Rosie Live, the Rosie O’Donnell variety show did even worse than I imagined it would. I knew for sure that Liza Minelli wasn’t going to be a huge draw for the 18-49 crowd, and I didn’t think the show was a great idea, but I still figured it would do better than 5.04 million viewers and a 1.2/4 (rating/share) among 18-49 year olds. The CBS comedy block of The New Adventures of Old Christine and Gary Unmarried pulled a 2.1/7, bettering Rosie Live by 75% in the 18-49 demographic.
Bones outperformed Rosie Live by 125% among 18-49 year olds.
I’m not sure there was ever any national love affair with Rosie, but if there was, it’s over. In the battle of Rosie vs. Barbara Walters, the old gal put a massive (massive!) beat down on Rosie. Though unfortunately they did not compete head-to-head, but at 10pm, the Barbara Walters Special averaged 11.65 million and a 3.0/9 among 18-49 year olds. When it comes to the battle of Rosie vs. Babs in primetime, at least as far as the ratings go, it’s game, set and match for Barbara Walters.
If it’s any consolation, Rosie had more viewers than the cancelled Pushing Daisies and beat it by a rounding sliver among 18-49 year olds (though with rounding, they both had a 1.2/4).
CBS’ Criminal Minds was the night’s most viewed show averaging 14.03 million and a 3.4/10 among 18-49 year olds.
This is the “Happy Thanksgiving” version, so there’s no show data table today, but if you want to check out the half hourly data, Marc Berman has it posted.

Once again, ABC is stupid for airing new episodes on a holiday. I can’t wait to see Grey’s ratings tomorrow.
For Criminal Minds don’t mean it averaged a 14.44 million viewers with a 3.5/10
Whoops, missed a word! *Don’t you mean*lol
D, no, I didn’t. That was only the 9:30pm hour. I used both the 9p and 9:30p half hours to come up with the numbers above.
stop bein so mean to pushing daisies >< it deserves so much more respect
Julia, my program guide shows all nets with specials and repeats tonight (Grey’s shows as a two hour rerun of the season premiere). Assuming that’s right, I think it could’ve been that last year Thanksgiving Day was included in sweeps. This year, sweeps ended last night. My guide could be wrong but CSI and Grey’s list as repeats, Survivor is a clips show, etc…
robert… i seriously doubt 5 mill for a badly conceived pre thanksgiving oddly guested variety show on a mostly unseen network is the determining factor on rosie’s life and career. i like her but in no way would i have watched that thing unless i was in the mood to see a car wreck. her in a talk show or as a comedian is fine but you could see that this thing was gonna bomb from miles away.
and to be fair the rest of nbc’s lineup was a dud. deal or no deal just did a tiny bit better.
yes robert… grey’s is a rerun
Move over NCIS, Rosie skews to the really really old!
Is NBC even trying any more? Rosie? Rosie looks like the love child of Michael Moore and Keith Olbermann. I stumbled across Liza and nearly threw up. I thought she was dead. Well she did look dead. Maybe Ned from Pushing Daisies brought her back to life after she OD’d on pills and booze?
Pushing Daisies is a good show but its just too different and artsy for the masses. As for it being on the day before a holiday, that really didnt matter much. If Barbara Walters can rack up nearly 12 million viewers at 10pm, the holiday excuse doesnt hold water. Hopefully PD is wrapped in a memorable way – its deserves that much.
Tom, you and I saw it as being a bomb from miles away but apparently Ben Silverman didn’t see it. Or perhaps he merely figured, “it couldn’t do any worse than Knight Rider!” If so, it turns out it could and did do worse. Last week KR had a 1.5/4 in the 18-49 demo in the overnights.
ABC should have just burned of a second episode of Pushing Daisies, which cannot fall much lower anyway, instead of throwing PP in front of the bus.
If Rosie got the total viewers NCIS did, her show could skew even older and it wouldn’t really matter.
robert… to be honest if i was forced at gunpoint to watch one or the other… KR or rosie live… i’d have to go with rosie… and that’s just at gunpoint.
but again… it’s not like the other shows on the net or the competition had 20 million to her 5. it was all mostly crap last night. her was crappier of course. even the “hit” shows were down.
if i were her i’d do a low budgeted variety show on logo. (that is not an insult as i am not against the homosexuals)
bones held up very well, i thought it might have suffered more thn it did, so im pleased. PD isn’t exactly ending on a high lol.
Rosie bombed.
Rosie fared poorly, eh? Since she went political, she’s been unbearable. I’m feeling a bit of Schadenfreude
The variety show idea could have worked, but not with Rosie at the helm. I give it 3 more weeks before NBC pulls it.
