Friday Nielsen Ratings: CBS Breezes to victory with strong Ghost Whisperer

Posted on 15 November 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard CBS ABC FOX NBC CW
Total Viewers (million) 9.42 5.81 5.28 4.34 1.60
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 2.2/7 1.7/5 1.4/4 1.2/4 0.6/2

CBS again easily defeated the Friday night competition and was dominant in terms of total viewers and among the few 18-49 year olds watching broadcast network television on Friday. Ghost Whisperer partied like it was 2006 and nearly had a 3.0 among 18-49 year olds and was again above average in total viewers. But a The Price is Right Salutes the Troops special was not as compelling as a rerun of NCIS, and as a result, CBS was down on average versus last Friday’s performance and Numb3rs was more than a little bit worse off for it.

Meanwhile ABC, the network that brings you Supernanny is planning on bringing you Supermanny. And we’re not talking about the former ex Indians, Red Sox (and soon to be ex?) Dodger who has cool dreadlocks and hits lots of homeruns. If *that* Manny was just Manny being Manny while taking care of some kids, I’d have had to have watched that myself. But it seems like the Supernanny faithful enjoyed it. A Barbara Walters Special was ABC’s most watched program for the night.

Meanwhile over on Fox…moving right along. As for NBC, the 9pm-11pm block is just playing out the string like a last place team in September.

I almost forgot (but so did you), the CW did actually broadcast shows last night.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Tony S says:

Well if Joss Whedon can bring 7 million to Dollhouse, Fox will be in second for the night, and all Terminator has to do is bring its audience too.

  2. Nick C says:

Numb3rs sure has shown it needs a strong lead in to get the good numbers.

  3. Fin says:

EHC will be cancelled, those are poor numbers but then again it is friday

  4. I’m not sure EHC (or the Game) will be renewed, but I don’t think they’re getting cancelled before the year is up. I believe there are some “political” reasons to keep them, plus it looks like CW will be getting Sunday night back to program on its own for the rest of this season soon.

  5. Tony S says:

And to add I think, if Joss brings 7 million, the demo numbers would probably beat Numb3rs even if thats hitting 10/11 million.

  6. moonlightfan says:

I don’t get it, isn’t this November sweeps? Isn’t anyone taking Friday nights seriously?

All MOONLIGHT FANS, please go here to thank SCIFI for airing MOONLIGHT in JANUARY!!

  7. Cool says:

Did anyone watch 20/20 last night? I was really shocked that the pregnant man was pregnant again.

  8. Gaby says:

NBC deserves to be in last place among the networks – doesn’t support its better efforts at all. Pouring all its time, effort and money into dogs like Knight Rider and the upcoming boring drama, Kings – letting Lipstick Jungle and its slowly growing audience of women flounder on the worst spot on television – no future for this channel at all!

  9. ryan says:

i dont think EHc will be cancelled because its in its fourth season and next and its nearing its 100 episode so that means syndication and more needed money for the cw i think it will be cancelled after next season though, no doubt about that.

  11. Paula says:

Well, all I can say is that I know where my TV will be on in January 23 th . It will be in SciFi watching Moonlight . At least I will not have to worry about ratings , demos… and whatever I am watching to be canceled again because it is not good enough for a network. CBS, FOX…can fight all they want in Friday nights for their beautiful ratings , I will be happily enjoying my Moonlight in SciFi.

  12. Laura says:

    Congratulations to C.B.S.
I LOVE GHOST WHISPERER LETS HOPE THEY KEEP IT ON THE AIR!

  13. Alde says:

Gaby, actually I have great hopes for Kings. Though seeing how NBC is doing right now, very unlikely it will become the ‘tide breaker’. However, I’d be more than glad to see Ian McShane on screen again!

  14. Lynxie says:

I can’t watch GW. It’s like drinking a bottle of gooey syrup. I could never understand why CBS cancelled Joan of Arcadia, and it’s outstanding cast, in favor of the this trite fluff. I’ve never been impressed with JLH though, maybe that’s the problem.

  15. Alde says:

Whoa, Joan is awesome. One of my favorite shows of all time. And it has a lot to do with the fact that I’m really waiting for Unusuals to see Tamberlyn again.

  16. byeu says:

NCIS cettainly does help CBS, and its a cheap solution, I assume, since its a rerun, they’ve already paid the production costs, but there isn’t much expense to show the rerun, and the advertisers are happy with the demos. Of course, it still doesn’t solve the problem that CBS has had concerning all the former inhabitants of the time slot.

