost there.

(3) New Advs of Old Christine: Perhaps CBS is willing to accept low numbers in its new timeslot indefinitely to build a new “comedy block”. Perhaps CBS will return Christine to the warmth and safety of Monday night and cut Worst Week or Gary Unmarried loose. And perhaps not.

(4) Life moved to Wednesday beginning November 5. This is its Wednesday only STD 18-49 average as calculated by me. For past reference, the 4 Life episodes that aired on Fridays averaged 2.043 million adults 18-49.

(5) Prison Break. Evidence that this is the final season for the show is mounting.

How did we come up with our list? We found that last season, the future of a show was nearly directly related to its adults 18-49 average viewers divided by its networks 18-49 average viewers. Many other factors may matter, but they all seemed to boil down to that one number. Because American Idol so skewed Fox’s 18-49 average, and would make nearly all Fox shows fall into the “cancel” range, for Fox, I used the last STD 18-49 average *before* Idol. Last season, if a show had better than 92% of its network’s average 18-49 viewership (0.92 in our index) it was pretty safe, below that level it was in danger. We’re not sure what the magic number will be this season, but I’m very confident that our index will still indicate the shows most likely to be cancelled compared to those less likely to be cancelled.

—————————————————————-
For unscripted shows, the results from last season were far less cut and dried. A similar relationship did seem to hold between 18-49 averages, but some unscripted shows survived with very low numbers. My conclusion was that some unscripted shows must be so cheap that they are expected to do little more than fill air time and produce little in the way of viewership. However the closer a show is to the top of the list the more danger it’s in of being cancelled or not returning when it’s run is completed. Other shows can be judged by their relative position on our list ranked from most likely to be cancelled to least likely to be cancelled.

  1. Mark Z says:

for what week is this index made for? i thought it ws for 3-9 november, but ther was no chuck on 3rd november so what episode is listed here?

  2. Bill Gorman says:

Mark all the numbers above are season to date averages through November 9, so every show with at least one regular airing during the 2008-9 season is listed.

  3. DaisiesDeathKnell says:

Pushing Daisies is absolutely safe. 60% is passing in American high schools. It airs on the AMERICAN Broadcasting Company, so it should be good to go.

  4. Nick C says:

There is a lot of talk in the industry right now about “Seasonal,” schedules. Certain people are pointing to the success of USA’s schedule. Where shows aren’t even repeated but replaced until the next season comes along.

I know ABC and NBC are both thinking about this. FOX has been doing it for awhile with PRISON BREAK. It airs in the Fall, goes on hiatus and returns in the Spring.

I’m not sure this really works for all types of shows. I think it is fine with a procedural but serial shows don’t really work for it.

  5. remembering games and daisy chains and laughs…

  6. Nick C says:

DDK, passing is 70% in AMERICAN High Schools. Just thought you’d like to know.

  7. Julia says:

Actually, it’s 66%. 65% and below is failing. So PD just makes it! ;)

  8. Nick C says:

Perhaps it depends on the state you live in.

  9. Tony S says:

Will the networks really cancel that many shows?

  10. Phillip says:

I know, picky, but shouldn’t Biggest Loser down in next section?

  11. Craig S says:

I guess it really is a tossup for ABC between Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, and Dirty Sexy Money. I think Stone is from Greg Berlanti of Brothers&Sisters, I wonder if that would tip the scales for the network to save that show over the other two if they were going to keep one of these three for the rest of the season. If ABC has enough ready to go in January though, all 3 could be gone, but I do still think one will get a chance to last until May. Poor Life, gets full season order, then will have to go against Criminal Minds, LOST, and Lie To Me beginning in January. Life won’t get lead-in help from Knight Rider since that will be directly against Idol if NBC’s schedule stays as is. It’s definitely shaping up to be an interesting second half of the tv season.

  12. Craig, Dirty Sexy Money is from Berlanti too.

    Daisies is toast.

  13. Kim Cullen says:

I was thinking the same thing about biggest loser..

    All I care about is
    1) Private Practice is back in the safe zone
    2) Eli Stone stands a chance of finishing the year

  14. Matt says:

A 60% is passing around here. But that’s out of 100%. Greys is clocking in 201%, DH at 194%… I was never able to get a 201% on a test.

  15. Bill Gorman says:

Phillip, indeed Biggest Loser should be. I will move it.

  16. Craig S says:

Thanks Robert, I knew there was another show, I forgot it was Dirty Sexy Money!! So when a network is in this situation where it seems one show will stay and the other go but both from same creator/studio, does the creator have any more say in which one gets to stay?? Just curious if Berlanti could sway ABC one way or the other to stick with Money or Stone.

  17. tom says:

where can one read the abc leaked schedule?

  18. Cool says:

    Tom, on Thefutoncritic.com

  19. Caio says:

I was just checking abcmedianet.com,and I saw PD´s episodes of the 19th and the 26th are on the schedule.Does it mean only these two more are being a\ired?
    Thanks

  20. Rachel P says:

Warning: Red alert in the title bar of my web browser window.
    “ushing Daisies” ? :P

  21. S. says:

Tom you cab find ABC’s leaked schedule here
    http://thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=7841

and the complete winter guide here
    http://www.thefutoncritic.com/guide.aspx?id=winter_2009

  22. Dave says:

Unfortunately, Old Christine took a couple steps in the wrong direction, but hopefully, Dancing moving back to its usual slop, it will go back to its normal numbers.

