Thursday Ratings: Grey’s Anatomy still the demo king, Survivor stays strong

Posted on 20 February 2009 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard CBS ABC FOX NBC Uni CW
Total Viewers (million) 13.92 11.47 8.04 6.24 4.61 2.12
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 3.9/10 4.2/11 3.0/8 2.5/7 1.9/5 0.8/2
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 2.2/6 4.1/12 2.6/7 2.1/6 2.2/6 1.0/3

A typical Thursday of mixed leadership with CBS grabbing the most viewers and ABC winning the age demographics.  Survivor may be long in tooth with the Tocantins edition,  but it’s holding up pretty well with both viewers and demos about the same as last week’s premiere.  With the continuation of the Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice crossover, Private Practice won the 10pm hour and easily so in the age demographics over Eleventh Hour. The return of Noah Wyle as Dr. Carter didn’t seem to do much for ER’s ratings.

I confess, I’m still watching Hell’s Kitchen.  Yes, I like Lost, Battlestar Galactica , Life on Mars, Life, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Supernatural, but sometimes you have to take the edge off with a little bit of Gordon Ramsay.

Speaking of Supernatural, did you ever notice how at least in the aggregate, the Thursday CW shows do better in repeats than some of the shows targeted at women 18-34 do with original episodes?

Among 18-49s, CSI delivered its lowest original episode ratings for the series excluding airings on Thanksgiving.

The Office and 30 Rock were repeats last night.

Ugly Betty came in third place in viewers, and fourth in the 18-49 demo during the 8pm hour.

For comparison, here’s last Thursday’s overnight report.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

It’s the only night CW manage to score over a million in repeats… that’s ridiculous.. Go supernatural go!

  2. Justin says:

Everyone has their guilty pleasure show, and Hell’s Kitchen is a fun one to have. Glad to see it’s holding up nicely in the demos.

  3. Jack says:

    woah CSI 16.85 Million?

    is that a season low?

  4. cool says:

Private Practice is really hurting ER!!

  5. Lourdes says:

When does the GA/PP crossover end? In any case, PP lost many viewers compared to last week.

  6. Anonymous says:

Looks like Betty is on life support…

  7. Julia says:

Jack, that may be a series low.

  8. Margo says:

How much does it matter in the ratings that the new “Bones” episode was online the day before it aired in the US, and that it aired earlier in Canada? The show also gets little promotion and has a sporadic on/off schedule. I just wonder how much all of that plays into the ratings?

  9. rick says:

bones was down a little last night but still a solid second

  10. S. says:

The crossover ended in the GA episode. PP the 1st non crossover episode.

  11. Sammy01 says:

im happy with bones ratings and demos, it was never going to beat survivor but it got 2nd place both in viewers and in demos.

  12. Sammy01 says:

im happy with bones ratings and demos, it was never going to beat survivor but it got 2nd place both in viewers and in demos.

  13. cool says:

the crossover ended in Greys. PP was a normal episode.

  14. cool says:

the crossover ended in Greys. PP was a normal episode.

  15. josh says:

wow PP was down from last week, but still ok. Poor ugly betty it going down the pan, but i do hope that abc give it one more season in a wednesday slot!

  16. a.) hi folks, I’m really, really sorry about the site outage :( b.) CSI, at least in the 18-49 demo *was* a series low for original episodes excluding any Thanksgiving airings.

  17. matt says:

i like “my name is earl” but last nights episode was beyond stupid. I cant see how close to 7 mil watched last nights episode. it seems whenever they get away from the list the show drags

  18. Matt says:

“ER” was hurt by “The Office” and “30 Rock” being repreats. It built upon its weak lead ins, while the others fell from strong ones.

  19. Vader says:

OMG let’s panic because CSI is down to a measley 16 million viewers and a 4.5 demo! Spare me… *rolls eyes*

  20. John says:

who cares about Er? its over this yr.

  21. VYuci says:

According to Marc Berman, My Name Is Earl got 5.93 million viewers, but the same demo numbers. I know viewership numbers don’t matter much, but the difference is interesting. Did someone have a typo?

  22. Vader, it isn’t interesting in terms of renew/cancel decisions, but it is interesting in the one star leaves, new star comes transition wasn’t exactly seamless. While not particularly surprising perhaps, interesting enough to not be eyeroll worthy ;)

  23. VYuci, I have 6.721 from two reports for MNIE, if Berman reported 5.93 he screwed up and listed the one hour average (combo of MNIE/K&K) and not the individual results for MNIE. I do that frequently myself…

  24. Average Joe says:

ER is like an old moldy piece of bread. Its sooooooooooo old. Still watch it only because I watched it from the beginning. Sort of. I switch between that and TMZ to catch the latest adventues of OCTOMOM !! OCTOMOM should be the villian in the next spiderman movie.

