Wednesday Ratings – CBS Romps But Millionaire’s No Secret

Posted on 11 December 2008 by Bill Gorman

Scoreboard CBS NBC FOX ABC Uni CW
Total Viewers (million) 12.030 5.980 5.853 5.679 4.285 1.263
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 3.3/9 1.8/5 2.2/6 1.9/5 1.6/4 0.5/1
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 2.0/6 1.4/4 2.0/6 1.6/5 1.7/5 0.6/2

While to no one’s surprise, CBS dominated the night from 9-11 and overall had the most average viewers and adults 18-49, Fox’s Secret Millionaire was the surprise of the night, winning both demos from 8-9 and improving its demos noticeably from last week when it faced off against Rudolph.

After 9 it was all CBS, with both Criminal Minds doubling and CSI:NY coming close to doubling the viewership of the #2 shows in the hours. Their demo performance wasn’t quite as dominating, but it was close.

With Jay Leno taking 5 hours of prime time next fall, Life’s 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo is nowhere near good enough to keep it around as NBC will have a big knife out this spring to pare down to 10 programmed hours from Monday-Friday. Sadly, and I write this as a fan, Law & Order’s uptick last week may have been an aberration as it settled back badly this week.

Sorry for the short comments today, we’re dealing with a combination of hardware failure and schedule squeeze this AM.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Johnthemon says:

I have to say I’m surprised at Secret Millionaire’s success.

Has anyone else noticed the ratings wasteland that Wednesday night’s are becoming? Think about it

    Pushing Daisies-Canned
    Dirty Sexy Money-Canned
    Private Practice-Needs an uptick
    Life-Doomed
    Law and Order-Doomed
    Gary Unmarried-Doomed
New Adventures of Old Christine-In Hot Water

So in the exception of UNI, it looks like a bad place to be ratings-wise.

But, we’ll get American Idol and Lost midseason and the place will come alive. So why so bad-looking now?

  2. Johnthemon says:

    EDIT

Put Christine down for “Doomed” as well.

  3. StraHOTski says:

Good news for Chuck fans, the whole Wednesday night lineup for NBC looks it’s going to be dumped. L&O probably will head to USA network next season.

Law & Order: SVU on Wednesday at 9pm while Chuck moves in 8pm.

  4. Cam says:

WHY THE HELL DIDN’T ABC TRY PUSHING DAISIES IN A DIFF TIME SLOT OR ON A DIFF DAY

ITS VIEWERS HAS INCREASED EVERY WEEK

    NOV 19TH-4.86 MILLION 1.8/5
    NOV 26TH-4.45 MILLION 1.2/4
    DEC 3RD-4.91 MILLION 1.5/4
    DEC 10TH-4.96 MILLION 1.6/5

    ABC SHOULD BE DOOMED

THEY KILLED DAISIES NOT THE RATINGS

  5. Frank says:

    ^^ gotta love opinions

  6. StraHOTski says:

Shuffling Pushing Daisies around won’t make it any better. The 8-9 month writer’s strike hiatus is the thing that killed it. Out of state, out of mind.

  7. Ana says:

The whole wendesday night is just dead. PD is in such a horrible day. If PD gets canned, they all should get canned. But who am i talking to here? Those monkeys who run ABC is not gonna hear me.

  8. Andrea says:

I love Life :( It’s too bad that this show is overlooked. I can already hear the DVD critic saying, “This high quality, little watched procedural about a Zen-practicing, revenge-seeking lawman stars the brilliant Damian Lewis, gains new life (no pun intended) on DVD”.

Maybe NBC should throw in the towel. It’s seems to be the network viewers flee like a rabid skunk.

  9. Andy McNab says:

All you Daisy fans……Did you ever consider the show just sucked!!!!????

  10. Watch Chuck says:

Whoa! Daisey does not suck. I haven’t seen any of season 2’s episode (will watch on DVD), but it is a good quality show. It is just too different for everyone’s taste.

  11. john t. says:

considering we’re fans of the show, no, pushing daisies didn’t suck.

  12. T says:

Clearly not many agree with you, or the show would have been a hit instead of quickly fading into oblivion.

  13. Chris the TV sage says:

    “We’re” ? This isn’t a PD fansite.