  17. moonlightfan says:

Guys have you ever checked out True Blood on HBO on Sundays at 9. I believe there was a little gentle ribbing going on between the showrunner of True Blood towards Joel Silver’s Moonlight in episode 5 when the vampire Bill Compton said to Balfour when they came to question him that he doesn’t own a fridge. I wouldn’t be surprised if that line wasn’t a part of the original novel

The showrunner had also taken a potshot at Joel Silver in the media once saying how it was pretty lame/lazy to have your vampires be able to walk around during the day just so they wouldn’t have to shoot at night.

  18. Mandi says:

Goodness! LJ’s numbers are horrible! I can’t believe even with those numbers, it STILL managed to win the demo for NBC last night! Forget Sci-Fi– maybe NBC should pick up Moonlight ;)

It’s too bad because I really do like LJ. Any news on whether NBC is going to let the rest of the episodes air? I know the full order has already been filmed.

  19. Noah says:

Oh God. Terminator and Dollhouse are gonna get destroyed :(

  20. Rob R says:

For Crusoe and Lipstick Jungle, NBC delayed Friday Night Lights?? All last season FNL averaged will over 6 million live viewers, and a 18-49 rating of 1.9 to 2.0. It then added another 20-25% to its audience by including DVR Live + 7 viewers. At least we will have FNL back in early February, apparently on Friday nights on NBC.

  21. Bill Gorman says:

Rob R, NBC delayed FNL for DirectTV who chipped in financially to get an early, temporary exclusive on the show.

Also, your memory is a bit off. FNL did dreadfully, it never got over 6m live viewers except for its premiere, and after the premiere it was consistently 4th or 5th in the 18-49 demo in its time slot.

Here are the numbers for its first 5 airings last season:

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/2007/11/05/nbc-friday-night-lights-renew-or-cancel/1609

The fact that Crusoe and LJ are doing dreadfully means NBC was mistaken about them, not that they were mistaken to take FNL off the schedule under the terms that DirectTV paid for.

  22. R.J. says:

Looks like FOX gameshows did better, but FOX still came in 3rd place of the night even tough for the Time slots it was the 2nd most popular. Why!?

  23. RJ, because Fox only broadcasts nationally for two hours, ABC had three and that third hour helped a lot as far as its average.

  24. cesarrr says:

maybe CBS should put a NCIS spinoff on fridays 9pm. Or just another military drama starring a “hot” older guy.

I’m so happy for GHOST WHISPERER, I don`t really like the storylines, but I love Jennifer Love Hewitt and her relationship with David Conrad, I love that couple.

Even though EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS SUCKS at the ratings, I think its a watchable show, and I also think this is its last season. There are enough episodes for syndication. This show is a mainstream HIT in Brazil (population:180 million) there’s a network there that airs the show every chance they get.

  25. Matthew says:

I LOVED SuperManny! When are more on the way?

  26. hookedonmick says:

What does this really say about that time slot on Cbs Fridays? Cbs is known for its crime procedurals, so wouldn’t it be wise to think that they will be in Flashpoint or some other NCIS type show?

  27. Chris says:

I must be the only person that actually likes Crusoe. Its a cheesy show that reminds me of a TV show that would have been huge in the 60’s or 70’s. I don’t know why, but I’ve found myself watching Crusoe right after Ghost Whisperer for 3 weeks in a row and I haven’t been disappointing yet. I can’t wait for Friday Night Lights to get back on the air. That will be on heck of a Friday line-up, hopefully they don’t try to fight GW with FNL so I can watch all 3 shows in a row.

  28. Thunder Mountain says:

Ghost is doing better partially because the competition is stale old game shows and also just becuae JLH is so smoking hot. 5th grader was a short term wonder and Deal is suffering from “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” syndrome of overexposure – on all the time. But close to 12 million on Fridays is still very impressive.

  29. Emily says:

wow good for my fav show!!!!!!! yipee eh laura?

  30. Amelia says:

Ghost Whisperer has lost my interest ever since they have been heavily preaching
reincarnation. Many of us don’t believe in reincarnation and find it annoying to
have this one narrow view bombarding us every friday at 8 PM.There is a new agey
agenda to the show I don’t find appealing.

  31. Amelia says:

Ghost Whisperer would appeal to more people if it let the viewer make up their
mind what their religious view is.Reincarnation comes from religion and religion
should be left out of the storyline.

  32. Rachel says:

I slept through Lipstick Jungle. Won’t miss it one bit!