Anywho – in 2011 after LOST ends, they should do Survivor: LOST where some of the cast of LOST as “The Others” pick off the Survivors one by one dragging them back to the compound and voting whether to released them or stick them in that gizmo in the Orchid station that sends people back to the mainland. At the start of each episode a flaming arrow lands on the beach with a note for their latest challenge – the winner is immune as usual from getting the boot. Im sure CBS and ABC could work something out.

  25. Lourdes says:

I think ER should’ve ended 2 seasons ago. There’s nothing new there, nothing to explore.

  26. Alan says:

Really touching to see Carter return to ER. I confess, I have watched every season of ER since the start in 1994, I have barely missed a single episode in 15 years. I still watch it probably because it’s comfortable, like an old friend I get together with on Thursday nights. The series finale will be a major tearjerker, for sure.

As for Hell’s Kitchen, yes, I confess, I do watch it too, but I’m disappointed by its numbers this season. Not a fan of FOX deciding to put it Thursdays at 9:00. It clashes with my Office & 30 Rock hour and it also causes HK to suffer in the ratings.

Putting HK Thursdays at 9:00 causes it to lose old people to CSI, womento Grey’s, and young people to Office-30 Rock. Not a smart idea for FOX.

  27. Lourdes says:

    Average Joe:
    OCTOMOM! lol!!!!

  28. Alan says:

Actually, Joy Behar on Larry King Live yesterday was the one who kept calling her “The Octomom”, which made her sound like a character from X-Men or something.

(Sorry Joe had to give credit where it’s due)

  29. Paul says:

CSI was 5th in 18-34??! OMG!

Good numbers to PP, specially in de demos!

  30. JT says:

I’ve said this before, but I think we’re going to see CSI skid downward for the remainder of the season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Grey’s beating it in total viewers when May rolls around. William Peterson was the heart of that show. While Laurence Fishburne is a fine actor, the show just isn’t the same. I really hope that CSI doesn’t sputter around for 10 more years with a revolving door of cast members the way L&O has, but it just might cause the ratings will remain decent, albeit unspectular, in the next few seasons to come.

  31. J says:

Private Practice held up great with a stand alone episode. The crossover seems to be a success.

  32. Nick says:

i have been watching E.R for 15 years now and yes …i was and will always stay Loyal to it

  33. Average Joe says:

I wonder if Carter will die on ER as it fades to black and it turns out the whole show was just in his mind was a fantasy as he laid there dying? Sounds like Life on Mars with a pinch of St. Elswhere.

  34. Mark says:

I think CSI is having a problem working in LF’s new character. With him being the new ’star’ and his character not being the boss, its been a different type of show trying to put the emphasis on him. The other more established characters are barely in the stories since he joined.

I like LF as a actor and his character as well. He just shouldn’t be the central focus of the show. Hopefully its just temporary to establish his character quicker. Its too bad the character didn’t come in with more experience and be Gil’s replacement. But that can’t be changed now.

  35. TomSD says:

Are you sure about CSI having series low numbers. It was on Friday for half a season before moving to Thursday.

  36. No, I’m not sure, just passing on what came in the report. No idea whether that is only for the Thursday 9pm slot (excluding Thanksgiving).

But Fridays in the fall of 2000 were a bit different than they are now, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it included them.

  37. Nick C says:

Yeah, it’s scary when both CW Repeats outperform some new episodes of the “Brand,” shows.

That says something. I’m not sure what, but it’s something.

  38. Jon K. says:

I hope 11th gets picked up for another season, they added a new regular character to the show last night which seems to be a very good addition and helps to strengthen the show.

  39. Lourdes says:

I think CSI might end next season. It’s an excellent show, but it’s about time. I think PP’s ratings will drop even more next week.

  40. Lourdes says:

So what would be Octomom’s superpower? To populate the world or something like that?
P.S. I hope no one is offended by this ;)

  41. steve says:

I dont think its time to panic about CSI yet imho the time to panic will be if it drops to around the 10-12 mill mark. Bones seems to of hold up well

  42. Fin says:

One of the Ugly Betty actresses said that Ugly Betty was renewed for a fourth season, but with no offical announcement I doubt: its just to stop people who think its cancelled from not watching it.

  43. I think in the case of the actress it’s at least also what she WANTS to have happen. Since that’s the GOSSIP column we don’t know, but it is interesting she went as far as to say “we just got picked up for another season”.

  44. Ratings aside the return of Noah Wyle as Dr John Carter on ER was GREAT. His story arc by the episodes end was highly involving and very surprising.

    chuck

  45. Beetlebury says:

    Yeah for Supernatural!

I just have to say that I LOVE that you talk about Supernatural.

I wonder if the CW did that it would make a difference? Hmmmmm …..