  14. Arnold says:

Well Im happy to see Daisies finally beat NBS’s crappy specials and Old Christine in demos. About time! And yet Christin is still on the air, and Daisies gets the ax…I don’t get TV.

  15. ANIL says:

Oh yeah. TV is full off those crappy doctors and reality series…THEY ROCK but Daises SUCKS with its 30 nominations and emmy wins. Its your opinion but You have no right to say that with all PD fans being here. Be respectful!

  16. john t. says:

nobody said this was a PD fansite. i was just speaking on behalf of the fans.

  17. Chris the TV sage says:

Its your opinion but You have no right to say that

That is the PD-fan mindset in print, right there.

  18. idizzle says:

Do we really have to have this Pushing Daisies discussion every week? It gained viewers? From a starting point of a 1.2 demo? Are you kidding me? Are we really laughing at ATJ’s ratings each week and then turn around and praise Daisies for going from 4.5 million viewers to 4.55?

As for the quality, it doesn’t outright suck, at least not what little I saw of it, but why must you always pretend it’s just too awesome for the dumb American public. Apparently Moonlight, Jericho, Drive and Pushing Daisies are in their own league of awesome that nobody can even bear to look at.

I loved Jericho and I’ll cry for Life, but damn does that attitude annoy me.

  19. Cam says:

    http://www.thepiemaker.com

ALL PD FANS lets get over there and shove it up them ABC BASTARDS

  20. Chris the TV sage says:

idizzle: Apparently Moonlight, Jericho, Drive and Pushing Daisies are in their own league of awesome that nobody can even bear to look at.

You forgot the Greatest Show Ever ™, Veronica Mars.

I even WATCH Pushing Daisies, but I want it cancelled just so these people will go away.

  21. tom says:

why don’t you all stop being a-holes and mean to each other. what the hell is the point of that? why insult someone for liking a show? it’s not like it’s been gone for 6 months. it was on last night. it always hurts to lose a favorite show. why don’t you just be nice?

  22. idizzle, well said. Fortunately I believe that most fans of shows are like you. I would imagine that even in the cases of Jericho, Moonlight, and Pushing Daisies (I’m sure Bill’s already busy trying to quantify which show will be next in that lineage) that the bulk of the fandom is made up of reasonable people who are merely disappointed that a show they enjoyed got cancelled and move on.

But unfortunately, when it comes to participation, the “downtrodden” and those who like to rankle the downtrodden pretty much ensure we will have to have this discussion at least a while longer. It won’t just arise as the last PD episodes are aired, the commentary/analysis of its replacement will fuel discussion for at least a few weeks. If its replacement does better, the “kick em when their down” crowd will chime in with “See! A haha!” If the replacement does worse you’ll get “see, it’s the time slot”.

hopefully by March or so we’ll not have to hear about it anymore.

  23. Julia says:

Chris, don’t you realize that PD getting canceled means the crazies flock here? It’s horrible. :(

  24. Chris the TV sage says:

Robert: (I’m sure Bill’s already busy trying to quantify which show will be next in that lineage)

    It’s clearly Dollhouse.

  25. Steve C says:

OMG private practicce is doing terribly lol. hey does anyone know if ABC will air all 13 eps of pushing daisies? i know its on next week but will ABC bring it back for 3 more eps?

  26. S. says:

Funny how the PD fans are the spitting image of the show. Annoying, conceited, and delusional about it’s worth. PD does worse in the demo than Cuidado on el Angel? Ouch.

They got all the Emmy nods because of the novelty, it was a graphically beautiful show that was easily remarkable, but had no substance. One year later and not even a nod in the Golden Globes.

  27. Amy says:

Secret Millionaire tells a lot of lies about the areas they visit to make them look worse than they are. Imperial Beach was really pissed off about it. They showed shots of trash from places not inside the city limits which were probably from the Tijuana river bed and gave poverty level figures that were higher than the total population of the city.

There’s also been warnings that the people who get the money handouts could lose Social Security amounts equal to the amount they receive and get bumped into a higher tax bracket, etc., so they aren’t going to end up any better off.

  28. Steve C says:

oh and i forgot to ask 2 will is sam who on a break till january?

  29. Chris the TV sage says:

Steve C: the next ep of SW? is scheduled for January 12.

  30. idizzle says:

“I would imagine that even in the cases of Jericho, Moonlight, and Pushing Daisies (I’m sure Bill’s already busy trying to quantify which show will be next in that lineage) that the bulk of the fandom is made up of reasonable people who are merely disappointed that a show they enjoyed got cancelled and move on.”

But it’s always the ones fighting for the show to be saved or moving to a new new network or cable home (because that happens so often), who display this “our show is too good or you” attitude and I would like them to take note that implying I am to dumb to follow a show that has a narrator spelling out the premise at least twice per episode is not making me more inclined to to tune in and give it a chance. So, re-think the strategy, it’s all I ask.

  31. BIG DADDY says:

I think all 5 of the PD fans post here…. now if you had 10 ppl the show might be saved… * chuckles * :)

  32. Jenna says:

    S..

    why nominate a canned show????

I am huge PD fan, but let’s face it . It’s over and done, a season too soon in my opinion, but done it is. Bryan Fuller has moved back to Heroes, so there is no chance of another network picking it up.

Move on people there is nothing to see here.

So what if my heart breaks in 4 weeks….

  33. idizzle, I’m a big believer in “technology advances rapidly, human nature…not so much.” Though I understand and agree with you, how people act when they’re upset and sensitive is not anything I expect to change in my lifetime.

  34. Frank says:

Its really going to get unbearable here when Life, TSCC, and Dollhouse all get cancelled :(

  35. john t. says:

i’m bookmarking this website. i like the discussions here much more that zap2it.

  36. Dave says:

Really happy that Old Christine won the 8 o’clock time-slot and hit a season high! Maybe there is some hope among the mire.

Why is it that Daisies is the only show ever talked about on the Wednesday ratings? There are a whole bunch of other shows on… that aren’t canceled. I just feel like we have the same conversations each week!

  37. Joe Cool says:

At least Pushing Daisies beat out Cuidado on el Angel!

People continue to blame breaks for the failure of a show. The problem is the show itself. If people really liked it enough they would pick it up when it returned no matter how long it was. The problem with shows like Pushing Daisies is that eventually the novelty wears off. Though I still watch it, I find my myself channel surfing while its on.

  38. Dalz says:

The only reason Private Practice is suffering is because of the awful lead-in!! It is the strongest ABC show for the night and BOTH shows either side of it are ruining it’s ratings!!

  39. R.G. says:

NBC – will be the New “CW” next year – Leno is good for late night – and he may do good for a while but he’s over rated for prime time –
I think CBS should put all their CSI’s at 10pm/9c and
eliminate Leno and his poor whiny/speech slurring comments once and for all!

Leno saying retire means retire -

  40. Joe Cool says:

After the JERICHO experiment by CBS failed there is zero chance of any network listening to cult like fan groups to bring the show back. The only chance any show will have is if when the DVD is released millions of them are sold like was the case with FAMILY GUY. Thats it. No amount of peanuts, sunflower seeds, Mars candy bars, or other food item will give a show a 2nd chance. I suspect when the Friday Night Lights effort flops early next year it will only put the final nail in the coffin of Save A Show fan groups.

  41. Matt says:

RG, thats a good idea about CBS putting all the CSIs against Leno. Throw in NCIS and The Mentalist too and kill him 5 nights a week. I haven’t been able to understand Leno’s appeal for years. The show is terribly unfunny, I used to watch when I was a kid then was I was about 13 I switched to Letterman and have been a fan since. Going to NY in January and put in a request for tickets to a taping, I hope I can get in!

  42. Matt says:

Also Robert/Bill, any news on the ratings for Estate of Panic and Cha$e on SciFi? Both incredibly cheesy but I find myself watching every week and highly entertained. Both just premiered and both have their season finales next week. Did SciFi just produce 6 episodes of each to see how they’d do? I wouldn’t think a reality show would need to be a HUGE success on SciFi to get renewed, any ideas? Love the site by the way, got the link off drudgereport and now I check it daily.

  43. Ricardo says:

They gotta be kidding me! With a lead-in like that how would Life have a chance?!? If they put it in a good time slot the show could have good ratings! If Life was on CBS it would be an hit!

