Saturday Ratings: ABC, Oklahoma Win with Big 12 Conference Title Game

Posted on 07 December 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard ABC FOX CBS NBC
Total Viewers (million) 8.41 5.36 5.34 3.97
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 2.8/8 1.8/6 1.3/4 0.9/3

Though the Big 12 Conference Championship gamebetween Missouri and Oklahoma was never close in the second half, none of the other broadcast networks were close to ABC.

Note, the show data for Fox and the network averages for Fox do not seem in sync for the 18-49 demographic (if the show data is correct the net averaged a 2.0/6 for the night, factoring in rounding) but that’s the way Marc Berman reported the data, and we won’t see the report for Saturday until Monday morning.

Though there were some doubts whether the original intention for Crusoe was always to be a 13 part miniseries, there was no doubt based on its ratings that would be the case. And if there was the tiniest shadow of a doubt, it was removed when Crusoe was banished to Saturdays.

Still, last night’s numbers must make even NBC wince. Even on Saturday night if the numbers are worse than Quarterlife…ouch!

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Fin says:

Wow it sucks for NBC that Repeats of Law and Order whip Crusoe in veiwership and demos.

  2. Ben says:

    What is ‘48 hours mystery’?

  3. Ben says:

    Ah of course….google.

  4. Michael says:

How do stations decide what shows to show reruns of? For instance, I love The Unit, but I imagine CBS would have gotten higher ratings with CSI or NCIS, why not rerun those?

  5. Michael, in CBS’ case it’s a deliberate strategy. It’s their “Crime Time Saturday” block where they rotate reruns of their crime procedurals (CSI gets aired sometimes, too).

My best guess as to why they rotate them rather than stick with only a couple of shows they always rerun is that it has to do with rights for the number of times they can rerun episodes (before incurring some sort of ridiculous fees) since they also wind up needing to air reruns of those shows in their normal timeslots. But, it’s just a guess…

  6. cool says:

besides ABC, the others are not even trying to get some decent numbers.

  7. Ben says:

TK, i’d start working on trying to make pigs fly. Its ratings are too terrible for a petition to even be considered.

  8. Chris the TV sage says:

    As if ANY petitions matter.

But yeah, this one? Even less than zero chance.

  9. Joe Cool says:

People trying to save Crusoe are 100 times worse than those insane nuts trying to revive Jericho – again. What next? SAVE ROSIE LIVE???

  10. R.J. says:

I don’t even know why FOX keeps Cops and AMW around with the low ratings it gets. The Goverment must be paying FOX to keep AMW on with over 1078 people they brought in over 22 years.

  11. Michael says:

Thanks for the info Robert, that makes sense.