  46. Tyler says:

Ouch, that’s pretty low for CSI. Think Grey’s will overtake it soon? And Betty’s been going up for the past couple of weeks but it’s still not looking good.

  47. Mel says:

“Speaking of Supernatural, did you ever notice how at least in the aggregate, the Thursday CW shows do better in repeats than some of the shows targeted at women 18-34 do with original episodes?”

Why, yes, Robert. Yes I have. It continually mystifies me how the CW does business. Its all very well and good to have a target audience and a brand and all that, but isn’t it also kinda important to keep an eye on what is actually working — not what you wish was working and not what your PR dept is trying to convince everyone else is working? Is it me? Or does Dawn have her head in her Prada briefcase?

Or am I just being goofy– thinking that when your key shows are pulling less than 3 million viewers total — no matter what the demo is — it ain’t all its cracked up to be?

I was kinda iffy on Dollhouse last week — this week will be important . . .

  48. Doug says:

I doubt that’s CSI’s lowest episode in 18-49ers to date. When it first premiered, it aired on Fridays. In viewers, for original episodes only:

    17.0/15.8/14.4/14.3/15.2/15.0/15.7/12.9/15.7/12.6/14.9

While I don’t have the 18-49 data, I doubt that an airing Friday at 9pm that drew 12.9 million viewers got more than a 4.4 rating in adults. If you can correct me on this, please do.

  49. Good for you Robert that you watch Lost and Life on Mars I like those shows you should watch Ugly Betty too!

  50. Doug, see my comment way above. ABC Fantatic, I will not be watching Ugly Betty, but then again I don’t watch most or perhaps any show whose core audience is women 18-34!

Mel, I wish I knew how much the average episode of Gossip Girl generated in advertising revenue for new episodes and repeats, and the same for Supernatural. I’d feel much more qualified to offer an opinion.

  51. matt2 says:

It looks like Survivor is so strong it will bury Bones in 2nd place at 8pm for the remainder of the season. And in the battle for third place Ugly Betty’s cleverly written hour of nonstop big laughs continues to outpace and outgrow a My Name Is Earl juiced by the comedic antics of superstar, Danny Glover. While I have to admit UB was without a doubt the funniest episode of any comedy on tv I’ve seen all year; I would love for Darnell and family of My Name is Earl to get a spinoff.

No, the sky’s not falling at CBS. But, as Grey’s Anatomy’s ratings steadily increase and CSI continues to shed a million or more each week, it won’t take long before there will be a meeting of the minds. Grey’s already has built a huge advantage in the demo’s. The gain in viewers after being much maligned by the media all season must be such sweet vindication for Shondaland. Lesson of the day- no matter how many times you get punched around and knocked to the ground, if you are a true winner you’ll have the boldness to get up again and fight for your fans. And I don’t know that they will be recognized by the Emmy association, but the performances by the primary stars over the course of the last two months has been phenomenal. Even the performances of the secondary role players has been chilling.

Finally, it’s official! Private Practice became a stand alone hit last night with no crossover stars from Grey’s Anatomy. Congrats to them and again a lesson on how great actors in great roles telling stories that arouse such high emotion from the viewers they transcend the gimmick that inspired it all.

  52. R.G. says:

I love Hells Kitchen – but they normally run it in the summer – I can’t give up CSI though -so Hells Kitchen loses this round with me…

  53. TomSD says:

Just 9 years ago a new procidural on Fridays averaged about the same numbers as Greys Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and House does today.

  54. Fin says:

HAH matt the greys anatomy veiwers most likely just couldn’t be bothered to switch the channel: i mean medical drama fans now have a whole night from ABC. Thas not a stand-alone hit thats being GA fueled. It did crap before in the fall when PP was on it own.

  55. S. says:

    @Fin
On Wednesday Private Practice, stuck between 2 dudes, was the only survivor, if it’s numbers were crap, what do you call the numbers of Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, Elli Stone, Knight Rider, Life, Life on Mars, Lipstick Jngle, Terminator or even the Dollhouse?

Before the crossover PP’s retention out of GA was around the same as Brothers and Sisters out of Desperate Housewives, in the 60-65% range. Now it was 75%. The cross over did make people give it another try, and some stayed on. It might not be a stand alone hit, but it’s the only show that manages to get the GA people to stay tuned. It is the only hit out of GA since it moved to Thursdays. Lost did well in the slot, but Lost was already a established show…

  56. Joseph says:

” I will not be watching Ugly Betty, but then again I don’t watch most or perhaps any show whose core audience is women 18-34!”

You’re hurting my dreams of an Ugly Betty/Supernatural crossover….

  57. CW orders Melrose Place pilot. I don’t see doing a whole post about it, but figured I’d post the info somewhere. this seemed like as good of a place as any:
