Friday Ratings: CBS wins with ‘Frosty’ numbers

Posted on 13 December 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard CBS FOX NBC ABC CW
Total Viewers (million) 7.57 5.76 5.31 4.48 1.27
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 2.2/7 1.3/4 1.4/4 1.3/4 0.5/2

We don’t get the data reports over the weekend and get them via Marc Berman so I won’t see the actual results until Monday. It appears the average for Fox, for example are wrong (I get a higher average if I use the show data). It seems unlikely Wife Swap and Supernanny had the exact same results in viewers (though not so unlikely when it comes to 18-49 year old viewing).

Last Friday’s results.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

    Thumpety thump thump
    Thumpety thump thump
    Look at Frosty go

Having read that 1 million times in the past week, it begged to be written here ;)

  2. R.J. says:

Frosty did good for CBS, but the FOX game shows still did the same.

  3. Michelle says:

ONLY 2 LIPSTICK JUNGLE LEFT NOW

still tbh im not suprised with those numbers and the numbers it pulled on wednesday’s

still i am sad at its passing

  4. cool says:

what happened to Wifeswap and Supernnany? they were averaging 1.8 in the demo

  5. Fin says:

Wow, Dateline did so much better than last week: Lipstick Jungle is just writhing; Dateline will proberly move to 9pm and lipstick to 10pm. That would be best for NBC.

  6. Ben says:

I can’t believe so many people are watching reruns of Christmas specials/movies. Or perhaps it’s a different 6-8m people every week watching them.

  7. Tony says:

Yet again Numb3rs pulls in only what was on before it.

  8. Bill Gorman says:

Ben, there are almost 41 million children 2-11 in US TV households. Add in a parent watching, and those Christmas special numbers don’t surprise me at all. As for them being reruns, I’m guessing you don’t have children. Reruns aren’t any deterrent at all for them.

  9. Mike G. says:

I’m not surprised that people are watching reruns of old Christmas specials. Look at what they are on against!

  10. Ben says:

Yeah i suppose, that and it’s summer now where i live.

  11. Alex S. says:

    I love the Christmas specials!

  12. Lisa says:

Look, *I* watched Frosty and Frosty Returns last night, and I’m an adult! I’ve watched them many times, rarely missing a year. Holiday tradition.

  13. Don says:

For the record Frosty Returns is NOT really a sequel to the Frosty The Snowman special. Frosty Returns was produced by CBS and was produced in the early 1990’s. The real sequel is “Fosty’s Winter Wonderland” which first aired in 1976. But anyway the phoney sequel Frosty Returns will air for years to come.

    FYI.

    Let Their Be Snow.

  14. Johnthemon says:

So… if there was anyone left out there still trying to save Lipstick Jungle…I think this is there que to give up.

Fridays look more and more pathetic every week. Terminator will fail even worse Friday than it did on Monday. That’s my prediction, on a show that never really earned my interest.

  15. sdfsf says:

^ If a show never really “earned your interest” – then why are you bringing it up?

  16. David4 says:

Frosty Returns did better than Frosty the Snowman!?!

  17. Joe Cool says:

The should produce FROSTY 3: The Terminator Chronicles where Frosty is revealed to be a T-X liquid metal terminator secretly building SKYNET at the North Pole!

    Happy Birthday, indeed.

  18. Don says:

“Frosty Returns did better than Frosty the Snowman!?!”

Like I said this phony special will run for many years to come. Do the kids really care???

  19. Don says:

“The should produce FROSTY 3: The Terminator Chronicles where Frosty is revealed to be a T-X liquid metal terminator secretly building SKYNET at the North Pole!”

    Love It!!!

  20. Denise says:

Lipstick Jungle still has a chance. Friday night this week was horrible. Everyone is out Christmas Shopping and at parties. I will watch it via my DVD recording. The ratings aren’t far off from Supernanny, etc. Hang in there….Fight for it!!!!