  23. Rob says:

pushing daisies i the most likely of the three to go now based on performance but because between PD, ELI and DSM there is one thing that separates them all. PD being a WB production and ELI and DSM being ABC studios productions.

  24. anna says:

Maybe it’s just me because I dont really know how all the number work, but why is Ugly Betty and Samantha Who? not safe? I thought they were getting better?

Do you think Ugly Betty and Samantha Who? have a good chance of being renewed for another season?

    Im worried about those two!

  25. maahem says:

I was wondering too why Ugly Betty isnt getting in the safe zone…It’s always the #1 comedy on Thursdays in it’s timeslot and is only beaten by Survivor. And I was reading on the futon critic that it’s last episode was really good numbers wise – it was the #1 in teens and #1 in women for the 7th week in a row.
    Will it be cancelled?

  26. Rob says:

what also hurts PD, ELI, and DSM is how much greys and DH skew the averages up. if you take out those two out of the averages and only use the other shows all 3 are closer to the .92 though still not at it.

  27. Nick C says:

What hurts PD more than anything is that it’s the worst rated scripted show on ABC. You can say the higher shows skew it all you want but the bottom line is that it’s the least watched scripted show on ABC. It even gets beat by Knight Rider.

  28. Ben says:

How come, all things being equal, in house productions are safer than external productions? DVD sale profits, additional fees?

  29. Rachel P says:

How are you able to track DVD sales for TV shows anyway? Is there a site?

  30. Cool says:

I also think Ugly Betty should be save. Second in 18-49 and viewers and last week beat Survivor in 18-34.

  31. Bill Gorman says:

Worried Ugly Betty fans (and others) as I note in the post, for shows near the cancel/renew Index line of 0.92 so much television remains that worrying about them now is pointless. In late April I’ll do some much more detailed posts on all the shows “on the bubble” and then you can max out your worrying.

As to why Betty, and any other shows are not in the “green” zone. Their 18-49 season to date average is more than 8% below their network’s average. Last year almost all of such shows in that zone in May were cancelled.

  32. maahem says:

    ^^^Thanks Bill!
But do you personally think Ugly Betty will be cancelled?

  33. Dan says:

Ugly Betty, Chuck, and Samantha Who? will more than likely be renewed for 2009-10. Because Chuck is doing OK and is one of the only decently performing scripted shows on NBC. Ugly Betty is doing OK and is likely to be renewed as is ABCs only comedy Samantha Who? Again why is My Own Worst Enemy on the renewal list?

  34. Julia says:

So ABC’s official schedule will be released soon, right? Maybe even in a few days? How accurate do you think the leaked schedule is? It would be amazing if Eli Stone gets a full season pick up.

  35. Alde says:

Yeah, definitely couldn’t agree more, Julia.

  36. Yujin says:

ABC only got itself to blame for all the bad rating cause it didn’t get the shows back on air after the strike. Twist and turn it how ever the executives want to, it was a bad move on their part. PD is a great show. It just suck that it is so affected by ABC bad move.

  37. Cool says:

I hope DSM, PD and Eli will be canceled.

  38. Julia says:

Dan, MOWE is skewed by its first episode. It only has 3 episodes included in this list, one of which did well.

  39. dirtysexyj says:

My stomach churns, I feel for my cast and crew. The wait, the rumor, the angst..

This is really a difficult time.

No matter what the schedule seems clear a bunch of people will be losing jobs once again just prior to Christmas.

We will fight on, and I am certain our producers are fighting to keep the show alive.

    Makers Mark here we come

  40. Nick C says:

Wow LIFE saw a huge jump. Does this include Fridays and the Monday airing?

  41. as per the text above (third paragraph) it only includes…Wednesday

  42. dirtysexyj says:

Thanks for the index Mr. Gorman sorry I was so emotional ,

I guess the thought of losing your j o b may have a tendancy to effect your ability to reason.

If DSM survives I will not say nah nah nah naaa naaa na.. Thanks for the list and all the time it must take to reconsile.

  43. dirtysexyj says:

dam I cannot spell worth a darn

  44. Nick C says:

Robert, that will teach me to learn to read what you guys write vs just looking at the numbers! Maybe you could provide both numbers (an overall and a Wednesday only) just for the info?

  45. Bill Gorman says:

Nick, I will add the final Friday only 18-49 average in the footnote for Life. It will remain on future posts.

  46. Thunder Mountain says:

They should have a special TV event and use a guillotine as they announced the fate of each show. If a show gets an extention, the hooded execution would put a piece of wood in to stop the blade. Otherise the head (head of iceberg lettuce with the shows name in big red letters) drops into the basket.

  47. Birv says:

I never thought I would live to see a time where I hated Scrubs. But if it replaces PD, I will be forced. It had 8 seasons in the sun, let’s move on.

  48. Chris the TV sage says:

I thought I was tired of Scrubs, but I’ll gladly watch whatever replaced PD. :)

  49. Fin says:

Everyone says Heroes is loosing money every episode but if American Dad at its place commands $156,000 a 30-second advert then why not Heroes. But even if Heroes had the same command (which i doubt it does) its would still make like 500,000- 1,000,000 dollars surely.

