USA Sets Final Season for “Monk”

Posted on 15 November 2008 by Bill Gorman

TVWeek is reporting:

USA Network’s “Monk” will solve his last case next year, as the award-winning series will end at the close of its eighth, 16-episode season, the network announced today.

The final season is scheduled to begin airing in the summer of 2009.

The show hit series ratings highs in February with its largest audience of adults in the 18- to 49-year-old demographic (2.98 million) and total viewers with 7.55 million.

“Monk” star Tony Shalhoub has been nominated for the Emmys’ lead actor in a comedy series for six consecutive years, winning in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

I love Monk, but at the same time am okay with it ending. It’s had a good run.

  2. moonlightfan says:

Me too, I love this show and I am very happy for Tony Shalhoub. I hope he gives us an ending we will cherish always.

  3. Nick C says:

When this show went more for comedy than for “this guy is seriously insane,” it lost me. I thought it was a brilliant new take on Sherlock, but basically when they changed the music theme they changed the show. Maybe they’ll have him solve his wife’s murder and retire.

  4. GRD says:

Oh, phooey. I guess it’s time, but I’m gonna miss it. :-(

I don’t mean to be a stick in the mud, but the show hasn’t been quite as sharp since Sharona left. Yeah, I know, shows move on, the actress wanted too much money, don’t live in the past, blah blah blah. I don’t care, I still miss her. They’ve tried hard with Natalie, but her personality just isn’t as much fun, and the writing for her isn’t as good. (I caught an old episode on a plane trip recently and was forcibly reminded of the contrast.)

I would like to state for the record, though, that as one who heard the collective wailing and gnashing of teeth on the show’s message boards when the music was changed, I still prefer the new theme. :-)

Well, here’s hoping for a satisfactory solution to Trudy’s murder.

It seemed obvious this would happen, that USA would giv the show one final season to wrap thing up nicely rather than end it this season. USA still has Psych, In Plain Sight and Burn Notice here’s to one great long running show Monk.

  7. Don says:

Cable viewering has gone up in recent years. Monk helped, but hey as Dan said USA has several other recent hits that have been doing well.

  8. Jasmine says:

Folks, I’m have been an ardent fan of Monk only for one year and ever since my hubby introduced me to this series, i ordered all the dvds and watched them. Well, to some extent, I do agree that the episodes with Sharona had stronger and better story lines, maybe just a mere co-incidence. Natalie seems more sophisticated though. I am going to miss MONK like I haven’t missed another TV series before but I am truly happy for Tony Shalhoub. Hopefully he will end the series after solving his wife’s case. Three Cheers for MONK!!!

  9. Sam says:

I guess I’m in the minority that began enjoying the show a lot more when Sharona left. I just hated her, got on my nerves so much with her constant whining even though he’s usually trying to do the right thing. It was like she was always complaining about him this or that when he’s trying to find a friggin killer! Yes Sharona, let’s make this about you now…

I’ve been hearing about this for a long time. It seems the show is really expensive now with Shaloub’s salary. The good news is, they are giving us a full final season so the writers can end this the right way. There aren’t many shows I’d truly miss when they go away; this will be one of them. There’s really no other show that can make me laugh and tug on my heartstrings all at the same time.

  10. Chris the TV sage says:

I don’t blame Traylor Howard, but her Natalie just isn’t as compelling as Sharona. I haven’t watched regularly over the past three years or so, but I’ll be back for the last few eps. When this show was good, it was very good, so I owe it that much.

  11. This is one of the few non-sports programs I actually watch and I’ll definitely miss it. It had a great run, but thank goodness for DVDs.

USA has been cleaning up, for sure, over the last few years with their other shows. I wonder what’s next for the channel.

  12. Joe says:

    What a bummer…MONK is the best…

  13. R.G. says:

    Finally – another stupid show – GONE…

….and don’t argue with me – they tried putting it a free network and it bombed in the ratings there too…

    It’s NOT a funny show!!!

  14. Chris says:

    R.G. that’s your opinion.

