Wednesday: America’s Next Top Model premieres well with young women

Posted on 05 March 2009 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard FOX CBS ABC NBC Uni CW
Total Viewers (million) 16.35 8.86 7.02 5.39 4.02 3.89
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 5.7/15 2.2/6 2.9/8 1.5/4 1.7/4 1.8/5
Rating/Share: Adults 18-34 4.6/14 1.2/4 2.4/7 1.1/3 1.8/5 2.1/6

American Idol was on, so it of course won everything.  NBC aired the series finale of Knight Rider and repeats of Life and Law & Order.  CBS ran repeats and still placed second in total viewers.  ABC was third in viewers but second to FOX in the demos.

The Lost vs. Lie to Me duel that looked so interesting earlier in the season now is only much of a battle in terms of total viewers.  In the youth demos, Lost is now winning handily.  Lie to Me will drop some in the finals due to American Idol overrun, and it’s half hour drops are still fairly noteworthy.  It dropped from 11.14 million the first half with a 3.9/10 (rating/share) in adults 18-49 to 9.24 million in the second half hour with a 3.3/8.

Lost fared better with a 1970s themed episode than the already canceled (but will air its final episodes) Life on Mars.   Not up against American Idol this week, Lost bounced back up from a 4.4 to a 4.8 rating in adults 18-49.  But a little bit of Lost overrun (I think, I wasn’t paying attention to times last night) helped the Life on Mars numbers below.  LOM opened with 6.28 million and a 2.5/7 in 18-49s, but dropped to 5.03 million and a 1.7/5 the last half hour.

America’s Next Top Model couldn’t have returned soon enough for the CW.  The two hour season premiere obviously had better numbers the second hour when it wasn’t up against Idol, but according to the CW, it premiered better than last fall’s cycle, up 13% women 18-34, 5% in adults 18-34, 6% in adults 18-49, and 11% in total viewers (3.9mil).

Last Wednesday’s overnight report.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. johnthemon says:

have Knight Rider’s numbers gone up? For some reason I thought they were lower, still pretty sure this was the series finale.

  2. matt says:

i love LOM and thought yesterdays episode was great, but Im glad they are chopping it. This is not a series that should run more than a year upon review. Adding a year would turn it into the crap that was the x-files or heros. They are going to tell what I expect is a great story and leave it at that. I cant complain about it not having the opp. to jump the shark or turning it into a conspiracy mess(x-files)

  3. Renee says:

So I’m curious, has Knight Rider officially been cancelled? Or is it all but certain speculation. I just don’t remember seeing any official notice from NBC, but I miss things sometimes ;-) .

  4. Fin says:

CBS beaten by CW in 18-34 and not too far in the 18-49 LOL. NBC was last 18-49 (though reruns) beaten by 0.3 by the CW.

  5. ljo says:

Criminal Minds was also a repeat.

  6. Gusar says:

johnthemon, yes, Knight Rider went up, I thing it’s usual rating is 1.6. And I too would like to know if it’s canceled or not. Not that I was watching it (I saw the first episode and the awful KARR episode and that was enough), but I’m curious anyway.

  7. Agent StraHOTski says:

Was Criminal Minds a repeat? Those numbers are way below its norm ~ especially in the demos.

  8. neps says:

thanks for giving me an in to talk Knight Rider. :D

Here are the number of viewers (in millions) for the season:
    http://knightrideronline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=171036#p171036

The show took a 2m drop after the Obama special that aired across networks, and this week was actually the 2nd highest after that. Plus the slight bump in viewers after the show was off a week (obama again!) and had ZERO promotion is positive. (I’m talking zero – not even a next week on Knight Rider at the end of the previous episode and no promos over that two weeks on NBC anywhere)

Officially this is the “Season Finale” as NBC hasn’t said one way or another if the show is canceled. But it’s of course in danger. Personally, I’m not so sure it’s automatic death sentence (numbers for Howie Do It – are). It’s had consistent numbers with a loyal fan base, it recently started airing in 7 international countries and has a big sponsorship from Ford.

It’s unknown if any of this would apply for a second season, but NBC has gone on record saying that they need content that they can sell to other countries. It might just save Knight Rider – it did for Baywatch back in the day.

  9. Sam first of the name says:

Wow, the CW beating NBC in the Demos at 9. Still, this is a huge hit for the CW 4.46 millions…

Lost won the 9pm slot, good for them

Lie to me can’t even beat Criminal minds repeat in the viewers.

The demos are still strong though.

  10. Bill Gorman says:

johnthemon, Nielsen’s season averages (which include repeats) for Knight Rider were 6.045m viewers, and a 1.8 rating for 18-49, but that masks a big drop during the season, so yes, the finale was up compared to more recent new episodes.

    Oh, it’s canceled for sure.

  11. yes, Criminal Minds was a repeat. everything on CBS was. Renee, I’m not sure there has been an absolutely official announcement from NBC, but in every other way possible NBC has announced it. There may never be any announcement other than it not being on the fall schedule when it’s announced.