  50. Fin says:

as it has a 4mil budget

  51. Fin says:

Why did ABC keep Eli Stone (if they did) ?

  52. Nick C says:

Fin, for one HEROES isn’t losing money, it’s just not making the money it SHOULD be making.

  53. josh says:

wow! i really dont think there is a chance that ABC will axe all 3 shows!

is there any chance that a cable channel could pick up one of them? PD is the main one as it is more ‘cult’ and viewers are more likely to follow it??

  54. Riff Rafferty says:

Yujin, the ratings for the most recent episode of “Pushing Daisies” were on par with its season finale last year. 4 million viewers bailed within a month of its premiere. How is that ABC’s fault?

ABC’s decision to not bring back their Wednesday shows last spring hurt “Private Practice,” not “Daisies.” Mind you, other things have hurt “Private Practice.” Its terrible lead-in, for instance…

  55. Andrea says:

According to Variety, “Privileged” got renewed.

  56. Andrea, it did not get renewed, but it got an order of 5 more episodes (bringing it to 18, but not 22)

  57. Nick C says:

    MOWE and LSJ are canceled.

  58. Nick C says:

PD is definitely done, but not sure if DSM or ES are canned. Could be all 3 (should be).

  59. Nick C says:

and a link for the NBC shows:

    http://www.thrfeed.com/

One of them should be reporting on ABC very shortly too.

  60. Alan says:

Nick- your daily Daisies hatred is growing tiresome. We get it, man- you think the show is done, cancelled, dead, gone, six feet under, not coming back, sh*t-canned, not worth saving, blah, blah, blah.

    Next up?

  61. Nick C says:

Alan, but word is it’s official now. So just as I heard LSJ and MOWE were “officially,” done, we should have a link soon.

  62. Alan says:

“Word is it’s official” from whom? And why are you so invested in a breathless daily update on the show’s probable fate? I feel bad for those folks over at PD. It was a good show.

  63. Nick C says:

Alan, I heard it from people who would know. I haven’t had a chance to talk directly to anyone about it at ABC. That is why I don’t know if both DSM and ES are both joining PD or just one or neither. Don’t feel bad for the people at PD the fast they know the better.

  64. Julia says:

Nick, any idea if they will air the remaining episodes?

  65. Cool says:

when is the Midseason schedule for ABC is releasing?

  66. Nick C says:

Julia, I’m going to guess “no,” at least not all of them. I believe 8 haven’t aired.

  67. Nick C says:

Cool, I’d guess next week or the end of this week, same with NBC.

  68. fancastfan says:

Hey, your readers who are Pushing Daisies fans might be interested to know there is an exclusive interview that just went up on Fancast with Bryan Fuller and he says he would uo to make a Pushing Daisies movie or comic book and also touches on the possibility of changing networks (like Scrubs did). The interview is at http://thebiz.fancast.com/2008/11/a_pushing_daisies_movie.html
They are also looking for comments on whether fans would watch a movie and how you feel about so many plot lines being left unfinished if it is the end.

  69. nedlovesme says:

yes i will…i would watch that movie :P

  70. Lynxie says:

Eli Stone is an awesome show! Superb cast, beautifully filmed and each and every episode makes me feel damn good about life! There is nothing like it on the air. Please, please, ABC keep Eli Stone ALIVE!!!!!

  71. Nick C says:

PD could probably get a direct to video movie made. No way they could get a real movie made, but they probably could get a DtV movie made.

  72. Gusar says:

Privileged got more than just 5 script orders.
“On Dec. 1 and 8, Privileged will air behind original episodes of Gossip Girl, replacing previously scheduled One Tree Hill repeats. Those two Privileged eps will then be rebroadcast in the show’s usual time slot, Tuesdays at 9 pm.” – http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2008/11/breaking-the-cw.html

All I can say is “Yay!” Hopefully this will boost viewership and bring Privileged a full season pick-up.

  73. Julia says:

Nick C, any new info yet on Eli Stone or Dirty Sexy Money from your ABC sources? Which show do you think they might keep? Eli Stone is one of my favorite shows.

  74. nedlovesme says:

why the hell couldn’t they get a freaking tv movie made? please, you’re pessimism about PD is just so… so… so… why the hell can they not make a god damn movie ?

if there’s no season pcik up, i say yes to a movie.

  75. nedlovesme says:

oh crap that was wrong, what i meant was why can’t they get a freaking movie (not tv movie, but real movie ) made?

  76. Johnthemon says:

about MOWE, I’m really surprised it’s been pulled early. I guess it was just too expensive…maybe Heroes will be canceled by Season’s end.

  77. lisaw says:

I’m no expert on statistics nor American viewing figures but there seems something suspicious about the 18-49 viewing figures for CBS quoted in C/R index of Nov 04 unless I’m wrong in assuming that the figure is based on the Season average to date.

Obviously figures will fluctuate from week to week but the further into a Season you go there is likely to be lesser influence on the average.

For the first five weeks the 18-49 demos for CBS fluctuated bewtween 4.18m and 4.06m. Then in week 6 it plummeted to 3.71m but this week is back up to 4.04om.

Wouldn’t this mean that the total bewteen weeks 5 and 6 went up only about 1.62m while those between weeks 6 and 7 went up by 6.02m? (Yes 6 million.)

Such fluctuations would surely have led to a furore if correct?