Monk was one of the best shows I have ever watched. Although I have to disagree with the people who say the character Sharona is better than Natalie. Sharona annoyed the living fuck out me. The way she acted bothered me. Natalie was just all round good character, I found it more enjoyable to watch.

  15. Marie says:

I like Sharona and Natalie. Each got her personality and it’s natural that they’re written differently.

I’ll miss Monk/Tony Shalhoub and the whole cast members. I was just telling colleagues how last week episode was great and they agreed with me.
    It’s one of my favorites.

  16. Me says:

It has to end with him finding trudys murdere if it doesnt i will b soo mad it has been drving me crazy

  17. monkfish says:

Those who do not like Monk hold their annual convention in a phone booth. What dolts.

I hate to see it go, but it has had a good run.

  18. Ruthann says:

I’m glad to see Monk has so many erudite fans. I feel really bad that it’ll be over soon. I’ve watched it from the very beginning and although it’s had better days (and not because Sharona made it better) but it was still fun to watch. However, at least Pysch will still be around, right? Now that’s a great show!

  19. Ruthann says:

Oops! Sorry for the bad spelling. I meant, Psych. God, what an idiot!

  20. Leigh Ann Wages says:

I am REALLY gonna miss MONK! When I heard about this will be the final season ever I was in shock, still am. I am totally in love with ALL the characters. Why is it ending only for 8 seasons? It’s not fair! To all the MONK fans, we will miss everybody on the show, esp. me!! Tony is a legend! ALL WILL BE MISSED. I WILL GET ALL 8 SEASONS ON DVD EVEN IF I GO BROKE!! God Bless!!

  21. Mark Drennen says:

I say we start a petition to keep the show on and Mink solving crimes

  22. Mark Drennen says:

I say we start a petition to keep the show on and Monk solving crimes

  23. Mark Drennen says:

I hope it ends with him finding Trudys killer and getting reinstated on the Police force….course that would just open the door to run the series a few more years.

  24. Laur says:

    yo R.G.

If you dont like monk, then what do you like?????? geez

  25. Laur says:

    hey Mark Drennen,

I’m with you on everything you said! the petition!!!

and if they reallllllyyyy want to end the show at least end on season 10, afterall, its monks favorite number, nice and even and round! =)

  26. Jeff says:

It’s been a fun ride and I think 8 seasons is a great run. I really hope he finds who murdered his wife and maybe get’s married and becomes a full fledged detective again. That would be the best ending for me.

  27. Cindy says:

I love this show, haven’t missed one. I’ll miss the series. I hope that this is what the actors want and it has a great run.

  28. bw says:

You people are crazy! Monk is the best show ever to grace USA’s airwaves and now they take it off. Forget that nonsense!! I’ll quit watching Pysche then too!!! Only reason I even watch Psyche is because it came on after Monk in the firstplace. Monk was the first and probably only show I have ever watched on USA religously. Too bad, another HBO-like move sinks the entire network below the projected first year viewership for The Hair Network.

  29. bw says:

    Stupid, stupid, infuriatingly stupid!!!

  30. Margo! says:

I will miss the show, all of the actors have been wonderful, witty and fun. Ted Devine is truely DEVINE!! ;)

  31. Margo! says:

I meant Ted Levine…The misspelling in the lasr comment was a Freudian slip ;)

  32. MarkC says:

Yes, Captain Stottlemeyer is a great character, as is Randy.

I think the confusing thing about Sharona is that while the actress who plays Natalie is just much better, when they made the change in actresses they also changed some other things. For instance, the number of episodes about Trudy’s death decreased, and Monk also became less open emotionally. I think these decisions made the emotional fate of the character less dramatically interesting, and he ended up being more a clown than a good person trapped in a neurosis by his emotional baggage. So it wasn’t that Sharona was better, it is just that you got more involved in the Monk character in those Sharona episodes.

  33. HUBELINDA CORTES says:

I have been a fan of Tony Shalhoub since Wings, but as MONK he is incredibly. I find myself “doing” MONK things in the supermarket and in doctor’s waiting rooms, etc. No, I am not as extreme as he.
I am sadden that MONK is finalizing, however I hope Shalhoub finds another part as suited for him as this.
