Sunday Ratings: Globes Less Golden; 24 Opens Lower; Steelers Win At Home For CBS

Posted on 12 January 2009 by Bill Gorman

Scoreboard CBS NBC ABC FOX Uni CW
Total Viewers (million) 17.023 12.875 10.334 9.637 2.777 1.173
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 4.9/12 4.1/10 3.5/9 3.4/8 1.1/3 0.4/1
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 3.5/9 3.5/9 3.1/8 2.9/9 1.2/3 0.5/1

While down 26% from it’s 2007 numbers, the 66th Golden Globes on NBC was #1 for viewers from 8:30-11pm Sunday night (and, coincidentally, NBC’s 30 Rock was the only broadcast TV show to win an award, it took 3), but the Steelers/Chargers NFL Divisonal Game overrun was enough to give the viewership and the adults 18-49 win to CBS. CBS and NBC tied in the 18-34 demo for the night.

The NFL Divisonal Game in which the Steelers became the only home team to win all weekend was the dominant show early and the vagaries of the fast affiliate ratings boosted the first half hour of 60 Minutes as well.

The season premiere of Fox’s 24, gone since early 2007, was down ~30% from the 2007 season premiere. It was competitive in the adults 18-49 and 18-34 demos, but but its best showing was 2nd place from 8-8:30. It will be interesting to see its numbers on Monday night vs. its regular competition.

While winning both demos for its hour, with the Globes likely draining female viewers, Desperate Housewives was down 12% from its seasonal average matching its lowest rating ever for an original episode.

Note that because of the NFL game these fast affiliate ratings, particularly CBS’s, are likely to be significantly adjusted in the final results, see explanation below, so its hard to comment intelligently on the CBS show numbers until the finals are available.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Amb@ss@dor! says:

IMHO, good for Bauer, pretty enough for Golden Globe and fine for CBS Cold case & the unit.

  2. Ant says:

Thats actually pretty good for 24 with the competition it had. Managed to retain most of its audience.

  3. Outlander says:

It will be more interesting, to me, to see how 24 does tonight.

  4. Cylon says:

Good numbers for 24 with no football lead in. And considering the 18 month layoff and with critics and fans bashing so much of season 6 it barely drew 10 million viewers for its finale but still managed to average 13 million viewers for the season. Hopefully they can keep up the numbers tonight and throughout the season.

  5. Name Required says:

Could things get any worse for poor JERICHO? Ouch. Those under 1 million number stick out like a sore thumb. And for CARRIE (an 30 year old movie) to GAIN viewers basically more than doubling JERICHO’s numbers as it went along only adds insult to injury. Why is CW airing Carrie now anyway? Its more of a Halloween type movie. Besides Ive seen that move at least a dozen times. Why doesnt CW air reruns of CSI or NCIS on Sunday nights? Id bet the ratings would be wayyyyyyyy higher than that this.

On to “24″ – it was pretty good except they are basically stealing the plot of DIE HARD 4 and parts of DIE HARD 2 (part with the planes nearly crashing – of course in DH2, the plane did crash). Not very original but the sheer magnificance of Jack Bauer makes it all worth watching. I say Jack Bauer should go back in time to 1865 and stop the Lincoln assassination and when he returns to
the present he finds the Nazi’s running the planet after winning WW II at which point he has to go after Hitler son who is running America. Now THAT would be original.

As for the Globes – who cares, just a bunch of Hollywood types slapping each other on the back for making big $$$$. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz

  6. scott says:

I hope Desperate Housewives improves soon :( .
I’m guessing it done so bad last night was because of the Golden Globes?

  7. R.G. says:

The following (comment) takes place between 10am and 11am:

    Hmmm…actually I thought 24 would of cracked 15.0 forst night out…but in todays TV world…considerably not bad…

I will stick with 24 – not the explosive premiere as previous years but a much better set up of the season…

cant’ wait for tonight…cue the clock…Klinko, klinko, klinko…

  8. Ant says:

When will the DVR numbers for it be available? Be itneresting to see them

  9. R.G. says:

(doogh! -stupid spell check) …first night out…

  10. Noah says:

I can never understand how almost every CBS show has so many viewers but such weak demos…

  11. R.G. says:

Overall – i think CBS now has some of the best shows…so people turn off their TV on that channel and then when they turn it on…well you get the point…

  12. R.G. says:

I was waiting for 24 to come on so i watched the half hour of the GOLDEN GLOBES before Bauer (24) came on and what a bunch of goofs on the awards show—

    - now i know why they need scripts for movies…NONE of these people can complete a sentence on their own…!!!

