Updated Thursday Ratings: CSI’s Petersen Farewell Draws 23 Million

Posted on 16 January 2009 by Bill Gorman

Total Viewers (million) 17.436 9.102 7.011 4.367 4.205 3.616
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 4.6/11 3.5/9 3.0/7 1.7/4 1.8/4 1.5/4

William Petersen’s farewell episode on CSI was the big draw on Thursday night, boosting CBS to nightly wins for viewership and adults 18-49, but even with all those viewers, it could only finish third for adults 18-34. ABC assisted by the duo of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice drew in the youth, winning the race for adults 18-34 for the night and finishing second for adults 18-49.

On a farewell Thursday (President Bush, William Petersen), CSI’s 23.1 million viewers at 9pm towered over the competition. Grey’s Anatomy and The Office were still reasonably close for adults 18-49, and both finished better for adults 18-34 with Grey’s just edging out The Office for the win. At 9:30, 30 Rock recovered from its bruising last week vs. the BCS Championship, back to decent, if not Fey/Palin-esque demo numbers. And once again, Kitchen Nightmares demonstrated that it is no longer a show that should be on broadcast prime-time on Thursdays.

Eleventh Hour, like CSI, dominated the viewership race at 10pm as well as adults 18-49, but couldn’t hold off the ABC competition, Private Practice, which won the adults 18-34 demo. ER’s final season was recently extended a few more episodes, but it didn’t turn any heads with its performance on Thursday.

Nothing much to say about the 8pm hour, both because it was mostly reruns and the Presidential Address scrambled these fast affiliate numbers to the extent that drawing any conclusions based on them is unwise.

Note that the Presidential address at 8pm Eastern will cause all these Fast Affiliate Ratings to be adjusted in the final numbers. See below for more information.

Edit from Seidman: we don’t normally post final numbers, but since last night was such a mess due to the Bush address, I’ve added them below the overnight results — courtesy of “Travis Yanan” (you haters of unnecessary quotes – it’s not his real name, it’s a pseudonym) on Marc Berman’s forums.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Ladiesman217 says:

Yes, Smallville beat Supernatural so easily in the ratings. Take that Supernatural, SMALLVILLE Rules.

  2. Fefu says:

Dude.. Grey’s Anatomy is sinking :O

  3. Ben says:

    Go Univision!
I expected much more from CSI ratings….

    xxx

  4. stacy says:

Umm… Smallville and Supernatural aren’t competing with each other.

  5. johnthemon says:

Somehow I knew deep in my heart that 30 Rock wouldn’t stay strong forever…but I still definitely see it getting another season. Why didn’t they air Kath and Kim last night? Or Ugly Betty? Oh well what do I know. ER is looking really bad compared to the first part of the season. Nothing was really outstanding besides CSI last night.

  6. Jackson says:

I was hoping for Smallville to get more viewers but I’m still happy. So far this season I think it’s hit at least 4 million viewers for every episode unless I’m wrong?

  7. Julia says:

johnthemon, NBC announced that 30 Rock has already been renewed, along with The Office.

Interesting that the Scrubs repeat isn’t that different than the original in the demo. And it even improved on the original in viewers! (Most of that 6.6 mil was probably for the presidential address, but even in the 8:30 half hour it did better than Tuesday.)

  8. Bill Gorman says:

johnthemon, many nets kept first run shows away from 8pm because of the Presidential Address. CW and NBC’s Earl were the only new shows.

  9. Bill Gorman says:

Julia, I wouldn’t read anything into those 8pm numbers. They’re a jumble because of the address.

  10. Matt says:

    Woaaah! Grey’s took a hit. I didn’t know there were so many Merideth/Grissom fans…

Office and 30 Rock took less of a hit, though CSI did scuff them up. I can’t wait to see post superbowl numbers for those two…maybe add a million each. Heck I can’t wait to see post Amy Poehler show numbers for those two when it replaces K&K.

I’d have expected better from CSI. I was thinking no less than 25 million.

  11. Bill Gorman says:

Matt, it’s hard to say exactly how the final numbers will settle out. Figure 15 minutes of the 9pm hour (in the East) for CBS is the preceding repeat episode, so my guess is that the final CSI number at 9pm will be adjusted up somewhat. And likewise, the 10pm numbers above for Eleventh Hour contain about 15 minutes of Petersen farewell CSI, so they will likely be adjusted downwards.

