CBS dominated the night with it’s 8pm-10pm comedy block and CSI: Miami. Averaging 13.64 million viewers, CBS nearly doubled its closest competition for the night, NBC. CBS also easily took the 18-34 and 18-49 year old demographics. Update: all four CBS comedies hit season or series highs.
The CW aired repeats and ABC went with I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown and two hours of 20/20.
Meanwhile over at NBC, Chuck improved by over half a million viewers over last week’s overnight report and there was a small improvement with the 18-49 demographic as well. I went to see if “savechuck.com” was available and it redirects to a site that rents mansions in Mexico. WTF?! Damn you, Fulcrum…
With 7.78 million Heroes was flat week over week with almost exactly the same numbers as last week’s overnight report though it was down slightly among 18-34 year olds. The volume 3 finale did not pick up any additional viewers, but I guess the good news is it didn’t really lose any either.
Both The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother cleared 11 million viewers and had over a 4.0 among 18-49 year olds. It’s very impressive how well CBS’ 8pm-9pm block has come along.
Fox ran the mid-season finale of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles which also had numbers almost identical to last week’s. TSCC pulled in 5.29 million average viewers and a 2.0/5 among 18-49 year olds. Both slight improvements versus last week. Prison Break improved more, adding over 300,000 viewers vs. last week to average 5.74 million.

Nielsen TV Ratings: ©2008 The Nielsen Company. All Rights Reserved.
Definitions:
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)
Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

YAY CHUCK!
Are the numbers for Two and a half men correct?
I mean 17M is a bit too much.
BTW I’m very happy for the sitcom block on CBS. My only wish would be that CBS switched Gary Unmarried or Christine from Wednesdays to Worst week’s slot.
go chuck!!!!!
ABC needs to step up and give better shows geeze.
Yes Chuck!!!! Watch out Heroes were catching up..lol..hahahaha
Unfortunately, I think that the viewers that Heroes lost are either gone for good or are watching the show via some other medium. The finale last night was good; not great, but good. It tied up some loose ends while leaving some intriguing questions for the next arc. Hopefully, the extended hiatus won’t cause the show to lose any more viewers.
I don’t know who told abc that those silly high school musical crap works on Modays please.
Worst Week with over 12 million! Has it been picked up for a full season yet?
Yay for Chuck best ratings all season. Boo to NBC for taking it off the air for 6 weeks.
Glad to see so much of the Buy More last night. Chuck is a fun show to watch. Bet CBS is glad they stuck with HIMYM. That show always seemed to be on the bubble. These types of shows could really be money makers in sindication and DVD sales given enough time to catch on.
If Two and a half Men can clear 15 million with a repeat and considering that yesterday was the Emilio Estevez episode (this means something to us over 25, okay?), I wouldn’t doubt the numbers actually.
Yay for Chuck!
Nothing suprising either way about T:SCC’s numbers.
Chuck is certainly catching up with Heroes total audience, but not in the demo.
Yesterday night’s episode of Chuck was absolutely OFF-DA-HOOK!!! One of the best episodes of the series. There was twists and turns and one killer ending (no pun intended). I laughed my a$$ off when I saw Emmett plugging Buy More in the TV interview after escaping the hostage crisis. You also gotta love the homage to Family Matters – having Carl Winslow play Big Mike’s Cousin.
It nice to see Chuck improve but how in the heck did BBT manage to pull 4.2 in the demos?
The numbers for Two and a Half Men are correct or at least, there was no data entry error on my part. The numbers are corroborated between independent data sources.
Throw a Shoe, it wasn’t an homage to Family Matters, but to his role in Die Hard (Al Powell). Definitely a huge throwback though!
Both Big Bang and Chuck were tremendous last night!
“I have Leonard Nimoy’s DNA?!!”
Hilarious!
without competition cbs achieve season highs between 8 to 10 pm i think.
worst week should be replace by a better sitcom. rules of engagement or crhistine do better.
