Monday Ratings: Super Bowl promotions don’t help NBC’s ratings woes

Posted on 03 February 2009 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard CBS FOX ABC NBC Uni CW
Total Viewers (million) 13.27 13.02 9.60 8.44 4.66 2.43
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 4.3/10 4.6/11 3.7/9 3.3/8 1.9/5 1.2/3
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 3.1/8 3.9/10 3.7/9 2.9/7 2.1/5 1.7/4

All the Super Bowl promotion did not help NBC’s Monday night lineup much. Despite heavy promotion the night before, NBC was the fourth place network both overall and among the 18-49 and 18-34 age demographics. That has to be disappointing. CBS won the night in total viewers and FOX took the age demos.

While there was some 3D effect for Chuck in terms of the ratings – Chuck seems to have scored its best numbers of the year with 8.35 million and a 3.0/7 (rating/share) among 18-49 year olds. But it was not enough to make a meaningful dent when it came to competing with House (14.75 million and 5.5/13), The Big Bang Theory (10.89 million and a 4.1/10) and How I Met Your Mother (10.18 million and a 4.2/10).

House seems to be hitting Gossip Girl (2.27 million and a 1.1/3) hardest of all. Here’s what FOX had to say about the ratings for House’s 100th episode:

On Monday at 8p, the 100th episode of HOUSE opened with a 5.5/13 among Adults 18-49 and won the hour among Adults 18-49, Total Viewers, Adults 18-34, Teens and virtually all key demos. In fact, HOUSE outperformed its nearest competition in the hour by +31% among Adults 18-49 (5.5/13 vs. 4.2/10 for CBS’ Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother), +26% among Adults 18-34 (4.9/13 vs. 3.9/10 for ABC’s The Bachelor) and +40% in Total Viewers (14.7 vs. 10.5 Mil for both ABC and CBS). HOUSE was the highest rated program of the night among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34 and Teens, outperforming originals of ABC’s The Bachelor and True Beauty, CBS’ Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Two & A Half Men, Worst Week and CSI: Miami, NBC’s Chuck, Heroes and the season premiere of Medium and CW’s Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill.

All of the NBC Super Bowl promotion seemingly did better for Chuck (at least a teeny tiny bit) than Heroes (8.45 million and a 3.9/9) or Medium (8.53 million and a 2.9/7).

The unheralded story here is probably how well The Bachelor is doing. Check it out.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Julia says:

At least it pulled Heroes out of its free fall. It may actually manage to remain above 3.0 the rest of this season, something I did not expect back in November.

  2. Fin says:

At least Heroes had a bump up from december and november, and a 3.9 isn’t that bad, but i didn’t think that chuck would get a massive bump.

  3. Sinteligente says:

But Heroes was 0.7 million better than the last episode (7.78 millions). It´s not great, but at least wasn´t worst than “Villains”.
    Sorry for my english.

  4. Travis says:

Im happy the way chuck peformed. Its sticking close to the competition so i think with numbers like this is going to be renewed.

  5. Jack says:

NBC is probably not going to find any better competition on Monday nights right now. They probably have to stick with their current lineup of Chuck and Heroes. Medium will have to move if it sticks around.

  6. Jenna says:

I’m glad to see Chuck at least hit it’s highest numbers of the season…although I would have liked to have seen even better results. I hope this is a good sign for renewal!

  7. Nick C says:

I think people need to remember that the last time CHUCK and HEROES aired they were going against FOX’s TSCC and PRISON BREAK. Now they face HOUSE and 24. In that regard I think NBC has to be really happy with CHUCK and slightly relieved with HEROES. We’ll see how much they fall next week.

I think CHUCK can’t drop back in the 6s. HEROES can’t drop under 8M either.

  8. Fin says:

Actually considering the competition (but there was advertisement) i think Heroes didn’t do that bad, still good for Chuck. Just hope Heroes stays at least above 8.0mil and 3.5demo

  9. Steve says:

Considering the Lineup Chuck got put against with HOUSE and that it was not on TV for 6 weeks I was just going to be happy if it did not drop to bad. I did not think CHUCK was going to get a huge bump in the ratings especially since they hyped CHUCK all thru the Olympics and that did not help but considering it had its highest rating of the year and highest in the 18-49 bracket I will take it.

  10. Jeff says:

I’m almost positive Chuck will get renewed. Plus the rewatching of the 3D episodes on DVR’s will be big most likely. Hopefully Chuck’s viewers gradually go up. I know I am in for the duration. All the other shows are complete garbage. House doesn’t learn anything. 5 seasons of House being the exact same. Got boring.

  11. T says:

i do think with this rating woes for Monday Nights on NBC they should at least be happy about Chuck’s rating, despite how we wanted to make it past CBS or Fox but come to think about it, 8pm on Mondays are pretty much preoccupied with good stuffs on tv. If I were NBC they’d have to make a decision to renew Chuck for it’s third season, since Variety has been reporting that Chuck’s ending it’s 2nd season run on April. I mean the earlier renewal and hiatus of Chuck last years did more than just make it funnier and entertaining it was by far can go up against The Office and 30 Rock creatively speaking. I feel that NBC shouldn’t too picky on this year’s whose to be saved and whose to be a casualty. At 8.35M is pretty much a good fight for House and The Big Bang Theory which I think the best competition for Chuck is The Big Bang, I mean House pretty much has the same numbers from it’s previous slot. So I think NBC should renew Chuck. It deserves that rewards, even by just looking at it’s creative side.

  12. MWA says:

‘Medium’ will be back next year.

  13. Tim says:

Not sure why the negativity about NBC esp CHUCK. For it to be off the air for 7 wks and up against this brutal competition – the fact that it did a 3 is incredible really. Best ratings since 2007. Woo hoo Chuck!

  14. Jack says:

If NBC just lets Chuck build up its audience naturally and without these long breaks, it might just become a very strong show for the network. Taking 6 weeks off between episodes is not a good strategy. Trying to align big events with big shows only works if that show follows the event. NBC is getting desperate. Just order a third season of Chuck and be done with the questions and maybe your audience will remain loyal. That is as good a strategy as any of the ones not currently working for NBC.

  15. Nick C says:

CHUCK is doing ok for NBC right now. They can’t afford to cancel very many more shows. Plus Angela hints that HEROES is in more trouble than CHUCK (likely because it costs more).

  16. sdfds says:

Why am I constantly getting 500 Internal Server Errors?

  17. johnthemon says:

that’s actually about what I expected for NBC’s line-up. I didn’t think Heroes would bounce back any higher than a 4, and I really just had no Idea what to think for Chuck or Medium

  18. TomSD says:

What happened to CBS’ line-up from 9pm?
I cant remember the last time CSI: MIAMI came this close to 16 million.

How can The Bachlor pull numbers like this when the winner was spoyled weeks ago?

  19. it’s an evil plot by Bill to torment me.

  20. johnthemon says:

besides, Heroes did beat 24 in the demos, that’s got to count for something

  21. Nick C says:

You know who is paying the real price from the new improved Mondays at FOX? The CW. Dawn’s favorite show is pulling in some bad numbers against HOUSE and CHUCK. ONE TREE HILL isn’t doing too bad, but GOSSIP GIRL is pulling VERONICA MARS numbers. I know the Warners side of the CW is really getting upset about the drops.