  12. cool says:

I was expecting too better numbers for CSI.

  13. Jonathan B. says:

What was the half-hour breakdown for 10:00-11:00 on CBS?

  14. cool says:

And no way Eleventh Hour had a 4.2 in the demo, final numbers should be interesting.

  15. Bill Gorman says:

Here is the half hourly for CBS, note the big drop:

    10:00 18.507, 5.1/13, 3.2/9
    10:30 12.520, 3.3/9, 2.1/6

  16. JT says:

Grey’s Anatomy will have 4 to 5 million DVR viewers.

  17. Pokerface says:

Grey’s anatomy is still doing fine, 13 million viewers against the departure of Grissom in CSI is not bad. Granted, they are not the 20 million hit from 2005-2006. But they are still there, they just need to tweal a little.

I don’t think anyone even noticed that Ugly Betty was off schedule last night.

How did the Bush thingy did, ratings wise? LOL

  18. dave says:

I too would have expected more from CSI, although those are certainly meaty numbers. I wonder if the office will pick up viewers post super bowl, if it can it might be able to challenge Grey’s supremacy in the Demos. Also I wouldn’t be surprised if Office picks up about a million Hulu viewers every week with about 90 percent of them in the Demo. I’m one of them, and I’m not alone.

  19. DenverDean says:

GA had less than 14MM last week against BCS; CSI repeat drew 11MM. GA has aired 90 eps and CSI 190+. Which do you think will be around in five years?

  20. Julia says:

Bill, as long as you are giving breakdowns, what did the half hours on NBC at 10 look like? (Trying to figure out just how much 30 Rock is going to fall in the final numbers.)

  21. drew says:

Glad the Office and 30 Rock didn’t take too much of a beating. I thought last night’s episode of the Office was one of the best in a long, long time!

  22. Kathy B. says:

I’m hoping Supernatural’s ratings drop had to do with Grissom’s exit from CSI and not due to the fact that it’s been repeats for two months and people have forgotten it.

  23. Bill Gorman says:

    It’s Breakdown-o-rama!

    For NBC:
    10:00 6.580, 2.7/7, 2.1/6
    10:30 7.388, 2.8/7, 1.9/6

  24. john t. says:

wow is grey’s really sinking that fast?! it’s a shame since last night’s episode was one of their best in recent years. eh, i guess it’ll pick up again next week since last night’s csi was pretty milestone.

  25. TheKiller says:

And for CBS at 9pm please ?

  26. starmud says:

i didn’t get my ugly betty fix because of bush T_____T

  27. Bill Gorman says:

    All Breakdowns, all the time:

    For CBS:
    9:00 22.317, 5.8/14, 3.5/9
    9:30 23.936, 6.6/15, 4.0/10

  28. Julia says:

starmud, just another reason to be glad he’s on his way out, eh? ;)

Thanks, Bill. Looks like 30 Rock is going to take a hit in the finals. I just hope the demo will stay over 3.0. :(

  29. cool says:

Yikes, 30 Rock has more awards than viewers! :D

  30. Name Required says:

30 Rock will live on forever, its the equivalent of According to Jim. NBC lefties love it.

ER should have gone away years ago. Now its just sputtering to close. Even cameos from the days when ER was at the top of its game doesnt help. Its ratings are still decent but the quality slow bled out of it to the point its a shell of its former self.

  31. Tony says:

Yeah, that tends to happen to overated shows.

  32. chicc_o says:

SO happy for CW it beated FOX last night which is great not to see CW at the last place , i am not American so i don’t get the all time low ratings for the CW , also the high ratings for CBS , i don’t like any thing on this channel , excpet for How I met Your Mother and Moonlight last year , but nothing else !!!!!!

Any ways , Good for you SMALLVILLE , kill it every thursday ;)

Also Grey’s Anatomy better luck next Thursday’s , and as i can see Private Practice is doing better.

  33. CALVIN from Texas says:

How about the 13 minutes Bush spent intruding on our entertainment last night? By the way, wasn’t it 13 minutes he sat frozen reading MY PET DUCK on 9/11?