  13. Bill Gorman says:

Ant, the DVR data for Sunday 1/11 should be available by 1/26 or 1/27.

Noah, to paraphrase M. Night Shyamalan, “I see old people”.

  14. R.G. says:

besides the playoffs – 24 is the first original TV show I’ve watched since the middle of December…

  15. Mike says:

Crap… DH numbers down again…must admit that episode was pretty boring…so hopefully thing will be up next week for the 100th episode. If not…thanks for killing the show with your 9 Seasons bull crap talk Marc Cherry… things were fine before u started that talk..so you will be the death of this show

  16. josh says:

like the other poster said, the CW should have a crime night on sundays, with repeasts on NCI/CSI’s!

  17. Catherine says:

Recorded “24″ so I will be recording tonight’s too. Wonder how many people are doing the same thing? With luck I’ll get to watch them both before next Monday since it is hard to find a two hour block right after work. That might be why the numbers are down and four hours in two days is a big commitment.

  18. Ant says:

Bill just want to get an experts opinion on this..how good is 24s numbers given the competition it had>?

  19. Rachel P says:

Question that may be obvious – is Name Required that Nick C guy?

  20. Kate says:

Rachel P, lol i think it is

  21. Schmokey says:

I have to think that 12 million viewers is not what Fox was hoping for with 24. This is a show that routinely sheds viewers as if they were so much dog hair during the course of a season. Given how silly/boring the first two hours were, that won’t change this season. In fact, given how different the television landscape is since 24 last aired, that viewer shedding will probably hit an all time high during this season.

My prediction: 8 million or less by season’s end. I wonder if that is enough for a renewal for a show with such a massive production budget?

My God, when Cherry Jones said, “I don’t have time to grieve,” all I could hear was Jesse Ventura saying, “I don’t have time to bleed,” in Predator.

Not sure that’s the image 24 producers wanted me flashing on while their Prez was going all emotional. Or maybe it was. Perhaps they are completely embracing the camp aspects of the show now. Wouldn’t be a bad idea. I just wish they had had Bauer’s dad give us one, “That’ll do, Jack. That’ll do,” before they blew him up last season.

Not that I was still watching by the time they blew him up. So maybe they did and I missed it.

By the way, TOURTURE HEARINGS????? 24 trying to inject realism????? REALISM????

Man, talk about eating your cake and then puking it up too.

Anyone notice that they told Jack that his questioning would resume in TWENTY-FOUR HOURS?

I will at least tune in to the season finale so I can see Jack show up back in the hearing room all beat up, bloody and half naked, just to hear him utter, “Next question, Senator,” before they fade to black for perhaps the final time ever.

By the way, I also noticed the bad Die Hard 2 and Die Hard 4 rip offs. If you are going to rip off Die Hard, Keifer, couldn’t you have at least ripped off one of the good Die Hards? I kept waiting for Senator Fred to show up and say, “Jack Bauer?? Someone get me John McClain!!”

  22. Shea says:

Next week things will be back to Normal for Desperate Housewives. Was up against Globes and 24 last night. It still matched last week’s rating. Should be up with no competition again and the 100th episode special

  23. Bill Gorman says:

I’d not draw any conclusions about 24’s future this season from Sunday night. The results tonight (Monday) are a bit of a different matter. While it’s not entirely a standard line up (it will be getting a lead in from House starting next week), it’s much more like the weekly competition that 24 will be seeing going forward. I’m sure fingers are crossed at Fox.

  24. idizzle says:

24 posted real solid numbers with special competition and if it can even only hold those for a couple months on slower Mondays with a House lead in, it will still be FOXs second best scripted show. In its 7th season. After being off the air for almost 2 years. And even if it eventually falls to about 8-9 million viewers, looks like it should be able to retain demo numbers on the level of Heroes and well above Fringe.

When looking for their problem shows neither 24 nor House are where FOX will be looking.

  25. Bill Gorman says:

No question that Desperate Housewives was hurt by the Golden Globes. It’s a female demo draw the likes of which DH doesn’t have to ordinarily match up against.

  26. dutchie says:

    House was robbed last night!
I’m wondering if DH will bounce back next week without the GG competition, or maybe it’s just slowly dying..?

  27. clutz says:

With playoff footbal in the mix – and a darn good game that ran the full 7-8 hour – “Jericho” has indeed succumbed to sub-1MM total viewers for a couple weeks in a row now.

I can’t be too sad about it yet. I must focus my energy on the home team. HERE WE GO STILLERS N’AT! :D

Oh, and “Name Required” – talk about SNOOZERS

  28. clutz says:

  29. j says:

I’m impressed by how well Desperate held up, though. It still defeated everything but football in 18-49.

Is there anywhere that shows the average 18-49 viewership for 24 in each season? Thanks!

  30. clutz says:

My apologies for the triplicate comments here. I hit the Enter key instead of the Shift key at some point, sorry! Anyway, my point on “24″ was that, IMHO, it has been nothing but ZZZZZZzzz since about the third season. To paraphrase Mike Myers (on SNL’s Sprockets): “Your plot has grown tiresome.”

  31. dave says:

next week desp wives go against the steelers afc champ game….i see remote fights.

  32. Joe says:

I enjoyed watching the Golden Globes I was happy to see Mickey Rourke take home the award for his movie “The Wrestler” which is a very good movie I hope he takes home the Oscar as well next month also while i’m not a big fan of 30 Rock I thought Tracy Morgan’s speech was very funny

  33. BIG DADDY says:

I still can’t believe people even care about award shows…. * yawn *

  34. JoJo says:

It’s still disappointing to see that CBS is most likely going to cancel The Unit, even though it has a larger total audience than Brothers and Sisters (ABC’s third most watched show). I’m hoping that CBS keeps it on the air because it’s pretty close to the magic 100 episode number.

  35. Bill Gorman says:

JoJo, The Unit may not be close enough to syndication to survive, it will have only 69 episodes through the end of this season. Although with the wacky news about Til Death, I am suspending disbelief for a while on what crazy things potential syndication profits can cause.

  36. R.G. says:

Yes – I too saw the Mickey Rourke receiving award thing too … and bonus points to the MORON that gave the finger on a network awards show…I’m sure NBC loved that…and was it me or did even this award show cut back on the back drop and stage…movie ticket sales are up in this bad economy…Are they trying to make us think they are hurting too…? I guess its hollywoods way of trying to relate.

  37. Name Required says:

Oh yeah, and GO STEELERS !!!

  38. jay says:

Most interesting ratings night of the year – maybe season – sofar. Watched five seconds of Globes – long enough to see Zuck’s smiling face and 30 Rock win again. ( Whatever. ) Never watch 24 but thought numbers OK. DH – intrigued by comment above about M. Cherry; may have to consult Google on that one. Until further notice I would think the Globes audience pull excuses the low DH numbers. Like the new format on the Nielsens. Finally, winter of network discontent getting warmer. Since I was visiting, watched WKRP, Newhart in syndication, just for full disclosure.

  39. cool says:

Marc Cherry said that DH will end in 2011 after seven seasons. My bet? ABC will end the show just like Marc Cherry said but wil get an spinoff with Edie.

  40. Kathy B. says:

I’m confused. Was 2007 the year they just announced the Golden Globes winners and didn’t have the big show? Does that mean that more people watched them reading the winners than actually receiving the award?

  41. Daniel says:

All the columns read 18-49. Please correct!

  42. Bill Gorman says:

Daniel, Damn that copy and paste! Fixed. ;)

  43. Bill Gorman says:

Kathy, 2008 was the “star-less” Globes. 2007 was the last “normal” show.

  44. Kathy B. says:

Thanks Bill, that makes more sense. It’s Monday, my brain isn’t quite functional yet.

  45. josh says:

    cool,

i read that ABC and Marc cherry are talking about extending the show to 9 seasons!

  46. johnthemon says:

    @ R. G.

Are you serious? CBS has the best shows? On what planet do they think that?

Almost everything on CBS is a retread of CSI, or an over-the-hill reality show (Surivor, Amazing Race). They have a few mediocre comedies…but otherwise they reall suck.

  47. Tony says:

Do people really think that Desperate Housewives was hurt by football? For some reason, I don’t think the average football fan tunes in to DH when football isn’t on.

  48. Bill Gorman says:

Tony, not me. Who are the “people” you’re referring to?

