Thursday Ratings: ‘30 Rock’ and ‘ER’ hold up

Posted on 21 November 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard CBS ABC NBC FOX CW Uni
Total Viewers (million) 13.91 10.67 7.70 4.46 4.40 4.04
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 3.9/10 3.7/10 3.3/9 1.9/5 1.8/5 1.5/4
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 2.5/7 3.4/10 3.0/9 1.8/5 1.7/5 1.6/5

Note: Smallville and Supernatural fans, the numbers below for your shows are sadly a bit meaningless for now because last night’s NFL Network game between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh aired on the CW affiliated in the Pittsburgh market. The way the overnight numbers are tabulated, even though both Smallville and Supernatural were preempted for the football game, the viewing for the football game in the local Pittsburgh market is counted in the numbers below. The Pittsburgh viewing will be removed from the final numbers and those totals will drop.

CBS took the night among total viewers and 18-49 year olds, and ABC won among 18-34 year olds. Ugly Betty, was down about 900,000 viewers from last week’s overnight report and a bit lower in the demos too, but last week’s overnight numbers for ABC were probably inflated because last week’s Thursday Night NFL contest between the Patriots and Jets aired on the local ABC affiliate in Boston.

Grey’s Anatomy was slightly up versus, and Life on Mars was down almost a million viewers and a bit in the 18-49 demo (again, the Boston market viewing for the Patriots was in last week’s numbers). But Eleventh Hour was down a million viewers and .3 among 18-49 year olds too.

Ugly Betty and Grey’s Anatomy were down 26% or so in the 18-49 demo versus this time last year. CSI was down just a bit from last week.

Two hours of Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares (original and repeat) aren’t doing much for Fox, but it gets about the same amount of demo viewers as Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles does on Mondays.

So far, the season’s big success story on Thursday nights is probably 30 Rock. I say probably because I suppose you could call it a toss up with the (allegedly) outgoing ER, which appears to be going out very strong and easily won the demos last night. Sure 30 Rock isn’t doing The Office style numbers in the demos, but it’s doing way better than last year. The Sarah Palin/Tina Fey timing was a blessing and that blessing has not evaporated yet. It was down slightly from last week when Jennifer Aniston was on, but only slightly.

Last week’s overnight report is available if you want to compare.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Jordan says:

Ugly Betty’s overnight numbers were inflated last week from football.

  2. Ladiesman217 says:

Smallville still doing amazing. GO SMALLVILLE!

  3. Good catch Jordan, thanks. I’ll amend the text — same holds true for Life on Mars, I guess

  4. Andrea says:

So…is there any way NBC can “uncancel” ER?

  5. Andrea, the old cliche’ of “where there’s a will (and the numbers are good), there’s a way” is still as true as it has ever been…

  6. LBColby says:

Wow, is ‘Life on Mars’ the new ‘Eli Stone’? 51% retention out of Grey’s in total viewers and just 42% in adults 18-49? And the show is taking a 6-week hiatus in December and January and then moving to Wed at 10, leading out of ‘Lost’, which might pull in somewhat lower numbers than ‘Grey’s’, thus (possibly) resulting in further audience erosion for Eli? Not a good season for ABC.

  7. Daniel says:

UB was really good last night, kind of upset it is down from last week. I am surprised that it has been very consistent against Survivor, and is beating it in 18-34. Go UGLY!

Grey’s was great last night with Izzy picking Alex over Denny, TWIST! I was shocked, and I am so so glad it is up from last week. It’s my favorite show on television.

I began to watch ER as I know it is the last season, but man thats a show you have to be die- hard to watch… CONFUSING! A 180 degree change from Grey’s. Still, it was a good episode.

Overall, great night for ABC, NBC, and CW

  8. Julia says:

Andrea, they are adding more episodes to its order. But I think it’s really time to go, even if it is performing well for NBC.

  9. Julia says:

Daniel, Izzy picked Alex over a figment of her imagination? WOW! (So glad I don’t watch anymore.)