  12. Michael says:

Neps, you’re ignoring one important factor. NBC is turning 10 PM over to Leno. There’s not that many spots left.

  13. Bill Gorman says:

The CW has to be breathing easier after the ANTM last night. It did very well for them. Had it not, they’d be staring over the abyss.

Reaper fans note that in the 8pm hour vs. Idol, ANTM did a 3.0 rating for W18-34 vs. Reapers 1.0. That puts Reaper’s results in perspective.

  14. cool says:

wow.. NBC behind Univision AND CW last night.

  15. clutz says:

Isn’t Lie To Me moving to 8 p.m. soon? I think (and hope) it will perform a little better there.

  16. Markoni says:

If “Lie To Me” aired on CBS, it would have 17 million viewers. It is better than the Mentalist.

  17. LOST continues to amaze from a creative point of view. JUST great television.

    chuck

  18. Bad Robot ! says:

The only show Im watching Wednesdays is LOST. Though its totally freaking me out! Why did they only show the back of the four toe statue? Whose face is on the other side? Will it be like Planet of the Apes with Locke pounding on the sand like Charleton Heston? Except that the statues face is an APE???

  19. good to see lost bounce back. Too bad AI kills it every time

  20. Bill Gorman says:

Lie To Me moves to 8pm next Wednesday 4/11. The retentionistas will have their day of reckoning for the show ;)

  21. JT says:

Lost was great last night! One of the best episodes this season and perhaps ever. I love the direction this show has taken! Best TV show ever!!!!!

  22. Lourdes says:

@ matt… I’m sorry dear, but the X-files was not crap like you said. The show was very strong until season 5 or even season 6 after the movie, so there is absolutely NO way you can compare such a terrible show like LOM to the cult the X-files was and the quality of its episodes.
There hasn’t been a show in the last 7 years that can be compared to it. Not even Fringe. Its stars lack the chemistry Duchovny and Anderson had. Well, still have.

  23. Jennf says:

Ive watched LOM since the beginning and its actually gotten better recently. In the beginning it wasnt that great but as I said its actually pretty good now. Figures it would get better when they cancel it. Oh well.

  24. Mike says:

The Leno thing is gonna be weird…NBC thinks having the same show every night @ 10/9c is going to turn out more viewers? The only reason I watch NBC is the 2 hour Thursday night comedy shows, NBC hasn’t got much else left to make a statement with.

As for ABC’s lineup, LOST is the only show they have that draws me in. They severely lack good programming. Maybe they should buy Terminator:TSCC and show that after LOST lol.

  25. jesus_stick says:

    lost was… yeah, amazing.

  26. SoCal says:

I don’t know that Lie to Me is better than the Mentalist, but i certainly agree teh ratings would be way stronger if it were on CBS…I watch both and prefer the Mentalist

  27. Jimmy, all things considered Lost holds up pretty well against AI. It’ll take a 10%ish hit in the 18-49 demo if the recent past holds up where Lost has been getting 4.4s against AI.

Bill’s right, and more attention will (and I think, should) be paid to Lie to Me without the Idol lead-in than will LOST’s drop off due to Idol.

  28. TomSD says:

Great episode of LOST last night and nice numbers too. I guess Sawyer and Juliet also make a good ratings couple.

  29. neps says:

@Michael – that’s a valid point and probably what is hurting renewal more than these numbers.

For some reason I see it having better life maybe on Sci-FI or USA, dunno. Sundays on NBC would probably work better (and there isn’t Leno there) for the show as a replacement for Sunday Night Football, most of the original series aired quite well on Sundays.

While your renew/cancel index is good popcorn fodder, life isn’t always that black and white. Yes, MOWE was canceled for similar ratings, but that was a new show without an international fan base, something that Knight Rider is strong with.

The fact is this show has been pissed on from many reporters (both deservidely and not – including here with the ’series finale’ comment) and yet the ratings have been consistent, even against the American Idol juggernaut – so obviously there is a base here that supports it.

  30. Outlander says:

What is the technical definition of a show getting “cancelled?” When I think of a show being cancelled, I think of a show getting taken off the air suddenly. But I’ve always thought there was a distinction between that situation and:
    (a) a non-renewal, or
    (b) a shortening of the season.

It looks like Knight Rider suffered fate (b) first and will now suffer fate (a). But does that count as a cancellation?

  31. Bill Gorman says:

neps, after about the first month or so ratings have been consistently bad. And thanks for the “popcorn fodder” endorsement, but our Renew/Cancel Index is based on historical precedent, not some dreamy fanboy notion of popularity.