Maybe I am totally misunderstanding how things work but methinks that the figure given for 04 november must be wrong.

  78. DaisiesDeathKnell says:

MOWE’s cancellation actually makes sense for a numbers perspective. It’s OVERALL only at last year’s renewal line. If you disregard the early episodes and just focus on the last few, then it’s well below the line to be renewed. A show like Kath & Kim has been much steadier, less fluctuation. Why would anyone keep a show that’s currently performing below average and continuing to lose viewers every week?

In this case, it’s a surprise because we weren’t factoring out the premiere ratings.

  79. Daisies, I agree, and though I have tried to hammer that point home, it is at times like banging my head against the wall. The index is unreliable in that instance *especially* in cases where there have been but a few airings though over time it would have still sorted itself out. But, there wasn’t enough time…

I’m surprised more because I’d heard NBC was going to be patient with MOWE, plus as recently as Monday it promoted it as the new hit and Christian Slater in the role everyone is talking about.

  80. Bill Gorman says:

lisaw, thanks for catching my error, you are correct, I had some bad network STD numbers in the chart in week 6. They have now been corrected.

  81. Bill Gorman says:

DDK, I’m completely with you if the decision to cancel MOWE came in April, but that the decision came for January was a surprise to me.

  82. Nick C says:

nedlovesme, the problem here is you LOVE the show. I don’t. I don’t hate it either. I just see the numbers. You see a show you love. Take a look at how certain people in the Media report on the show. Some say things like “PD has horrible ratings,” which is entirely true. Then you have Hercules over at AICN who reports:

” “Daisies” ratings have rebounded a bit of late. And so many shows are floundering over at ABC the network may be contemplating leaving “Daisies” on Wednesdays as a lead-in to “Lost” when the latter returns in January. ”

This is nearly entirely false. There is no show doing worse than PD. A Rebound would imply that it’s ratings improved to a previous status. They did not. The only truth in the statement is that “many shows are floundering at ABC,” and PD is the least watched of the bunch. It is also not an internal show, ABC Studios is not behind it. So why would ABC contemplate leaving a show produced by someone else when they have ABC Studio shows with better ratings in the mix?

What you have here are fans and people who aren’t fans who just see the obvious. The ratings for PD are the worst on ABC for a scripted show. There is nothing that can change that fact. People can argue about the quality of the show all they want. It is also expensive to make. It’s more expensive than Eli Stone for instance.

You see my statements of PD making direct to video as a put down. The facts are that PD does not have the numbers to justify a full feature film. A DtV could be made for $2M to $4M. A full feature would cost about $12M to $20M being extremely frugal. PD doesn’t have the pull for that.

Look at FIREFLY. It had less viewers (about 4.5M) than PD. However it had HUGE DVD sales. PD DVD sales are below average for a currently running TV series. It was the DVD success of FIREFLY that got the movie green lit. It was DVD sales that made SERENITY a financial profit.

PD can likely get a DtV movie greenlit. It can’t get a real movie green lit. ABC won’t green light a TV Movie because the show just didn’t do well enough to justify it. The advertisers aren’t interested.

I’m just reporting what I hear on here and my opinion on what makes sense. Fans should be happy if a canceled show gets a Direct to Video release that helps close a story line. If the DtV does well, you may see more. You could end up getting one a year at least for a few years.

  83. Nick C says:

    http://www.thrfeed.com/2008/11/pushing-daisies.html

There you go a media report on the news that there is still no news, but that industry sources say it won’t be picked up.

  84. Bill Gorman says:

Nick, we have heard similar “nobody has told us we’re cancelled” from folks working on other shows as well. My guess is that it’s exactly that, nobody has *told* them, and they just want to get episode 13 in the can.

  85. Nick C says:

Bill, they’ve been told. They just haven’t “officially,” been told. All 3 shows in question are fighting hard, and it sounds like one is staying. Fuller even mentions “we have heard nothing in any official capacity,” and that is true. They have been told that no new episodes would be picked up.

I was told it would all be official some time this week last week. So I’m guessing today or tomorrow.

  86. Nick C says:

I forget which one of you razzed on Littleton’s report on MOWE for its Nielsen error, but Hibberd has an error in his PD report. His “average,” for the season is entirely messed up. The season average is 6.0 Million viewers and a 2.0 in the 18-49.

  87. Nick, it was me. Not that it matters, but i felt in an article announcing the show was cancelled not using the more recent data was a bad way to go. I still think that. As for Hibberd, it could be they are feeding him a steady diet of “Most Current” though I did not bother to check to see if that is the case (I figure Daisies will be cancelled either way, so why bother?).

I see some of the networks throwing “Most Current” about now. It’s not Live+SD or Live+7 but a hybrid between the two (live+7 data wherever available, Live+SD where it isn’t).

  88. Julia says:

Bill, I think you are looking too closely at the index, instead of the trend, like everyone else is saying. The final 18-49 rating for the episodes were:

    3.0
    2.5
    2.3
    1.8

Even without the first episode, the show would probably still be in the safe till May zone for the current chart, but I don’t think anyone, even NBC, sees a 1.8 as acceptable, especially when coming out of a 3.6.

  89. Nick C says:

Robert, that would be the “Most Current,” but that data is pointless. Live + SD is closer to C3 so thus more important. If you guys used Most Current for your Index for instance it would skew things.

