Thanks. I had no idea the DVR percentage was still that low. I have been DVRing for many years (ReplayTV before it was cool) so just assumed that number was higher. Bummer.

Shawn, the simplest answer is that the way it shakes out is that most of the bills are still paid via Live viewing. Television is advertising supported. Most DVR viewers don’t watch the ads. Services like Hulu have 4-6 ads vs. more than 30 on a TV show, so they haven’t figured out how to make nearly as money on it.

Plus, for now, most of the viewing is still live. 90210 increased live viewing by 50% but that still means 2/3rds watched live, and one third watched via DVR. Sanctioned online viewing for now is less than DVR viewing based on available data.

I’m new to this board so forgive what may be a stupid question (and one that nobody can answer) but why do networks still care so much about live viewing numbers in an era of DVR and online viewing. Seems to me that Pushing Daisies has shown up on this list each week that it has been on, and with decent time shifted numbers. Doesn’t this mean anything? Cable shows bring in 3 million and seem ok with that. When are the networks going to realize they aren’t the cool kids on the block anymore and lower expectations? Seems to me 7 million is a pretty good number. Just curious…

Fin, The daily numbers Robert and Bill post are Live+Same Day. Usually around 40-50% of DVR viewing is included in the daily numbers (more for reality shows, less for 10 pm shows).

Julia — I deleted your comment (and mine) only because before dashing out for the day, Bill fixed the post. Clutz, yeah, Heroes is down by all metrics, with DVR, without DVR, throw in the downloads…it doesn’t matter. Down, and based on last night’s numbers (which I’ll post soon) the bleeding seems to have stopped, but it’s not like any old viewers came back to watch the show either.

yes the annual Treehouse of Horror aired on 11/2 and is the episode of The Simpsons included above.

I don’t think this looks good for Heroes. Even with DVR they cannot crack 10 million viewers now?
I wonder if the new writing team can bring some coherence back to that program. I quit watching, and I guess some Nielsen families did too .

This data would have been the week of The Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror,” yes? Their Halloween episodes are always fun.