  32. Neps, lol @ popcorn fodder. It’s certainly not infallible, but it’s much, much more accurate than anyone gives it credit for. There are some issues with sitcoms that aren’t black and white, and then there are issues with shows that are right around average.

but so far, it hasn’t yet been wrong with any one hour scripted show that performed WELL BELOW the networks’ average. I suspect we could go back 5 years and not find a single case where a one hour scripted show that performed well under average wasn’t cancelled

  33. Bill Gorman says:

Outlander, I wrestle with the potential meaning difference between “canceled” and “not renewed” all the time. I’ve settled on “canceled” = not coming back next season, but acknowledge that others may define it differently.

Edit: I also acknowledge that my definition has evolved during this season. Under fire at times ;)

  34. Bad Robot ! says:

I doubt Idol is having much effect on LOST – the kind of people who watch American Idol over LOST have fairly low IQ’s and prefer bright shiny objects to anything requiring even moderate levels of brain power.

Though I dont watch crime shows like Criminal Minds (up against LOST) any more, at least that show requires some brain power.

  35. Bad Robot it’s all relative. Idol has a noticeable impact for Lost and it has been in the range of .4 to .7 of an 18-49 ratings point. And .4 might not sound like much, and it doesn’t matter for Lost’s prospects, but if Dollhouse or Terminator went up by .4 in 18-49s, there would be dancing in the streets.

  36. Rachel P says:

    Indeed there would be.

    *cues music*

  37. cool says:

so this will be the last time a Lost repeat will air at 8PM?

  38. the128boy says:

6 full hours of repeats last night. “march sweeps” indeed. ;) lost is very consistent this season and has held up better for abc than either greys or housewives. cw is loving tyra today lie to me me’s lead off spot will be very interesting. i think seeing fringe in a similar situation would also be fascinating. :) bye bye knight rider.

  39. Bill Gorman says:

128boy, the “March” sweeps begin tonight, and end on April 1.

  40. T says:

Spoilertv is reporting Knight Rider has just been cancelled and they are usually pretty accurate

  41. Schmokey says:

Just stopping a moment to remark on the unusual accomplishment that Lost manages each week in the ratings. Serial shows are dying all over the vine, and no serial show has really ever managed to be very successful for more than a year or two in modern times (unless, like DH or 24, they reboot the serial each season), yet the most heavily serialized show I’ve ever seen is still pulling down nearly 5 million in the demo after 5 years on the air. I wonder if we will ever see the its like again.

On top of that, the show manages to reinvent itself creatively over and over, and always to great effect. From a strongly character driven show early on, to a now action driven sci-fi vehicle with those same strongly established characters at its core, Lost is really like no other show I’ve ever seen. It’s not my favorite show of all time, but its certainly the most unique I’ve ever seen. And shows like last night’s “Lafleur” and last season’s “The Constant,” along with a handful of others over the years, are among the best hours of television I have ever seen.

But what really makes Lost different for me, and consequently makes me marvel at how it still pulls big demo numbers after all these years, is its refusal to pander or dumb down the show in order to retain audience. For a show that is still working on the same mystery with which it began almost six years ago, there is a startingly small amount of exposition. Some episodes there is almost no exposition at all, and yet it always works. You never feel, if you will pardon the expression, lost. I truly believe you could jump in right now and enjoy the show. You wouldn’t understand the overall story, but you could enjoy it, thanks to strongly defined characters played by excellent actors, and thanks to the producers understanding that the need to entertain always outweighs the need to gaze into their navel.

I know I have said this before, but it baffles me that other serialized shows cannot figure this out. Massive amounts of exposition weigh a show down so much that you cannot even begin to tell a story, which is why I think modern serialized shows lose audience so quickly these days. They simply collapse under the weight of trying to keep everyone up to speed, treating their audience like retarded children and pretty much eliminating any possibility of effective storytelling. Lost may not be some people’s cup of tea, but its ratings this season prove to me that serialized shows can work over a number of years if the writers and producers know what in the hell they are doing.

I hate to beat a dead horse for anything other than the pure pleasure of it, but 24 should take notes. I know I whack on Jackie B and the gang probably too much, but its just so annoying to see a show with those resources and great cast simply flop around in the waters of exposition each week. Plus, it’s a good parallel to Lost, because 24 is as much science fiction as anything Lost has ever done (hello, the White is actually guarded by more than ten guys with water pistols).

Ok, end of rant. Sorry, but sometimes this stuff just has to come out of me or I will burst.

  42. djm says:

yeah, KR had a good season finale. If it comes back next season, they havent burned any bridges, but I’m pretty sure most die-hard fans (if there are any) are satisfied, even if it’s the last ep ever. Hopefully JS can come up with an ending like this for chuck, that shuts the door, but dosen’t lock it.(Leaving open space for a third season -fingers crossed-)
The sheer volume of repeats was annoying last night, for those chosen few (myself included) who dont watch AI, it was a frigging wasteland. Crime drams don’t usually have very good replay value (for me atleast) so I was stuck between old LO or old CSINY blah.

  43. Ant says:

djm, Schwartz has said he is pitching third season ideas to NBC this week for Chuck.