  90. Nick, I agree, but it’s pointless data that the networks put out in their marketing. And I could definitely see why the people working on PD would rather use it than live+SD. Again, I don’t know if that’s the case with Hibberd/PD, I didn’t bother logging on to the Nielsen site (it makes molasses seem speedy) to download the “Most Current” s-t-d numbers

  91. Cool says:

    Pushing Daisies wrapping production today
    http://www.thrfeed.com/

  92. Nick C says:

Media outlets are starting to report that no new episodes will be purchased for PD. Some are starting to wonder if this means ABC will go “seasonal,” and have PD become a Fall Only show. I’ve heard that rumor, and it’s a legit rumor. I just don’t think ABC is going to do it. That is the “fight,” that Fuller alluded to.

  93. Julia says:

I’m not sure why ABC would do that, at least with PD. Taking it off the air for nine months did enough damage once, I can only imagine how horrible the ratings would look next fall. Love the show, and hope I get to see the episodes that are in the can, but put it out of its misery already.

  94. Bill Gorman says:

What I don’t understand about this entire process is what ABC (or any network) gains from there being uncertainty about their shows in the marketplace. How is it to their benefit to have rumors like this swirling about? It just seems to set them up for PR black eyes when the truth is out. Why not just get the truth out sooner?
Or is it a matter of any press is good press? Better to have your shows potential demise talked about even if it’s a goner? If they are consciously playing that game (instead of just being indecisive) they deserve whatever fan backlash they get.

  95. “Call me anything as long as you call me…” It’s just Hollywood, baby! though the amount of decision making power New York wields over Hollywood when it comes to TV is far greater than I realized when we first started this blog…

  96. Nick C says:

Julia, ABC is looking at other models that cable networks have used. The hope here would be more Emmy nods and DVD sales before next Fall. It would be an expensive alternative. They would have to pay the talent to not go get a job elsewhere.

  97. Nick C says:

ABC doesn’t have a policy of “canceling,” shows. They just tell you “we won’t be ordering any more.” That has been policy. Even that game show they “canceled,” wasn’t “canceled.” So news that the show won’t be picked up for more episodes may be the best you get.

  98. Caio says:

I have a question about money.

I´m gonna use PD as an example because it´s truthfully the only show I really care about, but this goes for tv in general.

I know that PD was promoted in numerous countries worldwide,ABC/Warner(I don´t know which one),had Lee Pace,as the lead in the show, travel a lot and talk about the show between seasons, during the strike.By that I infer that a significant amount of money is made by someone when a show is watched overseas.

My doubt is how (in)significant that amount is,if all that counts when it comes to keeping shows on air or pulling them are Nielsen ratings?

Or is money only a part of it?

    Thank You

  99. Julia says:

Caio, shows can be lucrative overseas, but the cost to produce those shows to sell overseas needs to be covered by advertisers here in the States. It’s possible that a show could be a number one hit in other countries, but if it can’t survive in the present over here, it’s not likely to be continued.

  100. Bill Gorman says:

My guess is that the money made outside the US is icing on the cake for US produced shows. I guess it could make the difference for a marginal show, but that would be a strange situation where a show was marginal in the US, but a bit hit overseas. Baywatch maybe?

What I’d take issue with is your assumption that sending a star and a press team around for a talking junket indicates lots of money being made outside the US. Press trips are cheap, incredibly cheap, compared to just about anything in the TV world. They probably represent good return on investment, but not likely an indication of huge overseas revenues.

  101. Caio says:

Well,Mr Gorman, like I said many times before,I know nothing of this industry,so forgive any wrong assumptions.I was simply wondering why spend this money if revenues aren´t so big,but if the investment is as low as you say,I have my answer.

  102. Nick C says:

It is extremely rare for a show to do exceptionally well over seas and not do well in the states. BAYWATCH was a good example, but it did extremely well here in syndication. The only show I can think of that is doing better over seas than here is HEROES right now. Then again maybe even the Japanese market will ignore this horrible season.

  103. Bill Gorman says:

You say manufactured drama, I say “Keep Hope Alive!”

Well, no, I don’t say that, but someone will soon, I’m sure ;)

  104. worth the read – Tim Goodman’s take on the broadcast nets’ fall season:

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/11/13/DDVF143S6E.DTL

  105. Riff Rafferty says:

“In this case, it’s a surprise because we weren’t factoring out the premiere ratings.”

To anyone who was aware of the show’s price tag or Jason Smilovic’s track record, it was no surprise. NBC canned his first show for them after 2 broadcasts and pulled it completely after 5. Huge budget + 4 share x disastrous lead-in retention / massive incongruity between expectations and performance = fast cancellation. That’s the way it’s always been.

The surprise is that it (and “Lipstick Jungle”) will continue to run in burn-off mode. And it’s a pleasant one. Not to mention one you certainly didn’t get from CBS, ABC and FOX this fall…

  106. dirtysexyj says:

funny MOWE was shooting tonight on NY STREET.

The article states “Production halted” that sure looked like Mr. Slater to me

  107. marty94122 says:

I know that last season Variety reported DSM was highly rated among affluent viewers. That has sometimes, but not always, helped keep a show on the air, since some advertisers do market specifically to that group and it can also be lucrative for product placement deals. I haven’t seen anything one way or the other this season as to whether DSM was still doing well in that group. Any word on that?

