Updated: Where are Monday’s Overnight ratings? Delayed!

Posted on 06 January 2009 by Robert Seidman

Update: two minutes after posting this I did see a message in my inbox! But unfortunately it wasn’t the ratings. It appears that the weekly broadcast network numbers will be delayed until tomorrow — and it could be that the overnight numbers for Monday are delayed until then too due to Nielsen processing issues

original post follows:

Still delayed. I typically don’t post delay messages because as soon as I have, the data appears. But it’s so delayed now that I’m hopeful that the posting of delays message jinx spurs the data to show up in my inbox soon.

There are also some delays with the weekly broadcast data as well — hopefully we’ll see that data later today. In the meanwhile you can check out the week’s top cable shows and top cable networks if you’re interested, or ponder the question: What would have happen if the NBC Universal produced House had wound up being picked up by the NBC broadcast network instead of Fox? Or, you can contemplate your navel, or you can watch Bill’s new favorite commercial:

It’s an interesting question. It certainly wouldn’t have had the Idol bump that sent House from moderately successful to mega hit. I can barely even remember what the climate was like at NBC in 2004, so trying to guess what sort of numbers House would have needed to stay on the air is beyond me. But I’m thinking it would be more of a success the way The Office is a success. Looks great on NBC, and gets nice demos, but no huge numbers.

I love this commercial…Being a Giants fan (and no I didnt just become a Giants fan when they won…Family has season tix) The fat guy on the treadmill is the best one…I think it represents the typical Giants fan you see at games…Plus I know the heartbreak of having a bad fantasy season as I did this year…and Yes I am a girl who does fantasy football…I know I rock right? Well keep up the good work you guys…

I found a small snippet of ratings info.. it’s not much and not sure how accurate it is.

    Ratings Breakdown:
Fox dominated on this first Monday of 2009, with Ohio State versus Texas on the annual Fiesta Bowl at an approximate (and above average) 11.5 rating/18 share in the overnights for the prime-time portion from 8:30-11 p.m. For comparative purposes, take a look at how The Fiesta Bowl performed over the prior two years:

    The Fiesta Bowl (Fox)
Wednesday 1/02/08: 8.3/13 (West Virginia vs. Oklahoma)
Monday, Jan. 1, 2007 (Boise vs. Oklahoma): 8.9/15

It was a good game. Glad it wasn’t a blow out (even tho I’m a Longhorn fan)- makes for better viewing!

  4. by the time House premiered on Fox in 11/04, Friends was already in NBC’s rear-view mirror, I think 50+ million watched the Friends finale in May ‘04. When Zucker thinks about it, he hears Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days” playing in his head. I doubt Bruce will sing it in Zucker’s honor when he heads-up the Super Bowl halftime show on NBC, but it’s fun to think about.

    jennf: yes, you do rock.

drew, those were early metered market numbers, which are always subject to a lot of change, but I have no doubt the Fiesta Bowl took the evening. Anyone interested can see the full early metered market report via Berman.

  5. CT says:

Every time I see that ad I think to myself “House of Cards obviously has no idea what that phrase means.”

  6. Julia says:

I don’t think it’s fair to compare the Fiesta Bowl this year to the past two years. This year it was the BCS championship game and aired several days later than the past couple of years. I like to see last year’s championship game’s numbers. (Was it the Orange Bowl last year?)

  7. Vader says:

Not just Friends Robert, Frasier pulled in 25.2 million for its finale in May 2004. Oh how the mighty have fallen…

  8. Vader says:

I think I’ll add onto your joke and say that NBC better be hoping they don’t become a Spirit in the Night as well. ;)

  9. Vader, indeed. And I’d be OK with Spirits in the Night making the halftime cut, but I think we’re far more likely to get Born to Run and Born in the USA.

Julia, I agree the comparisons are not fair (I’d written something up on this last night but never got around to posting it), but this year the Fiesta Bowl was not the national championship game — that’s on Thursday and I don’t believe it’s any “bowl” game, but just the BCS Championship game. Last year, the BCS Championship game did air on the Monday after New Years, but I don’t think it was a bowl game then either — though the Championship game did used to switch around from the major bowl games.

It’s also unfair to compare because of the matchups. If Notre Dame ever regains its ability to play championship football it would jack up the ratings significantly (people either love them, or love to hate them, that’s always good for ratings.)

  10. Jeff G says:

The Fiesta Bowl is not this years BCS championship game. It will air Thursday in Miami.