  44. Craig S says:

So is FOX still making the Lie To Me/Idol switch next week? Lie has been dropping big time, the whole on one week off the next has not been helping, I don’t know what Fox is thinking although one of the pre-emptions was due to the president, but still. After this week’s ratings, it looks like it will be somewhere between a 2.6-3.0 for the demos in the 8 pm slot at least initially. Although people thinking Idol is on at 8 next week might give the show a little bump if they leave the channel on until Idol. If the show can hold near or close to a 3 it would be back next season.

Even though most people focus on the Idol/Lost battle, I’ve read including here that it’s how Lie to Me does at 8 that is more important and I agree. If Lie drops down but not quite to cancellation levels will they move it back to 9 to try to save it? What do you think FOX is expecting to keep it at 8 especially with the ratings falling every episode it has aired after Idol?

  45. Sarah says:

this is not the series finale of knight rider, it’s the season finale. NBC has not announced whether it will take a season 2. i’d really appreciate it if you would stop assuming, and get your facts straight. please change your blog to “season”. thank you.

  46. the128boy says:

bill, thanks for the correction as to the start of sweeps. Why do they start it on a Thursday, though?

  47. tim says:

good for the CW! i havent seen a show of theirs hit over 4 million in a little while now. im sure they are very happy with last nights results.

  48. the128boy says:

sarah, many times networks never use the word “cancelled”. It’s so negative and final, and they like to fill all of their press releases with whatever positive news (or spin) they can. ABC practiced the exception to the rule in announcing the cancellation of Life On Mars. Don’t get used to the nets doing this, because it’s rare, and rare for a reason.

  49. Sarah says:

the128boy: it has not been announced. if it hasn’t been announced, then it should be referred to as “Season finale.”

  50. Bill Gorman says:

128boy, sweeps always start on a Thursday. As to why they always start on a Thursday, someone else will have to answer that. ;)

  51. shea says:

Does anyone else think that there will be MAJOR schedule changes for each of the networks next season?

It seems that since networks are really down this year and they havent made changes in a while that it seems time for a HUGE shuffle next season. NBC being the most drastic and FOX too for the fall.

I really hope that we pull a 2004 next season with huge hits right out of the gate (2004 had Desperate Housewives, lost, house, Grey’s Anatomy, and a couple others)

  52. the128boy says:

sarah, i understand your point, and am well aware of the According To Jim Rule, but i just don’t see this one coming back in the fall with NBC only having 10 hours to schedule. I suppose we shall see come May.

  53. Sarah says:

i’m just getting tired of people assuming the show is already cancelled, and referring to it as ’series finale.’ nobody knows at this point, and i’d like it to be referred to as what it is at this point: a season finale.

  54. stacy says:

Can someone explain to me why ABC is putting on a repeat of Lost next week. This will be the first Wednesday of sweep, right? I just don’t understand.

  55. Mike G. says:

Fox has definitely not been helping Lie to Me. Do we really need 2 hours of AI every other Wed? That it got the level of viewers that it did says a lot about the show. Honestly, I think the move to 8:00 will help it out. They just have to keep it on the air every week and let it build an audience.

  56. the128boy says:

shea, nbc will definately have a radically different schedule, but CBS will probably be very very stable. ABC’s fall will depend a lot on it’s gigantic slate of new stuff coming down the pipeline in the next few weeks. If they get a few hits then they probably won’t have too many holes in the fall, if they all bomb, then yeah, they are gonna be plugging a lot of holes. Fox is too hard for me to tell. I’m guessing somewhere in the middle.

  57. Stacy, I think it’s just scheduling and that the networks (not just ABC) don’t seem to be fretting over the March sweeps this year.

  58. Considering that ANTM and Reaper attract completely different demos, ANTM’s numbers put *nothing* into perspective. Call me when you’re talking about Supernatural or Smallville instead.

  59. Bill Gorman says:

sarah, 128boy is absolutely correct, what ABC did with Life On Mars is an exception. As for Robert’s use of “series finale” in the copy above, that’s the reality of the situation. And even if we are wrong (horrors!), its not like it has any negative effect on anything.

  60. Sarah says:

it offends the millions that watch the show each week. please change it.

  61. Bill Gorman says:

ReaperDMV, and here I thought denial was a river in Egypt. ;)

  62. djm says:

    LOL @ Bill!

I dont see why FOX or CBS should changeup there shows, with a few exceptions, there arn’t any holes in their sched this year.

  63. David says:

Wait a sec, i thought sweeps were in February and in May?

  64. Bill Gorman says:

David, because of the previously scheduled, and now rescheduled, transition to digital TV on Feb 17, the February sweeps were moved to March just this year.

  65. Sarah says:

neilson changed it for the DTV switch, which was supposed to be in feb, but they since changed it to june.

  66. Zee says:

LOST is simply AMAZING, I agree with a lot of the losties up there esp Schmokey, however, I say it IS my favourite show of all time and I doubt any show will ever beat it.
Last night’s ep was AWESOME….loved every second of it and as for the
four-toed statue, it gave me chills!