  34. Johnny Shoe says:

Bill/TVby the numbers, I have comcast & for the FIRST time last night my dvr corrected itself for CBS shows. Good thing because I was out. The shows ran about 16 minutes late & I didn’t miss anything. The little things in life…

  35. If you switched My Name IS Earl and 30 Rock I bet the ratings switch. Next season better be the last season for the show. If it was on any other network it would be canceled by now.

  36. Tom says:

    Bill,

I could be wrong, but I believe the second Kitchen Nightmares was not a repeat.

  37. Tom says:

I love Kitchen Nightmares, but there’s too much else on on Thursdays. I’d watch it any other night.

Hopefully Hell’s Kitchen doesn’t suffer from the Thursday slot.

  38. Tom, you are not wrong, but it’s not listed as a repeat in the table of shows. I think it just got confusing because due to the Bush address the 8p and 8:30p half hourly data is listed, but the 9pm hour is consolidated.

  39. fin says:

Wow its quite odd when you compare US television to the UK’s because BBC ONE or ITV gets like 6-7 million veiwers a day (like 9-10 on saturdays= which is like sundays for america), yes the BBC and ITV are mainstream but for NBC to have similiar numbers with some of its best shows is just weak (and the CW is even weaker). I guess the giant audiences in America are just tuning into cable now (at least more than they did before). Which is why i guess the comparison of the networks isn’t that fair.

  40. Steve says:

anyone know when curb your enthusiam starts again?

  41. fin says:

Jimmy what show are you talking about? MNIE or 30 Rock?

  42. fin says:

    * sorry the comparison isn’t fair as the audiences are different

  43. Julia26 says:

Looks like 11th Hour is doing well now that is no longer competing with Life on Mars… I hope LOM does well in its new spot following LOST, but if it doesn’t do good things for them at least 11th Hour can enjoy.

  44. Holly says:

Julia26, Keep in mind that these numbers include 15 minutes of CSI. They will drop significantly in the finals

  45. Matt says:

    Drew,
I disagree. I’ve been waiting for the return of the Office for quite sometime and was very underwhelmed by last night’s episode. Dwight and Andy’s duel was stupid and usually I love Michael’s interactions with Wallace at Corporate but this one wasn’t very funny. Glad the whole Angela/Dwight/Andy love triangle plot is over though, it was a bad idea from the start and didn’t make sense to me given Angela’s religious background. Hopefully once Stringer Bell makes his appearance things will be better.

  46. sam says:

why was kath and kim not aired in the last (2-3??) weeks

  47. cool says:

the finals are out and ‘Eleventh Hour’ drop a full point to 3.4 in the demo.

  48. Holly says:

On the other hand, CSI moved up to 24.25 million and a 6.6

  49. R.G. says:

Both Smalville & CSI were awesome – great episodes – good to see both did well.

  50. cool says:

Which make the retention even worse for EH.

  51. though I am a big Supernatural fan, I’m surprised it averaged as many viewers as it did last night. Two words: ewwwwwwwwwwwwww gross!

  52. Matt says:

Finals… The Office and 30 Rock went up :0!
Sure. I guess they weren’t really affected by the president goodbye-thing cause Earl aired exactly at 8:30.

24.25 is closer to what I thought for CSI.

  53. Maria says:

The only reason Smallville has a higher rating than Supernatural is because Smallville has less competition. If they were to trade time slots- Supernatural’s ratings would more than double Smallville’s ratings, CSI and Grey’s are the top 2 shows. I think Supernatural does well considering.
Smallville against those two shows would not do as well. That is what I think.

  54. cool says:

Maria, no way Supernatural will double Smallville numbers.. Supernatural is at 9 (which means highet HUT levels), it has a lead in (Smallville doesnt have lead in).

  55. Mel says:

That’s a good number for Supernatural –coming back from hiatus (with little or no promotion) up agianst a very, very special CSI. CSI and the Office hurt SN more than Grey’s. I would have liked to see it hit 3 million — but it was close! Ewwwwww! Gross!!! Is right! :)

  56. Mel says:

Oh and Smallville was up against a CSI repeat instead of a new Surviver.

  57. Maria says:

Cool; You didn’t even read what I wrote- IF THEY WERE TO CHANGE TIME SLOTS. The one time Supernatural was on at 8pm and 9pm their ratings went way up. And I was only responding to the person who thinks Supernatural and Smallville are in some kind of competiion, when they said Smallville did better. And the competiton in the same time slot does matter.