Worst week really milks that lead in. It should be moved to Wednesday and they should give Gary a shot at 9:30. I’d like to see CBS expand their sitcom offering to a full 2 hours on Wednesday next fall. They’re really good at building successful sitcoms. Look at how the ratings for BBT and HIMYM have improved over last year. Obviously they would keep 2.5 men in its slot and they could move BBT or HIMYM(now established hits with an audience that’ll follow) to the wed. at 9 slot to anchor the new hour.
I thought Two and Half Men was awesome, nice to Charlie’s brother Emilio again. I turned off Heroes along time ago. Chuck keeps getting better and better, your comment about Fulcrum made me laugh. I hope it doesn’t get cancelled either.
CBS made a great decision to keep HIMYM around! As a long time fan. I was always frustrated (though understanding) about how wishy-washy CBS was about keeping it around, but the writing has been consistently great, the show has been increasingly buzzy, and now it’s clearing 11 million viewers with no special guest stars or gimmicks?! Amazing! Watch out Office, there’s a new sheriff in town! (I don’t count the travesty that is Two and a Half Men…)
Does anybody know when Prison Break returns after episode 16 next monday
ive heard confilcting reports with some saying January 2009
and others saying it could be as late as between March-April 2009
CHUCK!!! That was a good episode for them to get those ratings. It was really good. Too bad there’s no more new episodes until February… When it’s up against House…
@Peter
Definetely not January, probably April 2009
PB was really affected this season by SCC’s poor showing. It would’ve done much better at 8pm its usual time slot
Grady, HIMYM have stunt-cast before: Britney Spears. But I don’t blame them for that move, they were on the bubble and had to do whatever necessary to survive. Great to see HIMYM get the ratings it deserved — now it needs to dethrone Two & a Half Men. That show is so played out (same oral sex jokes here, same masturbation jokes there) and the kid is no longer cute —he suddenly can’t act and seem just awkward.
Great episode of Chuck! Nearly match Heroes in total viewers but needs to crank up the demos. The special Super-Bowl-fueled 3D episode should give Chuck a boost.
HEROES appears to have bottomed and is safe since its key demo numbers remain high enough to ensure it will return next fall. Though I expect alot of deaths this Spring as they reduce the budget. This weeks episode was better than average.
TSCC? It too leveled off but its numbers are too low and will be cancelled after the Spring run and its usefulness as a promotional tool for TERMINATOR 4 will be at and end. Its an ok, show but when it ends I wont care much, its too much off the beaten path or the Terminator franchise.
As for thinking Prison Breaks problem is due to TSCC thats a stretch. PB had the same sort of lackluster numbers last season. Atrributing an established shows success or failure to its lead-in is highly exaggerated. If it was a brand new show, maybe, but not a show thats been on for over 3 years. Fact is PB just isnt the show it was in Seasons 1 and 2. I didnt watch Season 4 beyond episode 1. No Prison-No Break-no dice.
dave, do you see CBS cancelling either of their succesfull Wednesday crime dramas this season? I can see them canning Eleventh Hour and WAT, but why would they waste a post NCIS/Mentalist or post CSI spot on an already working procedural with its own audience?
It just seems unlikely they’d expand their Wednesday comedy block as long as that means moving Criminal Minds. Not to mention that CSI NY would probably do a lot worse than CSI Miami does, if they ended up with a weak half hour like Worst Week in the 9.30 slot.
Also another HIMYM stunt-cast: Enrique Iglesias early in season 3 as Robin’s rebound and maybe Wayne Brady (if you consider him a star) as Barney gay brother.
Glad to see the great numbers for 2 1/2 Men. That is still the best comedy on TV. Worst Week is panned way too much here. The show is not as awful as people say.
Hooray for Chuck too. That show needs to come back for Season 3!
The comedies on CBS are fantastic! Going into this season, I hadn’t regularly watched a sitcom since “Friends” left the air more than four years ago. Then this summer some friends kept recommending that I watch HIMYM so I did. Never did I expect that it would be sandwiched in between two equally hilarious shows. Although I had seen 2.5 men here and there, I didn’t really ever appreciate just how funny it actually is until now. Along with Survivor on Thursdays, the Monday night shows on CBS from 8 to 9:30 are the only live primetime I watch.