  67. Sarah says:

i would LOVE to have people that don’t refer to shows they don’t like as “series finales.”

the SEASON finale of knight rider last night was great. i really liked the homage at the end of the episode to the original series.

  68. Rob R says:

Ditto to everything Schmokey said about “Lost.” The viewership is so consistent because “Lost” is one of the great shows in television history, and many of us are conscious of how precious it is and are valuing its final 25 hours or so. I believe all “Idol” will do when it airs head-to-head against “Lost” is affect the percentage of the audience that watches it the same night vs. within the next 2 or 3 nights. That will affect the same night Neilsen number but not the full DVR numbers. Those who care about “Idol” also (like me) will usually watch “Idol” first (to avoid spoilers) and then take my time to watch “Lost” on DVR and savor it.

  69. Michael says:

Sarah, sometimes everyone knows that a show is cancelled but nobody will admit it. Look at Lipstick Jungle- NBC and Brooke Shields still haven’t admitted that it’s cancelled, even though 2 of the lead actresses have signed on to other pilots. It’s not a matter of not loving a show, it’s a matter of being realistic.

  70. Nick C says:

KR was canceled weeks ago by Angela. I think I mentioned it in a post some time around then. That is the reason the final episodes received zero promotion, it was canceled. Why the producer who interacts with KROnline didn’t tell them is beyond me. The was canceled. Angela was pretty adamant about it being “over.”

  71. @Rob R & Schmokey — actually last night’s episode should easily clear 6 million 18-49s, last week’s 4.4 adults 18-49 rating produced over 5.8 million. And I agree it’s pretty phenomenal for such a highly serialized show. And for most of the fans who have stuck with it, episodes like last night’s are a nice payoff. it was just plain fun to watch.

  72. Michael says:

Okay, now TV Guide is reporting that Knight Rider’s been cancelled:
    http://www.tvguide.com/News/Heroes-Knight-Rider-1003687.aspx

  73. T says:

told you it was cancelled :)

  74. Sarah says:

until i see some sort of press release from NBC stating otherwise, it is still a ’season finale.’

  75. Michael says:

A season finale- like Lipstick Jungle’s “season finale”? NBC rarely issues press releases for cancelled shows.

  76. Alex says:

Yeah Knight Rider isn’t coming back unless every pilot and series NBC makes between now and next season flops big time and even then I wouldn’t be holding my breath.

  77. Shem says:

NBC is really tanking as one of the “big three” networks. It seems like FOX has already or will take their place. To be beaten by the CW whether in repeats or not is shameful. But then again I’m a CW fan.

I was expecting something in the 3.5-3.9 million range; but to acquire 4.5 Mil is great. Hope they keep it up. Shame on you NBC…

  78. Bill Gorman says:

Shem, the concept of the “big 3″ has been the “big 4″ for a long time. NBC might be on the verge of dropping out, but Fox has been there for quite some time.

  79. matt2 says:

I certainly concur with the consensus view of Lost. It is the epitome of all a serialized drama should be. Always engrossing, a brain teaser, and one heck of a roller coaster ride; in the back of your mind you’re always cognizant of and fearful for where the final destination lies for these people following each time warp. And even though you know there has never been any level of stasis for this group since boarding the Oceanic flight, you desperately want it for them while at the same time dreading the day they receive it. To so ingeniously put these people through ever changing time gaps and have everything fit perfectly together; to give us the middle and then the prequel, followed by an ending, and a beginning again; from age appropriate details to the explanations of how various things that seemed so out of place came to exist as they are just blows me away everytime. I’ll never forget the recent episode where Locke ran into the correctly aged Walt in the city going home from school. How far in advance did they shoot that scene in order to make it fit this season? A year or two or more ago? The choreography of the scene work is simply phenomenal!!! Will there ever be another serialized show this cleverly thoughtout…only if Lieber and Lindeloff have something to do with it.

  80. Cat says:

LOST was incredible, one of the most enjoyable episodes in a long time.

    (And then Kate showed up…)

  81. Mr. M says:

Whoa, Knight Rider was second only to American Idol!?!?!

I watch both shows and I think the last 8-9 episodes (not including the KARR episode) were what the average KR fan wanted to see. Too bad the first half weren’t as good.

  82. Ghost says:

    @neps

Knight Rider was pissed on in the media because it was an awful series in every way. It was just plain bland and was badly managed fro the get-go. It failed in the ratings completely and NBC themselves turned their back on the show long ago, and for good reason, it was an epic fail.

And “officially” the last episode WAS the series finale for NBC, because they said so in their own promos leading up to the show. I mean, the network themselves called it the SERIES FINALE, that means it’s over forever. And no amount of fanboy twisting of numbers or crying for an official press release is going to change that fact.

And attacking tvbythenumbers only shows your own lack of character, nothing more. You attack this site, neps, because you lack the facility to actually defend Knight Rider properly.

