Monday Ratings: Fox wins with Fiesta, ABC wins with women

The Fiesta Bowl led Fox to ratings victory on the first Monday of 2009 averaging 15.797 million between 8pm-11pm according to preliminary numbers. Though I typically don’t care much about the bowl games outside of the BCS National Championship these days, last night’s game featuring a last minute comeback by the Texas Longhorns to down the Buckeyes of THE Ohio State University was quite exciting. I’m no Texas fan, but I might loathe the “THE” in Ohio State University more than anything in sports so I was delighted with the outcome.

Things are getting back to normal after the holidays, but we’re not quite there yet. CBS ran with repeats of its Monday comedy lineup and CSI: Miami and came in second place in viewers, but tied for last among 18-49 year olds and was last among 18-34 year olds.

Over on NBC the second night of Superstars of Dance held up pretty well. It averaged over 9 million viewers every half hour, but never reached a 3.0 rating among 18-49 year olds. Meanwhile a new cycle of The Bachelor debuted on ABC and while it averaged fewer viewers than Superstars of Dance, it had much more respectable demographic ratings, averaging over a 3.0 rating every half hour but the first. Meanwhile the battle between the new True Beauty on ABC and Momma’s Boys on NBC wasn’t close. Beauty cruised to victory with over 7.6 million viewers and 3.2/8 among 18-49 year olds, where Momma’s Boys had a mere 2.0/5. ABC won the night with women 18-49 and 18-34 every half hour of the night.

Meanwhile on The CW (remember them? I guess the “The” in The CW isn’t quite as annoying as THE Ohio State University, but…) there were new episodes of Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill. But I’m not sure its viewing audience was back in gear yet after the holidays, both shows averaged under 3 million viewers.

Gossip Girl’s woes seem to be the result of the return of The Secret Life of the American Teenager on ABC Family. It handily bested Gossip Girl Monday at 8pm (note, the numbers cited in the link are final numbers, whereas the numbers below were preliminary overnight numbers).

Probably not such a useful comparison, but there isn’t really any useful comparison so here’s last Monday’s overnight report.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Anonymous says:

Wow, the Bachelor did surprisingly well! I thought this franchise had run out of steam ages ago, but a 3+ in the demo is pretty good. And those Gossip Girl numbers are bad — what happened?

  2. Schmokey says:

Ouch, Bob. Dissing on The Ohio State University? Not bad enough that the Bucks took the gaspipe, but now you get bent over what was always just a fun little bit of fluff that The Ohio State University players starting saying decades ago?

It’s supposed to be ironic, Bob. As if anyone would confuse OSU with some other Ohio State University?

    Lighten up, Francis. :)

  3. Chris the TV sage says:

It is clearly not meant to be ironic. OSU is quite pleased with itself.

  4. Andrea says:

Superstars of Dance is doing decently but looks not to be a DWTS-like hit–Chuck fans can breathe easier.

  5. Bill Gorman says:

This year’s post bowl mantra at OSU, “Sure, we lost again, but not by nearly as much as usual!”

  6. Andrew says:

I happen to be a fan of THE Ohio State University. :)

  7. Mel S. says:

RE: Gossip Girl ratings…I believe it went head-to-head with the return of Secret Life of the American Teenager. The latter show pulls in much of the same young female audience. Does anyone have ratings info for Teenager?

  8. Bill Gorman says:

Mel, we don’t get cable ratings on an overnight basis, but we should have them next week.

  9. Ben says:

Ouch! Gossip Girl ratings hurt! Last Monday episode was so GREAT!
I think season 2 is being much better than the 1st one. agree?
    xx

  10. Mel, great point about Secret Diary, I forgot about it coming back and I’d bet it beat Gossip Girl. Though we don’t get cable ratings on an overnight basis, we’ll likely see the Secret Diary press release as early as today unless it did *worse* than Gossip Girl, then we might not see it until next Tuesday. But if it did better, the only reason we haven’t seen a “Secret Diary Kicked Gossip Girl’s butt!” press release is because of the data processing issues yesterday.

  11. GRD says:

If “Secret Life” stomped “Gossip Girl,” that would be hilarious.

  12. Lisa says:

Between Secret Life and Gossip Girl, I’d pick Gossip Girl without question. It’s fun! Last night was a very good episode. But wasn’t Secret Life beating 90210 on Tuesdays? It probably did beat GG too. OTOH, I don’t see Secret Life as having a lot of staying power. One or two years down the road, the audience might disappear.

BTW, can anyone explain why TV Guide dropped the CW from the grid in its print editions? They still list networks that must have a fraction of the CW’s viewership, so it’s really annoying. I emailed TVG asking why the removal and got no reply; I phoned and got no straight answer; I sent a letter and expect no answer to that.

  13. Lisa says:

*Monda night*, not *last* night. The delay in the numbers threw me off.

  14. Julia says:

Lisa, I believe the magazine and the website recently split (I think that’s what it is, I know Matt Roush recently stopped writing for one of them and that was the explanation I was given), which means the magazine could be under new ownership (rather than the website) and they decided to change things for whatever reason.

  15. The magazine is separate from both tvguide.com and the TV Guide channel. Since I have no idea, about the magazine listings I’m checking with the CW to see if they have info.

  16. Name Required says:

Robert, its apparently all part of the sinister plot to finish off JERICHO and cut its ratings. At least thats what they are saying on the Universal HD message boards.

  17. Bill Gorman says:

Name, while I never read those fansite boards, if you posted a comment and said that you’d read on them that “the Jericho fan boards are now aflame about the fact that the cancellation of their show lead to the worldwide financial crises” I’d believe you.

  18. As predicted, there was no waiting around for the Secret Life data since it easily bested Gossip Girl. CW will likely take THE Ohio State University approach and claim that it only lost among women 18-34 by 10%.

  19. chris says:

whats with the half hour ratings? it was so much easier to see ratings for each show before.

  20. AprilFox says:

I watched The Bachelor and really enjoyed it.

  21. Matt2 says:

With the exception of Momma’s Boys, it appears that all the other programs held up well opposite the Fiesta Bowl. Those Bachelor demographic numbers are a stunner- actually increasing in viewers and demographic numbers each half hour. Even more amazing was the ability of True Beauty to deliver more solid numbers for ABC from 10pm to 11pm. I hope Samantha Who can keep pace with the new shows or she may wind up getting walking papers after this season and that would be a shame for such a good sitcom.

  22. Frank Reino says:

Please keep the 1/2 hour ratings I love seeing the trends! 9:30 is the best slot on network t.v Im from Ohio by the way

  23. NBC has been kicking ABC’s butt with the number of viewers

    I hate it
