CW Now Declining Noticeably vs. Last Season in Adults 18-34

Posted on 10 December 2008 by Bill Gorman

An interesting development this week is that the CW, which had done relatively well for adults 18-34 this season, is now down 4.9% vs. the 2007-8 season. Just a few weeks ago they were ahead in that demo vs. last season. And that’s slide is due to a fall in their 18-34 numbers this season, not a big increase last season. This trend will be interesting to follow forward.

The CW usually touts their progress vs. women 18-34, and I think Robert is waiting for some data on that from the CW, so we might see more information soon, but I have nothing right now.  Edit from Robert, still waiting on W18-34 data but the recent declines/and rate of decline aren’t particularly surprising, nor was earlier relative success.  The CW season was somewhat front-loaded this year vs. last year and so shows like America’s Next Top Model which were still airing at this time last year are already done this year, and there were more repeats the last couple of week’s than for the corresponding period a year ago.

After 11 weeks of the 2008-9 broadcast prime-time season (through December 7), all the major English broadcast networks continue to be down across the board vs. last season. Most recently though CBS seemed to be narrowing the losses, but since last week it slipped backwards going from a decline of 4.9% to a decline of 5.2% in the advertiser important adults 18-49 demo. In contrast, ABC, NBC and Fox all improved vs. last season’s 18-49 average in the past week, narrowing their declines.

This is all part of the long term decline of the broadcast networks as viewers switch to cable networks, as they’ve been doing for more than a generation.

My guess is that CBS, CW and ABC will begin to see some improvement vs. last season in early 2009 when prior year comparisons to the strike damaged portion of the 2007-8 season get a lot easier. NBC may be another matter, their results last season actually improved on a relative basis during the strike, but they have the Super Bowl this year, which will also lead to a huge spike in their averages making comparisons tricky.

MyNetworkTV (MNT) continues its significant growth over last season. They’re up drastically over last season, thanks mainly to the addition of Friday Night Smackdown!. Note just their numbers, because their bars are truncated. The scale for the other networks would be useless if I adjusted the scale for them.

Our chart shows broadcast network prime-time season to date average prime-time viewership for the 2008-9 season compared to the 2007-8 season. Click the image for a full sized chart.

  1. Gavin says:

Why single out the CW in your headline when the other 4 “big” networks have much bigger 18-34 drops than the CW?

  2. Joe Cool says:

Why is the focus on CW? Because Dawn “The Ostrich” constantly touts CW’s plan to rebuild the network based on the youth demo. Granted all networks seek out the youth demos but CW is constantly flapping its arms about it.

  3. Julia says:

Gavin, the reason is because up until this week CW didn’t look too bad in the 18-34 demo compared to last year. They were down by a sliver, that’s all.

  4. Bill Gorman says:

Gavin, Julia is correct. The only real “news”, something that’s noticeably changed in these season to date averages is the CW’s shift from growth in adults 18-34 as recently as 2 weeks ago, to a decline now.

Not just for CW, but for all networks (except maybe CBS), would the abundance of repeats factor into this recent decline? Granted, there were repeats last season too. Still, it’s not like the exact same weeks are repeats versus new, year-to-year. I wonder the effect.

  6. Tom says:

There have been a lot of repeats recently, even in November, and last years scheduling was non-standard. But aside from that, did we not expect ratings to be down after the strike? Weren’t the ‘88 declines even larger?

Personally, I continue to wonder why CBS Corp. doesn’t take its ball and go home, aka move Gossip Girl/Supernatural/ANTM to MTV, split the profits with WB, and kill the network.
It can’t be anything as simplistic as CBS Corp. has so few cable nets to train their execs on, so they throw them on the CW (can’t let them learn on the job given the profits to be lost at CBS/Showtime), can it?

  7. Bill Gorman says:

Tom, what will be most interesting to me is to see how the broadcasters season to date numbers look once we get to April. For at least some, the conventional wisdom is they’ll bounce back *above* the numbers from the strike damaged portion of the season. I don’t believe that. With the benefit of fall for hindsight, it looks like only CBS has a chance to reach its numbers from last season by the end.

  8. Gavin says:

OK guys, I get it now. I’m from the UK, so how your ratings work is so interesting. In the UK it’s only numbers. Demos are rarely looked at.

  9. Lynne says:

Well, this 30-something female did not watch Supernatural (got addicted on the dvd’s) or Privileged or Stylista last year but I am this year. Maybe others like me ages 35-39 have increased??

  10. Gojou says:

The CW needs to a scorch earth approach…this network will be a dump yard in a few season.
