Monday Ratings: House + 24 = Win

Posted on 20 January 2009 by Bill Gorman

Scoreboard FOX CBS ABC NBC Uni CW
Total Viewers (million) 13.455 12.746 8.587 5.918 4.386 2.396
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 4.8/11 4.1/10 3.2/8 1.7/4 1.8/4 1.1/3
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 4.1/11 2.8/7 3.1/8 1.3/4 1.9/5 1.5/4

The first Monday night pairing Fox’s House and 24 was a big win for the network as it beat the previously dominant CBS lineup and swept the viewership, adults 18-49 and 18-34 titles for the night. In fact, Fox’s adults 18-49 demo average for the night was the highest this season for any network on a Monday night.

Fox’s ascent didn’t hurt CBS much, it’s shows were either at (Worst Week, CSI:Miami) or above (Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Two & A Half Men) their previous averages.

ABC’s The Bachelor and True Beauty were very competitive in the adults 18-34 demo, winning three of the six half hours, but couldn’t compete with the viewership numbers of either Fox or CBS.

Poor NBC was humbled on Monday night as Superstars of Dance and Momma’s Boys combined to finish behind Univision in both adult demos we track. And against the heavy competition, CW’s Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill both suffered significant declines vs. last week.

Here are last Monday’s overnight results for comparison.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Ant says:

Is it my eyes p[laying tricks on me or is 24 lost in a few viewers since last week?

  2. Julia says:

Ant, no tricks, but season openers and closers are usually higher than the rest of the season. 24 retained most of its audience, and FOX is probably very happy.

  3. ZebZ says:

Anyone have any educated guesses as to how this will affect Chuck when it comes back, both for the 3D episode and, more importantly, the remaining weeks of its season?

  4. Ant says:

Yeah. Still not seen DVR numbers and i know a lot of PB fans will be flocking to 24 now. Im guessing there is a few more million to be added on the 24 rating from Online viewing etc

Still the 18-49 share is really good.

  5. Denise says:

On CBS, Big Bang Theory is listed again in the 8:30 spot instead of HIMYM.

  6. melbye says:

I can’t help thinking that FOX’s lineup is going mutilate NBC’s lineup once Chuck and Heroes comes back

  7. TonyS says:

I think this goes to show that House isn’t a great lead in for 24. It might have steadied a bigger fall, but the viewing figures didn’t go up. I think that they may have to consider putting 24 on at 8. It’s not a show that can be lead into with great success. You either watch it or you dont, and 12 million do.

  8. Shane says:

Thank goodness CBS is ending Worst Week early and putting on Rules of Engagement.

As for FOX, they’re finally showing some ratings prowess. We’re FINALLY going to have an actual race for “Most Watched Network” and not just CBS trouncing on their competition. If one things clear, though, I think CBS has the advantage due to their 10pm domination five nights of the week.

(I think the most interesting battle will be Thursdays at 8pm; if Bones is able to do as exceptionally well as it did on Wednesdays, it may finally thwart Survivor from its 8pm 18-49 crown).

  9. Nate says:

With Fox being a player now on Mondays, it doesn’t look good for NBC. ABC continues to stay strong with The Bachelor. NBC may very well finish 4th for the rest of the season even when Chuck and Heroes return.

As a big Chuck fan, the future doesn’t look so bright.

  10. Kyle says:

Finally a FOX strategy that makes sense. Putting it’s two dominant shows against an already stellar CBS line-up should create for some interesting numbers.

  11. Bill Gorman says:

Denise, thanks for the catch! Fixed.

  12. Chuck & Heroes are dead when they come back. Chuck will pull in mid 6’s while Heroes mid 7’s. Which for NBC is enough to renew both of them.

  13. Kate says:

if u guys come across any ratings for Kyle XY can u guys post the info, thanks. 8)

  14. Jack says:

Jack Bauer! What are the biggest numbers 24 ever did? When was 24 most watched? Does anyone know?

  15. Julia says:

Jimmy, the question, really, is what they’ll get in the demo against the new competition. I think Chuck will take the bigger hit than Heroes, but both will be hurting. At least Chuck is cheap enough that it might be able to survive it, but I still wonder how low Heroes can drop before it stops being profitable.

  16. on a relative basis, House @ 8pm hit Gossip Girl hardest of all

  17. Ant says:

Robert any news on the DVR numbers for the premier of 24? Thought they would be up by now

  18. Ant, the premiere was just last Sunday and Monday, forgetting altogether about when WE might see the data, the live+7 data for Sunday won’t be available at all for at least another week, and the data for Monday a week after that.