  83. ABCFanaticThinks says:

YAY! Lost back at #1 in its timeslot

  84. @ghost – I think you’re taking this a little too seriously. I appreciate the guys here, and they seem to appreciate harmless ribbing. It’s all good debate, not an attack and I’m pretty sure Robert and Bill think that way too. They use “series finale” to poke at us the way I used “popcorn fodder” to poke at them. No harm, no foul.

Beyond that, I’ve heard E! Canada called it a ’series’ finale, but their terminology is different there. NBC – the mother ship – is calling it a season finale and never advertised it as anything. Look at NBC.com right now – in the left column it says watch the season finale.

If you’re saying otherwise, you’re just spreading unsubstantiated rumors.

  85. Sarah says:

couldn’t have said it better myself, neps.

  86. Michael says:

Knight rider online, NBC refused to respond when TV Guide announced Knight Rider was cancelled. Look at how NBC denied reports that Heroes might be cancelled. Knight Rider is gone.

  87. Ghost says:

neps, you insulted this site, you can’t talk your way out of that.

I saw the final promos on NBC myself and they said series finale, not season. It wasn’t any Canadian channel it was NBC itself, they themselves called it the series finale that on their own network feed. The show is cancelled and loads of media outlets are reporting it.

  88. neps says:

Proof Ghost – or it didn’t happen. I live in NYC and on show days I have NBC tuned in all day to argue the point that they don’t advertise. I DVR the NBC promos and fast forward through the shows looking for a promos. Stop contributing to the anonymous bs thats going around – you must be TV Guides source as well?

All due respect to this site, I’m not looking for a press release. If a respectable outlet like THR or Variety say its dead, then fine. But TVGuide and Spoiler TV are tabloids and rely on anonymous submission – you shouldn’t build your house on that. Both Variety and the NY Times today had articles on Wednesdays numbers and talked about how Knight Rider increased viewership. Don’t you think that if they were canceled, thats a more meaty story to run with?

We have direct contact to the cast/crew and have spoken with several of them who say they don’t know either way and even the cast can’t look for work because they are locked into a multi-year contract. Now I’m not saying someone in NBC exec land isn’t drafting the memo – but it’s not official yet.

  89. Ghost says:

I saw the promo three times leading up to the Wednesday night’s final show, NBC themselves called it the series finale. I don’t care what you “claim” to have seen, I know what I saw. And this site states the show was cancelled, and tvguide.com stated the show was cancelled, and zap2it.com, and the Chicago Tribune, and the LA Times, and several other legitimate sources have also stated the show got axed.

You can live in denial if you like, but quit trying to push that lie on other people. It’s never going to work on me or the rest of tvbythenumbers. And talking to the cast and crew is meaningless, the show has been completely out of production since December, how would they know anything, they’ve all moved on to new projects or are looking for work, like Gary Scott Thompson who is trying to restart Las Vegas now.

No, KR is long dead and good riddance, the show was awful.

  90. Sarah says:

you seem to be the only one in the world that has seen NBC promos. even the thousands of people that frequent knight rider online, SOMEONE would have said, “hey i saw a promo on NBC that said ’series finale’”. but no one has.

  91. your face says:

you seem to be the only one in the world that seen NBC promos. even the thousands of people that frequent knight rider online, SOMEONE would have said, “Hey I saw a promo on NBC that said it was a ’series finale.’” but no one has.

  92. Ghost says:

Lots have people have said they’ve seent he NBC promos, what are you talking about. They were heavily discussed in a variety of forums, like IMDB and on NBC.com’s forums themseleves. I was on KRO yesterday and one of the KRO posters there named Nelson B said he saw the series finale promo. Sorry, but you aren’t going to twist the argument around to whether or not the promo actually exists, it was on and I saw it, and so did thousands of other people.

You cannot deny that NBC themselves said the last episode was the series finale.

Are you guys all from KRO? I wouldn’t be surprised since KRO states it’s declared war against tvbythenumbers, lol. Isn’t that neps guy your leader? He just made a juvenile attack against this site in this very thread, lol, his credibility is shot all to hell now, like he ever had some anyway. And I read on IMDB that KRO was caught lying about KR08’s ratings in an effort to make the show seem more successful.

No, KRO is obviously a corrupt website and it has zero credibility here on tvbythenumbers or anywhere else on the internet.

  93. your face says:

you’ve crossed a line, ghost. neps quotes several ratings sites. he doesn’t fake numbers. he’s an honest guy, and you’re soiling his good name. we’re just pointing out facts. the only person that’s seen an ’series finale’ promo was from nelson B, who saw it on E! canada which has a different meaning up there.

  94. Ghost says:

neps soiled his own good name when he came on here and attacked tvbythenumbers. That showed everybody what a rude person he was, completely ruining all his credibility. You can’t twist out of that. Knight Rider got axed and your leader made a personal attack on tvbythenumbers, then declared war on us. Nope, nobody from KRO is worth listening to, that much is certain.

  95. your face says:

    neps didn’t declare war.

  96. Blogger says:

It’s interesting you’re talking about credibility Ghost when you’re claiming that Thompson is trying to restart Vegas.

  97. Solid Snake says:

Ghost, no offence, seriously… trying to bash a person because he validly says there is no confirmation from the horses mouth (or one of its feeders) about KR being cancelled is just plain stupid. There was no attack at all in any of the posts other than your own.

Besides, NBC went on record saying Heroes would come back (with less episodes), true… But when asked if KR was not going to be renewed they did not state anything, this only means it is not a done deal… why withhold statement a statement for a show which just aired its last episode? If they had made up their mind they would have said something… like it is shelved, or it won’t be back. Again the episode aired… there is no point in saying nothing as there is nothing to be silent about… the show is done for the season, that would have been a time to say that it won’t come back and yet they did not. I am not saying its all one happy family and it will be back, but all I want to say is that I don’t think all is done yet.

I for one would salute a renewal!

    Thanks for the attention.

  98. Ghost says:

KRO declared war against this site, and neps a “big-shot” there, like your mascot or whatever. Also he made a juvenile attack against tvbythenumbers. Can’t twist your way out of that one, nope.

And I’m not “claiming” anything about Gary Scott Thompson, I read he’s gone back to working on Las Vegas in the Chicago Tribune. I believe zap2it.com mirrored the Tribune’s article in Korbi Ghosh’s column. That article was also brought up in KRO discussion thread recently. Really, lol, it seems I know your site better then you guys do.

Now stop attacking tvbythenumbers and quit waging way on us.

  99. Blogger says:

I agree with Neps and Solid Snake. It makes no sense to hold actors to their contracts if there isn’t any possibility of the shows return. NBC is holding out to see how much of a stir this canceled not canceled debate will cause. It’s called viral marketing. If it’s huge and gets them a lot of press they might just keep Knight Rider around. So I must thank you then Ghost for your help in keeping Knight Rider in the limelight.

  100. Nick C says:

I asked Angela today: “IS KR canceled?” The answer?

    YES.

Does GST know? YES. Is Universal holding the actors to their contracts? YES.

Universal has yet to cancel the show, NBC has. The difference is that Universal may believe they have syndication abilities or other outlets. Supposedly the show has some strong international numbers that would justify an alternative route of production. It’s just not going to be on NBC.

  101. Pad says:

neps reminds me of the paranoid Liverpool supporters on football365, please continue *chews generic food product*

  102. Blogger says:

Wow, I don’t know this Nick C and if he is legit. But that’s awesome! I knew the international numbers would save the show.

  103. Nick C says:

Blogger, I think it’s dead. It’s dead at NBC and soon will be dead elsewhere too unless Universal really wants to do syndication.

I put chances of survival at about 1%.

  104. Blogger says:

Ill take that 1% Nick C. It’s more than Ghost will give me.

  105. Blogger says:

Can Bill Gorman or anyone else verify that this Nick C is legit. I don’t want to go getting my hopes too high. And no not you Ghost. I want to see some actual links and cited sources for once.

  106. Ghost says:

I don’t even know Nick C, so why exactly would I even vouch for him, lol. Do your own research.

  107. Knight Rider is dead. The show is crap anyways, so I mean it’s not a loss.

  108. @Blogger, while I can’t verify for certain that Nick C is legit, I can say with a great deal of certainty anything he’s stated as fact or data has proved to be true. Quite often, he states opinions I don’t agree with, but in this case, I agree with him.

He has KR as canceled and he says an exec at NBC told him that. I have no reason not to believe him. He gives an OPINION that KR has a very, very SLIM chance (1%) that Universal could somehow keep producing it based on international audience. So basically NBC is done with the show and the show has almost no chance for survival. There’s not much for me to disagree with there, either based on data, or opinion.

  109. Sarah says:

i’d really like for ghost to get over his angsty mood. you’re the biggest hypocrite. complain about neps saying something about tvbythenumbers, which is hardly an “attack” and then hugely attack KRO, call it corrupt, and insult everyone there. get over yourself.

  110. KITT says:

Long live Knight Rider. I hate those bashing retards in this site. Neps is great man! Why would he lie to fans about ratings when anyone could check it by themselves on other websites? He’s a good man. Can’t wait for a second season!

  111. how can anyone really lie about ratings, everyone know the show hasn’t been able to pull over 6 million viewers for months and at the weakest hour of the week probably. That’s simply pathetic.

Oh and Kitt if you have a problem with us “retards”, go run along.

  112. Sarah says:

6 weeks ago, knight rider had a 6.01 rating.

  113. Sarah says:

    oh, excuse me. 6.10 rating.