  10. Daniel says:

Julia, the show seems to get better and better. You really should watch.

  11. Kathy says:

This is the third week in a row that Smallville & SPN were preempted by football. Hope the ratings hold up when they return with new episodes in January.

  12. Shannon says:

LBColby, but “Lost” will be a much better fit for “LoM” than “GA” has been. “GA” and “LoM” have very different audiences and “GA” will be much more compatible with “Private Practice” and “LoM” will be much more compatible with “Lost” … hence the moving of “LoM” to Wednesday and “PP” to Thursday.

  13. Shannon says:

I had to go back and check Nielsen Wire to see what LoM’s final #’s were last week and they were 7,968,000 (this did not include Boston where LoM was pre-empted due to the Patriots game), so it looks like “LoM”’s numbers were pretty much equal to last week. Not great since I really thought (and hoped) they’d go up, but thankful that they didn’t really drop.

  14. the128boy says:

30 Rock is still retaining a *good* amount of The Office’s audience, but was actually down to it’s least *good* retention rate this week in Audience/18-49/18-34…
    respectively 86%, 81%, 77%. Last week (based on the early #s) were 91%, 90%, 84%.

That being said, it’s still doing an impressive job holding the Office’s young, upscale audience. And despite what they will tell you, it’s doing a lot better than what all the naysayers were predicting when the show got renewed for a third season.

Kath and Kim however, is still a nightmare in that 830 slot. Although I know that NBC is looking at the 81%, 88%, 95% retention out of Earl when they evaluate K&K, I think that it’s reasonable to assume that a show in the 830 slot would increase over the 800 slot. After all, the HUT levels are still rising to reach that 900/930 high, so wouldn’t it be safe to say that even if K&K was able to retain 90-something percent of Earl every week that would still be underperforming? I am willing to bet that UB, Suvivor, Smallville and even Kitchen Nightmares all increased in their second half hour, while NBC, obviously, dropped.

  15. clutz12001 says:

Wow, Izzy picked Alex. I wonder if that will change the Yahoo! writer’s mind who made Izzy tops in their “Characters who need to be killed off” article yesterday? They also support killing off Mohinder on “Heroes.”

I killed off GA and Heroes in my household already ;) .

BTW, GO STEELERS! And I actually watched the NFL Network last night :P ! But I had to flip to FSN Pittsburgh for the Pens/Thrashers hockey fest too.

  16. Julia says:

the128boy, I don’t think anyone can call 30 Rock’s number less than surprisingly great for NBC. There’s no way they could have even hoped to see these sort of numbers. So I’m extremely happy.

  17. clutz12001 says:

I wonder if Izzy’s Choice her will take her off the “TV characters who need killed off” list that was on Yahoo! yesterday? She was the top of the list! Mohinder Suresh on Heroes was on it too. I have already tuned out on both of them in my house.

BTW I was one of the fourteen people watching NFL Network last night. GO STILLERS! :)

  18. Shannon/all: FYI, you can get the weekly final numbers for ABC here:

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/category/ratings/top-shows-by-network/abc-tv-ratings

(we post them for all networks weekly — you can just click on the appropriate network links in the navigation near the top of the site)

  19. clutz12001 says:

My apologies for duplicate comments! My computer froze up and I didn’t see that my comment already had posted, so I rewrote it. Seriously, sorry.

  20. Vader says:

30 Rock will sink when it stops having notable guest stars (next week) and gets to the second half of the season. For a show that gets as much media hype as it does, it still doesn’t get the ratings it should as much coverage as it gets.

  21. LBColby says:

Yes, Shannon. The Lost/LoM combo will definitely be a much better fit than GA/LoM, I’m just curious to see what the show manages to do after a small hiatus, plus airing out of a lower-rated show than GA (perhaps, I’m mistaken and ‘Lost’ will average 15+ million viewers like GA, but with all hit ABC shows down this season, I bet ‘Lost’ will lose some steam, too – it had already been as low as 11-12 million in the past).

