saw rumors of this the last few days, but CBS has now confirmed that it has ordered two more seasons worth of Survivor. Via CBS press release:

- CBS ORDERS TWO MORE EDITIONS OF “SURVIVOR” FOR BROADCAST DURING THE 2009-2010 SEASON
CBS has ordered two more editions of SURVIVOR to be broadcast during the 2009-2010 season. These will mark the 19th and 20th editions of broadcast television’s longest-running reality competition series. Jeff Probst, who won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Series, will continue as host.
“SURVIVOR is one of CBS’s signature series and a symbol of enduring quality and entertainment on prime time television,” said Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment. “Every season delivers a fresh new adventure for viewers and a time period-winning performance on the network. We’re excited to deliver audiences two more editions of outstanding production values, exotic scenery, new castaways and, of course, our Emmy Award-winning host.”
“I am happy to be able produce two more editions of survivor for our loyal fans,” said Mark Burnett, Executive Producer of SURVIVOR. “Our show stands for high quality family entertainment and all of us on this team will continue to deliver on this promise.”
“We have a unique relationship with our audience,” said Jeff Probst, host of SURVIVOR. “They tell us what they like and we listen. It’s worked for 18 editions and we’re looking forward to delivering two more satisfying seasons!”
This fall, SURVIVOR: GABON (8.4/14, 13.8 million viewers), the franchise’s 17th edition, continued its ratings dominance, winning its Thursday (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) time period every week in viewers, adults 18-49 (4.6/12) and adults 25-54 (5.8/14).
The 18th edition, SURVIVOR: TOCANTINS, premiered on Feb. 12 and continues to place first in its time period in viewers (13.61m), adults 18-49 (4.5/13) and adults 25-54 (5.6/14). Last week’s episode built on its premiere by +2% in adults 18-49 (4.5/12 from 4.4/13) and by +4% in adults 18-34 (2.6/08 from 2.5/07).
The groundbreaking reality series, which premiered in May 2000, has anchored CBS’s winning Thursday lineup since February 2001.

This show will never die. Just like The Simpsons and According to Jim.. oh wait.
Survivor is my favorite show on TV. Glad it will be back for more. Ideally, I’d like to see them run a Tuesday show and a Thursday show, but not let the contestants know. Then when they are down to 4 contestants on four tribes, they could surprise them by saying combining the two shows into one and giving out double the prize. I think this would give Survivor fans more of a fix without oversaturating the show. By the time the 2 new tribe of 8 were ready to merge, viewers would feel like they already knew the characters.
i just regergatated. I want to find the focus group that ok’d this show back in 2000 and push something heavy on them. This is when you have the unemployed and retired (focus groups) dictate what to bring out of idea/pilot.
I must say, the continued popularity of this item baffles me even more than the phenomenon of American Idol. In Survivor, contestants are picked through a screening process where no particular talent is necessary. Then, they backstab each other until only one remains – no audience participation in the voting.
How has Survivor not grown tiresome by now?
clutz: The growing popularity of The Bachelor is more baffling.
A different and semi-diverse cast and new gameplay twists each season.
Still manages to be entertaining and interesting after 18 seasons.
This is the only reality show that I watch on TV, but I hope the 20th season will be the last.
I suck at actually getting around to applying for this nonsense…told myself I’d be going in for the 19th installment (the one scheduled to air this Fall) and totally missed the cut-off date. Ah well.
And I’m sure everybody else here has their fingers crossed, as do I, that the rumored all winners edition is just around the corner…
DDK, all winners? Richard Hatch back from prison!

Me too. I don’t know why, but it just feels different from all the other reality dreck out there. Psyched that there’s going to be more coming, though it was pretty inevitable, seeing as how it’s still one of CBS’s top performers.
Survivor is awesome. Every new season is 16 more people you get to learn about and see how the react in those situations. Only think I would like to see are more physical challenges and maybe the unedited versions of the show!!!

*thinks back to Sugar from Gabon*
I like your unedited versions idea.
*thinks back to Richard Hatch walking around naked*
I don’t like your unedited versions idea.
Bill: Richard Hatch will be released by the end of the year, and will be available for season 21 and beyond.
CSI has to thank Survivor for being a giant. CSI debuted on Friday and did nothing until CBS moved to the slot after Survivor, the rest as they say is history.
Survivor definitely has an addictive quality. My only complaint is in recent years, they use puzzles much too often in challenges.
