Nuts to Nielsen!

Recently caught red handed omitting CW from some of their top 10 lists.

In 2009 that 5-10,000 “top secret” boxes count 300 Million Americans is a total fraud when the technology is there to count EVERY Cable and Satellite viewer. TV Network viewership is off 25% past two years I read recently. I Bet it is more but Nielsen/Networks trying to keep a hold of the Billion $(s) TV Ad revenue streams……

Most serial dramas are hurting these days. It will be interesting to see how “24″ and LOST do when they return. Will they have HEROES like losses? Im guessing no. But it all depends on how good the episodes are. I think both will manage at least 10 million viewers. In any case, even if they go to HEROES like levels, their 18-49 demo should be enough to keep them going. LOST has a pre-planned ending in 2010 anyway.

Ricardo, you’re looking at it from the wrong perspective. If House had started this season or last, you’d likely be correct. But if it had premiere in Fall 2004 on NBC it would be another story. After all, NBC was able to launch Heroes with pretty big numbers in 2006, so two years prior to that they could have done just as well. And House (while I lost interest) has not had to deal with bleeding its audience the way Heroes has.

I liked Jericho, but c’mon, it’s over, it got a conclusive ending. I can see why they went ‘nuts’ when it ended on a cliffhanger though.

The Jericho Nuts are well aware that Nielsen can sometimes fall victim to crippling “processing issues.” Or maybe CBS did not win the night on raw data, which just cannot be right, so Les Moonves made a couple of phone calls. Now Nielsen’s busy recounting with Al Franken methodology…

But seriously, there’s a whole lot to their system that Nielsen simply does not reveal. They use tired excuses like “it’s complicated, you won’t understand it, its statistics, yadda yadda yadda…” So when these issues happen, it’s natural to wonder what they are hiding! I was hoping TNS/DirecTView would be more open to the public with their ratings data. But they’re even more proprietary than Nielsen is!

I love that commercial – I saw it once so far…

In regards to “fantasy world” of HOUSE on NBC???- well it would have to be a dream…The people that make decisions there at NBC now I think used to work at the CW…LENO will be on 5 nights a week at 9pm central time next year on NBC…

So I rest my case…

Julia- That changed in 07 (I think that’s when it changed since UT won the natl championship at the rose bowl in 06).

Julia, the championship game definitely did rotate among bowls for a while, I’m not up on it enough myself to give a definitive answer.

I know Notre Dame received a huge national contract of its own from NBC for the exlusive rights to its home college games. NBC recently renewed the contract to extend it through 2015. Michigan doesn’t have a contract like that, but Notre Dame is a bit of a renegade when it comes to college football — it doesn’t belong to any conference so it can negotiate its own deals, which Michigan can’t.

I thought that the championships are now revolving between the four big bowls, Fiesta, Orange, Rose and the other one. (Sugar?) And they would take place sometime after New Years. I don’t follow college anything too closely, since it’s been far too long since Michigan has been any good in any sport, and the blog I usually read to keep up at all shut down before the season started. (Also, Michigan would probably trump Notre Dame ratings, though if they could both be in a championship game would be best.)

The Fiesta Bowl is not this years BCS championship game. It will air Thursday in Miami.

Vader, indeed. And I’d be OK with Spirits in the Night making the halftime cut, but I think we’re far more likely to get Born to Run and Born in the USA.

Julia, I agree the comparisons are not fair (I’d written something up on this last night but never got around to posting it), but this year the Fiesta Bowl was not the national championship game — that’s on Thursday and I don’t believe it’s any “bowl” game, but just the BCS Championship game. Last year, the BCS Championship game did air on the Monday after New Years, but I don’t think it was a bowl game then either — though the Championship game did used to switch around from the major bowl games.

It’s also unfair to compare because of the matchups. If Notre Dame ever regains its ability to play championship football it would jack up the ratings significantly (people either love them, or love to hate them, that’s always good for ratings.)

I don’t think it’s fair to compare the Fiesta Bowl this year to the past two years. This year it was the BCS championship game and aired several days later than the past couple of years. I like to see last year’s championship game’s numbers. (Was it the Orange Bowl last year?)

by the time House premiered on Fox in 11/04, Friends was already in NBC’s rear-view mirror, I think 50+ million watched the Friends finale in May ‘04. When Zucker thinks about it, he hears Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days” playing in his head. I doubt Bruce will sing it in Zucker’s honor when he heads-up the Super Bowl halftime show on NBC, but it’s fun to think about.

drew, those were early metered market numbers, which are always subject to a lot of change, but I have no doubt the Fiesta Bowl took the evening. Anyone interested can see the full early metered market report via Berman.