  108. S. says:

The plot thickens. The latest rumor is that according to information on ABC Stage Pass(advertisers site) LoM is gone from the winter schedule, along with PD, and DSM. Can anyone confirm this?

  109. Jack says:

OMG I have shows that I am worried about. Life, Chuck, Life on Mars and Crusoe. But what i about Crusoe, it says 13 ep mini series, what does that mean…?

  110. Bill Gorman says:

Jack, that means it’s a 13 episode mini series and then its over. Because of that I think it’s very unlikely that NBC pulls it before it finishes the 13 episodes, hence its orange (instead of red) color coding.

  111. R.G. says:

All 3 shows; Dirty, Pushing & Eli ALL look boring…I don’t watch any of them…take all 3 off the air…good riddens – I’m tired of the promos they run…

…in fact I just realized all my shows and future shows to come (24 & DOLLHOUSE) are all on FOX & CBS…oh & SMALLVILLE on CW…

so NBC & ABC can go bye bye…Those 2 networks run the same stupid shows…YAWN!
Although so does CW but – let’s be honest – their not really a network…

  112. marty118 says:

With regard to made for TV movies vs Direct to Video movies vs theatrical releases…a made for TV movie is aimed at exactly the same audience as a regular series, in a very similar format, because it’s going to be interrupted by and supported by commercials.

Made for TV movies are normally for shows that ARE successful in the regular format, but that, for one reason or another, can’t be made in that format any more. Matlock was a prime example. The star didn’t feel physically up to regular episodes. Or a star may become unavailable for regular series work. Or, rarely, the business model for a show with high ratings and high production costs may make better sense as a movie that can be sold immediately on DVD. But a show that wasn’t drawing viewers as a series isn’t a good candidate for a new made for television movie.

Pushing Daisies might do exactly the same thing as Firefly, of course. Take your existing content, put it on DVD, find out if it can find a whole new audience that way. Many Firefly fans never saw it on television. I can see the Variety headling: “PD Blossoms on DVD.” Heh.

IF that happens it will be a surprise, as it was with Firefly, but it’s a surprise that would change the business calculations on a DtV or even a theatrical release. No one’s going to take bets on that one in advance, though. Even the Serenity experience mostly proved that people who would buy a television show on DVD would buy a movie about the same characters on DVD.

  113. Cool says:

So when the midseason schedule of ABC is coming? The abcmedianet has one but I dont think that’s real

  114. Cool, it will be announced when it’s announced. I imagine that will be soon.

  115. Bill Gorman says:

I had not thought to look at the abcmedianet.com schedule. It’s “real” in that it was obviously posted by ABC on their own press site. Whether it is *final* or not is the real question.

  116. Nick C says:

marty118, well PD has not sold well on DVD as of yet. FIREFLY sold well right from the start. In fact it is STILL a steady seller.

Cool, abcmedianet posts an updated schedule once a month. It is real for when it was posted. We should get an actual press release soon.

  117. Roland says:

R.G. – How can you say shows look boring and good riddance when you don’t even watch them? You can’t really have an opinion about shows when you haven’t actually watched them.

  118. GRD says:

Why would Abcmedianet post a schedule that wasn’t real?

  119. why do people post comments about something completely irrelevant to this discussion? ABC posts a month of schedule grid in advance. As Nick stated, it’s correct at the time they posted it, but networks make changes all the time. And all this has absolutely NOTHING to do with whether PD, DSM and ES get picked up for the winter….

  120. Cool says:

maybe because when the schedule is revealed, we will know if PD, DSM and Eli are getting canceled.

  121. Cool, the key words there are “when the schedule is revealed”, which it hasn’t been. when that happens you won’t have any doubt at all because 14,341 blogs will write about it and you’ll be well aware of it.

  122. Rachel P says:

Speaking of Firefly, I just rented and watched the full series for the first time this week. Now I see why so many people like it. It had some really excellent episodes. And Summer Glau’s awesome, of course.

  123. Bill Gorman says:

Rachel, I agree completely. I missed Firefly on TV, saw it and Serenity on DVD and loved it. I could have been a Whedonite!

  124. GRD says:

Oh, I get it. Sorry. Didn’t mean to be irrelevant.

  125. Cool says:

I’m sorry Robert, I wasnt trying to be rude but I understand you.

  126. Rob says:

I jut have a gut feeling that ABC is going to wait to announce the schedule for mid-season for thursday once the wednesday numbers are in and Daisies puts up a bad number after the 2 week lay off. As a fan, it doesn’t get to me the show would get canceled due to ratings though i wish it had a concrete ending. I just thought a good scenario for ABC and Daisies would of been to order 6 episodes of Daisies to be made now to finish the story but instead of airing it on ABC to air them on ABC Family as a weekend special in like May. Just seemed to make sense to me now i don’t know the logistics of it could have worked but in my brain it seemed like a decent solution.

  127. Nick C says:

Rob, the show is too expensive. What would the chances be that anyone would tune in to ABC Family to watch? They aren’t good let me tell you.

ABC already made their decision. There will be no new orders for PD. That to me is canceled, but there are others out there who think it means hope.