Robert, yes it’s bringing a smile to my face. Word around town is that the heat is finally being turned up on Dawn. She may not last another season!

  22. T says:

i’d have to agree with Jack. Just when everything starts to get pumping and actually entertaining for the viewers NMC would decide to give it a 6 week hiatus. Now Chuck’s back at gaining audience for about 2-3 episodes again, it seems that the continuity of the story is being disregarded and as well as it’s audience. Why risk a good enough thing for a a show like Momma’s boy or that Dance Thing. It’s just like the CW trading a critically acclaimed show Veronica Mars for a show of beauty queens and farmers. i just don’t get the logic.

  23. I do know who is paying the real price, that’s why I wrote what I wrote about Gossip Girl. though lacking any “DAWN MUST DIE!” venom, perhaps you didn’t notice it.

One Tree Hill doesn’t have to face House or it would have had numbers closer to GG’s.

  24. Jack says:

I just read somewhere that Chuck is not coming back next week? What the hell? Is this true? They are waiting two weeks between episodes? I am getting dizzy with the lack of sense this makes. Is NBC losing its mind?

  25. Fin says:

WOW 3.7 is bad for 24! 24 was down 0.6 in the 18-49 demo week on. Hopefully Heroes 3.9 will continue next week and beat 24. But is 3.7 bad for 24?, i just assumed it was cos i looks like a high budget show.

  26. Paul says:

what going to happen when Dancing with the stars comeback, castle premiere, and rules of engagement returns»?=

  27. Cassie says:

I’m really glad that Chuck has a fighting chance at getting renewed.I’m astounded by the way the CW handles it’s shows.Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill are probably their best combination with buzz (which atm Smallville and Supernatural lack) and they’re throwing Gossip Girl to the wolves basically. It’s literally getting shredded against House!I’m just glad that they might be switching Dawn for someone else.

  28. Bill Gorman says:

Jack, TV Guide still has a new Chuck scheduled for next Monday, but that’s hardly the last word in scheduling accuracy.

Edit: But Bree is correct in that NBC.com has it next on Feb 16. I’d trust that date.

Edit #2: Well, maybe don’t trust NBC.com. Seems like the weight of evidence falls on the side of a new episode next week.

  29. Bree says:

Will Chuck be on next week? The NBC site said that they’ll be back on Feb. 16th. Typo, maybe?

  30. niall says:

is one tree hill being picked up for a 7th season?

  31. Nick C says:

Robert, yes I noticed. I just thought it was pretty big. I checked in with some CW people and the news I hear is good for everyone. I don’t want Dawn to die, I want her to go back to cable where her ideas WORK. In fact I’m all for her getting a chance to turn some cable netlet into a teen girl paradise.

Producers, writers, etc. need a stronger CW. They need a stronger NBC too.

  32. Ron says:

Anybody who thinks Chuck or any other NBC program did okay last night has to have their head examined. When you have 95 million people watching your promos the previous night, and you do a 3-D gimmick, and all you get is a modest boost you are in big trouble. All the NBC shows drop next week. These ratings are terrible coming off the Super Bowl promotion.

  33. Sheldon says:

I honestly thought that Chuck would do better, and im sure that NBC is not too impressed with those numbers. Oh well, long live CHUCK :)

  34. Deadbeat says:

Glad to see Chuck did decent in terms of numbers. I was not overly impressed with the 3D effects, and found it detracted from enjoying the episode.

I still find it amazing that many people enjoy the Bachelor. I’ve never watched it, and will never watch a show like that.

For all the Chuck fans, let’s hope the show gets an early Season 3 renewal!!

Great site, btw. One of the most informative regarding TV shows and what viewers are watching.

  35. FrankJ says:

Nick C, you mentioned Heroes may be in more trouble than Chuck because of production costs. I’ve seen numbers for Heroes discussed in articles, do you have an idea what an episode of Chuck costs?

  36. Nathan says:

My TIVO schedule says that there will be a new Chuck next week, “Chuck vs the Best Friend.” It would be just too idiotic on NBC’s behalf if there was no new episode next week.

  37. Name Required says:

24 seems to be making the same mistake it made last year. Peaking too early. Now its just a hostage crisis? Sending Jack back to April 1865 to stop the Lincoln assassination and blowing away John Wilkes Booth, and changing history so when he returned to the present Hitler’s son would be ruling America (which he would then have to kill), would be more interesting than this season. Heroes isnt that much better these days.

As for House, is it really possibly to scratch your head hard enough to dig out brain matter? That was nasty.

  38. Nick C says:

Bill/Jack the original plan was the 16th, they’ve moved everything up. A new episode will air next week. At least that is what the promo for next week said after last night’s CHUCK.

Cassie, the problem with a new network exec is they always get rid of the “pet projects,” of the previous exec. So something will happen to the teen soaps. I think GOSSIP GIRL survives, but be aware that new execs will be fast to pull a trigger on old pet projects of the previous regiment.

I have to disagree heavily on “the buzz,” the top two buzz getters for the CW are SUPERNATURAL and SMALLVILLE. The buzz on SUPERNATURAL is tied to the movies the stars are attached to, and on SMALLVILLE actually being better than previous years. The “buzz,” is so good the ratings are improving.

  39. Don M says:

We knew that NBC was going to take a hit on Monday night. Based on the recent results of ABC’s current Bachelor series/cycle and FOX’s 24 coupled with the Harpers (Two and a Half Men), you knew that Heroes had to hang tough.

As for Gossip Girl, don’t forget to factor in ABC Family’s “The Secret Life of an American Teenager.” That show has been a breakout for ABCF, that they are going to sign on similer shows and cancel Kyle XY.

Chuck had the best ratings ever, and Medium still gas in the tank. Still pull in the viewers unlike Journey Man and My Own Worst Enemy.

  40. Nick C says:

FrankJ, it’s pretty cheap in comparison to HEROES. It has limited sets, small cast, no big names and no big writers. HEROES has much too large of a cast, multiple set locations (many times brand new ones) and some more expensive “name,” writers (not that they appear to be helping) then you throw in the FX costs. CHUCK has FX too, but limited in comparison.

  41. Steve says:

They have 10 episodes left and if they plan on ending on April 13th they have to have an episode every week until the 13th

  42. Jack says:

Looks like Chuck was supposed to show an episode next week but they have removed it from the schedule and moved it back a week. It may have something to do with the first two episodes being swapped and there being some big continuity problem. Maybe they had to go back and film new scenes. I don’t really know since I can’t imagine NBC doing it without good reason. It is a brain dead decision otherwise.

  43. Nick C says:

Ron, I think NBC is happy. CHUCK showed what a 15% improvement despite going up against HOUSE and its 100th episode, plus the normal Monday competition. I think NBC screwed up personally. I’d have had CHUCK on after the SUPERBOWL and ditched the 3D idea for big guest stars and had Jay Chandrashkar direct/write again and maybe get some of his Broken Lizard guys in it.

  44. Ike says:

Jack said: “Taking 6 weeks off between episodes is not a good strategy.”

Expecting the cast and crew to work blindingly fast enough to have episodes 12-15 done by January instead of February — that’s not realistic. Post-production takes a while. Sheesh, I’m sure they’re exhausted enough as it is.