Corey, it was never planned as a regular thing. I think NBC had the option to order three more shows, but based on the numbers that seems (even for NBC) quite unlikely. I’m pretty sure there are not currently any additional airings scheduled.
I did not expect much out of Rosie’s special, but I gave it a chance. I wanted it to surprise me. BUT it was awful to watch. I cringed so many times during it, it was an embarassment to the performing arts. I really wanted to like it. It was just ridiculous and rosie did a horrible acting job.
My aunt must be misinformed then. She said there’s a 2 hour special for Greys tonight, but she must not have realized it’s a repeat.
That was the best episode of Private Practice last night.
Why?
I could end with that question.. but I will continue.
Why on earth would they give such a person a platform? Why have this show on their line-up of shows? It is an embarrassment and an insult to our viewer intelligence to have this woman host a show on that network. Controversy? I hardly think so. It is plain ignorance that they would allow her to be a part of an amazing network’s line-up. She can add nothing except a bump up of interest and then when it wanes.. she will fall and the show will fail. There will eventually be some issue or some outrageous controversial subject and she has a platform for her hatred and spewing her mouth full of disgusting views on things which simply make the public sick of it. We are tired of her beligerence. She is just not “with the times” nor is she “on target” with her views. The concept of the show is good but the host was the wrong choice by far. Time for another selection NBC. I surely won’t be tuning in.. nor will many of my colleagues. Simply NOT what that network should be about my friends.. simply the wrong choice for today’s point of view and an intelligent market. Pull the plug, I say. ..(and don’t give Rosie the satisfaction of a platform for her oversized mouth).
I watched the beginning of the awful Rosie thing. The audience barely laughed at her lame jokes! I quit at the point when she said she wasn’t going to talk politics but lied, as she promptly had the next thing to an onstage orgasm while reciting Barack Obama’s name. *click* *sees Bones on, watches that instead*
Julia, it was the last day of sweeps with out new episodes it would have been even worse, unless they scheduled a season movie. They have to rush out the episodes of the canceled shows, and 3 episodes of PP to synchronize it with GA because of the crossovers, so both shows return in January with the 11th episode. It was a necessity because PP is shooting 3 episodes ahead of GA. When they announced the crossovers they were already staring 2.14.
Too bad that a great episode got less eyes than usual.
There’s no new episodes of anything on tonight. I checked my DVR’s. Its all reruns. Whoever is saying there are new episodes tonight is wrong
Rosie O’Donnell once had a very good talk show and I’ve always liked Rosie because of her ability to keep Elisabeth Hasselbeck in check on ‘The View.’ So, I was looking forward to her new show, Rosie Live, but my God, was that bad! The corniest jokes, the most asinine skits, and the horrific song and dance numbers were all features of this unbelievably awful show. I don’t know any of the NBC decision makers but I can only imagine the embarrassment on their faces when they actually sit down and watch the full episode of the show. Maybe it was an aberration. If not, somebody better make sure the execs have puke cans next to the tv, when they watch it in wide screen high definition. (LOL) Seriouly, I’m not ever going to watch that crap again. Thank the Lord for basketball season! Hopefully NBC’s upcoming reality shows are better. At least they were smart enough to schedule alot of reality and variety type programming to get them through another strike season if and when it occurs. ‘Mommas Boys’ looks like it might be really funny and ‘The Superstars of Dance’ also could be good. Deal or No Deal will be back as well. Although, they ran it into the ground with a quickness by airing it 3 nights a week and basically all year round. Again though, they have the most reality programming heading into winter and that might be a good thing.
The problem with Rosie O’D is that she has reduced herself to a stereotypical caricature of the the obese, lesbian, loutish, loudmouth. She has talent but she continues to allow her private persona to overpower her star qualities. Didn’t we all like her better when she was just funny? What kind of bribe did NBC have to get Conan to do a cameo?
If one just takes a step back and considers the sexual ambiguities presented by the Liza / Rosie duet, it is just TOO complex (or hilarious) for logical interpretation. Liza, the gin-soaked, serial husband abusing beard for her purported gay and eSTRANGED husband shaking a tail feather with the dykey, bloated, blowhard Rosie just leaves so much to interpretation. A Rosie / Liza affair would keep Dr. Ruth, Dr. Phil, Dr. Joy, AND Dr. Drew busy for a decade at least.
Rave on Rosie at your own public peril. Rosie just does not possess the charisma to have it both ways. Her private versus her public persona are polarizing. I do NOT love her nor do I hate her but I can say that even with a compelling motive to watch that train wreck variety show, I just could not take more than five minutes of the program.
That door that Alec Baldwin presented Rosie… she should use it as an EXIT.