  22. Outlander says:

I bet Fox is sorry they signed Gordon Ramsay to a multi-year deal.

  23. Timmy says:

I agree with Vader. 30 Rock doesn’t get the ratings becuase as much as they try to cram it down our throats, viewers are not stupid. The Office is a far better show, and while 30 Rock has it’s moments, it is certainly not a watch now show , but a DVR and catch it later. The Office is a watch now show for more people becuase it is flat out a better show with funnier actors and superior writing. Arrested Development was a much funnier show in it’s day…wish it had the kind of support from it’s network that 30 Rock gets.

  24. Matt says:

Supernatural is getting to be pretty stupid or am i the only one who thinks so?
    :(

  25. I doubt it, Outlander. KN performing in the demo as well as TSCC is much more profitable for them even accounting for Ramsay’s fat contract. That said, they may be sorry they didn’t go with two runs of Hell’s Kitchen per year (as CBS does with Survivor). But HK will have its hands full on Thursdays. It will be interesting to see how it does, and how Fox utilizes Ramsay *next* year. Depending on how the Friday experiment works in February, I’d expect to see something like Bones/HK on Wednesdays next Fall with Are You Smarter/Don’t Forget on Thursdays.

  26. Matt, it might not be just you, but I’ve kind of enjoyed it. It could just be that I like seeing Robert Wisdom in role of an ass-kicking, pissed off angel. It’s a far cry from his role as the gentle Bunny Colvin on The Wire.

  27. Derek says:

Any guesses how much Smallville will drop?

I know it won’t be as bad as last week(4.34->3.56) and probably not as bad as the week before(4.81->4.46) when it was pre-empted

  28. Joe says:

I have to ask wouldn’t Chuck -> The Office -> 30 Rock make for a better night for NBC on Thursdays. Chuck does the same in the demo as Earl and much better than Kath & Kim, plus the competition in this slot would give Chuck a chance at actually moving up. I say this both as a Chuck fan and an advocate for the best programming block possible for NBC.

  29. Derek says:

    Joe

I prefer Chuck on Mondays. I already watch Smallville and Survivor Thursdays at 8 :P

  30. Joe says:

I like Chuck on Mondays too, nay, I prefer it on Mondays. But I still think it makes the most sense for NBC.

  31. stacy says:

“Supernatural is getting to be pretty stupid or am i the only one who thinks so?”

I can’t speak for everyone, but personally I’m enjoying this season very much.

  32. Sam says:

Why the heck is ABC all up on ‘Like on Mars’ low ratings when ‘Ugly Betty’ practically gets the same amount of viewers? They need to stop playing favoritism towards specific shows bc they seem to do that for no reason. Even their darling ‘Greys Anatomy’ has been significantly down in ratings this season, but their still treating it like royalty. Enough is Enough ABC…get your act together.

  33. Timmy says:

I agree, this is by far the best season for supernatural both creativley and ratings wise…well at least since the WB/UPN merger as far as ratings go, but storylines are better than ever!

  34. Mikey says:

“30 Rock will sink when it stops having notable guest stars (next week) and gets to the second half of the season”

This will be an interesting thing to track. 30 Rock is my favorite half-hour show and I think that both this year and last the guest star episodes have been their weakest efforts.

I generally question the value of guest stars. Not to say they have no value but I think the return you get is minimal and fleeting.

  35. R.J. says:

Kitchen Nightmares did worse in it’s second episode than the first. Probaly because it was a repeat, but last year, Kitchen Nightmares was scoreing 6-7 million an episode, this year they have been plummiting.

  36. Tommy says:

NBC was smart (for once) to put 30 Rock after The Office. Similar audience, strong lead-in. Let’s see if it can hold up until May

  37. Strahotski says:

I think Chuck stays on Monday night for the rest of this season and if the ratings aren’t up (with the boost of the heavily-advertise 3D episode) they’ll probably move it to Thursday at 8pm. NBC will move Chuck to a new night before they cancel it.