I mean, dang, dude, we got ELEVEN new episodes all in a row from Sept. through Dec. and you’re complaining? In the old days, most genre TV fans shows would’ve KILLED for 11 in a row in the fall. (Star Trek: TNG did it a few times, but after that, shows started getting more and more measly with the fall rations.) In this case, the break doesn’t seem to have hurt the show. Yes, NBC should air reruns of Chuck during the break, but strangely they’ve assumed it will perform as badly as a serialized show in reruns without really testing it (IIRC), so there aren’t really any better choices.

And anyway, if the show ran new episodes from Jan-Mar instead of Feb-Apr, then people would complain about the longer break until September. Assuming there will be a season 3. If the demos don’t drop off considerably after this, I think there will be.

And I agree that NBC could not have expected much better numbers than this for Chuck, given all the competition. I didn’t expect it to go above a 2.8 demo at best. I never found the 3D glasses and I thought people might wrongly assume it would be blurry and unwatchable without them.

  45. Nick C says:

Jack, you have it backwards. There was originally a planned break, and now they’re having a new episode.

  46. JT says:

If NBC really wanted Chuck to do well, they should have put it on after the SuperBowl. Might have done better than “The Office” due to the tie-in with the 3-D glasses. Who knows….I think NBC should be pleased that all their shows had more than 8 million viewers last night. Chuck will easily be renewed if it can pull in this amount each week.

The Bachelor continues to grow….I can’t beleive that one! When the has-beens return on Monday nights in March, ABC might want to plug another night with another edition of the Bachelor.

  47. Shea says:

Heroes is registering as 4.0 18-49 rating on variety and futoncritic. That’s it’s highest numbers since october. Last night’s episode has pulled Heroes out of its rut. It’s not in the clear yet from saying “The slump is over” but if the next two episodes are just as good as last nights…then THE SLUMP IS OVER.

HIP HIP HOORAY FOR HEROES! It even held off 24! (no offense to 24, because that’s a good show too.)

I think NBC will be doing some MAJOR changes to its lineup for next fall. I see Heroes being on tuesdays or wednesdays next fall and they could move biggest loser to mondays. Biggest Loser has proved that it can go up against all the competition in the world and still register 5.0 ratings!? thats good. That’s what I would do

  48. Julia says:

Jack, NBC tends to make those decisions (brain dead) when it comes to swapping show order.

  49. clutz says:

@Nick C, here’s a point of view from an absolute outsider to the industry:
Dawn Ostroff could take her CW soaps and run them on The N. Since the N became a 24-hour channel, is it planning on developing original programming? I see real potential in a genuine “new” fall lineup of orignal programming: GG, OTH,90210, even Privileged from the CW; keep Canada’s Degrassi: TNG, perhaps import a few more CTV series. Maybe Supernatural and Smallville would fit there too.

The N would be an ideal place for teen-oriented, limited run soapy dramas and sitcoms. I’d say do 24 new eps per year, divided to run Sept-Nov and Feb-April. Throw in a couple 2-hour holiday specials. Dawn could probably handle that fairly well.

  50. Gusar says:

I agree with Dom M, Gossip Girl’s biggest issue is “Secret Life”, not the other broadcast networks.

As for Chuck, getting 8M viewers and a 3.0 demo against such stiff competition, NBC would be crazy not to renew it. Chuck has been going up and further up throughout the entire season. It’s a keeper. People were saying that going against House will be tough for it. But Chuck doesn’t seem to mind.

  51. Julia says:

As for Chuck, getting 8M viewers and a 3.0 demo against such stiff competition, NBC would be crazy not to renew it.

This is one week where they did a stunt and it paid off. While this is definitely a good thing for NBC and Chuck, NBC would be stupid to renew based on this week. If it continues to keep decent numbers without the gimmicks, then they should renew.

  52. Thanos0145 says:

Next Monday is the State of The Union Address.

  53. Bill Gorman says:

Here’s the half hour breakdown for Chuck.

    8pm 8.560 million, 18-49; 3.0/8, 18-34; 2.6/7
    8:30pm, 8.137, 3.0/7, 2.6/7

Those new viewers may have liked what they saw, they stuck around.

  54. Julia says:

Isn’t that usually at 9, Thanos?

  55. R.G. says:

    I SEE I’M LARTE FOR THE PARTY…

NBC – THE NEW CW –so that’s why the big deal on Superbowl numbers —they still lost on their Monday nite…

put a fork in NBC —-their done!

  56. josh says:

I think NBC did OK :)

Chuck and Heroes did better then i expected, Medium clearly needs a good lead in, but still good, i dont think it will ever drop below 7m this season!

I really dont know what the CW can do, it cant move all its shows out of the way of house/American Idol!! Gossip girl has lost 1.5m viewers from the start of the season, and lots about 40% now!

  57. VYuci says:

On some forums people have mentioned that the State of the Union will be given on Monday. Can any confirm this?

BTW, I think Chuck did admirably given the competition it was going up against. House did air its 100th episode, but it seems like it didn’t do much for House. I’m pleased with the numbers Chuck got. Hopefully the only grow from here.

  58. Julia says:

RG, I think you’re overreacting. This is an improvement over every Monday for NBC since the very beginning of the season (and it may be the best Monday this season?) Every net takes its turn at the bottom. NBC has plenty of time to turn things around, though I don’t see that happening while Ben Silverman is still around.

  59. Cassie says:

It’s really amazing that at one point this season it got around 3.7 million viewers. Something needs to be done though, because the CW needs bigger numbers desperately. And Nick C., I do agree that Supernatural and Smallville have buzz when it comes to the actors’ movies, but Gossip Girl is getting an amazing amount of media coverage everywhere.Plus, Gossip Girl is a new show, which can still grow its following, while Supernatural and Smallville will at best keep theirs. The only thing the CW has succeeded at is winning the “teen demo” which is really good since that’s what the advertisers are interested in.

  60. tim says:

i believe that is a bad headline, NBC ratings went up. it wasnt major, but heroes and chuck went up, so i disagree with the headline

  61. Sam says:

Monday nights are probably the heaviest day in the week. House is still owning the 8pm slot. 24 was down a little, but I don’t think anyone at FOX is worried, at all. NBC show’s did “well” compared to lat year (Medium add better numbers last season though). Seems like Heroes will never be what it was again, but the demo are good. Seems like to me there is not gonna be a lot of cancelation in those show.

  62. johnthemon says:

i’m going to side with tim here. When I read the headline, I expected numbers similar to what we saw in the fall, 2.6 for Chuck, 3.6 Heroes, but really the numbers weren’t that bad.

Oh, and isn’t a 5.5 much better than what House was doing in the fall?

  63. JJ abrams says:

24 Sucks i can’t believe people still watch that show the things Jack Baur does is so unbelievable

Heroes season 1 was good but after that it was just unwatchable and it’s no surprise that it has lost it’s Popularity as well as Viewership ratings in abundance

    i am happy for CHUCK

    CHUCK rules

  64. Nick C says:

Cassie, the “media coverage,” is a lot of PR machine. Dawn makes sure GOSSIP GIRL gets it. I disagree on the “new show,” thing as well. SUPERNATURAL and SMALLVILLE are growing in viewership while GOSSIP GIRL is deteriorating. I also disagree on “winning the teen demo,” as they’ve not done that either. Advertisers care about 18-49 demo primarily, and teens are barely a part of it. The 18-34 is the 2nd most important demo. The “teen demo,” isn’t even in the top 5 most important demos. After 18-34 is households of $100K+ for instance.