  19. GRD says:

Go “House”! Good episode last night too. (Although someone needs to coach Lisa Edelstein to hold that doll like it’s an actual baby, and not go slinging it around. :-) )

  20. josh says:

CW doesnt look good, the days of OTH/GG/90210 getting over 3m are over :(
Chuck is going to get killed when it comes back! NBC should move it to a night with less stuff on!! FOX did really well! as did CBS, im Surprised at how well ABC did :O

  21. how well The Bachelor is holding up seems to be an unheralded story, but it looks like the ship may have already sailed for True Beauty.

  22. Ricardo says:

    Poor Chuck. Poor Heroes.

  23. Beth says:

Does anyone know how well MTV’s The City is holding up? Did ratings go up or down?

  24. Plutonic Dude says:

Once DWTS comes back, Monday nights will be even more cluttered. Too bad NBC will receive the short end of the stick.

Fingers crossed for a 3D boost for Chuck. Heroes, on the other hand, will see less viewers but still have solid demos. Medium will probably grab 2nd place for NBC.

  25. R.G. says:

The following takes place between 8pm and 9pm (last night…)

    Bauer & 24 = BOOM! Awesome episode…can’t wait until next week…

    Clinko…Clinko…Clinko…

  26. Paul says:

    Amazing numbers for the bachelor!

without worst week cbs should have a higher averageon mondays nights.

Heroes and Chuck will be vanished when they return. mi guess chuck under 6 and heroes under 7!

  27. TonyS says:

I do wonder why Monday and Thursday seem to be where the higher profile shows end up. I know there’s an element of ‘we must get viewers from other networks’ but surely counter-programming is the way to go. The CW puts it’s man programmes against ABC’s women programming and look how well that works.

Surely they could find a new home for young skewing Chuck and Heroes, against maybe older skewing NCIS and Mentalist?

  28. R.G. says:

I think House & 24 would be more of a Jauggernaut – if FOX would STOP moving House from night to night…!!!!

    Now on it’s new night
    Now on it’s new night
Now on its new old night…Knock it off !!!!

  29. Julia says:

RG, this is the first time House has been moved from Tuesdays.

  30. Ant says:

I can see another 40m or perhaps more contract heading for Kiefer and the Gang if this keeps up

  31. Pix says:

Worst Week had terrible ratings, and I imagine they will only get worse when NBCs shows come back. Like I said before, it’s a shame because I find it really amusing. I also think Chuck will have similar ratings but Heroes will lose a lot.

  32. Zurna says:

Aww poor Gossip Girl. That is WAY TOO LOW. :(

  33. Unknown says:

Wow. Those numbers are incredible. Fox has been really smart this season. The House/24 combo is an incredible idea. And with Idol back, Fringe/Lie to Me with the idol effect and Bones at 8pm on Thursday, Fox might end up a good 2nd or even 1st place again. If only they can finally fix Friday night. I really hope they promote Dollhouse well enought to do good on Fridays.

  34. sam says:

BYE BYE WORT WEEK!!! HELLO CHRISTINE AS YOUR REPLACEMENT (besides rules of engagament)

  35. Terry says:

I to would love some ratings news on kyle xy!!!
I have been watching the bachelor and true beauty…I don’t mind either show to be honest…

  36. Kyle XY fans: we don’t get overnight data for cable shows unfortunately and unless the numbers are otherwise released into the wild, we only see cable numbers on a weekly basis — typically Tuesdays.

In the premiere *last* Monday (1/12) Kyle XY did 1.5 million viewers and a .4 rating among 18-49 year olds. We probably won’t see the numbers for last night until 1/27.

  37. johnthemon says:

I knew House and 24 together would be a dream-team. My big burning question is how will Chuck and Heroes be affected…hopefully not too badly.

  38. Unknown says:

Personally, As much as I love Heroes and Chuck, This does not look good for them. They already been struggling so far, but now with House and 24 skewing the young audiance, this may be a serious issue. NBC may end up how fox was during the start of the season. Good shows that just losing viewers and viewers each week do to the serious competition on Monday nights.

  39. idizzle says:

Julia, this is the first time House has been moved from Tuesdays THIS season. It gets tossed to Mondays routinely once or twice per season. Not to mention the 8pm, no 9pm thing FOX always does to it as soon as it has a new show that needs a lead in or to be tried out after Idol.
Anyway, House isn’t really sufering that much from it, it still does awesome demo numbers, got back some 2 million in total viewers since not being against NCIS and whatever it lost since S1 is to be expected with an aging show.

  40. Julia says:

Ah, you are correct. There were four episodes previous to this that were aired on Monday. Though this is only the second season that has ever happened, and it’s only happened once that other time, so that’s hardly “routinely once or twice per season.” ;)

  41. Ethan says:

FOX really does have a tight schedule for the rest of the season. If they hadn’t made any changes, Dollhouse would’ve premiered last night, and now I’m pretty glad they moved it to Fridays because there is no way it could’ve survived.