As for guest stars on 30 Rock, they are just doing whatever necessary to get viewers. HIMYM did it last season by stunt-casting Britney Spears and the show’s ratings has improve a lot since–especially this season.

  38. Kevin says:

Best hour of comedy today: NBC Thursdays 9-10. OFFICE and then 30 ROCK.

I think it comes down to whether or not 30 ROCK can sustain OFFICE’s audience the rest of the season. It shouldn’t be too difficult, considering both shows have a similar audience. I thought it always lagged coming after EARL. With all the buzz around 30 ROCK this year, if it doesn’t get the ratings it should the rest of the season, I’m not sure if it ever will. Damn, it’s good this show is on train-wrecked NBC. Or else, who knows its fate would have been.

  39. Shannon says:

    LBColby,

I agree. There is no way that Lost will have as many viewers as GA does, but I also think that LoM will hold alot more of Lost audience than it does of GA.

    Robert,

Thanks for the link to the final #’s.

  40. Kathy says:

I am also of the opinion that this has been a great season of Supernatural. I know of several people who have started watching it just because they love the Angels vs. Demons theme. It has however been more serialized this season than in past years. I have read other boards where people have said they miss the stand alone episodes. Now that the theme has been set, I’ll bet there will be more self contained episodes in the second half of the season.

  41. TheTruthHurts says:

Stephen McPherson at ABC…uhh dirty sexy money, pushing daisies, eli stone…gee what happened pal? got your finger right on the pulse of what the average slob wants to watch on tv huh…when these execs score a hit..its the percentages…nothing more….

  42. Sara says:

Supernatural has been stellar this season, with the exception of last night’s episode, which was fairly ridiculous. I just hope it won’t drop too much in the final ratings, because I’m desperate for a fifth season to happen.

The Office is still struggling in the plot area; last night’s episode was mediocre at best. Kath and Kim is so desperately horrible that I cannot see it ever improving or becoming a sleeper hit for NBC.

  43. moonlightfan says:

did anybody else know, Arrested Development getting movie deal?

    http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/index.html

I am really happy for him. So exciting when a good TV show gets a movie deal.

  44. FrankJ says:

I have high hopes that Chuck is going to bounce even higher in the numbers come next Monday. Hopefully a move is not necessary.

  45. tom says:

@ thetruthhurts: stephen mcpherson’s percentage is really really bad. he was not the one in charge when all the hits came along. that was susan lyne i believe. she was responsible for housewives, lost, grey’s (developed by her and held till mis-season). (he did program grey’s after housewives which i give him credit for) even bachelor, extreme makeover, boston legal… and 20/20 and funniest videos have been around forever… all not his. everything else is. and everything else is pretty weak sans dancing, brothers and sisters and ugly betty. after 4 years he has very little to show for himself in terms of hits. unless i’m missing something. i actually like his attempts and shows that are different but nothing clicks.

  46. Moose says:

The problem with Kitchen Nightmares is simple. Once you have seen one episode, you have seen them all. They are all pretty much the same. Sure, the restaurant owners change, but for the most part the show is absolutely predictable from one episode to the next segment to segment.

  47. Moose says:

I was wondering if Chuck got hurt at all in the ratings do to it being dumped that one week just so NBC could air Deal or No Deal.

  48. danny says:

I’m happy for the Winchester brothers, the show is getting better and better, I just simply love it…(greetings from Hungary)

  49. Nicholas06 says:

Smallville is doing great for season 8… Bride wasn’t as entertaining as i was expecting but the ratings are still up there… The Legion episode Jan 15th will b a good one!

  50. Vader says:

Robert, if Kitchen Nightmares and Terminator switched timeslots, Kitchen Nightmares would likely die and Terminator would likely improve. The early Thursday night timeslot is entirely more favorable than the early Monday night one. I don’t see how that’s a valid comparison at all.