  44. Anna says:

I find it equally annoying how people bash everything good said about PD.
I did a poll around my school and the majority said that they have heard many good things about PD they just never know when to watch it.

  45. Thanks, Matt. there’s not any overnight reporting for cable shows and the only way the next day is usually if the network itself issues a press release (didn’t see one yet). Last week Estate did 1.297 million on Weds, and Cha$e 1.127 on Tuesday. it’s not information we typically would likely post, but if you post a comment on next week’s top cable shows post as a reminder I’ll try to post this week’s info:

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/category/ratings/nielsen-top-cable-tv-show-ratings

  46. idizzle says:

Ricardo, Life would undoubtedly do so much better on CBS with a companion procedural to prop it up, but would it be a hit? CBS cancels shows like Shark and soon probably Eleventh Hour because they can. Whatever they plaster onto the tailend of CSI or NCIS will bring in 12 million easily.

  47. Bri says:

    Cam,
I’d imagine PD is an expensive show to run and the numbers aren’t even borderline good. It’s a total bomb. Brilliant pilot, brilliant cast, and the couldnt keep it up. ABC is better off with LOST reruns.

  48. Kyle says:

I agree that Wensday is a horrible death day. Both Fox comedies were canceled, and both CBS comedy’s are gonna be dumped soon. What a horrible predicament.

  49. Andrea says:

“Ricardo, Life would undoubtedly do so much better on CBS with a companion procedural to prop it up, but would it be a hit?”

We don’t know. On CBS, Life could be another Eleventh Hour, or it could be another The Mentalist, which is a hit in its own right, but only after being paired with NCIS initially.

  50. Ben says:

I’m wondering that although Law and Order is on the bubble, they will keep it going for at least another year to make it the longest (drama was it?) on air beating Gunsmoke. Would be a good selling point. Or it might make people realise how old the show is. Could go either way. But it’s still a good show. Sell it to USA if they have to make way for other shows, but keep it going.

  51. RViewer says:

All this talk about not having a good lead-in to explain Private Pratice and Life failure is pretty weak. Look at Criminal Minds its lead-in isn’t doing that great, if you look at the cancel index on this site both Gary Unmarried might be canceled. So when it come to lead-ins there is much better out there like say NCIS to the Mentalist. Still Criminal Minds is doing great without a good lead-ins.

  52. Brandon says:

I just love the notion that a hiatus “kills” series’. Come on. Guess what? “Pushing Daisies” wasn’t on for something like “ever” before it’s first episode aired. That eternal “hiatus” didn’t kill it’s first episode. Given the whole “viewers forget about series if they are off to long” theory, some explantion has to be given how any new series ever gets people to watch the first episode. Let’s see…. was there some kind of promotion/hype generated prior to it’s first episode that didn’t occur prior to it’s season two premiere?

People making the “Life”/”CBS” comments…. another good example of a failed NBC show that became a hit by moving to CBS is “JAG”. Cancelled after one season on “NBC”, did huge for “CBS” for 9 years and spun off “NCIS”. I wonder if Moonves sends NBC a “thank you” card every week.

  53. Yelida says:

Wow why cant ABC just cancel Private Practice as well? All 3 showss numbers SUCK.
Or LEAVE WEDNESDAYS alone and let all 3 of the show continue on til MAY — especially PD. :)

ABC is runned by chimpanzees. =)

  54. John says:

Does anyone know, How to save a “Life”.

  55. cool says:

Yelida, ABC will not cancel PP because is growing of that awful leadin always. PP is a decent show but when your lead in is only 1.4 or 1.5 in the demo, to grow almost 100% is very impressive.

  56. idizzle says:

Brandon, wasn’t JAG a CBS Paramount produced show that was sold to NBC from the beginning though? I am not saying that explains its sudden success on CBS, but it might explain why CBS could afford to pick it up.

As much as I love Life and think it’s a better show than The Mentalist in quality, it’s not going to be picked up by an outside network any more than Pushing Daisies is. Unless maybe post-Monk USA is really really desperate and that would still be in house and assuming Life is cheap to make.

  57. idizzle says:

“We don’t know. On CBS, Life could be another Eleventh Hour, or it could be another The Mentalist, which is a hit in its own right, but only after being paired with NCIS initially.”

That was my point exactly, Andrea. I just pointed out that a while CBS has better lead ins to give, that also raises the bar and 8-10 million won’t save it anymore to Ricardo, who seemed so sure of it.

  58. clutz12001 says:

@Joe Cool: “I suspect when the Friday Night Lights effort flops early next year it will only put the final nail in the coffin of Save A Show fan groups.”

If FNL flops, it flops because the ROI was not enough for DTV to continue investing in it. It won’t flop because of “poor ratings” or “failed Save Our Show efforts.”

I see DirecTV is premiering its next scripted show in January – “Wonderland.” It’s a controversial failed series from ABC, circa 2000. As it’s another Peter Berg creation, they must like his work in FNL enough to re-air his older stuff:
    http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6621420.html?industryid=47200

  59. Heradite says:

For the record: I love Jericho. I am a Jericho fanatic. I want it to come back and have fought for it. It’s the only show. I though do realize that it didn’t get the viewers. Not because it was to good for Americans though, or to awesome. That’s total bs. I can blame marketing cause so few people even know it exists, but I actually blame the kind of genre it was. It was a serial drama, and if you missed some episodes it’s really annoying to have to catch up-no matter how good it is. People simply aren’t always willing to give up their valuable time to keep up with a show.

  60. izabela says:

Too bad the networks don’t consider the public outside US, because we buy stuff from our favorite shows the same way americans do, but we don’t get a chance to see our shows getting renewed…even if they are successuful in our countries…oh well…i think we have to get used to American Idol and Dancing With the Stars forever…i miss television when reality shows didn’t exist… =((

  61. Ricardo says:

I think Life would be an hit show on CBS because it actually is an awesome show. In my opinion, Life is better than any procedural CBS has on the air, including The Mentalist. I think that with a proper lead-in it would have, at least, a chance. For example, last week Life had a good lead-in and it did more than 8 million.

I really like the show, it has quality and I think that with a good slot and a good lead-in it could do better ratings.

  62. April's First Post says:

How can no one see this but me…

Pushing Daisies has nearly twice the ratings of Smallville.

Pushing Daisies numbers would be a “hit” on the CW.

Pushing Daisies type show is exactly what the programming head honchos want to gear their entire line up towards.

I will be the first to try to rally the troops…let’s send daisy seeds to the CW…
    Anyone with me?

  63. Bill Gorman says:

April, assuming you’re not just trolling, and I am bored enough today to respond anyway, and leaving aside the futility of post-Jericho “Save our Show” efforts, your basic premise of “Pushing Daisies has nearly twice the ratings of Smallville.” is simply wrong. (so, in fact no one but you *can* see it)

    Through last Sunday:
Pushing Daisies 18-49 avg. 2.419 million
    Smallville 18-49 avg. 2.128 million

And Pushing Daisies airs on a network (ABC) that averages almost 3 times the 18-49 adults as Smallville’s CW.

  64. KellyH says:

This thread is old and probably won’t get a response (I posted on last week’s after everyone had moved on), but I will say again that the only thing that really offends me as a PD fan in the wake of its cancellation is when people go on about how it “wouldn’t have gotten a second season without the strike” and then act like fans should be grateful that it did. Assuming there was no strike, the end result would have been the same as strike+second season–22 total episodes. So those kind of comments really are a slap in the face.

I also don’t see the lower ratings for last year’s December episode (the last one) as a sign of things that were coming. The penultimate episode with Molly Shannon drew over 10 mil. and it was on an hour later. And that December episode did draw more than any of them have this season.

The strike is the most convenient thing to blame for Daisies’ demise, and I choose to blame it simply because it makes me feel better. But I got no sympathy for Fuller either because he wholeheartedly supported the strike. At least it was a cautionary tale for the SAG members who are now against a strike.

  65. PUSHING DAISIES IS AMAZING! says:

I’m not exactly sure where my earlier comment disappeared to, sorry if i drew too much attention by the = & – signs but it’s not right to bash another person’s show!! LONG LIVE PUSHING DAISIES!!!!!!!!!!!

  66. James says:

They are moving Private Practice to Thursday after Grey’s, maybe that will get ratings up, plus the multiple crossover story arc between the two shows should devintely get ratings up.