  128. Rob says:

Nick C, understand my notion was more of a dream scenario that worked in my head. Approximately 6 mil viewers it low for the network but to get something close to that for an event weekend seemed like an interesting notion as promotion for a cable channel that is under the ABC umbrella and could use to advertise other shows on the ABC Family network.

  129. Nick C says:

Rob, but the people won’t turn on ABC FAMILY to watch it. I’m always amused when people say things like “if this show was on X cable network with those numbers it would be a hit!” The problem is if it was on X cable network it would have worse numbers.

  130. Rob says:

but i’m not saying it would have better numbers but the idea that some percentage of fans who want to see closure for a show is an intriguing idea. I do mention the idea of it being a series on the network or anything but ABC Family has a history of airing weekend events like “Fallen” (which is the only one i remember by name) that they would air 2 hours on friday, 2 on saturday, and 2 on sunday while also repeating the prior 2 hours before each airing of the new hour. Under that premise PD could not saying would or should but could posibbly put up a decent number for a one weekend run off.

  131. Julia says:

I’m one of those people who watched Firefly on DVD and said “What was all the fuss about?” But then, I watched almost all of Buffy just to figure out what the fuss was and didn’t get it. Whedon is somewhat entertaining, but nothing amazing in my view. Different strokes.

Rob, I think what you should be hoping for at this point is that maybe ABC would air the unaired episodes of PD on ABC Family. Otherwise it’ll probably be a year or so until you get to see them on DVD.

  132. Nick C says:

Julia, if the show is canceled, I’d guess the DVD would be out in May or so.

  133. Nick C says:

CBS is starting to announce the shows they are extending. So far GARY UNMARRIED got a full season pick up, and WORST WEEK got more eps ordered.

  134. Rob says:

My idea was always for me a best case scenario. With the show being canceled because i’m not into miracles and what not i’ll just wait for the dvd though at least it seem like a few more episodes will air since the press release for the dec 10 episode is out. But does anyone else find it weird how they would pair Scrubs with LOST and possibly 2 episodes a week of scrubs which means it would only be 9 weeks since ABC only has 18 episodes.

  135. Cool says:

CBS orders full season of ‘Gary Unmarried’
    http://www.thrfeed.com/2008/11/cbs-orders-full.html

  136. Michael says:

So I have a quick question, because Chuck is so close to being in the green (0.02 index points away) could it be possible that it will be renewed for another season? After all, it does go head to head with Dancing With The Stars. I always thought it’d be booted to Fridays or preferably be moved to USA Network where it has a better fit along side shows like Psych, Burn Notice and Monk before it gets canned.

  137. Rob says:

I personally feel that Chuck is going to end up being safe for a third season. Chuck is going to be a part of NBC’ big push during the Super Bowl and i doing a 3-D episode that will be advertised during the Super Bowl so will possibly end up getting a significant bump than.

  138. DD says:

I just found this blurb that ABC may try to relaunch PD in the fall:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2008/11/07/DI2008110703001.html

    Has anyone else heard this?

  139. Rob says:

DD, we have heard that rumor but it is one of those believe when i see it kind of thing because it is very unrealistic.

  140. Nick C says:

The talent behind PD are all being shopped around as we speak. The idea of a “Fall Season,” for PD is extremely unlikely. Then again it is ABC. They do stupid almost as well as NBC. Without Gray’s and DWTS I think ABC would be getting made fun of almost as much as NBC is.

  141. Nick C says:

LOM, DSM and PD have officially been left off the Winter Schedule.

    Wednesday Nights:

    8/7: SCRUBS
    8:30/7:30: THE GOODE FAMILY
    9/8: LOST
    10/9: THE UNUSUALS

    This is direct from ABC.

  142. Nick C says:

ABC is announcing when those new shows will premiere next week. One can assume that THE UNUSUALS may not start until March or April, but we don’t know. Right now it’s looking bad for LOM.

  143. Nick, it’s OK to just source the Futon Critic, they beat you to it by an hour and a half ;-)

    http://www.futoncritic.com/news.aspx?date=11/14/08&id=7848

  144. Nick C says:

Robert, I actually got the info from the same place Futon Critic did. I just couldn’t link to it since you need the ability to log in.

  145. Nick C says:

but thanks for a link! I’m kind of shocked about LOM.

  146. Alde says:

Very nice news into the Friday night! I’ve been dying to see Amber Tamberlyn on screen again. And looks like it is pretty official now that Eli will be staying put. Excellent.

  147. Nick, feel free to cut and paste from there — you could’ve included Tuesdays too. I’m surprised about LOM as well. It seems a good fit out of Lost.

  148. S. says:

the Futon critic has the latest version of ABC’s lineup

  149. S. says:

Sorry, it was already up thead, but it’s what is on stagepass since late yesterday/early today

  150. Nick C says:

Robert, it’s my understanding that only WED & THU lineups are complete. ABC keeps updating the schedule there. We still have yet to find out when CASTLE, CUPID and others air. Today was the first time I saw THE GOODE FAMILY and THE UNUSUALS on the schedule so I posted it. The Tuesday lineup hasn’t changed for awhile on there.

  151. Vader says:

“Even without the first episode, the show would probably still be in the safe till May zone for the current chart, but I don’t think anyone, even NBC, sees a 1.8 as acceptable, especially when coming out of a 3.6.”