The way I and many people inside the industry feel about the CW is “poorly.” You provide us with interesting facts about GOSSIP GIRL it gets a lot of media coverage. The CW does not use its PR machine to help SUPERNATURAL or SMALLVILLE (or REAPER last season). Despite all the “buzz,” GOSSIP GIRL gets it is deteriorating in ratings while SUPERNATURAL grows. If anything your points make one think “maybe they should be promoting SUPERNATURAL more and creating more buzz.” If the CW tried it could easily make SUPERNATURAL a 4M+ viewing audience and possibly break the 5M mark.

  65. Nick C says:

Sam, Monday might be packed right now, but I think THURSDAY is still the most competitive night of the week. However you may be right. MONDAY is stocked right now.

  66. Jack says:

State of the Union in February given by a president not even in office for 100 days? That is unusual. But if that is the case, then we will be waiting two weeks for a new Chuck episode and I cannot imagine this is good for the show. If anything, this could be the nail in its coffin.

  67. Alex says:

I would say NBC had a mixed night and you can really spin it in one of two ways.

In comparison to how Monday nights were going last year these numbers are really very good, especially when you take into account the new Fox line-up they’re going against. Alternatively you can say that nearly 100m people were watching NBC Sunday night and watching promos for their Monday line-up so these numbers are a little disappointing in that respect. Personally I would say the truth is somewhere in the middle – NBC will be happy but not overjoyed. And on the plus side I thought the whole NBC line-up was excellent last night, particularly the start of Heroes new volume, of course I also give them two weeks before they screw it up, again.

  68. Cassie says:

That’s something that we do agree on.Supernatural and Smallville are pulling in way better numbers than OTH and GG, which means that maybe they should be the CW’s main focus.I just think that THEY think that Gossip Girl could evolve to something as big or bigger.Right now, the CW has two mediocre shows (OTH & GG) and two shows that are doing really well considering their network(Supernatural & Smallville).

My point about the “teen demo” was basically just that teens are more easily manipulated by ads and product placement. Because of this, given the right product, the CW could be an advertiser’s dream.

  69. Julia says:

Jack, the State of the Union address is normally at 9, at least it’s been at 9 the past few years that I can recall. Chuck would still air.

  70. Craig S says:

Very competitive Mondays now that everything back. Heroes beat 24 in 18-49 and by a lot in 18-34, see if that continues. Considering Heroes still increases off its lead-in and is one of NBC’s highest demo rated shows, there’s no way that it’s in more danger than Chuck, at least not right now. Even if it is more expensive, NBC would try to find ways to cut back on expenses but still bring the show back b4 choosing Chuck over it if they only renew one or the other.

As for 24, I am kind of glad that the ratings are slipping, only because even though I like the show, it would be nice if they could go into next season knowing it would be their last, so they can make it extra good hopefully and at least end it the way they want to and not have it end on a cliffhanger or end abruptly without much notice.

  71. CreamPuffer says:

    Cassie,

Where do you get your facts? Last time I checked Supernatural and Smallville have gained viewers while GG and One Tree Hill have lost viewers. Also like you pointed out they advertise the hell out of GG and yet Supernatural/Smallville are the ones gaining viewers with so little promotion.

Also sweety, you do realize that those 2 are on Thursday night, right? If you don’t know what that means then let me explain. It is the most competitive night on television. Can you image what would happen to GG if it went up against Grey’s/CSI/Office? I don’t understand why you keep trashing those 2 considering that CW themselves put little effort to promote them. GG already has all the promotion it needs so why slam the other shows. Are you trying to say that they should move GG to Thursday?

  72. Jack says:

Julia, NBC.com has changed the air date to the 16th. There is no Chuck episode scheduled on the 9th anymore. Heroes is schedule for 9PM. So, looks like it is happening at 8pm. This is pretty bad news for Chuck.

  73. Cassie says:

    Creampuffer,

I don’t know your reading technique, but I haven’t said anything negative about Supernatural or Smallville! My point here has also been that the CW IS making a mistake by wasting too much energy on one show. As I said in my previous post, Supernatural and Smallville are pulling in bigger numbers, yet they’re completely being neglected.

I also haven’t been hostile in any way, so why don’t you just respect my views and thoughts and I’ll extend the courtesy? Thanks, Sweetie.

  74. Cassie says:

Also, GG was gaining viewers a lot from last season and it only recently started declining.

  75. Jennf says:

Shea: If you are thinking a 4.0 for Heroes is great let me put it this way…NCIS scored a 4.0 last week…and we all know how much older those viewers are…And no offense JJ but to say what 24 does is unbelievable then you go and say nice things about Chuck? Dont get me wrong I really like Chuck but you cant say that isnt as unbelievable as 24…

  76. Ron says:

All these Chuck fans trying to spin the Chuck ratings into a good night. The Super Bowl was watch by almost 100 million people that saw continuous Chuck promos, and they also had the 3-D gimmick. These ratings stink with that kind of promotion. It still finished 4th in the time slot. It will go down next week without the promotional push. Get it through your heads, people, Chuck’s ratings stink along with the other NBC shows.

  77. R.G. says:

Julia…okay — NBC maybe not done…but out of the frying pan and into another frying pan…..
…….I still think it’s all down hill from here with NBC – I just don’t see them being in number one in anything for the rest of the year…until 2010 winter olympics…they had NOTHING in the top 20 last week…they will have this week’s top 20 claim….but that’s it…stay in the frying pan and they burn – or put a fork in them-and their done—it’s a lose-lose either way…and don’t get me started with 5 nites of LENO this fall…a new reason to go to bed even earlier…

  78. Rob R says:

No offense to the fans of Chuck and Heroes, but do you think NBC really thought that if they aired a jillion promotions for those two shows in front of 90 million people during the Super Bowl just 24 hours earlier, that those shows would come in a DISTANT fourth place? Losing to the 14th season of “The Bachelor”? I am not predicting they will be cancelled or anything, but this just demonstrates what a disasterous line-up NBC has on its hands. The good news for fans is that NBC has very little that is working so Chuck and Heroes are the least of their problems……..but expect massive budget cuts and cast trimmings if they are renewed.

  79. Julia says:

RG, I agree that NBC is in trouble. But ABC was in trouble too, until it got Millionaire (which then lead to them being in trouble again due to very poor management). NBC may look like it’s in more trouble but that’s just because broadcast ratings are down across the board. Like I said, Ben Silverman is not going to save NBC and should be fired. But NBC isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

  80. Name Required says:

    24 realistic?

Sure, realistically no one can go 24 hours without sleep, never once eats, never once does #1 or #2 and come out looking cool—- EXCEPT Jack Bauer! Oh wait, the rest of the cast doesnt eat, sleep or empty their waste either. But still, the awesome power of Bauer makes him ultra cooler. Much cooler than a buy who looks like Greg Brady after getting out of rehab.

