Sunday Saturday Ratings: ABC wins as Oklahoma bests Oklahoma State and awaits fate

ABC easily won another lame Saturday night of broadcast network television with the Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State game. Although it was a much closer contest (at least for most of the game) than last week’s game featuring Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma, last night’s game averaged over a million fewer viewers. Texas Tech was surely rooting for Oklahoma State, for had they won, Texas Tech and Texas would’ve been in a two-way tie, and the Big 12 handles that the old-fashioned way: head-to-head competition.

But that didn’t happen, and the way the Big 12 handles three way ties (Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma all have one conference loss) is…the BCS standings. Texas Tech has no chance from that perspective so Oklahoma and Texas wait on pins and needles to learn their fates at around noon 3pm late Sunday afternoon (eastern time).

If Texas gets the nod in the BCS standings, it will likely quiet BCS hating (at least among those who are not Texas Tech fans) since Texas beat Oklahoma head-to-head. But if Oklahoma edges out Texas, BCS hating could reach all-time highs. Update 11/30, 1:35pm PST: Oklahoma edges out Texas in the BCS standings and will play for the Big 12 title. Let the BCS hating begin!

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Julia says:

Sunday ratings? Have you guys turned psychic?

  2. I predict Detroit will lose next week…

  3. Matt says:

I could be wrong but it looks like CBS and FOX ratings were switched at the 8pm hour. Isn’t Cops a FOX series? If so, does that impact the total viewer average for those two networks?

  4. I put that there just for Julia, I can’t believe she let it slide

  5. Matt says:

I agree the BCS hating is definitely on the verge of reaching an all-time high. Now more than ever Americans are increasingly speaking out about their discontent with the bowl system. We shouldn’t have to continue to have a national champion in the top division of college football based on poll votes.

  6. Brian D says:

No matter what system you use whether it’s BCS or a playoff something can always be found wrong with it. In life you just can’t make everyone happy.

  7. Julia says:

I was just letting the others have a chance. ;)

  8. The allure of college sports, more than the games themselves, is the continued debate about who’s worthy of elite status and who’s not. As much as many would like an infallable solution, to paraphrase the title of former wrestling promoter Eric Bischoff, Controversy Creates Ca$h. It’s going to be quite a while until there’s a playoff.

  9. Title of the book, I meant. Damn multitasking.

  10. Nighthawk says:

Robert don’t jinx us……we’re going for broke. Four more games and we have a record! (Not a good record, but still ….. :) )

  11. Julia says:

Nighthawk, after Thursday’s game, I don’t think ANYONE can jinx us.

  12. Nick C says:

I bet this screw up causes a playoff. Sooner than most people think. The only thing that could have quickened the process any more would have been Notre Dame getting screwed. Texas getting screwed is major. They have an extremely strong alumni base. This was good for all college fans.