  11. Julia says:

I thought that the championships are now revolving between the four big bowls, Fiesta, Orange, Rose and the other one. (Sugar?) And they would take place sometime after New Years. I don’t follow college anything too closely, since it’s been far too long since Michigan has been any good in any sport, and the blog I usually read to keep up at all shut down before the season started. (Also, Michigan would probably trump Notre Dame ratings, though if they could both be in a championship game would be best.)

  12. Julia, the championship game definitely did rotate among bowls for a while, I’m not up on it enough myself to give a definitive answer.

I know Notre Dame received a huge national contract of its own from NBC for the exlusive rights to its home college games. NBC recently renewed the contract to extend it through 2015. Michigan doesn’t have a contract like that, but Notre Dame is a bit of a renegade when it comes to college football — it doesn’t belong to any conference so it can negotiate its own deals, which Michigan can’t.

  13. drew says:

Julia- That changed in 07 (I think that’s when it changed since UT won the natl championship at the rose bowl in 06).

  14. R.G. says:

I love that commercial – I saw it once so far…

In regards to “fantasy world” of HOUSE on NBC???- well it would have to be a dream…The people that make decisions there at NBC now I think used to work at the CW…LENO will be on 5 nights a week at 9pm central time next year on NBC…

    So I rest my case…

    HOW ABOUT ASKING POLITELY!

  17. Ben says:

Not to mention the 70 odd million people who watched the Seinfeld finale.

  18. THERE WEREN’T REALLY ANY NEW AIRINGS OF SHOWS THE WEEK OF 12/22-12/28 AND WE DON’T HAVE THE FREAKING DATA FOR 12/29-01/04 YET (PLEASE.READ.POST.ABOVE!).

All of that would be true even if he had asked politely or not used all caps.

  19. Joe Cool says:

Maybe the Jericho Nuts finally too action in the war against Nielsen and are holding the data hostage until Nielsen agrees to count EVERY VIEWER !!!

    http://trishkate.blogspot.com/2008/04/jericho-fandom-heading-for-disaster.html

  20. clutz says:

    @ Joe Cool,

The Jericho Nuts are well aware that Nielsen can sometimes fall victim to crippling “processing issues.” Or maybe CBS did not win the night on raw data, which just cannot be right, so Les Moonves made a couple of phone calls. Now Nielsen’s busy recounting with Al Franken methodology…

But seriously, there’s a whole lot to their system that Nielsen simply does not reveal. They use tired excuses like “it’s complicated, you won’t understand it, its statistics, yadda yadda yadda…” So when these issues happen, it’s natural to wonder what they are hiding! I was hoping TNS/DirecTView would be more open to the public with their ratings data. But they’re even more proprietary than Nielsen is!

  21. Jacob says:

Seriously? Are they still delayed? Seriously? That’s just bad.

  22. Ben says:

I liked Jericho, but c’mon, it’s over, it got a conclusive ending. I can see why they went ‘nuts’ when it ended on a cliffhanger though.

  23. Ricardo says:

If House was on NBC, at least this year, it would be exactly like Like.

  24. Julia says:

Ricardo, you’re looking at it from the wrong perspective. If House had started this season or last, you’d likely be correct. But if it had premiere in Fall 2004 on NBC it would be another story. After all, NBC was able to launch Heroes with pretty big numbers in 2006, so two years prior to that they could have done just as well. And House (while I lost interest) has not had to deal with bleeding its audience the way Heroes has.

  25. Name Required says:

A day without ratings numbers is like a day without sunshine!

  26. Name Required says:

Most serial dramas are hurting these days. It will be interesting to see how “24″ and LOST do when they return. Will they have HEROES like losses? Im guessing no. But it all depends on how good the episodes are. I think both will manage at least 10 million viewers. In any case, even if they go to HEROES like levels, their 18-49 demo should be enough to keep them going. LOST has a pre-planned ending in 2010 anyway.

  27. Norsu says:

    Nuts to Nielsen!

Recently caught red handed omitting CW from some of their top 10 lists.

In 2009 that 5-10,000 “top secret” boxes count 300 Million Americans is a total fraud when the technology is there to count EVERY Cable and Satellite viewer. TV Network viewership is off 25% past two years I read recently. I Bet it is more but Nielsen/Networks trying to keep a hold of the Billion $(s) TV Ad revenue streams……