That lesbo Rosie is not popular anymore. I never liked her so im glad she flopped.
Pushing Daisies…ugh its just sad. But 4 million is ok enough for “the holidays” I guess.. :S
“Rosie” was an absolute abortion.
The worst set design, lighting, direction, writing that I have seen since “The Chevy Chase Show”. NBC has hit rock bottom with this.
I watched the show. Too cluttered. Rosie seemed uncomfortable in the forum. Also all the gay innuendo gets tiresome. (Thought the comedian on DWTSs brought the whole show down..might not go back next year-those who watch know what I mean)……Rosie should have spent more time with each act and gotten off anything political or controversial. Fans/general public have progressed. Now time for her to also. Get over it. Remember Quality, not quantity. Plus, since most stars were known before show, it was stupid to pretend they were surprises. Hello…She should go back to the drawing board and give us the old Rosie. Truthfully from a psychology standpoint, if she changes INSIDE it will show outside again. She is still angry. Go back to the drawing board and don’t do show until it pleases the public, not Rosie. I am older and I am not that into Liza Minelli.
How many viewers did Christine and Garry get on CBS. Where’s the Chart?
R.J.
Berman has it here:

Thanks Kevin, the link to that data is there, but it would seem people will do anything possible to avoid reading all the way through the text! I’m not sure I’m all that different…
I stumbled upon Rosie. It frightened the bejeebers out of me. I had to send my wife to Walgrens to get some eye bleach. I hope that they put that show to rest quickly. That woman can just go away and never be heard from again.
If they want to revive the variety show, let Fey do it. She could showcase her old Chicago buddies. What is Rachel Dratch up to now days?
What’s with all the NCIS mocking? Nice to see that agism is alive and well here. Its a great show that gets monster ratings, even with repeats. I watch it because Mark Harmon still has it all, because the writing assumes an intelligent viewer and there is wit mixed in with all the crime solving. Also thrilled that Bones did so well, too. Actually, its very similar in quality to NCIS…good characters and good writing.
Not surprised at all that Rosie bombed. She lost me when she came out on her old talk show with a bead strung on a chin hair she had let grow about 4 inches long and played with it for several minutes. Talk about a classic narcissist! NBC has really lost its mind putting her on. They fell for the hype from the View, HA! Serves them right. Anyone want to take bets on if HBO or MSNBC will give her a platform?
you can’t compare a “pilot” variety (risk) with Barbara Walters! Obama was the draw, not Barbara! how stupid is this public?
HAHAHA! NBC! KARMA IS A BIATCH! MAY ALL YOUR NEW SHOWS GET BAD RATINGS! THAT’S WHAT YOU GET FOR CANCELLING OUR FAVORITE SHOWS!!!! LJ SHOULD JUST BE ON HBO.
Kate, though I didn’t note it in the post — and definitely should’ve, clearly it was Obama that was the draw. However, The Barbara Walters specials typically have guests with appeal and perform well in the ratings. That’s not a new trend that was created as a result of the Obama appearance.
That said, Rosie Live didn’t perform well. That performance wasn’t a function of the Barbara Walters special in any way, but the ratings performance still was not good.
Oh wow! I hope this article is true!!
This means that NBC isn’t so stupid afterall ~ maybe?
I thought the show was initially a “done deal” and we would have to be put in pain each time we saw a preview or ad for the show (’cause I wouldn’t watch it)… but *sigh* thank heavens we won’t have to be submitted to any previews or ads again.
Rosie needs to find something else.. perhaps writing or directing. She needs to snuff out her need for being the “attention getter” and recede into the background. At least if she writes or directs, we won’t be submitted to her “in your face” kind of drama and we could watch..and/or.. read her if we so choose. Perhaps this could be a venue that would work as a career for her. (?) Just a thought.
I am no therapist.. but it seems she isn’t realizing that her beligerence is not something we want to have on TV. It seems she has a need to continue to create “situations”. Then she has fodder for her spewing out more cantankerous comments.
My sister used to have a saying that she would say whenever anyone got bent out of shape:
“Settle down woman..”
Rosie ~ I think this saying may apply.
Like I said – Rosie needed to be cancelled before it aired…
what is a Rosie O’donell?
@joecoll 27no
R doesnt look like the child of Michael Moore.
She is very talented & liked.
I do agree that Liza is scary 2 look @. Did she age badly or she had bad surgery? Her mother is okay looking.
Variety shows like hers dont work bc her stuff is postive.
2day’s tv watchers wanna laugh @ idiots so that is y that crap show “US Got Talent” is on.
BW only got 12mill bc of BO. The world loves BO.Look how great the 60min ratings were bc of who, BO.