Heres my idea for “24″ Day 10.

11:00pm – 7:00 am – Jack sleeps (these episodes would be boring so I recommend skipping them)
7:00 am – 8:00 am – Alarm clock goes off Jack gets up brushes his teeth, empties his bladder, takes a shower and has bacon and eggs, toast and glass of OJ.
8:00 am – 11:00 am – Jack goes to see a movie “TERMINATOR 6: The Final Chapter”, orders popcorn with extra butter and a large diet soda. Jack talks during the entire movie commenting on it MST3-style.
11:00 am – 1:00 pm – Jack has lunch with Chloe, they sneak off to a hotel room for a quickie.
    1:00 pm – 4:00pm – Jack watches 6 episodes of Get Smart
4:00 pm – 6:00pm – Jack has dinner with Tony and they pick up a couple of hot chicks and cruise around Beverly Hills – Jack consumes large quantities of alchohol.
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Jack sleeps off his hangover.
8:00 pm – 10:00 pm – Jack watches a movie “Snakes on a Plane 3″ starring Kiefer Sutherland
10:00 pm – 11:00 pm – Jack plays 15 hands of solitaire and goes to bed.

  81. sam says:

i think NBC should be proud of heroes it was an AMAZING episode im hooked again!!….medium was good to but it scares me haha

  82. Paul says:

With the growth in cable, don’t will be better CW and mynetwork disappear?

Fox become a major network with 3 hours in primetime.

4 major network in broadcast: ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC! 8 pm-11pm, everydays.

  83. Matt says:

I’ll be NBC leaves the Monday line up alone next season. (Chuck and Heroes at least). Well they should so maybe they wont. Maybe only order half a season of them to begin with…

I don’t know where they could put Medium. Definately not an 8 PM show and there’s not many 9PM slots available. Sundays in the Spring?

I know it’s not going anywhere… but Gossip Girl has lost almost a 3rd of it’s viewers.

Kudos to FOX and CBS. (Though FOX needs some new hits. Their shows are getting on the older end.)

  84. Alex says:

“If you are thinking a 4.0 for Heroes is great let me put it this way…NCIS scored a 4.0 last week…and we all know how much older those viewers are…”

That’s a truly terrible comparison to make on several levels but the most obvious one is that last time I checked NCIS has more than double the total number of viewers than Heroes so should be getting dramatically bigger 18-49 demos not exactly the same or 0.1 higher. If anything your comparison shows Heroes is a pretty fantastic light, which I would guess wasn’t the intention.

It’s also worth pointing out that despite landing in 10th for the night on total viewers Heroes was 3rd in 18-34 – beaten by House and The Bachelor which isn’t a bad result at all and whilst its 18-49 is largely off the pace with Monday’s bigger hitters it beat arguably its real rival, 24 in the 18-49 despite having nearly 3 million fewer total viewers. Heroes is no longer setting the world alight but its not sunk without a trace and I would guess that NBC can look at those numbers and feel if the production team can turn things around and gain just a couple of million viewers they’re going to be very competitive in the demo.

  85. R.G. says:

Julia…I agree – please let me know when NBC gets Millionaire….LOL…
(i’m sorry, that was uncalled for….but I had to post it…hahaha)

  86. Rachel P says:

Lol, Name Required… That season sounds pretty epic. :D

  87. R.G. says:

Name Required…maybe JACK had 10 hours of sleep and a very big breakfast in the morning before his court appearance in the first hour…and he went to the bathroom at 7:55am….remember -the story starts at 8am…although it would be nice of them coming out of a washroom and/or finishing up a sandwhich in their once in a while…but 24 still is awesome…and I have stayed up 24 hours straight…actually 27 hours straight…MONOPOLY is addicting…

  88. R.G. says:

To me Chuck is just silly crap and you watch it when nothing else is on…it’s (semi)self contained episodes of a goof ball accidentally messing up bad guys plans…while the traditional cute blonde can’t decide if she loves him or not…
MOONLIGHTING with Bruce Willis & Cybil Shepherd started this trend and every other show copies it…its O-V-E-R –D-O-N-E & T-I-R-E-D

ZZZZZzzzzzzz….wake me up when Bauer is on

  89. Julia says:

Name Required, but how many of those games of solitaire does he win??

  90. R.G. says:

    …I’ve just realized – I am posting to myself…so until tomorrow…

  91. doug h says:

Good for Chuck. I hope that they can average around 8 million viewers for the rest of the season.

  92. chris says:

and OTH beats GG 3 weeks in a row :-)

  93. Paul says:

Chuck and Heroes on wednesdays nights in the next season?

i can’t guess nbc lineup for the next season without the 10 pm hour…

  94. Tony says:

People, stop drawing conclusions from these numbers for Heroes and Chuck. The only thing they say is that advertising those shows to 90+ million people work (how well it worked is debatable). Next week is what’s going to count. Is the boost going to be a one-time thing or will the numbers stay constant for the rest of the season?

My guess, enjoy it while it lasts Chuck and Heroes fans. It can only go down from here. All that publicity and all it only get 4th in the slot? Right…because it’s up against House. We should call that the Jericho defense.

  95. Alex says:

On the subject of where NBC should put Medium I think it would work well as part of their ‘crime night’ line-up that they are/were trying to put together. Although with Knight Rider and Life both looking doubtful for next season that might go down the pan anyway.

  96. Sheldon says:

If NBC doesn’t show a Chuck episode next week, they’re shooting themselves and the fans in the foot. That would be really stupid and drop the ratings badly. They’re honestly playing around with the show now!

  97. cool says:

The Bachelor must be the surprise of the season, yikes!

  98. Jesse says:

I think heroes is safe…considering mondays at 9pm HAS to be THE MOST competetive hour on tv with a resurgent bachelor, stalwarts like 24 and 2 an 1/2 men and now The Closer in the mix what could have been expected? an increase over the finale while facing much stiffer competition has to be a win

  99. idizzle says:

NBC might have distantly hoped for more, but won’t be too disappointed with the little growth for Chuck. The real measure of success is whether Chuck can hang on to a significant amount of those new viewers, so don’t go throwing parties yet.

Alex, a 4.0 is a 4.0 and Heroes is not getting some kind of premium for having only a third of the viewers of NCIS. It’s not a ‘have the least old people watching’ competition. Heroes like Lost will keep skating by on its decent demo numbers and that’s fine, but neither show gets extra cookies for having less total viewers than NCIS or House with comparable demos. In what world would that even make sense.

I remember back in S1 the characters on 24 were eating constantly. Now they are ever only drinking coffee anymore.

  100. Strahotski says:

I am a huge Chuck fan but I gotta admit that these numbers are absolutely disappointing given the HUGE promotion–regardless of the competition.

Look at it this way, 46 or so million viewers already have their viewing habits set for the Monday 8pm time-slot (House – 15 mil, BBT/HIMYM – 11 mil, Bachelor – 11 mil, Chuck – 7 mil, GG – 2 mil).

The Super-Bowl was viewed by 98 million viewers, so there were 52 million viewers who do not watch broadcast tv on Mondays at 8pm on a regular basis. So with all the 3D hype, Chuck was only able to persuade 1 million of these viewers to tune-in. :(

  101. Sheldon says:

But, I didn’t expect Chuck to do that great after seeing the ratings for The Office. If a show that airs right after the Superbowl can lose 70 mil viewers and drop to 20 something million, then Chuck definitely was not going to get that many viewers 24 hours later.

    It is disappointing though :(

  102. Busta says:

Medium performed solid numbers for NBC. It beat even the highest numbers of My Own Worst Enemy. If NBC takes a lead from CBS’s Ghost Whisperer and just leaves it in this slot the numbers should build like GW’s have.

  103. Carolyn says:

Chuck, Heroes and Medium all have a supernatural flair to them. Is that a good idea? Why not mix in a cop show or comedy somewhere in there instead.

  104. josie says:

Think about it Paul. Do you REALLY want CHUCK and HEROES to go to Weds. Night next year? I doubt NBC is going to sacrifice two of its rating earners to the AMERICAN IDOL gods.

  105. MWA says:

Hm…where oh where can they put Medium next season?
I would honestly pair it with Law and Order SVU. An ‘Emmy winning night of television’(Arquette and Hargitay) would be a good sell, along with the crime drama thing.
That is, if Arquette renews her contract (her 5 years is up this season) and Hargitay renews hers (up again this season).

NBc would be a lonely network without those 2 shows, which are there highest rated drams along with regular Law and Order.

  106. Paul says:

Yes “josie”, because wednesday nights have less competition during half season…

Heroes and Chuck in Fall have the competition from ESPN football night…

and then American Idol on Wednesdays are only 30 minutes…

so i think this night is the best shot from this two shows.

then medium on fridays at 8 pm no because GW’s…

Medium is a cop supernatural show that could perform well at 9 pm on mondays with a good lead-in: deal or no deal (??) or other better if they have any…

  107. Paul says:

    or

    monday
    8 pm medium
9 pm Law & Order: SVU

    friday
8 pm deal or no deal
    9 pm the listener

  108. Jesse says:

i say move heroes to sunday and go for a lois and clark type night, while i watch desperate housewives and heroes i dont think there is that much audience overlap

  109. Alex says:

“Alex, a 4.0 is a 4.0 and Heroes is not getting some kind of premium for having only a third of the viewers of NCIS. It’s not a ‘have the least old people watching’ competition. Heroes like Lost will keep skating by on its decent demo numbers and that’s fine, but neither show gets extra cookies for having less total viewers than NCIS or House with comparable demos. In what world would that even make sense.”

My point was that anyone trying to argue Heroes (or any other show) is on its last legs because its equalling the demo of a show that has more than twice as many viewers is using flawed and backward logic, particularly if you accept the notion that advertisers care about demo performance and not total audience numbers. If it takes NCIS nearly 20 million viewers to get a 4.0 in the 18-49 and Heroes less than 10 million total viewers to do the same then how is that bad news for Heroes? More over if you’re NBC and you look at Heroes demo/total audience ratio vs. pretty much every show not called House on Monday nights then you can create some positive spin/vibes on the show – in fact you can do that just be comparing it to the rest of the NBC line-up for the night.

All three NBC shows averaged around the same audience and yet Heroes was nearly an entire point ahead of Chuck in the 18-49 and was an entire point ahead of Medium. Meanwhile it was 2 points ahead of Medium 18-34 and a 1.5 ahead of Chuck. Meanwhile if you compare it to 24 on Fox, which averaged nearly 3 million more viewers it was ahead by 0.2 in 18-49 and 1.1 in the 18-34. The Bachelor averaged 3 million more viewers but was only ahead in the demos by 0.4 and 0.3 respectively these aren’t huge margin and whilst Two and a Half Men gets nearly double the total viewers as Heroes its only 1.5 ahead in 18-49 and actually loses to Heroes in the 18-34.

To try and argue that Heroes comparative strength in the demos vs. its comparative weakness in total audience doesn’t matter really doesn’t add up – it is important because it gives NBC reason to care about the show. If they can regain just a fraction of the old Heroes audience, say back to 10 million what happens to those demo numbers then?

  110. Julia says:

Alex, at 4.0 Heroes is not in any danger. It was in danger when it was in a free fall and down to 3.5 and looked like it was just going to continue to fall. I don’t see anyone saying in this post that Heroes is going to get canceled off of these numbers. But despite that, Heroes was still 3rd in its timeslot, so it’s nothing to trumpet from the roofs either.

  111. cool says:

The fact that Heroes was beaten by a show with 14 seasons it says too much. Unlike Lost, Heroes has only three seasons and the free fall is alarming. I expect normal numbers next week (3.5 demo)

  112. tom says:

i didn’t check out all the posts here so not sure if someone already brought this up BUT…

if all the nbc promos didn’t work for chuck and heroes etc… then you think maybe all the sponsors who spent all that money for 30 seconds or one minute only… might come to the realization that it doesn’t help them either?

  113. Ike says:

At this point, any show that exceeds a 3.0 among adults 18-49 is a “hit.” A 4.0 is now pretty uncommon. The sinking networks will grip these shows like life jackets.

I have to agree with Alex: Advertisers are demo-crazy, so those excess age-50+ viewers for NCIS don’t matter to the ad rates.

But I also strongly agree with him when he said, “of course I also give [the Heroes writers] two weeks before they screw it up, again.” Last night’s Heroes was surprisingly compelling but I’m sure it’ll derail soon enough, at least until we eventually get to the episodes where Bryan Fuller rejoined the writing staff.

Cool said: “…Heroes was beaten by a show with 14 seasons….”
The ratings ascension of an old show like NCIS is highly unusual.

  114. Gojou says:

    NewsFlash:

CW should have a new pet project (not related to GG, Priv, 91210), or promote their best horses (Supernatural, Smallville, and ANTM).

  115. Yasser says:

you MUST all be HAPPY for 24 !! i mean come on it’s in His 7th season !!!!
just take a moment and think what HEREOS will do in his 7th Seaosn !!
for me i think it will be Canceled in HIS 4th
    ( sorry 4 my ENGLISH )

  116. Jeff G says:

NBC has floated their PR that the Super Bowl would propel them into a new season of ratings. They stated the same type PR about the Olympics. What sports event is next on their agenda to propel them into yet another new season. 4th place after all that promotion is not a “Propel” moment.

  117. Ike, I don’t think it’s quite that simple to say any show that exceeds a 3.0 in 18-49 is a hit, although its true from a rankings point of view. Last week, even with Super Bowl, Post Game, Post Game office and American Idol, only 20 airings had a 3.0 or better, including repeats of The Office and How I Met Your Mother (there was no new Grey’s or Desperate Housewives last week)

The rankings unfortunately don’t compare relative cost and the relative cost of Heroes is rumored to be higher than just about everything. LOST probably ain’t cheap either, but it got a 4.9 rating. I believe Cool was referring to The Bachelor and not NCIS. NBC talks a lot about managing margins, not ratings. Margin-wise, at least currently and based on TV viewing, The Bachelor looks like the much better property. But The Bachelor has no DVD or syndication value.

  118. Jeff, “Promotion doesn’t propel NBC” would’ve been the better headline!

  119. cool says:

Every episode of Lost costs 3 millions, Stephen McPherson said that in January I think.

  120. Amber says:

    Good for House !

  121. Pooh says:

Medium use to get 11mil ratings, before they moved it, and then put it back.

I hate it when channels move programs just to watch the ratings flop, and then put it back, expecting the ratings to return.

  122. tom says:

btw: lost also sold 40 million dollars worth in the U.S. alone and just on dvd… for their last season. that doesn’t include blu-ray or any dvd or blu-ray sales overseas.

and lost is sold by abc to other markets. they get a lot of money back based on that 3 million per episode.

  123. Nick C says:

tom, that’s pretty easy to do when seasons cost what $40? That also mostly helps the production company or studio that made the show more than the one that aired it.

  124. Jared says:

As a Heroes fan, I’ll take what I can get. I know the ratings aren’t that great, but to be honest most people probably feel like they can’t get into it now even if they want to because it’s halfway thru the 3rd season. Last nite’s episode was pretty damn good. It was back to the awesomeness that was season one. So while I doubt (altho I hope!) Heroes gets anymore, I don’t see it really losing any. I say the numbers stay about the same now if they keep up with episodes like last nights.

  125. Nick C says:

HEROES isn’t in a good place. It’s too expensive. If renewed I see massive cutbacks and a shrinking cast.

  126. jason says:

Gossip Girl only started going below 3 million when House moved directly against it. And even with that, up through last week, it’s the CW’s #2 show in 18-49. It’ll probably fall now, but still. It is not a failure.

  127. cool says:

CW’s #2 show in 18-49? Smallville, Supernatural, America’s Next Top Model, OTH and 90210 has better numbers.

  128. Doug says:

ABC studios makes Lost. ABC airs Lost. It’s winning all around for Disney Co.

  129. Doug says:

To add: this is why ABC is airing this season of Scrubs. It’s doing doing gangbusters for the network, but ABC Studios is making big bucks on each extra episode produced. All profits eventually go to Disney, no matter where they’re made.

  130. tom says:

abc makes money from selling commercials on lost
    abc makes money syndicating lost
abc makes money selling dvd’s and blu-rays of lost
abc makes money selling the show to individual countries around the world

end result… abc is making lots of money off of lost. they know how much it costs to make. they apparently don’t mind. why? because they are making money. and it won’t stop. once the show is over they can still sell dvd’s, blu-rays… and on whatever the next technology is… as well as syndicate it in the future for future generations of tv fans.

    abc+lost=happy
shows like bachelor and dancing (nothing against them) but they are mostly useless after being aired… though the dancing tour is probably making some bucks for them

  131. cool says:

You’re correct thedemonhog , that was the interview I saw. I confused the numbers.

  132. Alex says:

“HEROES isn’t in a good place. It’s too expensive. If renewed I see massive cutbacks and a shrinking cast.”

Cutbacks would be nothing but a good thing for the show at this point the cast is far too big and impossible to write for and they have over Season 2 and the first half of Season 3 relied far too much on big effects shots to make episodes and stories impressive. Of course its also worth pointing out that I don’t think it’s a case of if it gets renewed at this point. NBC will cut the budget and bring it back for a fourth season before axing it unless the demos absolutely tank over the second half of season three.

  133. ANIL says:

Wow what the heck is up with gg’s numbers? It dropped miserably. I myself have not been enjoying it as much as I did in its first season but this is sad.
I hope it does get a 3rd season. But as long as its not like getting 1 million thats ok enough for the cw.

  134. Nick C says:

jason, actually it dropped below 3M months ago. It has been steadily dropping since October.

  135. Riff Rafferty says:

“Chuck” isn’t in any immediate danger since Silverman likes the show and NBC has worse problems, but NBC spent an awful lot to get precious little in return. Me? I spent several days looking for one of those confounded SoBe water displays, and when I finally found one, of course there were no pairs of glasses left in it. So I threw on a pair of red/green 3-D glasses I had lying around. 2 minutes into “Chuck,” I realized I needed yellow/blue 3-D glasses. I didn’t have those. So I changed the channel. “The Big Bang Theory” wasn’t in 3-D, but they had Leonard and the gang showing up at Penny’s ex-boyfriend’s apartment. He lived in Apt. — wait for it — 3-D.

Seriously, if you’re going to do a lame gimmick like this, is it too much to ask that you make the glasses a little easier to find? (And, no, I’m not calling Pepsi and giving them my address so they can send me a pair… and I can only imagine what else.)

  136. Kate says:

I think NBC needs to take a look at their very successful cable stations and instead of having their big shows go with long breaks- program year round. Shows that air 10-12 episodes in the fall come back in the spring while other programming steps in in the winter and summer. Air half seasons with no breaks and no repeats and then you can have shows like Medium step into rotation with the net offering quality year round programming.

  137. Jesse says:

Riff, exactly how would you have made them easier to find? Would you prefer they mail a pair to everyone in America? People keep saying how they should’ve made it easier, I don’t know how they could have.

And while The Big Bang Theory isn’t in 3-D, it also isn’t funny either.

Moving on, i’m indifferent about Chuck’s numbers. They’re sort of what I thought would happen, maybe a tad above my expectations. But as was said above, the real test is next week. If it goes back down to where it was, bad things are going to happen.

  138. Schmokey says:

Just me, or is that a 10% drop in viewers and demo for 24 from last week? It’s also a 15% drop in the demo since the high water mark of 4.4 received by the first half hour of the first Monday showing.

So we are not yet halfway through 24 and it’s already halfway to the 30% drop off in the demo that I predicted after watching the two night premier. Look for it to scrape down near the 3.0 area by the end of the season. Last night was a new low for the show, by the way. Dumbest ep of the year.

And, yeah, I know that it’s sick that I hate it but am still watching it, but I liken it to my (also) sick need to check out the traffic accident as I drive on by.

Chuck is dead. Long live Chuck.

Best rating ever for Chuck, but I have to believe that was not the number NBC was looking for when they devoted literally tens of millions of dollars in Super Bowl real estate to promoing Chuck. I also have to think Ben Silverman may actually be the worst network exec in history. His decision not to air Chuck after the Super Bowl in lieu of the Office was a gigantic brain fart. I guess we will find out Thursday if it paid any dividends, but I would have thought Chuck could have benefitted far more from the slot than any other NBC show, and especially more than The Office. If they were going to try and bump up a Thursday comedy, they should have gone with 30 Rock.

After dumping out on Heroes one hour into the season premier, I came back for the mid season premier of The Fugitives. I was massively disappointed that Tommy Lee Jones was not in it, and I dumped out again after a half hour. I expect ALL of that bump in viewers was due to people like me wanting to see if Heroes was any better yet. It wasn’t, so I expect an immeadiate return to its season long slide starting next week.

On a side note, when did Parkman become a pedophile? Watching him with that girlfried of his was just creepy. They also had zero chemistry, which I attribute mostly to her having to kiss a fat guy who is old enough to be her grandfather.

By the way, with all the hype around the Chuck episode, as a regular (but not devoted) watcher of the show I have to say that was the worst episode of Chuck I’ve ever seen by a large margin. If the show were that bad on a regular basis, I’d not be watching it all. It was boring. The acting was atrocious. The 3D was extremely 2D, while the show itself was almost 1D. And anyone who did not have a pair of the glasses must have spent much of the show trying to adjust the color and contrast on their television set.