As for the quality of last nights shows, while all very funny, I give the edge to Big Bang, which is quickly becoming my favorite of all three. Although I haven’t given Worst Week a shot just yet, I just might next time around cause I caught the commercial of him kissing his father in law under the missletoe and it looked pretty funny.
Something tells me that by the end of this current TV season, we’ll see Big Bang and HIMYM are gonna be averaging close to 13 million. The growth of these shows is pretty unbeleivable in a season with so many declines, and with the exceptional quality they’re sure to continue growing.
Grady did say “now” about having no stunt-casting.
why won’t my comment post?
nevermind there it is now
HIMYM also has some stuntcasting coming up, haven’t they? With that Heidi person from The Hills.
Whatever, 30 Rock does it, Chuck does it, Two and a half Men does it. What’s the harm? It can be good fun.
I hate NBC for taking Chuck away for 6weeks. Just when the audience is growing. Love the Fulcrum joke, Robert!
“Glad to see so much of the Buy More last night. Chuck is a fun show to watch. Bet CBS is glad they stuck with HIMYM. That show always seemed to be on the bubble. These types of shows could really be money makers in syndication and DVD sales given enough time to catch on.”
Kathy, 20th Century Fox makes the show, so they get the $ from syndication and DVD.
This has always confused me. How does CBS make money from the show?
I know we’re over a year away from this, but if the numbers keep up, CBS BETTER give HIMYM / BBT the post-Super Bowl slot. What I predict will happen, though, is that CBS will give it to The Mentalist, which won’t really benefit from the overabundance of young viewers the Super Bowl gets (a la Criminal Minds). I think if HIMYM / BBT finally gets the exposure it deserves, we could see even higher demos for both shows (think 6.0ish).
Chuck rulezzz! Also an episode is a very well. T&HM are monsters in viewers. Sitcom from CBS are rock!
Not only did BBT and HIMYM hit season-highs, but I’m almost certain they were series-highs as well. BBT was for sure, and unless HIMYM hit 11+ in the 1st season, they got theirs last night too.
Both were incredibly funny last night. BBT is certainly close to becoming my favorite comedy on TV – it’s right on par with the Office in terms of how much I enjoy it.
Glad to see Chuck rally so well… hopefully NBC picks up the signs that this show is almost equal to Heroes with out any promotion and actually does something with it in terms of promotion. They’re going to have a large Super Bowl audience and a 3-D episode… there’s no reason that Chuck can’t hit 10+ on its Monday after Super Bowl episode if given proper promotion.
Very happy for Chuck. It was a great episode to. Too bad these numbers probably won’t stay when it comes back in February and up against HOUSE.
Heroes is staying leveled, thats good. Demos are doing ok as well. Hopefully more viewers will join in for the next volume as it is a fresh start.
agbaby, you’re correct. From CBS:
ALL FOUR CBS COMEDIES POST SERIES AND/OR SEASON HIGH RATINGS
“The Big Bang Theory” Scores Series Best in Viewers and All Key Demos
“How I Met Your Mother” Notches Series High in Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34; Largest Audience in Nearly Three Years
“Two and a Half Men” Delivers Its Largest Audience Since Moving to 9:00 PM in 2005
“Worst Week” Has Series High in Viewers
CBS Dominates the Night with Its Largest Monday Audience Since February 2007
Am I the only one that’s skeptical about the 3D Chuck episode? I guess I can’t think of another example to compare it to, but won’t casual TV watchers and such be turned off by having to get 3D glasses? I suppose you could watch without and all, but will people? I think the only good thing it has going is curiosity. Hopefully it’ll be a great episode and people will stick around.
Last NIght’s Heroes was amazing. I hope it picks up in the next volume…I can dream can’t I?