  51. Vader, the numbers would likely be identical to what they are now.

We each think we’re right, but neither one of us can prove our cases

  52. DaisiesDeathKnell says:

Timmy, quit trying to objectively state that The Office is better than 30 Rock. It’s all down to the viewer. And frankly, television critics & Emmy voters seem to think 30 Rock is a better series, myself included. It does worse in the ratings because it’s more akin to an Arrested Development-style series with lots of in jokes & very, very surreal humor. It’s unquestionably a more orginal series than The Office and doesn’t fall back on the same sort of jokes as often. Does that make it better? That’s up for you to decide.

  53. Nick C says:

30 Rock had Oprah, then Jennifer Anniston, then Steve Martin. That is all stunt casting. I think we’ve witnessed the Sarah Palin/Fey affect in addition to stunt casting. The question is will it work or will ratings start falling? I was more amused by the Night Court reunion aspect than the Jennifer Anniston part of last week’s show. Steve Martin was frighteningly not good as well.

  54. kkn says:

I loved yesterday’s ep of Supernatural and I hope that it won’t drop too much in the final numbers. It deserves great ratings!

  55. Fin says:

Gotta say i was never mad about the Office (US): I don’t think its as good as the UK version. Kath & Kim’s rating do not reflect the show. They’re not shit enough.

  56. Kevin says:

    Fin,

Speaking as a fan of both, I didn’t think NBC’s OFFICE would even be half as good as BBC’s OFFICE. But they somehow made it their own. Stayed true to its British roots, yet changed it enough to give it a sense of familiarity to Americans who are accustomed to the traditional sitcom. I’m glad they made it different.

Sure, people may say it’s not as good as the UK version, and I would tend to agree, but it actually does some things better than its predecessor. One thing I always wonder is, “How would people judge the US version if the UK version didn’t exist?” Many, many people probably can’t answer that.

As for Kath and Kim, NBC needs to find a better show to put in that slot.

  57. KH says:

The thing about Kath and Kim is that from my perspective, I see very little room for improvement if it gets a second season. I know, I know….usually the second season is when bad comedies turn into something great, but I haven’t seen something as bad as K/K before. Maybe NBC doesn’t have another comedy in the works? They should get cracking at it, because it’s really dragging down that night.

  58. KH says:

    DaisesDeathKnell,

I agree, it’s up to the viewer to decide what they they think is good or bad. What do people mean by ‘better’? It’s tough to define. But honestly, I mean, there’s a reason why 30 Rock AND Office win most of the various television comedy awards out there, right? They’re miles ahead of the competition.

Is it okay that I love both, but prefer The Office? I think so. That show’s just grown on me more. And I like their style better.

I don’t think we’ll ever know why 30 rock doesn’t do that well in the ratings. I do have a theory that the show doesn’t have an emotional connection with viewers which nearly all successful shows do. But hey, as long as my fav comedies are on the air, I’m gonna keep watching.

  59. Lisa says:

I seriously hope ER does not go to another season. I still like the show, but it needs to leave with some dignity. Dragging it out is not the way to do it. The best episodes this season have been the ones where old favorites returned. The episodes without those characters have not been that good.

  60. Theoacme says:

Andrea says: So…is there any way NBC can “uncancel” ER?

Maybe not for an entire season, but James Hibbert is reporting NBC may ask Warner Brothers for three more episodes this season, to bring the total order to 22 episodes: http://www.thrfeed.com/2008/10/nbc-considering.html

And I’m praying Robert is correct about “when there’s a will (and the numbers)…”

  61. Tyler says:

“Why the heck is ABC all up on ‘Like on Mars’ low ratings when ‘Ugly Betty’ practically gets the same amount of viewers?”

Sam, Ugly Betty doesn’t have Grey’s as its lead in… It doesn’t have anything as a lead in. The fact that it can get the same amount of viewers as Life on Mars while not having any support from a show that airs before it is impressive. Or rather, it makes Life on Mars look quite unimpressive, seeing as how Grey’s is such a powerhouse. Ugly Betty also almost always comes in 2nd in its timeslot and frequently comes in first in the 18-34 demo. Life on Mars can’t do as well in comparison. Anyways.