I just hope both Dollhouse and T:TSCC do well Friday nights. I know the chances of TSCC getting a third season is slimmer than slim, but I hope the 5.0-5.5 million viewers stick with it. I’m hoping Dollhouse gets around 6.5-7.0m, but I think it’s unlikely. FOX better not have high expectations. This will be the best night on television, IMO.

  42. Vader says:

On a sidenote, why on earth does FOX insist on not putting House episodes online until 8 days after they’re broadcasting? This is why I wasn’t able to catch the whole first half of this season. I missed a couple episodes, looked for them online later, and they weren’t there. I’m assuming it’s to punish people so they’ll watch it more live? Like it needs it anyway…*eyeroll*

  43. Erwin says:

Pff The CW is not looking good… I hope that The CW survive this but i think, at this time with the crisis The CW can get an AXE.. What do you think?

  44. Unknown says:

I hope it does get AXE!! The network is over. It was dumb for them to get rid of smackdown, Focus there demograph on teenage girls and they just dont have anything good. Cept for Everybody Hates Chris and Smallville.

  45. Julia says:

Vader, yeah, the problem the theory that that will make people watch it on TV, is that any FOX shows (including FX) that I really want to watch, I’ll just acquire in another way rather than wait to watch them legally. Their loss!

  46. melbye says:

How long is Dawn Ostroff’s mismanagement of The CW going to continue? They should either replace her or shut it down

  47. stacy says:

Congratulations NBC! you are easily the stupidest network this season!!! Delaying Chuck & Heroes until February and putting some horrible reality shows in their place REALLY worked well for you. I bet if you’re really lucky Univision will beat you in total viewers sometime soon.

As for the CW, I can’t see how the network is going to stick around if there numbers don’t improve, it might be time for them to actually looking outside the young female demo and start making shows that can appeal to multiple groups OR at least promote the shows that actually already do that (Smallville and Supernatural

  48. Jeff G says:

That NBC lineup is so strong the numbers should challenge WWE “rasslin” ratings.

  49. Dan says:

why is NBC so terrible at promoting their television shows and more importantly…actually picking the right ones to air?

Does this mean it’s the end for Chuck? :( That would be SUCH a bad call to can it.

  50. k says:

    aw gossip girl! :(
why is the monday night and thursday night competition getting so heat up? i mean since when did HOUSE get to be on Mondays at 8?! I blame that stupid doctor for bringing my Upper East Siders down!!

I hope the CW continues to do well, Gossip Girl and Supernatural are both AMAZING.

  51. chris says:

even wit shitty ratings oth beats gg 2 weeks in a row :-)

  52. cool says:

wow with the Bachelor.. I’m gonna make a prediction.. I think The Bachelor will beat Heroes in 18-49 when Heroes comes back.

  53. Jason says:

i really did hope that 90210 will be able to do better this week, but after seeing the huge decline gg and oth had last night, i wouldnt be surprised if it hit below 2 million tonight because of Idol.sigh =(

  54. Noah says:

Well I’ll be damned… FOX was right about something. Viewers for House went up with the return of Idol… hope that translates all the way down to Friday night.

  55. and gossip girl continues to prove that it is all hype

  56. Matt2 says:

FOX has a much improved Monday night and must be thrilled, but I bet even they didn’t expect such a strong battle from “The Bachelor.” This makes the third straight week of ratings growth for that little powerhouse. I wonder if ABC is planning to air the finale behind the return of DWTS? Right now it’s shaping up to be the highest rated Bachelor finale in years.

  57. cool says:

I dont think so, The Bachelor has proved that doesnt need DWTS lead in. Castle will have the lead in of DWTS and thenm, the sitcom ‘In the Motherhood’ starring Megan Mulally.

  58. Justin says:

NBC is holding Chuck and Heroes for February because they’re launching their spring seasons the day after the Superbowl. Not a bad idea, but it will probably be too little too late given the stiff competition from the other networks.

  59. Karen says:

Is there not any way to get Kyle XY numbers before next week? We are all so anxious about the future of this remarkable show that just hasn’t been given a good chance to survive by ABC Family (no promotion for this season except a week before the premiere). If you could find out something for us sooner than the 27th we would be really grateful.

  60. dutchie says:

I’m a very happy House fan!! But I’m a not so happy Chuck fan.. I hate that Chuck has to compete with my favourite show (house)

  61. KaylieXX says:

Thanks for the update on Kyle XY. Wish we could somehow get ratings info much sooner. Its a great show, my favorite in fact, and I’d really like to rest easier knowing we’ll have a fourth season. Everyone go out and watch Kyle XY!!

  62. Anber says:

    Good for House !