  49. JP says:

as much as i love 24, no surprise this show fell to that low. Reason: Writers Strike! Like most shows this season the writers strike just kill momenteum from last season. The difference, 24 is a brand and is consistant entity for FOX.

As far as the globes, some of the films that were nominated and won (SLumdog Millioniare for example), no one has seen. Also the event seem upbeat but in a low key sort of way.

As I said just the overrun of the NFL would do the job for CBS.

Desperate Housewives will return to its normal levels after the SUper Bowl.
I hope ABC isn t dumb to put Desperate Housewives up agaisnt Steelers-Ravens Next Sunday night. All the networks should run repeats,. CASE CLOSED. That game will do a 39 rating.

  50. thedemonhog says:

Poor “cool” user, missing the renegotiation that ‘Desperate Housewives’ will actually end in 2013.

  51. Lisa says:

I wouldn’t worry about DH. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon. It was the show I watched last night, too. I don’t care about the Golden Globes, and I passed on 24 because during previous seasons I invariably got tired of the show about halfway through its run. It’s a good show, sure, just not really my thing.

Also, about a week ago, I asked about TV Guide dropping the CW from its print grid listings. Tonight I found this article ( http://www.philly.com/inquirer/columnists/20090110_Dave_on_Demand___Mentalist__showed_powers_only_in_ratings.html ):

I noticed over the last few weeks in TV Guide that listings for the CW, home of Smallville, 90210 and other imperishable pleasures, are completely missing from the prime-time grid.

The network declined to comment. Scott Crystal, TV Guide’s CEO and president, framed it as a space issue.

“There are now hundreds of channels on television and we can only accommodate approximately 70 in our primetime grids,” he e-mailed. “In the past few weeks, the following networks have not appeared in the grids: MTV, CW, DIY and TV Guide Network.”

But the CW is the only broadcast outlet in that bunch. And it simply doesn’t make sense to drop it while continuing to run listings for far more marginal competitors like ION and MyNetworkTV.
    ———————————-

My response: Something does stink, and it’s the answer given by Scott Crystal. Many networks must get a fraction of the viewership of the CW, surely, yet they still are listed. What makes them so much more worthy than the CW? I’d like an answer to that question, though it’ll probably be another lame one.

  52. Jesse says:

I wasn’t aware anybody read TV Guide anymore. On-screen guides are the only way to go.

  53. cool says:

Something smells fi$$$hy too me with all the TV Guide/CW.

  54. Sam says:

All you people worried about the ‘low’ ratings ‘Desperate Housewives’ pulled in…you must be out of your minds to think ABC will ever reject an offer to extended the show until 2013. It’s still by far one of their highest rated shows. It pulled in 13.7 million viewers despite being against unusual competition like ‘The Golden Globes’ and ‘24′. As far as scripted shows go, ‘Desperate Housewives’ is their #1 show in both viewers, and even the 18-34 demo (it’s starting to outpace ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in that category).

  55. Julia says:

Through 2013 is four more seasons. Considering the way shows can easily go from hits to nothing in one season, ABC would be a fool to sign that deal. Two more seasons I could understand. Four I cannot.

  56. Lisa says:

Jesse-YOU might not know anyone who uses the print TVG listings (though you probably do and just don’t know it; it’s not the sort of thing most people would typically tend to know about friends/acquaintances), but of course some people like them. And yes, there are other ways to get schedules, but I prefer to have a paper copy of the schedule so I can mark what I want to watch/tape each night ahead of time. My local onscreen guide only tells what’s on for an hour in advance, making it impossible to plan ahead for even just the next night. Plus, it scrolls verrrrry slowly through about 100 channels. In short, it’s virtually useless. I also like to get TVG for the news and interviews.

Anyway, if the magazine is going to be published, whether or not YOU read it or care at all, and it’s going to include a schedule, it only makes sense that they include a listing each night for one of the most highly watched networks. It takes up just a sliver of space on each night’s grid.

  57. Joie says:

I actually feel really sorry for the CW. Forgive me if I sound like I’m repeating what 5 million other people out there may have already said, but if the CW had picked up shows that had an established audience (I won’t mention specific titles, out of fear that I might start a riot) instead of that MRC deal/ratings nightmare, they would’ve gotten some pretty decent (by their standards) numbers on Sundays.

Dawn Ostroff deserves an award for the worst network executive ever in American television history.

  58. coffee says:
