MTV’s Real World renewed for four more seasons

Posted on 30 March 2009 by Robert Seidman

MTV is ordering four more seasons of its veteran reality hit “The Real World.”

The order will extend the 17-year-old docudrama from Bunim-Murray Prods. to an incredible 26 cycles. MTV also is ordering another four rounds of Bunim-Murray’s “The Real World/Road Rules Challenge,” bringing the competition series to 21 cycles.

The deal was brokered by Gil Goldschein, who has been promoted to president of Bunim-Murray. The current season of “The Real World: Brooklyn” will air its finale Wednesday, and producers are shooting the next round, “The Real World: Cancun.” via THR.com

The ratings have languished in the current season with The Real World: Brooklyn only averaging 1.389 million viewers in its initial airing of the March 18th episode, but during the week ending March 22, the show aired more than a dozen additional times averaging between 184,000 to 811,000 viewers in those airings.

I know it’s cheap to make, but it would seem like they need to reinvigorate the franchise.  During the same week Disney aired eight reruns of That’s So Raven and all of them had over a million viewers (1.16 million to 1.605 million) with six out of eight averaging more viewers than The Real World.  Unfortunately we lack demographic data for cable shows to do reasonable comparisons, and Disney doesn’t really run advertisements so  this comparison is for illustrative purposes only.

I really miss the OLD Real World when it was…you know…more REAL. Like when they had people who didn’t ALL look like 20 year old models and had other things to do than make out with each other and fight like children. Come on MTV, bring just a little bit of class back to The Real World!! Change it up a little!!!!

  2. Jack says:

Not that I’ve ever watched either show, but with the FNL announcement and now this, it’s one step* forward for quality television and two steps backs.

    * One step equals approximately two seasons.

this show has not been interesting since Seattle, and not cultural relevant since San Fransisco. They could do something real with this show but I don’t see that happening.

LOL @ That’s So Raven beating TRW!

  5. Bad Robot ! says:

Fake World turned to crap long ago. Of course it will continue because its viewers these days have minds similar to sludge pits of sewage treatment plant.

The only way it would be cancelled is if there was a rape or murder on the set.

  6. Red says:

There was a rape during the San Diego season but it didn’t make the air.

Show needs to move back to Tuesdays if it wants its ratings back and doesn’t have to compete with South Park and other young shows.

  7. Red says:

    rape case*, ultimately dismissed

  8. this show is still on the air?

  9. R.G. says:

4 more seasons!?!…because everyone knows that 8 hot babes and dudes that are 18-24 can live together in a cool upscale expensive apartment with all the cool “trimmings and decor” handed to them from a network called M-TV that doesn’t air Music videos is the “Real World”…

    I mean really?!?….what the crap?!?

  10. David says:

To everyone badmouthing the folks who watch the show, give me a damn break. Just because you don’t particularly care for a show doesn’t mean that those who do are idiots. The latest season of the show set in Brooklyn was actually quite good with Katelynn, a transgendered person really being the big draw. It’s certainly been better than the last few seasons that were solely focused on hooking up and drinking. This latest batch of kids have avoided that, so it’s sad to see the ratings haven’t reflected how awesome the season has been.

yes they really do need to move it back to Tuesdays because ratings were higher for them when they were on Tuesdays.