  58. Maria says:

    competition sp. sorry

  59. Julia says:

Maria, cool’s point is that Supernatural has the better timeslot right now. It’s got a good lead-in (for CW) and the 9pm hour has a higher HUT across the board. There are more people sitting in front of their TVs who might come across CW at that time. Ratings are supposed to go up at 9, not down.

  60. idizzle says:

These Supernatural vs. Smallville battles are almost as useless as the HIMYM vs. The Big Bang Theory arguments, can’t people see that all these shows are doing good for themselves, are well paired up and will most likely be around next season (unless that curious CW woman completely loses her marbles)?

  61. Jason says:

Hey Robert, what matters more? when a television network announces its fall schedule for the new season, how do they decide what shows are renewed or canceled? Do they look at the profits from syndication, the demos, they rating share, or the total viewing average? what mostly influences the decision?

  62. Jason, I’d like to think that total profit is the primary driver. if so, it seems that typically the most reliable indicator of profits are the Nielsen ratings among 18-49 year olds (see the link at top of the site for the “Renew or Cancel Index).

Syndication does play a role. If the network owns the show, you will see exceptions where ratings are less a factor than syndication (ABC with According to Jim) and if the network doesn’t own the show, they may get very favorable pricing (that impacts profits) from whomever does own the show.

But mostly, it seems to be the 18-49 ratings.

  63. Holly says:

I think they make scheduling decisions by flipping coins. :P

  64. Holly, you’re probably right, but since we don’t get access to the coin toss/drawing of the straws data, we have to rely on the ratings ;)

  65. Denise says:

I don’t get off work until 9pm, so I have to Tivo Supernatural, but my cable box messed up and didn’t let the Tivo get the right program, so I had to watch it…um…through other means.

  66. Dalz says:

Am I the only one that noticed just how great Private Practice did? Even after the huge drop in ratings Grey’s had, PP really held its own!!!

  67. Christy says:

    To DenverDean :

CSI will be still here in five years because it’s Plot driven and Grey’s Anatomy is Character driven. Nobody expected GA to have 20 m viewers this season. After 5 years 13m is quite good for a soap. That huge drop is only because of that crap Denny Duquette storyline who killed the show

  68. S. says:

No Datz, you are not alone is noticing. PrP not only held it’s own but in the final
numbers the 11th hour only did 0.1 more in the A18-49 demo (3.4 vs 3.3) than Private Pratice.

  69. jay says:

Are Grey’s low numbers only because it was a special CSI? You couldn’t pay me to watch GA, but I wonder if any fans out there find the show disappointing this season. For instance, I’ve stopped watching House because of personell changes I find difficult to understand. The only dramas which don’t seem to be losing viewers significantly are the cop shows. Hmmm, very strange.

  70. Beth says:

idizzle, I couldn’t agree more! I faithfully watch Supernatural at 9 pm. While I don’t make the same effort with Smallvile, I like it and know many Supernatural fans who thoroughly enjoy Smallville. Both groups should come together to help ratings for both shows!

  71. Paul says:

Grey’s Anatomy was puniched with tuff competion from cbs, and the bad lead-in at 8 pm bring down the numbers a litlle more.

a show start with 5 millions viewers is hard to rebuilt to great numbers.

  72. Alan Ginsburg says:

DOES ANYON KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE ACTUALLY WATCHED BUSH?

MAYBE IT’S EASIER TO ASK HOW MANY DID NOT WATCH.

  73. Bill Gorman says:

Alan, I have been watching the TV press and have seen nothing yet on the Bush address numbers, but my guess is they will appear somewhere on Monday. Regardless, the final numbers for Thursday’s regular shows will appear on Tuesday.

  74. Desilu says:

    Eleventh Hour is horrible hokum.

  75. weavermiami says:

Bill, thanks for your reply to Alan’s question about Bush’s numbers. Add my name to the list of the people wanting to see those numbers.

  76. evelyn27 says:

Supernatural was gross, and really freaky. I’m glad the veiwersship was almost 3 mil lion considering what else was on at the time, I hope it finally reaches the 3 mil. mark. Maybe CSI fan will switch over now that Grissom’s gone. :D