  114. Ultra Magnus says:

6.10 Indeed, it was episode 13 Exit Light, Enter Knight

  115. it did NOT have a 6.1 HOUSEHOLD RATING, but it definitely did clear 6.2 million viewers (final numbers):

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/02/03/top-nbc-primetime-shows-january-26-february-1-2009/12097

  116. 6.10!!!!!!!!! OMG WE HAVE A CONTENDER TO TOPPLE AMERICAN IDOL, SOUND THE ALARM………..

Oh and the week before that the show pulled in under 5 million. Not exactly something to write home about.

TV is a what have you done for me lately. Hence, why nobody is talking about how Heroes was pulling over 8 million and a 3.9 5 weeks ago but how its now below 7 and cant get a 3.5 in the demo.

The simple fact is, the show aired its series finale. Maybe if it was someone critically acclaimed like FNL they would try and save it. But in no way are they going to try and save this crap.

  117. Michael Knight says:

First KR is Not canceled. NBC would have put the word out near the end of the show, or at the most the website. NBC would not keep KR’s fans in the dark if the show was canceled.

I have viewed this site lots of times. Some Information is incorrect.

    ~MK

  118. lol @ Michael Knight. You mean like when NBC put out word about Lipstick Jungle being canceled? Oh wait, they still technically haven’t!

  119. djm says:

says the unbiased person… isint it true that most shows are never “officially” canceled?

  120. Ultra Magnus says:

In all seriousness, what show could topple Idol?

None, Everybody and their dog watches it.

Knight Rider has been stable, even gaining viewers since the retool. NBC really hasn’t done jack all advertising for it so from that perspective, its done well considering.

Internets full of Knight Rider’s been cancelled speculation which at this moment in time is just that, “speculation” plain & simple. Plenty of people have also come around, people who were originally not convinced were starting to dig its new direction.

  121. Ghost says:

Actually NBC did put out the word that Knight Rider was cancelled, they called the last episode the series finale in promos that they ran for over the course of the four days leading up to the airing of the show.

And I’m really “impressed” at the maturity of the Knight Rider Online people who’ve been coming on here, lol, what with them calling everybody “retards” and their leader making juvenile attacks on our site, trying to say the data posted here is “popcorn fodder”.

No wonder Knight Rider sucked and epically failed if the only people who actually liked it were trolling fanboys like them. I bet if you stamped a box of dog crap with the KR logo that neps and his boys would sit and stare at it for weeks on end, lol.

  122. Sarah says:

seriously ghost, stop. stop saying “everybody.” it’s not everybody.

again, NBC ran no promos. the only promos that were seen as ’series finale’ was aired on E! canada, which series/season verbage has different meaning up there. we won’t know for sure until NBC puts out their fall schedule.

  123. hmmmm, but who trolls the trolls then?

Can, we please just stop this? Is it possible to have discourse without rudeness or bashing? The answer might be no, but I’m about ready to turn the comments on these posts off! :(

  124. Holly says:

    That would be sad. :(

  125. Ultra Magnus says:

“No wonder Knight Rider sucked and epically failed if the only people who actually liked it were trolling fanboys like them. I bet if you stamped a box of dog crap with the KR logo that neps and his boys would sit and stare at it for weeks on end, lol”

@Ghost Your really “impressed” at the maturity of the Knight Rider Online people, yet you choose to make a statement like that?

  126. Nick C says:

You know I almost with Dirty Sexy J was back. That fool was at least amusing. The KR arguers on both sides are … sad.

  127. Nick C says:

Ok Happy Hour was too nice to me, I can’t even spell “wish,” correctly.

  128. neps says:

I was trying to keep quiet while my name got dragged through the mud, but this is just getting silly. Ghost – I don’t know what your problem is (but with your IMDB reference, I think I know who you are) but I never attacked the good folks behind the site the way you keep doing towards me. Its completely rude, unprofessional and uncalled for. If you honestly think they had taken offense to anything I’ve said then you haven’t been on the internet very long – I’m sure others have been called them worse.

You’re bordering on slander with your accusations and lies. I have never once lied about ratings – I give proper credit to TVByTheNumbers, Zap2It and pifeedback.com on a consistent basis. The only thing I’ve done is put emphasis on the Millions of Viewers vs the ratings/share system since common people never understand ratings.

Prove me wrong Ghost. You talk and you talk – but you’ve never proved one thing you state. You talk about maturity, that’s laughable.

Things aren’t as black and white with SciFi programming – it never is – and specially one that has an established (all be it passionate) fanbase. Look at Sliders, Baywatch, Viper (not including stargate since that was 5 yrs in) – all series moved their main network and thrived on another. 1% isn’t as rare as you think.

I think it’s time for the comments here to be shut down.

  129. Nick, I can correct your typo-lisp if you like. Dirty Sexy J is missed!

Neps, I’m not sure if you called us anything, but even if you did, I’m sure I have been called worse, both online and offline. I am going to shut the comments down on this post now. (Holly, I didn’t mean shut off all comments on all posts, but ~130 here will hopefully tide people over until at least next Wednesday).