FOX just needs a hug. The fact that a repeat of Kitchen Nightmares almost gets the same amount of viewers as a new episode is just… not good.

  62. Lisa says:

Here’s a more recent article about ER and the possibility of a 16th season. It’s the first answer on this Q&A page, and was initially posted just yesterday:
    http://blog.zap2it.com/korbitv/2008/11/you-ask-i-ans-3.html

“I’m hearing that NBC execs are seriously considering a 16th season, though they’ve touted this year as the final curtain for quite some time now. Insiders tell me the Peacock net is hoping to keep County General open for business, as ER continues to win its time slot each week. Word is, the suits and creatives are meeting in an effort to work something out.”

  63. Bill Gorman says:

Lisa, assuming they can make the financial deal work that seems like a good idea for NBC. God knows as badly as they’ve been doing they can hardly afford to let their #5 adults 18-49 scripted show get away from them without a fight.

  64. Matt2 says:

    A big thanks to:

Fin- for that wonderful comment about Kath and Kim’s ratings. That one ( Kath & Kim’s rating do not reflect the show. They’re not shit enough.)is a classic! LOL.

and to Tom (thetruthhurts: stephen mcpherson’s percentage is really really bad. he was not the one in charge when all the hits came along. that was susan lyne i believe. she was responsible for housewives, lost, grey’s (developed by her and held till mis-season). (he did program grey’s after housewives which i give him credit for) even bachelor, extreme makeover, boston legal… and 20/20 and funniest videos have been around forever… all not his. everything else is. and everything else is pretty weak sans dancing, brothers and sisters and ugly betty. after 4 years he has very little to show for himself in terms of hits. unless i’m missing something. i actually like his attempts and shows that are different but nothing clicks.) Those are interesting facts that I did not know. McPherson probably fears that his biggest error was in signing so many Greg Berlanti dramas. None of them are that engaging to the average tv viewer. Truth be told, his shows are more likely to induce sleep. I think McPherson needs to plead with Mark Gordon and Jerry Bruckheimer productions for more shows. LOL. Peace!

  65. anima52 says:

I am enjoying Season 4 of Supernatural and I enjoyed the other 3 series as well. I like the change from many monster of the week episodes to more of a focus on an underlying story arc (and fewer motw eps.) The timing of this move in the 4th series is, I belive, an inspired one by Eric Kripke.

I hope that, during the hiatus, the CW airs selected repeats from the most recent 10 episodes, plus a couple of key episodes from past series that support the current story arc – wonder if they might do that? (Although DVDs can help any potential viewers, who’ve heard by word of mouth about the show, to catch up.)

tom, Steve McPherson had a hand in the development of “Housewives,” “Lost” and “Grey’s” as former head of the formerly-named Touchstone Television. This is the first and last nice thing I’m going to say about him, because he’s a bad scheduler, a bad developer, and a bad network chief in general. Lyne was worse, granted. I still get douche chills when I think of the disaster that was ABC’s Fall 2002 lineup. She should have been axed on the spot for unveiling that mess to advertisers. Half of the new shows were offensively bad and had no business being on the air, and — with maybe one exception (”8 Simple Rules”) — all of them were in the wrong time slots. It was like she was trying to destroy ABC.

McPherson deserves pretty much all the credit for ABC’s complete lack of half-hour sitcom hits. More than one person has told me that he’s pretty much ruined all of them with his “important” notes — which he gives at the very last minute and which conflict with all the other notes the execs below him have already given. The “In the Motherhood” webisodes were some of the funniest things I’ve ever seen (and I’m saying this as a bachelor, a dude, and a guy who can’t stand kids). By the time he’s done, expect every last funny thing about them to be meticulously stripped away and for the whole thing to stink worse than a load of dirty diapers.

Television shows that stunt cast turn me off. I used to watch How I Met Your Mother, up until Britney showed up on it. I haven’t watched it, nor do I have any desire to, since.

3 Thumbs up for this season of Supernatural (extra thumb for show’s motiff;-)My favorite part thus far this season was the Jensen Ackles one verse Music Video “Eye of the Tiger”. It was spontaneous in the fact it strayed from normal programming. It showed the real person behind the scenes and it was highly entertaining. The show itself, with Dean being scared of everything was all over YouTube the next week. I wished they would feature a little piece at the end of each show..”out-takes” if you will. No one seems to be above the cookie board.

As for the announced goodbye for Eli Stone, ABC is pulling another Men In Trees. ABC’s programming people are a group of sightless coin tosser’s who seem to have no ability to sense the pulse of American viewing. Eli Stone’s heart, references to God, doing the right thing…..too much for the Ultra-libs of Disney-ABC.

I know this is incredibly random but people say Heroes i not making money but:
an episode of Heroes costs: $4,000,000
A 30sec commercial on Heroes now costs: $198,379
So there are 9 30sec commercials each commercial break: with like 4 of these so.
    $198,379 x 9 = $1,785,411
    $1,785,411 x 4 = $7,141,644.
So doesn’t it make $3,141,644 profit an episode. Its already made back most of the cost for this falls season (13 episodes). With the cost of the 13 episodes being:
$52,000,000 and the profit from the latest ‘9′ episode being:
    $64,274,796.
Thats already a $8,274,796 profit with the next episodes all being profit. So how is it loosing money?

  70. Bill Gorman says:

Fin, I’d be very reluctant to create an income statement for any particular show based on publicly available advertising rates and the conventional wisdom number for how much a show costs. Those publicly available ad rates are likely good for nothing more than relative comparisons between shows, and rough ones at that. As for how much an episode costs, assuming the conventional wisdom number of $4m/episode for Heroes is correct in some fashion, that could mean so many different things that trying to fit it into a “is this show making money” calculation isn’t likely to be meaningful.

  71. Fin says:

    Thanks

  72. Nick C says:

HEROES is making money. It’s just not making as much money as it should be if things hadn’t fallen apart. HEROES isn’t in trouble until they drop below a 3.0 in the demo.

Smallville fans go to smallvilleimmortal.blogspot.com to learn how to keep Smallville alive.

  74. Joe Cool says:

Kitchen Nightmares would be better if Freddy Kruger showed up walking around making comments about the food and slicing and dicing slacker employees and annoying customers.

  75. Fin says:

E.C. smallville is not in any trouble: its CW’s top show. Or did you mean alive as in as good?

  76. Desilu says:

30 Rock’s stunt casting is pathetic. It is too bad that Fey did not allow the show to be an ensemble comedy.

  77. GRD says:

Fin, no hope of that — the show sucks eggs. It would take several major miracles to make it anything that even vaguely resembled good.

  78. Desilu says:

30 Rock is surreal in the way of how bad it is, and how cliche ridden and jokey it is. The Alec Baldwin Show with Tina Fey as the foil, Tracy Morgan as the edgy/jivey black guy (Venus Flytrap would kick his butt), Whatis his name as the virtuous page, and the Jane K as the dumb blonde…the people who like this show do so because they have been told by critics how hip and quirky they think the show is. Arrested Developement it is not.

Fey also needs to lose that mouth open shocked look bit that she has apparently trademarked.

  79. Desilu says:

In a good ensemble comedy the characters are fully developed, and equally strong, unlike the paper mache supporting cast on 30 Rock. Quantity does not make quality.

  80. Jesse says:

Emmy awards for both the show itself and the actors. Positive reviews from darn near every critic alive. Yeah, 30 Rock is just awful. *rolls eyes*

  81. Can you imagine if there was an Internet in 1972? People would’ve whined about the facial expressions Carroll O’Connor “trademarked” as Archie Bunker and we would’ve been subjected to dopey comments like “”OMG, REDD FOXX! Lose the whole “Elizabeth, I’m coming to join you!” thing already — it’s old!”

  82. Marissa says:

    Go Smallville!

  83. bartez says:

Will we ever know what was the final ratings (live+7) for Smallville – 8×10 Bride from 20th of November? I can’t found it anywhere :/