Good to see Chuck up, it’s my favorite show of all.
I know My own worst enemy isn’t really worth mentioning since it’s been cancelled already, but is that the final episode?
Is no one going to say something about My Own Worst Enemy?
If I am not mistaken, last night was the (reluctant) series finale, and I am personally furious at NBC. It’s fine to cancel an underperforming show, but why halt production right after a cliffhanger like the one we saw last night? At least, for the sake of its modest viewership, let them finish a storyline and provide us with some sense of closure. Last night’s ep makes me feel like I completely wasted my time on a show that never went anywhere.
Wo hoo Go Chuck. Season 2 and last nights episode has been great. There is no way Chuck should get cancelled because how I am supposed to get my Yvonne Strahotski fix.
Well Charlie from Lost is on this episode so hopefully we bring in the lost Fans. Also NBC is going to be handing out 150 million 3D glasses because some of the superbowl will be in 3D. Then they are going to promote the heck out of Chuck during the superbowl.
Joe Cool you are correct PB has lost it’s cool it’s very awful.I think the small viewers that are still watching just want to see how it ends already. But they should have ended it in season 2..Season 3 was bad 4 is beyond horrible. Now they have even eliminated the pretty good characters and have left the weakest link the lame one that Sara that’s why it’s unwatchable. It doesn’t even feel like the same cool show anymore it was one’s.It feels more like a badly scripted soap opera than anything else.

If I were to guess, I’d say CBS will wait until October next year to see what happens. But if The Office does well after the Super Bowl (and Jack Black is rumored to be part of that), that would bode well for The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother. The question CBS will have is: is there enough of a crossover audience between those shows and the Super Bowl?

Yay for Chuck!!! More people need to watch this show! It is just so damn clever and has everything packed into it. Comedy, drama and action…what more can you ask for?
Chuck is a absolute BLAST!! Last night episode was “Awesome.” Love all the Die-Hard throwbacks. Chuck is just plain FUN – has everything: action, comedy, drama, heart, best TV couple, smoking-hot actress, homage to everything cool in the 80s……
3D episode of Chuck needs to draw in 10+ million viewers
An so endeth TSCC on Mondays.
Coming soon to a town near you: “can it/will it on Fridays?” – it being “Do anything to get it off death-row”.
Tune in next spring! I’ll be rooting for Sarah…
Was last night the season finale for both HIMYM and BBT?
If it was when will new episodes come out? March?
Big Daddy, The Futon Critic has both of them coming back on 1/12. Of course, that is subject to change.
Patrick Murphy: “If I were to guess, I’d say CBS will wait until October next year to see what happens. Is there enough crossover audience between any shows and the Super Bowl? Kind of a dumb question if you ask me. Since the Superbowl can be expected to draw 5 times the viewers as the current #1 weekly series, you could put just about any program on TV and easily pick up 25 to 30 million viewers.
As far as which shows would do best, I think an episode of HIMYM would be a very smart move for CBS. They could really make use of their flashback storytelling and make one hell of Super Bowl themed episode.
So happy for Chuck. So pissed off that it’s going on mini-hiatus after putting up those numbers. Also pissed because it ended on a pseudo-cliffhanger. And I hate cliffhangers! lol.
“The comedies on CBS are fantastic! Going into this season, I hadn’t regularly watched a sitcom since “Friends” left the air more than four years ago. Then this summer some friends kept recommending that I watch HIMYM so I did.”
Just more evidence that HIMYM is the 21st Century ‘Friends.’