Way to totally screw up a walk in the park, Mr. Silverman. If you worked on Wall Street, you’d likely get a nice bonus for your work so far. As you work in television, can I validate that parking for your way out?

  139. idizzle says:

Alex, I did not say Heores was in danger of being cancelled at any point. I simply pointed out that this demo/total audience ratio you made up is significant of jack shit.

  140. Riff Rafferty says:

“And while The Big Bang Theory isn’t in 3-D, it also isn’t funny either.”

Spoken like a “Chuck” fan. How could they have made them easier? Better distribution would have been a start. Then maybe, I don’t know, sending stores enough pairs so they don’t run out. And possibly letting stores have them well before January 31, which was the date the stores I go put them out. Better yet, they could have just done the thing in red/green 3-D, since I imagine most people have a pair of _those_ lying around. Best of all, they could just let the show’s merits — or lack thereof — stand on their own and not have to resort to gimmicks to sell the thing. Mostly the last part.

But enough of that silly show.

Now McG letting Christian Bale walk all over him, his DP and his set — THAT’S funny.

  141. Bill Gorman says:

Re: the Chuck 3D hoopla. It may not have helped the NBC show that much, and it may have frustrated people, but it did bring our site its biggest traffic days ever attributable to Google search alone (as opposed to a direct link from a traffic firehose like drudgereport). ;)

  142. Matt2 says:

    Just some observations:

Paul, the lineup you created for NBC’s fall 2009 looks really good. I hope they take your advice. I think it really maximizes the little they have to work with at the start of next fall, especially knowing that they’ve basically given up on the 10pm hour. Of course some of those iffy shows on your roster may go into the trash bin before the end of this season.

There seems to be no end to the growth of ABC’s, The Bachelor. As the anticipation builds towards the finale, ABC must be salivating over the potential 14 to 15 million viewers (+/-) for the final rose ceremony/wedding proposal. The big question is who’s more stunned by this; ABC or the rival networks. My guess is that they already are planning either a Bachelor Women Tell All special or an After The Final Rose concluding show or both. If they’re really on top of things, they’ve already secured the rights to air the actual wedding.

  143. Bree says:

So, anyone get a confirmation from NBC whether or not there’ll be Chuck next Monday (Feb. 9th)? Their site has been inconsistent. First it was “Chuck versus the Best Friend” for the 16th. Then the date got switch to Feb. 9th. Now, supposedly “Chuck versus the Suburbs” will be the next episode on Feb. 16th. What’s up, Chuck?

  144. Liz says:

Looking at the ratings, Heroes is 2nd in 18 – 34 and 3rd in 18 – 49, means to me that old folks are watching Two and a Half Men. From what I’ve seen of it, that makes sense.

I watched Heroes. Very exciting and fun. I had to watch all the Sylar scenes again right away. Sylar and HRG really make the show. I’m glad they are finally doing something with Nathan.

I watched the first few episode of 24 but found it too predictable. I never bought into the idea that one device could give terrorists access to every government facility. Maybe I’ll pick it up on Hulu.

  145. johnthemon says:

the thing about the superbowl promotion is, people may have said “hey that looks good, maybe I’ll tune in!” But then the next day they remember that Chuck is on teh same time as “The Big Bang Theory” or “The Bachelor” or “House” (whichever they watch) and of course don’t tune in. Same goes for Heroes and Medium, people may have been interested, but not enough to skip out on a different show

It all comes down to the brutal competition.

  146. Strahotski says:

There is presidential news conference this Monday at 8pm ET. Therefore, no new Chuck. NBC will air a rerun, “Chuck vs. the Cougars” on the west coast.

Episode 2.13 “Chuck vs. Best Friends” was scheduled to air 2/9 but will be aired on 2/23. NBC will air episode 2.14 “Chuck vs. the Suburbs” on 2/16 because it is probably a Valentine’s Day episode.

  147. FrankJ says:

Unbelievable… I just saw that about the schedule change and hoped it was a mistake. This is ridiculous. Two episodes now shown out of order. And I don’t understand how they can show “Suburbs” and not go straight into the sweeps story arc, its going to be a mess showing “Best Friend” after that.

I can’t imagine how much they’re having to re-shoot or edit. As it was it was obvious the ending of “3D” was re-shot. Way to go NBC, ruining every bit of momentum gained from the Super Bowl promotion.

If Chuck can’t get traction after this mess it’ll be a frakking shame.

  148. Julia says:

Weird, only NBC seems to be airing this special. Or maybe they are the only ones who have announced the change so far?

  149. StraHOTski says:

“As for “Who,” the Peacock has opted to keep “Chuck” on its Monday schedule through April 27 while “Deal or No Deal” will take over the 8:00/7:00c hour on May 4, May 11 and May 18.” http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=7945

“At NBC, the launch of the network’s version of UK format Who Do You Think You Are? has been delayed indefinitely, as NBC has decided to up its episode order for spy series Chuck. That show will occupy the Monday 20.00 slot through to April 27, and on May 4 it will be replaced by the first episode in a new series of Deal or No Deal.” http://www.c21media.net/news/detail.asp?area=1&article=47440

Is NBC ordering an additional episode of Chuck? Or does this mean that NBC will pre-empt (or show a rerun) one other time so that Heroes’ and Chuck’s finale air the same night?

If NBC is ordering an additional episode of Chuck, this may be a bad sign. The additional episode may be to wrap up all the story-lines as a series finale.

  150. Kate says:

Considering the fact that Chuck was up against HOUSE and Big Bang Theory and after about 6 weeks of being off the air had gained an extra million viewers is very promising. I have to admit that if TSCC stayed where it was on Mondays, Chuck probably would have gotten couple more million viewers. Chuck is still in the game. Chucks ratings are not getting any worse – it’s getting gradually better despite the incredible competition with the viewer eating HOUSE. I think this is the worst season creatively for House. It’s the same old house every season and there is no growth for his character. Why is it that people can watch the same old House where Chuck is really creative and fun.

  151. Sheldon says:

Oh my word, im really hoping that this additional episode is not the end :(

  152. Alex says:

“Alex, I did not say Heores was in danger of being cancelled at any point. I simply pointed out that this demo/total audience ratio you made up is significant of jack shit.”

My comments on the subject of Heroes demo vs. total audience were a response to this from Jennf:

“If you are thinking a 4.0 for Heroes is great let me put it this way…NCIS scored a 4.0 last week…and we all know how much older those viewers are…”

As I said originally its backward logic to try and paint Heroes numbers in a poor light because they’re the same as a show with more than twice its total viewers. And as I went onto say there’s no way people with NBC look at those kind of stats and don’t think ‘what if…?’ in regards to Heroes numbers.

  153. jeff says:

Yeah, I agree, House is getting old when it comes to being interesting…He’s racist, the other character plots have to pick up the slack for it. The only reason I watch the episode the next day on the Fox.com is because Number 13 is smoking. But I stick to Chuck religiously. Just a fun show. Yvonne is also pure wow to the pupils.

  154. El Presidente says:

Now Chuck is being screwed by the President! NBC better wake up and remember that it has a good thing going if it would just let its viewers see this show on a consistent basis – anyone know if NBC is planning on putting the show on later tonight or anything?
