Updated: NBA All-Star festivities, The Closer, WWE RAW, and Monk lead week, Damages to return despite ratings

Posted on 18 February 2009 by Robert Seidman

damagesTNT had a nice week, grabbing the top spot with the NBA All-Star game.  TNT actually took the top four spots, and five out of the top ten spots and the top scripted show with The Closer.   TVbytheNumbers favorite Burn Notice was down some from last week, but still in the top ten.  Monk was USA’s best performing scripted show (assuming you don’t count WWE RAW as a scripted show).

The best SpongeBob could muster was 13th, but we’re not worried for the yellow and porous wonder who is now a hit in China, too.

Please keep in mind that any of the numbers outside of the top 20 are sorted by number of viewers, but are not ranked.  Hundreds and hundreds of shows were not included.  The years old That’s So Raven continues to mystify – especially the midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning airing. It was seen by more viewers than the initial airing of last week’s Battlestar Galactica (which was a great episode).   And oh no, cover your eyes Moonlight fans, it  was down 20,000 viewers from last week.  ::mock gasps::

Hilary Lewis at Silicon Alley Insider tipped me off to a story she wrote where FX  both spins the numbers (extra airings, DVR viewing) and has confirmed FX is committed to Damages for season 3 (and confident it will continue even beyond!).  Especially interesting was the increase in 18-49 viewing attributed to DVR (from 497,000 for the initial airing to 828,000 via the live+7 numbers).   I buy that FX is committed to a season three, but I don’t necessarily buy that it has anything to do with the initial additional airings or the DVR numbers.

No matter how  you slice it, the initial airing was beaten by a rerun of Moonlight on SciFi.  And also beaten by every individual airing of That’s So Raven! Every show that airs episodes multiple times gains audience by doing so, whether it be Burn Notice, ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption or FX’s own Nip Tuck. Nip Tuck also has multiple airings, but it’s initial airing beat all three Damages airings on Wednesday, and an additional airing of Damages on Sunday combined (2.33 million for first airing of Nip Tuck vs. 2.018 million for all four airings of Damages).

Sure, I know there will not be as many DVR viewers for That’s So Raven and Moonlight, and all the numbers I’m listing here are live plus same day DVR viewing, but there’s nothing particularly unique about Damages getting more viewers via multiple airings.  And though the Damages DVR percentages are somewhat unique, I’m pretty sure the advertisers don’t care much about that. It makes for great spin, but doesn’t probably mean much in terms of additional advertising revenue.  But despite that,  I don’t know that the Damages on-air ratings are particularly important to FX anyway and I can sum up why in two words: DVD revenue.

I’ve enjoyed this season of Damages more than I thought I would.  At least right up until the last two minutes of last week’s episode (saw it coming, but hated it anyway!).   But, I’ll be watching this week.  And I’m in an almost immeasurable population – I watch it via On-Demand instead of DVR.  For whatever reason, I can’t find FX in HD in my HD lineup so I can’t DVR it in HD, but, it is available via On-Demand in HD, so I watch it that way.

These numbers are only basic advertising supported cable. If I see anything for HBO and Showtime, I’ll post them here.  As for requests, sorry, but there’s just no good way to do it.

Update: James Hibberd reports that Big Love averaged 2 million, and Flight of the Conchords averaged 826,000, while new comer Eastbound and Down only averaged 671,000 on Sunday night. Still haven’t seen any U.S. of Tara numbers.

  1. serialnik says:

    Leverage – 3,21 mln! Great!

  2. NYC says:

Talk about going out on top – Monk’s still pulling in good numbers.

  3. Jim says:

Looks like the first half-hour of Clone Wars did well. I know Cartoon Network aired two back-to-back new episodes on Friday night. Hopefully the second episode did well enough.

  4. serialnik says:

Does anyone have numbers for 1×04 episode of Leverage?

  5. Holly says:

    ^When did it air?

  6. @Jim, I posted the better performing episode, but the gap between the two wasn’t big. Serialnik, post the date of the episode for 1×4 and I’ll see if I can dig it up later.

  7. johnthemon says:

    it’s official

“Damages” is FX’s “Friday Night Lights”

“Battlestar Galactica” has lost a lot of Mojo since Season 1 (not sure how much, but I know it’s steadily been losing steam). I guess people just don’t care anymore.

  8. paul says:

Robert could you please tell me how Kyle XY did?

  9. sorry for leaving off Kyle XY. 1.366 million (that’s Monday 2/9 at 9pm — won’t see 2/16 until next Tuesday).

  10. TomSD says:

Acording to Scifi “Battlestar” has about 2.5 million viewers with Live+7 numbers, around the same as season 1 numbers.

  11. Jon, haha. somewhat in the irony dept., FNL actually airs (syndicated) on FX. Two airings last week, one 871K, one 854K.

  12. Paul says:

Kyle XY is up! now doing better than Lincoln Heights and Greek yet it’s cancelled, it makes me sad:(

  13. James says:

Please, Big Love and United States of Tara ?

  14. Tedd says:

FNL numbers on FX are really surprising. The show is cheap to produce. Maybe FX will consider buying it from NBC.

  15. bob says:

What’s up with Sonny With A Chance? It got so little viewers, was there something else in its timeslot or something?