Oh come on Julia! If that were true, two thirds of NBC Wednesdays would be gone. I guess I can point out those shows never hit a 3.6 either. I love how My Own Worst Enemy gets hammered because its first episode did well. So if all the episodes did poorly and didn’t lose any audience, it wouldn’tve gotten cancelled? I seem to be the only person coming to this blog that thinks full season orders for Knight Rider and Life are absolute jokes. If you are pointing out the demo in one place, point it out elsewhere please.

  152. Nick C says:

Vader, LIFE is a head scratcher. I can’t see anything that makes me go “hmmm, maybe we should keep this show!” KR on the other hand was doing really well (for NBC) when they bought a full season order. The last two weeks have been so bad though that they do look stupid for it.

I’ve watched LIFE and I liked what I saw. The only thing LIFE may have going for it is some obscure demo that NBC wants. That has to be the reason, because I can’t see one.

  153. fin says:

Odd if it were a 1.0 surivial; NBC would only be renewing 5 shows

  154. Vader says:

I agree Nick. It seems that Life is being kept around because NBC likes the show. Obviously, I’m in disagreement and so is this chart. I’m trying to figure out what makes Life so special. I haven’t been drawn to watch it. Then again, I wasn’t drawn to My Own Worst Enemy by the promos, so it could be a great show for all I know.

  155. Kim says:

hey! does anyone have any input on the cancelation of lipstick jungle?

  156. Pinemom says:

I wish that the network twits would just leave a show on long enough for it to get a following. it seems like the show is just starting to grow on you before they yank it from the line up. How long does it take to break in a new pair of jeans until they become your favourites? 3 episodes and the show is gone. If anything should go it’s the shows like deal or no deal… how hard of a game show is that… pick a case, pick a case, pick a case. to me tv was always a way to escape for an hour or thirty minutes from your own life and live vicariously through one on the tv. I realize that it takes time and money to make these shows but just give them sometime. I can’t speak to the show MOWE but as for LSJ, I thought it was great. I really do hope that Eli Stone and Carusoe stay, I watch them with my son and it is something that we enjoy to together and there isn’t a whole lot of shows that do that!

  157. David4 says:

I have been saying it for awhile, Eli Stone will be fine, the demo numbers are OK. However PD and DSM are dead, that’s very clear, more so PD.

Life on Mars being canceled would be a surprise.

  158. Fin says:

MNIE seems to have remained strong compared to its previous seasons 18-49 with only like a 200,000 drop.

  159. Julia says:

David, while I won’t argue whether Eli Stone is canceled or not, what part of this chart leads you to believe that Eli Stone’s demo numbers are ok, and better than DSM or PD. It’s got about 30,000 more demo viewers than PD and 30,000 less than DSM.

  160. Shannon says:

It’s bizarre to me that ABC would keep Eli Stone and cancel Life on Mars. Life on Mars numbers have consistently been up the past weeks (except for last week, but you have to consider that no one in the Boston region watched the show due to the football game) while Eli Stone’s numbers have been down.

  161. Julia says:

Shannon, I believe there was a discuss on this site a while back about just how much it costs to dress a set as the 70s week in and week out. While I agree it looks like Life On Mars should be kept rather than Eli Stone, maybe Eli Stone was able to cut costs enough to make it worth keeping it, while Life On Mars could not.

  163. Shawn says:

Curious if anyone has considered that a target audience for Pushing Daisies would likely be wholesome family types and many of them have church on Wednesday night. Even PTA mom’s know not to plan activities on Wednesdays. Seems like Tuesdays, pre-Eli would be a much better plan to grab that demo.

  164. Julia says:

    There’s church on Wednesday nights?

  165. Holly says:

Julia, Many Protestant and Evangelical denominations hold mid-week services on Wednesdays. I doubt it has much of an effect (if any) on the ratings for Pushing Daisies though.

  166. Nick C says:

Yeah somehow the type that go to church on a Wednesday don’t catch me as the type of person to watch a show about someone who reanimates the dead.

  167. Holly says:

More to the point, it wouldn’t explain PD’s rating problems. PD has lost over half its viewers, and I seriously doubt it’s because all those people started attending Wednesday services since the premiere.

  168. Julia says:

Maybe it’s because I just watched Jesus Camp last night, but I also doubt that mid-week church goers are the type who would be interested in a show that has some sort of witchcraft involved, plus its creator is a gay man.

  169. Nick C says:

Holly, are you sure? Maybe they watched and thought “my god, TV is so bad now, maybe the world is coming to an end! Maybe I should go to church?”

  170. GRD says:

As one who has missed a lot of shows because of having choir practice on Wednesday nights (the only time I ever saw an episode of “Lost” was when we had the week off), I can vouch for what Shawn said. But don’t be so sure that Christians aren’t interested in stories about magic or fantasy or whatever. Tolkien was a Roman Catholic, for goodness’ sake! :-) (And if we waited for shows with no gay people involved, we’d be waiting a very long time!)

  171. Julia says:

    Is this week’s chart delayed?

  172. no, the data is available, Bill has just been out most of the day. I’m pretty sure it will be up sometime later today.

  173. Bill Gorman says:

Child care duties are complete for now, Renew/Cancel Index incoming!

  174. David4 says:

Actually it is still 60% in HS and at my college it was 64%.

$50 on canceled for sure, not canceled, and canceled.
