Baracketology: Obama’s NCAA Final Four picks are all number one seeds except Memphis

Posted on 17 March 2009 by Robert Seidman

President Obama is not sold on UConn!  A little off topic, but, what the heck (updated info from ESPN on Obama’s picks are here):

President Obama Picks Bracket in Exclusive ESPN Interview

Andy Katz Interview With President on Wednesday’s Noon ET SportsCenter,

Bracket on ESPN.com Wednesday

President Obama’s Final Four: Louisville, North Carolina, Memphis, Pitt

In an exclusive interview, airing on Wednesday’s Noon ET SportsCenter, with ESPN.com senior college basketball writer Andy Katz, President Barack Obama filled out his bracket predictions for the 2009 NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament.  President Obama’s bracket will be posted on ESPN.com Wednesday, and will appear alongside the millions of fans expected to play ESPN.com’s Tournament Challenge games.  Last year, the ESPN Men’s Tournament Challenge set a record with 3.65 million entries. Katz’s interview will also be available on ESPN.com and on ESPN Mobile platforms.

The President is predicting a Final Four of Louisville, North Carolina, Memphis and Pittsburgh to meet April 4-6 at Ford Field in Detroit.

The President’s bracket fulfilled a campaign promise made to Katz during an October 19, 2008 interview, for a story about Craig Robinson, Oregon State head basketball coach and brother-in-law to the President.

Said Katz, “President Obama made his picks as a sports fan, not as a politician. He was knowledgeable about the teams, and was even up to date on the latest injuries involving the contenders. He was confident with his picks and delivered an on-camera pep talk for the team he picked to win it all. It was clear that he enjoyed filling out his bracket like the rest of America.”

  1. HeroesforGhosts says:

Huh.. I picked the same final 4. Not surprising since most people I’ve talked to have picked the same one.

  2. Julia says:

I didn’t! I’ve got Michigan winning it all. :) Good thing I’m not playing for money…

  3. In my no stakes bracket pool that is organized by Bill, I have the exact same final four as well.

I have Michigan losing its first game :( But if it’s any consolation I have Michigan St. winning a couple of games. In my $100 lottery ticket bracket, I’m still deciding.

  4. Andrew says:

It always surprises me when people are surprised that someone picks 2-3 #1 seeds to advance to the final four. The reason they’re #1 seeds is because they’re the best teams!

  5. His Excellency, Count Chocula says:

Yeah…Memphis is clearly upset at being snubbed for a 1 seed, and they’re so hungry after having the filet mignon snatched out of their mouths at the last second last year by Kansas.

  6. Chris the TV Sage says:

You know, “BaraCketology” works even better. :)

I’ve gone with North Carolina over Louisville.

My Indiana Hoosiers will be mighty again before you know it.

  7. LOL, oops!

    fixed…

  8. ZinkDude says:

I admit that UCONN probably should not have been a number one seed, but I think they will still make it to the final four. They are still trying to figure out rotation without Dyson in there, but I think they’ll get it just in time.

  9. Jesse says:

I have Wake Forest in the Final Four. Someone convince me i’m crazy.

  10. stacy says:

I also have Wake in the final four, along with Memphis and Pittsburg. I can’t name my final team because I know it’s very wrong, but it starts with a S.

  11. Bad Robot ! says:

This is disturbing. The country remains on the brink of total economic collapse, war in Afghanistan ratcheting up and the Russian pondering basing nuclear armed bombers in Cuba and he is wasting time screwing around with March Madness? That IS madness.

  12. Trebo12 says:

Bad Robot – we’re blessed to have a multi-tasking president. I bet when you’re in the middle of a crisis – you still find some ‘up time’ to do something unrelated to the crisis. Give PBO a break!

  13. Mikey says:

That’s cool. I’m in a pool with about 700 people. I’m going to submit Obama’s bracket just for kicks to see how he fares in our pool. If his bracket wins any dough I’ll donate it to the DNC. Or maybe I’ll just find the nearest AIG executive and put it in his pocket.

  14. Melissa says:

Well, even though I’m a Republican, I generally like Obama. Well, I did until he picked BYU to beat Texas A&M. I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that the Bush Presidential library is housed at A&M. I hope you’re wrong, Mr. President! GIG ‘EM!

  15. lucas says:

nova over pitt. duke sucks, obviously, and nova beat pitt once before, and they will do it again.

  16. Rob says:

How does 1 guy Robert Morris compete against 5, does seem to fair does it?

  17. Lin says:

what year did the number one seed in mens ncaa basketball not make it to the final four?

  18. Hunter says:

President Barack O’ Douchebag, what a stupid idiot. Uconn not in. Are you kidding me? Oklahoma can get past UNC. Memphis will lose to Mizzouri. I have villanova beating Pittsburg. Your on crack. Stupid president doesn’t know what he is talking about.