  16. Stephanie says:

Robert, I’m just curious — is there a website that shows the difference between Live / Live+SD / Live+7 numbers? Is Damages the only show with that type of increase?
USA Network re-runs its programs so often I’m wondering if there’s any significant impact on their ratings…

  17. Stephanie, we post a lot of live+7 numbers for broadcast shows, but there is sadly nothing like that for cable shows. Shows like Burn Notice and Battlestar Galactica get good DVR bumps on cable w/live+7. but those shows also have a higher first airing than Damages and it’s easier for Damages to have a high % of DVR since its numbers are relatively low (similar to 90210 on the broadcast side).

  18. sam says:

please food detectives and Solitary 3.0…thanks

  19. josie says:

Not that I’m complaining, I love the show, but DAMAGES must be being produced for free to keep going with these numbers. Or GM (Cadilliac) likes the few eyes that are watching it.

  20. Jim says:

Thanks for the info Robert. It should be interesting to see how Clone Wars fares in reruns on TNT.

  21. serialnik says:

Robert, the 1×04 episode was on december 23, 2008.

  22. serialnik: Leverage averaged 2.656M on 12/23.

Sam: Food Detectives = 920,000, Solitary 3.0 = 212,000. I will not be reporting those numbers regularly, I hope you understand.

    No more requests, sorry.

  23. Victor Brazil says:

Hi!Robert, could you please tell me how “Trust Me” did?

  24. NYC says:

WOW-Kyle XY WENT UP in ratings last week. That’s good to know.

    Thanks so much, Robert.

  25. Victor, it should be in the table above (between the two That’s So Ravens). I’ve cleared our caching so hopefully it will show up (originally i had a table without it), but if it doesn’t, try clearing your browser cache.

  26. sam says:

thanks robert…….how are those numbers compared to the other shows on there respected networks (food and fox reality)

  27. josh says:

wow, FNL does nearly as well as damages on FX! i know your not taking requests for this week anymore, but would you be able to put more from abc family on next week please.

  28. Dylan says:

Hey ROB i know you dont like when people ask cerrtain ratings but i was woundering what was TNA IMPACT ratings?

  29. Josh, normally we get a weekly ABC Family highlights ratings press release, but probably due to the Monday holiday, this week we didn’t see it.

  30. Noah says:

Thanks for that bit on Damages, Robert :)
    Very reassuring.

  31. John says:

How did star wars perform after all star Saturday night on TNT?

  32. Lynne says:

All I can say is myself and my husband who enjoy Damages we do DVR the show because it comes on so late 11pm in our area. So we watch it the next evening. When daylight savings time kicks in on March 8th then we will be able to see the show at 10pm. :)

  33. ryan says:

How do you lose roughly 4 million viwers in an hour i mean The Closer got 5.44 and Trust Me 1.91??? Its official Trust Me is dead and i thought so since its premiere since the show sucks.

  34. Ladiesman217 says:

    Where is Dadnapped?

  35. Stephany says:

Do we see the ratings of Monday, February, 16th next tuesday? I want to see what got more viewers, Dadnapped or Spectacular! I’m rooting for Nick!

  36. Christy0405 says:

I still don’t understand how is it possible for The City to be watched by 1.6 millions for it’s first three episodes and then under 1 million people :-/

  37. sam says:

dadnapped killed spectacular in the ratings

  38. Christy, I’m not sure what you’re talking about since I didn’t post any numbers for The City. It wasn’t under a million. remember outside of the top 20, the shows while sorted by # of viewers are NOT ranked. HUNDREDS of airings have been omitted.

  39. I’m very interested to see how Psych does once Monk is gone.

  40. Jon K. says:

Robert, if you have a chance could you post the ratings for Iron Chef America next week.

  41. Sammy says:

Monk’s next season is the final one, not the current season. Therefore, next week’s episode is the season (not series) finale.

  42. Christy0405 says:

    Thanks Robert i didn’t understand !
So is it possible that The City drew more numbers than Rock of love ?

  43. Christy, yes, the way I do these lists that would definitelybe possible, but it wasn’t the case this time (The City averaged 1.186 million).

  44. sam says:

Robert i know you HATE this but could you please tell me the numbers for Chelsea Lately even though it airs more then once a week (5) just one nights good :)

  45. Elyk says:

I asked you last week for The Price is Right. Maybe next week?

  46. Christy0405 says:

Thanks Robert you’re the best :-)

  47. moonlightfan says:

    Hi,

Thank you for posting moonlight numbers. last week for the first time it aired I think invasion wasn’t on. there was a star treck mini-marathon. I know, cause I watched it. Looks like sci-fi decided to take Invasion out of the equation. But it also seems as if Moonlight built on Invasion’s numbers. Startrek reruns not helping. But they are keeping moonlight for bsg’s lead in.

  48. John says:

ive given up watching Damages. its so dull this yr.

  49. Kayla says:

I wonder what is accounting for the decline in MTV’s ratings? The Real World debuted with over 2.5 million and has somehow lost a million viewers. The City’s ratings seem to be down signficantly which makes me wonder why MTV renewed the show for a second season. America’s best Dance Crew seems to be their top show.

  50. Molly says:

Do you get ratings for digital cable? It would be interesting to see how the 1 hr premiere of Degrassi did last Friday on The N.

  51. Jack says:

I think Pysch and Monk have different fan bases, but they are both detective shows. USA may want to try and add a show aimed at younger viewers that will capture more viewers in the key demos for Pysch’s lead-in.