Well, I’m happy for Chuck. Even though I don’t watch the show, I’m happy for its fans. And can we please put the stupid “TSCC is dragging down PB” thing to rest? Honestly, it’s immature and doesn’t make sense. :/
As for TSCC, I really enjoyed the fall finale last night, but honestly it isn’t surprising that the numbers are the same from last week. The preview for the finale was really lackluster in my opinion. I mean, if I weren’t a fan of the show I wouldn’t have wanted to tune into the ep just based from the preview. It didn’t really have anything exciting. But like I said, the ep itself I enjoyed very much. Though it wasn’t spectacular like the season opener was IMO. But thank God that that whole Jesse/Riley scene was not the same as the preview made it look. I actually really feel bad for Riley now. I’ve never really been much of a fan of her before, and recently I’ve begun to really dislike her, but dang, Jesse is a grade A JERK. -_-
But here’s something I don’t get. Where did those 18 million who watched DWTS go? It seems they like, dropped off the face of the earth… or at least the TV world. All of these numbers for the shows (bar Chuck) seem basically the same as when DWTS was on the air. Another million added to Chuck, and then the current ABC show got 7 mil viewers, so where does that leave the other 10 million viewers that used to tune in to TV Mondays at 8? Did they switch to cable or just stop watching TV at that time all together? Maybe I’m missing something here, but it just doesn’t add up (no pun intended…).
Rachel, that’s a good question. Besides what you mentioned, certainly some of them went to CBS.
Most of the rest of the difference went to cable, although in a very cursory analysis (last night vs. a Monday night in early November), for the night, total viewing was down by 2%, so some of them just weren’t watching TV.
HIMYM and BBT are amazing! The character that plays Sheldon should win an emmy. CBS just needs to get rid of Worst Week, Christine, Gary Unmarried, and Rules of Engagement. They need to find 1 more good new comedy at 9:30 on Monday to have a perfect comedy block.
Oh, I see Robert. Thank you for explaining.
Man, c’mon 2% people!
(on another note, I just got the Serenity Collector’s Edition DVD as a belated b-day present… mwahahaha. Yeah, thought I’d randomly mention that here.)
BTW, what is Fox showing next Monday at 8?
Go CHUCK! Woo Hoo we can do it!
I can’t wait till Feb 2nd’s 3D episode!
Chuck Chuck Chuck Chuck rulez!!! last episode was…….outstanding (Cpt.Awesome)
Bill or Robert..if Chuck stays up in the 7s as it is will a 3rd season be likely? I know its looking good in the Index but i just wanted a you know..humans opinion ahah
YES!!! Chuck was great last night!!! It has become my “happy show”. I’m glad it seems to finally be getting some well deserved respect.
So I have a question…is Two and a Half Men really THAT good of a show? I remember watching it a few times early on and thought it was just ok; I saw nothing great or particularly hilarious, just your run of the mill comedy, JMO.
I have never seen HIMYM or BBT, so I can’t give my opinion either way, but the same question applies….are these really THAT good that they are such a ratings draw? Or is it on Monday nights people like to watch something less thought provoking after returning to the work week?
Just curious.
Fox 8 Cleveland ran football instead of TSCC last night, that’s the second time they’ve done that. The episode is airing tonight at 7 PM, but it can’t help the ratings.
I’m wondering if this occurs elsewhere.
Go Chuck!! Awesome jump in the ratings to go with an awesome episode!
If you ask me Monday nights is easily the best night of television. Chuck, Heroes, HIMYM, Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, CSI Miami, One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, Prison Break and TSCC. Granted Prison Break and Terminator are no longer around for mondays but they are replaced by even higher quality shows in 24 and House.
Monday nights there is something for everyone to watch and for some of us too much for 2 dvrs to even keep up with.
Chuck NEEDED to improve its ratings especially with the Leno deal and it has done so as the season progressed. NBC would be foolish to not renew it for a S3 to keep paired with Heroes. Heck, anyone else think that this would be a good idea next season(if Kath and Kim isn’t renewed and My Name is Earl ends as well)
Thursday night
8/7c – Chuck
9/8c – The Office
9:30/8:30c – 30 Rock
In fact I could probably do NBC’s entire Fall ‘09 Schedule for them right now.
Monday
8/7c – Medium
9/8c – Heroes
Tuesday
8/7c – New DRAMA
9/8c – Law & Order SVU
Wednesday
8/7c – Deal or No Deal
9/8c – Law & Order
Thursday
8/7c – Chuck
9/8c – The Office
9:30/8:30c – 30 Rock
Friday
8/7c – Biggest Loser
9/8c – Life (S3 is not gonna happen but I can dream right?)
Roman, it occurs too frequently for us to keep track of, and for a variety of reasons. During football season, every Monday night, the game that airs on ESPN also airs on a station in both of the local markets of the teams playing. Same for Thursday nights with the NFL Network games. There are other things (major local news story, for example) that can preempt the national airings.
But to be clear, the way the measurement works, the viewing on Fox that was for the NFL game actually *is* counted in the numbers above and will be stripped out in the final numbers. And no, it certainly won’t help TSCC’s ratings.
How are u supposed to watch Chuck in 3D?
I love the idea of Chuck on Thursdays at 7.
NBC needs to find the next big hit reality show. I don’t think “Howie Do It” is going to do it.
Also for those wondering about How I Met Your Mother…the answer is Yes. It is that entertaining. Barney Stinson is probably the most entertaining character on TV right now. As someone who has had The Office as their favorite show since 2005, I am getting very close to dethroning The Office with HIMYM. In fact, if The Office hadn’t gone on its recent string of excellent episodes, that change may have already taken place.
Monday
8/7c – Medium
9/8c – Heroes
Tuesday
8/7c – New DRAMA
9/8c – Law & Order SVU
Wednesday
8/7c – Deal or No Deal
9/8c – Law & Order
Thursday
8/7c – Chuck
9/8c – The Office

Don: Got a lot of Chuck fans…however I would move Heroes to Thursdays…Sorry. Still has the 18-49 more/less but lets see how Chuck does. I know the TVByTheNumbers people would rather vote off Heroes than Chuck and I understand that. I admit I am a Heroes fan but I do deal with ratings reality believe me I REALLY DO!!!!
Wow, look at that How I Met Your Mother’s 18-34 demo! I usually dont like paying attention to it since I find it an overrated indication of success(which is why I find the CW so annoying even though I am in the bracket). Is HIMYM CBS’ number 1 in that demo though? Excluding CSI of course…
So is TSCC’s rating gonna be even lower now Robert? Yikes.
I love Chuck but those demo ratings are not as high as I’d like. Still, compared against Fox’s Monday programs, Chuck looks pretty good. I wonder how its ratings are among Men 18-34 which is considered a particularly lucrative demo.
Someone said: “I hate NBC for taking Chuck away for 6weeks. Just when the audience is growing.”
Um, I *seriously* doubt the cast and crew can churn out any more episodes in time for January anyway. I’m speculating, but I imagine they had to rush to get last night’s episode ready in time for broadcast, and now they probably need a holiday break to avoid being hospitalized from exhaustion. We just got 11 episodes all in a row — just a few years ago, that was virtually unprecedented for a non-soap! Babylon 5 and DS9 fans would’ve killed for 11 in a row!
The show has to go on a hiatus SOMETIME. People always complain about show schedules, but would you rather wait until January so you can get the whole season all in a row, like with Lost and 24? I wouldn’t.
So basically, are the crazy Chuck fans replacing the crazy Moonlight fans by flooding every comments section about their show?
Last season, Chuck was able to crank out 13 episodes by Dec 7 (production stop due to the writer’s strike). It takes about two weeks to film an episode so they are probably trying finish episode 14 before the holiday break.
The only thing I worry about is what will happen to BBT and HIMYM when House moves to 8 on monday
I think Chuck is filming 2.15. I read somewhere that one of the extras has a blog and she was filming Chuck vs the Beefcake a few weeks ago.
So happy ABC is falling down. I hope they fall down to death.
You know, I’m surprisingly not too worried about House making that much of a dent in BBT/HIMYM’s ratings. If anything, House would probably be the one to get hurt, because its down considerably from last season, yes? And it seems to not be as strong creatively this year aswell…I dunno, those sound like big pluses for the comedic duo…
House will certainly be more competition than TSCC, but I don’t think CBS should be too worried. BBT/HIMYM may not continue to hit series highs, but I doubt they’ll drop significantly either.
Question in regards to digital distribution. Because I don’t have pay TV and often many shows I like are on the same time (such as 4 shows I like appearing on Monday night alone) I often times purchase the episodes on my XBox 360 ($2 an episode in 480p) or view Heroes episodes via Netflix instead of watching them live (I’m almost at the end of season 2.) This also gives me the chance to watch when I want as I don’t have a DVR.
Are these numbers (I’m sure the studios can get them from Micrsoft or Netflix) taken into account when deciding which shows stay and which go? Just curious as Monday’s episode of Chuck was the first I watched live (via HD antenna) in awhile. I have TTSCC and HIMYM waiting on my XBox to watch later in the week.
Thanks in advance.
Jason, the short answer is probably not much, if at all. Aside from DVD sales so far it doesn’t wind up being much money for the studios. Typically though, shows with low or marginal ratings don’t rack up high DVD sales.
The iTunes, Xbox, Netflix, and Internet streaming so far isn’t something the networks/studios have figured out how to make money off of and the gravy train is still television. And there’s more complexity than that since there are many cases where the studio producing the show isn’t the particular network’s own studio. There are cases where NBC Universal shows are on Fox, ABC produced shows are on CBS, etc.
I didn’t expect downloads to be huge right now, but across all platforms (iTunes/Amazon/Xbox) it seems like even Heroes is well under 100,000 paid downloads per episode (on a weekly basis).
If/when millions start watching particular shows that way regularly, and/or the networks can figure out how to make money on Internet streaming all of that will be taken into account. For now it seems like ratings are the primary driver, with syndication and DVD potential as secondary considerations. The other stuff most likely isn’t a factor at all currently in renewal decisions.
Answering DD: Two and a Half Men is above average for a typical laugh track sitcom. I used to rip on it because I was jealous of it’s ratings. Being a fan of Arrested Development and The Office (when the ratings were low), I really didn’t give it much of a chance. It has grown on me and it’s definitely worth watching. BBT and HIMYM are much better though. BBT has a character named Sheldon, and the writers give him such smart dialogue that he delivers at a rapid fire pace flawlessly. He makes the show great and unlike any other show. HIMYM is not a typical laugh track comedy at all. Their use of flashbacks is amazingly clever. Nothing about the show and the funny things that happen is predictable in any way. The comparison to Friends doesn’t make sense to me as far the content is concerned. Hopefully it will someday acheive Friend’s ratings though (probably not, but you never know)

ABC always takes a nosedive once “Dancing with the Has-Been’s” concludes. I’m sure they expected their ratings to do this, but they’ll be right back up there again once it returns in the spring. ABC better hope that “Lost” can anchor their Wednesday nights. If it does (which I think it will), they will be very strong Sundays through Thursdays once the has-beens return in February.
My guess is that “Lost” will average about 13 million this season. Anyone disagree?
I love CBS Mondays! Every show they have has something different to offer. I can’t believe some people are stunned that no other network can match this day. I mean these shows have fan bases, and attract new viewers every week, few shows achieve that.
Looking at CBS comedies on Mondays, instead of swapping Christine or Rules Of Engagement with Worst Week maybe they should put HIMYM there instead? It looks like it’s ready to become really huge.
I think CBS isn’t going to touch their line up with a ten foot pole. Christine was in the 930 monday block before and bombed. CBS has a good thing with the four comedy’s. They are all topping 10 million viewers.
So a word about Heroes…
I think that all the casual viewers are gone and we’re left with only the true fans. I think the numbers aren’t going to go down (at least much more) but I think it will be hard to get them up again. I hope the numbers go up in the spring, but I doubt it will happen.
Goooo Chuck!!!!!!!!!!
CHUCK!
Such a fabulous show. I’m rooting for it. I will lose sleep over the ratings. Go Chuck and Sarah!!
Please don’t cancel this original, comical, action-packed, witty, romantic show.
